Highlander Remake Director Announced

Highlander is kind of a thing with me. I’ve been a fan ever since I saw the 90’s TV series with Adrian Paul. The various interpretations and continuities all follow a member of the Clan MacLeod who discovers that they are a member of a secret race of immortals and fight to defend the world from evil immortals who seek to gain a power  known as “the prize” once all other immortals are dead which they could use to conquer or even destroy the world. The classic 1986 film starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod who fought against the great evil known only as  The Kurgan played by the always excellent Clancy Brown. I’m such a fan that I spent a couple of months in 2011 going through every piece of Highlander media I could get my hands on including the films, the live action TV series, the cartoon, the anime, and some of the Big Finish audio dramas.

So yeah, I’m a fan.

This man is a bad-ass!

This week Summit Entertainment announced that the new director for the Highlander remake will be none other  than Cedric Nicolas-Troyan!

“Who the hell is that?” I hear you asking.

Nicolas-Troyan has spent years as a special effects artist with his last major gig being the special effects supervisor and second unit director on  Snow White And The Huntsman. Highlander will be Nicolas-Troyan’s directorial debut which in a way is fitting as the director of the original Highlander in 1986, Russell Mulcahy was primarily known for music videos until the release of the cult classic film. Nicolas-Troyan is a professed fan of the Highlander franchise and intends to supervise a final pass on the script before the film starts production in 2014 so that he can add in cool elements from all the works under the Highlander banner.

“For me, it all comes down to that first movie, but there are great themes in the show,  it’s the rare cross-genre concept that has elements of the Western, time travel, fantasy, action, contemporary. There are universal themes, but of course you need to provide the answers like the first film did. Who are these guys with swords? Why are they fighting each other? What is the prize and how are they drawn to each other? There is far more at work here I want to explore than the lightning that happens during the Quickening.”

From this information it sounds like one thing sure to be included into this edition of the movie is the Watchers, a secret group of mortals who through the generations have acted as historians of the lives of the immortals and their drive to fight one another in one-on-one combat until only one remains alive in what immortals refer to as “the game.”  Another likely bit to find its way into the new movie is the famous theme song “Princes of the Universe” performed by Queen. One thing almost sure not to be included is any mention of the planet Zeist.

Seriously, if you put even one mention of Zeist in this movie Cedric,  you and I are going to have words!

So am I excited about the new movie? Kinda-sorta-maybe. Nicolas-Troyan looks like competent action director but looking at his work on Snow White And The Huntsman
it easy to see how he could turn the gritty sword fights into over stylized nonsense, a problem the franchise has had more than once. Highlander has always been at its best when it keeps the magical and mythical elements minimal and vague and tries to stay as grounded in reality as possible. The biggest problem with the franchise is the fact that creator Gregory Widen’s initial concept doesn’t lend itself to being a franchise in the first place. The first movie was about the battle of the final two immortals and once that was done the story was pretty much over. To continue on they had to create a bunch of dumb plot contrivances with each movie to explain why Connor was once again going to battle an immortal since they were all supposed to be dead and he had claimed “the prize.” The TV series fared better as it was set during “the game” but all the fighting and death found in every episode soon stretched the limits of what even the most forgiving fans were able to take. The Highlander franchise has had so many misfires, some due to poor executions of good ideas and some because they were just bad ideas that should’ve stayed in whatever festering mind cooked them up. Hell, I’m a fan and even I wouldn’t call most of the franchise good! Every fiber of my being wants this movie to be great, but as a longtime fan I know better than to get my hopes up.

So are you excited about the Highlander reboot? Do you prefer Connor or Duncan? Sound off in the comments below!

Remember Cedric, no Zeist , whatever you do NO ZIEST!

Introduction to Actor Training – Week 1

“Acting isn’t about me, It’s about you.”

If you follow any of my posts here on OneOfUs, it will come as no surprise to hear that I love Theatre. As both an actor and director, the theatre is where I have spent most of my time. A good few years ago, I studied English and film at university; I hated it. I found it difficult to integrate into university life and I engage with the course. After three (and a bit) years and mounting financial difficulties I decided to leave before it got worse. I was the ultimate deserter.

Since then I had been working as an actor, director and freelance drama facilitator to various degrees of success. But it always bothered me that I didn’t get the chance to go to drama school and academically study the craft. This year, I began a course at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland which aims to transition people, from all walks of life, into drama school. Now that I have taken a foot back onto the academic path, it got me thinking about the process of drama school, the training and the mystery that surrounds it. I imagined there were plenty of folks who would be interested in finding out what kind of things an actor training actually does.

