Screener Squad: For Worse

For Worse movie review

FOR WORSE MOVIE REVIEW

Winter is wrapping up and romance is in the air, whether you’re a young adult taking your first steps into a relationship or an adult abandoning the burning wreckage of a sinking relationship. Directed, written, and starring Amy Landecker, For Worse is the story of a woman rediscovering the awkward vulnerability of finding love again after a divorce. Lauren (Amy Landecker) is a sober, single mother who’s just joined an acting class. Her scene partner Sean (Nico Hiraga) is young, hot, and sending signals that their in-class chemistry is not just a matter of acting. Sean invites Lauren to a wedding which is full of hot young singles high on the love that only a wedding cake and alcohol can provide. Lauren will have to cut loose in order to discover the flirty thriving woman that has been repressed by a spousal script and motherly duties while not losing the mature and elegant woman qualities she possesses as well. Bradly, Caroline, and Eoin save the date and cordially invite you to wedding puns, personal hardships with romance, and plenty of praise for the comedic talents of Bradly Whitford, Missi Pyle, Ken Marino, and Gaby Hoffman.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Born and raised in Dublin Ireland, Eoin currently lives in London and has been an avid film lover from as far back as they can remember. Eoin enjoys going to the cinema weekly regardless of the film: new, old, or the most random title. They have no preconceived notions when taking in a new film. They tend to look for the good in any film they watch and will always love the art form. They are a major fan of actress-led cinema and will never apologize for this one film bias.

Caroline Sulek

Caroline Sulek resides in Mckinney, TX with her son Henry and two cats: Sally and Rocky. As a mom, corporate baddie, and unabashed lover of all things silly, spooky, and creative, she brings a unique perspective to the One of Us network. Her love of art and movies started long ago when she and her brother, Wright, would spend entire summer vacations in front of the TV and she would draw portraits of Wright as he sat watching for hours. Caroline has been a frequent guest and fan favorite of the Trash in the Can podcast with her brother, Wright, and his life podcast partner, Eric Samaniego. Caroline enjoys the most gruesome of horror movies and the most bingeable of reality shows and anywhere in between!

Screener Squad: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms series review

A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS SERIES REVIEW

A century before Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, the first of her name, Queen of the Andals, Khaleesi of the great grass sea, the unburnt, breaker of chains and mother of dragons met Jon Snow, the King of the North, there was a hedge knight and squire who would become legendary. HBO presents a miniseries based on the novella by George R. R. Martin and set in the world of Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) or Dunk for short, has just buried his lord. According to Dunk, his lord’s final wish was that Dunk become a knight. To prove himself, he travels to Ashford to join a tourney of warriors representing the usual houses. There he befriends a young boy named Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) who wants nothing more than to be a squire to an ideal knight and live a life separate from the obligations of his house. Seeking favor from the lords of the houses, Dunk discovers the wealthy and powerful are a lot more sketchy than the poor and needy. With the help of Egg, he’ll navigate the path of a knight without losing his ideals and values. Bradly, Felix, and Eoin sing a song of what fire is left in the long running IP and if the second spin-off can still carry the fire. Readers may be left out in the cold waiting for The Winds of Winter, but cinephiles rejoice in what IMDB users are calling the best episode of all time within the six episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Highly Suspect Reviews: The Bride!

The Bride! movie review

THE BRIDE! MOVIE REVIEW

The 2020s seem to be the era of the return of the Universal monster. Not that you’d always recognize them as such. I suspect original director of The Bride of Frankenstein James Whale would be very confused by the existence of The Bride! but given that he was, in his time, an iconoclast, he might have dug it. Jessie Buckley plays Ida, a wild child in 1930s Chicago. At a dinner with friends at a mob-owned restaurant, she is possessed (Chris would argue, not literally) by the spirit of Frankenstein author Mary Shelley and goes a little crazy which leads to her sudden and tragic death. Flash to Frankenstein’s monster (pretty much just going by Frank and played by Christian Bale) who has gone to another mad scientist, Dr Euphronious (Annette Bening) to request that she create a companion for him, as a century alone has left him with his love of movies as his only companion (and yes, this love will be repeatedly relevant). Dredging up Ida’s body, they reanimate her. While Ida no longer remembers being Ida, most of her personality remains intact. Being told that she was already the partner of Frank, the two go on quite the adventure leading to some chaos that veers from Bonnie & Clyde to Moulin Rouge. There’s also police detective Jake (Peter Sarsgaard) and his secretary Myrna (Penélope Cruz). Myrna is actually the smart one, Jake knows it, and is happy about their arrangement, even if Myrna would prefer to be able to take some credit for her own brains in this misogynist time. The two gumshoes are in hot pursuit of the monsters but are slowly cluing into the fact that there’s more than just two criminals on the run happening here. Chris, Wright, Kim, and Rhett take a look at director Maggie Gyllenhaal’s sophomore effort and don’t exactly see eye-to-eye. While as most of the group finds the film electric, Chris thinks it never feels like it comes alive.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Deliberations of Doom)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar and theater management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).

Wright Sulek (The Other Boss, Trash in the Can, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, One Man’s Trash, Screener Squad)

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox. As of 2024, Wright has now been inducted into the Austin Film Critics Association as well as co-owns the One of Us network with Chris Cox.

Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

Rhett O’Hara

Rhett O’Hara has really been looking forward to writing this “about me”. He blames movies for a lot of things in his life. He blames seeing Batman Returns as a child for his interest in all things goth and camp. He blames seeing Akira at far too young of an age for his interest in films that dare to venture into the weirder side of things. He blames Midsommar for never visiting Sweden. Rhett has lived in Austin for a couple of decades, so he can speak fondly of the old days of renting DVDs from I Luv Video (Tetsuo the Iron Man left a mark) and buying peculiar documentaries (The Nomi Song, Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist) from Waterloo Video. Rhett also remembers reading an “about me” that stuck with him a few years back. Time continued and he felt a constant need to share “about me” as well. It wasn’t a voice telling him to do this but something akin to the feeling of knowing that someone is watching you without ever actually seeing that person. Rhett has been anxious and is only just now feeling a sense of relief writing this. He feels selfish though, knowing that this will continue on to the next host; the desire…. the urge…. no….the need to pass along a message that has existed ever since humanity started sharing thoughts in a written form. You must understand that he had no choice in this matter. Rhett is truly sorry for this, but he’s every bit of a pawn as you are now. Rhett is also contractually obligated to let you know that he has been a guest on the hit podcast Trash in the Can.

HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY: MINI EP 4: BONNIE AND CLYDE

Our next venture into classic 60s/70s Faye has us revisiting the film that turned the actress into an overnight sensation, 1967’s Bonnie and Clyde. Starring Warren Beatty and Faye as the infamous titular duo, this tale of crime and romance was one of the biggest hits of the year and single-handedly ushered in a new era of moviemaking. At the center of it was Faye’s portrayal of real-life outlaw Bonnie Parker, a young woman who, much like the actress, had her mind and her heart set on something bigger than herself. Host of the podcast Window Dressing, Madelaine Jane Aubel, returns to talk about this game-changing piece of cinema and how it helped to make Faye Dunaway a star.

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 371: THAT’LL DO, PODCASTERS

Chris and Wright punish themselves and you with some more bad Drumpf impressions as they cover some of the best physical media coming out. With apologies to Arrow and Shaw Brothers fans for a truncated look at the really great Shawscope Vol. 4 set, we nevertheless trudge through. We look at a Taiwanese film oft cited as one of the best films of the 2000s, maybe the movie with the most quoted line from Sam Jackson, a look at why Wright has such an enduring love of pigs, and Chris names one of our titles to be one of the best midnight movies ever made.

All titles were sent to Digital Noise by the distribution companies in question for the purpose of review. No other compensation was involved. The opinions here are our own.

PLEASE USE OUR IMAGE LINKS TO BUY ANY OF THESE TITLES ON AMAZON. IN FACT, PLEASE USE THEM AS YOUR STARTING POINT FOR ANYTHING YOU BUY OFF OF AMAZON. WE ARE AN AFFILIATE AND RECEIVE COMPENSATION FOR PURCHASES MADE FROM OUR LINKS.

Screener Squad: Dreams

Dreams movie review

DREAMS MOVIE REVIEW

Whenever I see a movie about marginalized groups of people in pursuit of a better life, I am tempted to quote Steinbeck and the nightmare that is the American dream. I’m not going to do that to introduce this film though I will quote the character Professor Walter Vale played by Richard Jenkins from a film titled The Visitor, “You can’t just take people away like that. Do you hear me? He was a good man, a good person. It’s not fair! We are not just helpless children! He had a life! Do you hear me? I mean, do YOU hear ME? What’s the matter with you?”. Please seek out that film, which is also about ICE, violent sexual assault, and the exploitation of human beings. Dreams starring Jessica Chastain asks the question: what sort of charity work is helping with the immigration process and is that charity involved in any nefarious activity? Jennifer McCarthy (Jessica Chastain) is helping and sponsoring a Mexican immigrant named Fernando Rodriguez (Isaac Hernández) who is a beautiful and graceful dancer. Not only is she allegedly helping him with work and immigration, but she’s also helping herself to a sexually controlling and somewhat manipulative relationship. But when the power dynamics shift with the ballet slipper on the other foot, the relationship crosses the border. Bradly, Kate, and Eoin discuss the dark themes of sexual control set and problematic immigration issues within the confines of the story and in our real world. They also mutually agree that rape scenes are completely unnecessary and that you should skip this one completely if you want to avoid seeing such a thing.