I attend the university part time, each week for a full day on Sundays and as part of the personal development I need to get down the weeks training, what I did, what I learned and how I can carry it forward and I thought sharing that process with you would be both beneficial for me but also for those interested in the mystery of the actor. So, here we go – week one.

The Royal Conservatoire resides in Glasgow, however, I do not. Therefore, it means a two hour bus journey before class each week. Worse still, here, the first bus (to get to the bus station) is at 8.15 and the bus to Glasgow is at 8.45, so safe to say it’s pretty tight! It doesn’t help that since I hit around 23 I’ve had pretty bad migraines with one of the triggers being extensive travel.

The building itself was pretty quiet. I had visited a couple times before this (an audition a few years ago, the Transitions audition itself, the welcome day) but never had I been within when it was so quiet, so empty. I was the first of my too be classmates to arrive, which didn’t help resolve any kind of nerves and expectations I had. Ultimately, they arrived and immediately we collectively struck up a bond. Interestingly, we were all varied in age and experience which allowed it to not feel like classroom situation.

The day featured a lot of house keeping and touring but, I did get my hands on a fabulous new student card.

1235265_10201876727135971_256719085_n

With all that out of the way, it was time to simply get to know each other a little better. Why we were there, what experiences had brought us there, what we hoped to achieve and so on. This exercise was extremely simple, yet endlessly interesting; in a pair, we each discussed these often personal things and then shared them to the class. This was a very important lesson in acting – It’s not about me, it’s about you, the other.

We were introduced, or perhaps teased to the techniques of Nadine George. A celebrated voice and performance artist who’s techniques are the standard at the University. Her essay, My Life With Voice is extremely interesting and I highly recommend it. Voice Studio International explain that;

It has taken Nadine 30 years of teaching the voice to reach the level and quality of work which she now teaches today. Nadine has created a practical technique that can be used internationally by actors, voice teachers, directors and anyone wishing to develop their true voice. The work is unique, using the sung sound and linking this directly to the body and to work with text.

We began to experiment with breath to make noise. It sounds silly but we underestimate how much we can communicate simply with breath and the ‘sounds’ we can produce with it. As a chorus, lying on the floor we used breath once more to create a harmony of noise. There is no set rule here and we are encouraged to take permission to begin when we want, do what we want and explore how we want to explore. It’s entirely liberating.

This week, I took away the power of purpose. Each exercise has a purpose not only within the moment but a purpose for long term development and it can often be unclear what that is and it is my responsibility to discover it. Purpose is very important for an actor, everything we do from a simple gesture to how a line is delivered must have purpose to it. If there is no purpose, then why is there at all?

Since around 2007, when I began thinking seriously about acting, I have had one, hidden dream – To play the Doctor. I joke about it, becoming the first Ginger Doctor (he’s always wanted that right?) and it was born from my great respect for the show and the challenge it offers an actor; freedom, versatility, challenge. It’s hard to escape the notion, especially studying in the same building as David Tennant.

So the first week came to a close and it was back to normal life. Here’s to week 2!

Watch a Movie with Us: ‘Evil Dead’

It’s here! It’s here! Strike up the demon band and let the unholy chorus play! It’s Halloween, Us Nation!

The first offering we have for you is a seminal classic in every sense of the word. Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead revolutionized not only our beloved horror genre, but independent filmmaking as well! The old standby story conceit of isolating teens at a cabin in the woods? THAT’S RAIMI’S DOING!

To properly enjoy our revisit to that cabin, Brian and Chris brought along their friend Ashley Moreno from The TV Dudes. Hilarity and appropriately inappropriate jokes ensue!

Watch a Movie with Us: ‘Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight’

It’s here! It’s here! Strike up the demon band and let the unholy chorus play! It’s Halloween, Us Nation!

This time around, Brian is joined by Peter Hall from Movies.com and Alamo Drafthouse programmer Greg MacLennan to experience the underrated triumph that is Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight. Amazing practical effects, a phenomenal cast, and pure in-Zane-ity!

For all you doubters who believe no good horror came out of the 90s, Brian, Greg, Peter (and Billy Zane)  are about to prove you wrong…dead wrong.

You can download this commentary track here.