Screener Squad: Undercard

Undercard movie review

UNDERCARD MOVIE REVIEW

There are several ways to explain it but this obscure quote might help: “He who conquers the left side conquers the world, chief”. What does it mean? Work your jab. In theaters and featuring the Florida boxing locations of Liberty City and Miami, Undercard is led by Wanda Sykes in her first dramatic role. Sykes plays Cheryl ‘No Mercy’ Stewart who is a boxing coach at Baba T’s (William Stanford Davis) gym. She has a young prospect she’s training named Kordell (Xavier Mills) that could be a world champion one day. She is also reaching out to a young man from her past, Keith (Bentley Green) who could really use a wise trainer in his corner. Also, Keith was the child she left with her mother when drugs, alcohol, and a mess of bad choices had her down for the count. Keith is starting to take some steps to a path of violence, hustling, and dealing. Cheryl, now fully sober and sponsored, wants to show him how the talent he carries in his hands and the tenacity and perseverance he carries in his heart could lead him to a championship in the world of boxing. Bradly, Felix, and Caroline square up and unanimously agree that Bentley Green provides a star-turning performance in a plot-heavy standard sports film with more heart than brain. Also Felix explains the ins and outs of how the real sweet science of boxing translates to film.

HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY EP.4: BEVERLY HILLS MADAM/BARFLY/DON JUAN DEMARCO

Next up on Hollywood Royalty: Dunaway After Crawford, we head west to actual Hollywood (and thereabouts) for a collection of movies that sees Faye take on three different types of California women in three vastly different films. First up, Faye plays the boss of a group of high-class ladies of the night in the 1985 TV movie Beverly Hills Madam, then goes full deglam mode as an alcoholic haunting the bars of East L.A. in 1987’s Barfly, before playing a suburban housewife whose husband finds a renewed vigor in their longtime marriage in 1994’s Don Juan DeMarco. Host of the podcast Window Dressing, Madelaine Jane Aubel, joins me as we watch Faye shine in the Golden State.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan?, Hollywood Royalty)

Screener Squad: Breakdown: 1975

Breakdown 1975 movie review

BREAKDOWN: 1975 MOVIE REVIEW

At times, film has the power to give a voice to the voiceless and speak truth to a power that would ignore those voices. When a culture shifts its thinking and changes the method and way stories are told about people, and the world in general, a massive culture shift can occur and change film forever. According to the documentary Breakdown: 1975 there was no greater year in that cultural shift for cinema than 1975. Not just for epic cinephiles with giant Criterion closets, the timeless classics of 1975 can be enjoyed to this day; whether you’re a self-proclaimed future filmmaker or a bored on a Sunday Netflix subscriber. This documentary provides insights from some of cinema’s filmmakers such as Jodie Foster, Oliver Stone, Ellen Burstyn, and even Seth Rogen. Bradly, Eoin, and Frank discuss their favorite films of that epic year and the years at the cinema that changed their own personal lives forever. Frank praises Joan Crawford (shocker), Bradly celebrates the buried nonsense of John Wayne and Eoin gives some great insight on film making movie magic.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad Boss, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and maybe even providing some comments of his own.

Eoin Daly

Born and raised in Dublin Ireland, Eoin currently lives in London and has been an avid film lover from as far back as they can remember. Eoin enjoys going to the cinema weekly regardless of the film: new, old, or the most random title. They have no preconceived notions when taking in a new film. They tend to look for the good in any film they watch and will always love the art form. They are a major fan of actress-led cinema and will never apologize for this one film bias.

YOUR HOSTS

Eric Samaniego (Trash in the Can, Heart/Felt, One Man’s Trash, Highly Suspect Reviews)

Eric Samaniego is a multi-award show watching, sometimes comedian, sometimes writer who began life as a Muppet and 1930s screwball comedy obsessed goon and still carries a torch for all things felt, funny, and a little bit unhinged. With a passion for genre films, poor taste, and whiskey, he co-hosts Trash in the Can, a podcast that digs through cinema’s dustbin in search of the best worst movies alongside longtime co-conspirator Wright Sulek. Eric and Wright also bring their love of cinematic oddities to the big screen with One Man’s Trash, a monthly live screening series at Violet Crown Cinema in Austin, Texas, spotlighting cult classics, forgotten flops, and anything proudly wearing the label “so bad it’s good.” He also hosts Heart/Felt, a limited podcast series celebrating the 70th anniversary of The Muppets and the enduring legacy of Jim Henson. When not podcasting, Eric serves as an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who was the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797.