Although we’ll be watching the a DVD edition of the film, as indicated before, Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight is available streaming on Netflix. But if you do want to watch the same version we are, you can buy it on Amazon here…

‘Write A Movie With Us’ – Week 1

We teased and we previewed and now the wait is over, Write A Movie With Us is finally here. Welcome to week one.

If you aren’t familiar with the project then don’t worry. You can find out all you need to know right here. But to recap, each week I will offer a new discussion point and down below, as a collective of writers we will discuss, debate and rebut each idea and concept. The more thrown in to discussion, the more we can mould into a fully fledged script, which I will put together using everything that you do.

So it is week one, and we want to ease gently into the process, get to know each other and our workflow. The ultimate decision we are looking for this week is what genre of Horror we want to write, so bear that in mind also when commenting below.

Keep coming back to the discussion as much as you can throughout the week, I will be doing the same and I look forward to reading and collaborating with you as we go on. If an example, or story peaks your interest, don’t be afraid to question the poster about to get more details on it. Make sure you have a DISQUS username so we can keep track of who you are and your contribution. More importantly, so I can take note of you as soon as you contribute so you can be credited.

We’ve begun a creative process and I am extremely excited. You are all now writers. Welcome to the writers room.

Ben Kingsley’s Secret Marvel Project Revealed?

IRON MAN 3 SPOILERS BELOW

I enjoyed Iron Man 3 quite a bit. Shane Black’s take on the further adventures of Tony Stark presented a reasonable case of what might actually happen to a person who encountered two gods, a living legend, an irate green giant, and countless alien hordes and lived to tell the tale. In fact, Tony might be getting off light with just a case of PTSD.

I was especially fond of the controversial Mandarin twist. Iron Man and Iron Man 3 both have potent messages about how this country confronts terrorism and other global security issues. By reducing the Mandarin to a false figurehead, Shane Black asks viewers to reconsider the hierarchy of terrorist groups and challenges us to recognize that organizations like al-Qaeda and al-Shabaab are comprised of many dangerous elements (including factors that originate here in America) that can’t be eliminated by focusing on one person. In the wake of Osama bin Laden’s execution, this was a timely and valuable theme.

Plus, Ben Kingsley was hilarious as Trevor, the hapless actor who portrayed the Mandarin.

While I appreciate the message derived from the twist, I was a bit disappointed that it meant there would be no actual Mandarin in the Marvel cinematic universe. However, some news this week informed me that I might be getting ahead of myself. Last week, it was reported that Ben Kingsley was working on a super secret project for Marvel Studios. The Latino Review, often lauded for its ability to land accurate scoops well ahead of other news sources, claims to have some details about this clandestine endeavor. The related article had this to say:

According to sources, Marvel wants to make it up to fans so in the one shot, the REAL Mandarin is furious with Aldrich Killian and Ben Kingsley’s character Trevor Slattery for the mockery they made of the real Mandarin’s identity and legacy. The real Mandarin wants to set the record straight.

Dear Galactus, please let this rumor ring true. The Mandarin is one of the more important villains in the Iron Man mythos and serves as valuable foil to the technologically-adept Stark. One of my hopes for Iron Man’s film adaptations is a thorough examination of the “science versus magic” dynamic that the Mandarin brings to the table. While this dream was dashed with Iron Man 3, this rumor has given it new life. While I am glad to hear there may be a Mandarin again, I am curious about who will play him and how he will be portrayed, given the character’s less-than-politically-correct features. However, I’m certain Marvel Studios is capable of creating a realistic and compelling Mandarin devoid of the ethnic insensitivities.

What are your thoughts about the Mandarin’s possible return/entrance to the Marvel cinematic universe? Let us know down below!

‘Olympus Has Fallen’ Writers/Stars Returning For ‘London Has Fallen’

In what I am calling probably the biggest WTF news so far this year- for me personally that is – the unfathomably stupid Olympus Has Fallen was somehow popular enough to raise interest in a sequel. Forget for a second the abusrd fact that there were not one but two White House takeover movies this year, but why there would ever need to be a sequel to this movie is one of the dumbest things I have heard this week, this month and maybe even this year. The property titled London Has Fallen heads to AFM to incite a bidding war for potential release.

The news isn’t just that there is a sequel in the works, but Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman are all returning to reprise their roles from Olympus Has Fallen. Evidently Butler’s generic John McClain routine from the film really struck a chord with audiences and studio execs, so much so that he obviously has to be a huge player when the terrorist shenanigans move to London.

To put it modestly, Olympus Has Fallen is one of my least favorite movies I’ve seen all year. The special effects are some of the worst I’ve seen in recent memory for a wide release film, the acting is barely mediocre, the villain is weak, and once the action moves into close quarters, the scenes were filmed to dark to even see what was going on. Throw in a bunch of mildly amusing action one liners and I suppose I can see where some people found something to enjoy, it just wasn’t for me.

I can say without a doubt that I have no interest whatsoever at this current point in time in a sequel to Olympus Has Fallen, but then again maybe I’m alone in that regard. What are your thoughts? Are you excited that the original cast is reprising their roles? What city/historical landmark should fall next if there’s another sequel after London Has Fallen?

8-Minute Sneak Peak at Fox’s New Show ‘Almost Human’

There have been a slew of new shows that have just been coming and going this past couple of years. Some of them have been major hits, and some of them have been major flops. So what show is next to be thrown in the television gauntlet? Well, it seems that Fox has nominated their tribute to the T.V. Hunger Games! (No, it’s not a Hunger Games T.V. series, I’m just excited for the movie) Almost Human is the name of their new show, and it stars our favorite grumpy space doctor Karl Urban. The series is the follow up of J.H. Wyman, whose previous efforts was working with J.J. Abrams on writing Fringe. The Wrap wrap-ports that Fox released it an 8-minute first look at the series premier, that can be watched here via Hulu:

I loved the hell outta Fringe, because of the fact that it feels like science fiction. It’s on the opposite spectrum of Doctor Who, where instead of all these silly whimsical adventures involving science that makes little sense, explaining concepts using things such as a ‘timey wimey detector,’ Fringe takes place within the realm of actual theoretical science. I’m not saying it’s better than Doctor Who, it’s just that whole ‘apples vs oranges’ debate.

After watching this preview, I think that it is Almost good, but not quite based on what I saw. What we see is stuff that we’ve seen before. It kind of has that I, Robot element, with a detective not being too fond of robots, but being forced to work with one, who seems to be programmed to have some sort of emotion. We have also seen the whole “oh, this detective has PTSD” cliche one too many times. On a side note, it seems that they are still keeping it heavy in the “science” part of science fiction, based on their explanation of the DNA MacGuffin. So that is really good to hear. Also, the production value looks great! It very much feels like it could exist in the same (or parallel, depending on how you look at it) universe as Fringe.

There are two things that I hope for this show. The first one being Karl Urban. I enjoy his performances, and I think he is a great character actor. I hope this show well let him shine, and we can see a more of what Mr. Urban has to offer. Based on this preview, it seems like a more grounded performance, so this may be the most *takes off glasses* humanized role yet!

The other thing I hope, is that maybe this will go in to a very complicated and dynamic relationship between Urban and his robot partner. Perhaps they will go in to some kind of existential dilemma of a robot, and Urban’s character is trying to let the robot understand the meaning of humanity on a level that a robot cannot compute. Similar to what they did in Robot and Frank, only this time instead of a thief, they have to take down a futuristic syndicate that uses weapons of science. So even though what I have seen doesn’t seem to be too impressive, I am excited at the potential it has to offer!

So what do you think OOUies? Are you excited to check this show out? Whatever it is, comment below, let One of Us know!

Four traveling Taoist monks stop in a seemingly ordinary Chinese village, only to discover that all Hell has literally broken loose. The evil demon lord Wu-Feng has gone and resurrected himself and his army of the undead are heading your way. Naturally, it’s up to you to stop the ghostly invasion and defeat Wu-Feng before he conquers the world. For these four monks (and the people playing them), it’s going to be a long, long night.

Ghost Stories Box

You think you know co-op games? You haven’t seen anything yet unless you’ve experienced Ghost Stories, the most brutal, punishing and shockingly easy to play game out there right now. It’s general simplicity masks an engine that’s designed to force you and your team to work together like a finely tuned machine. If you don’t stick together, you die. Hell, you’ll still probably die. This game hates you and wants you to lose.

In today’s episode of the Die Cast, I’m joined by Daniel Kalbacher, Toni Taylor-Salisbury and Tyler Mager as we suffer and struggle and scream through a game of Ghost Stories. Turn those lights down low, grab you bag of exorcism accessories and listen up. The future of the human world is at stake.
