The Punisher: One Last Kill special review

THE PUNISHER: ONE LAST KILL REVIEW

Marvel’s latest Special Presentation, The Punisher: One Last Kill, puts Frank Castle back in the crosshairs for a brutal, blood-soaked mission that finds the vigilante confronting old ghosts, unfinished business, and a city that seems determined to keep creating new targets. Set between Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 and Spider-Man: Brand New Day in the MCU timeline, the special serves as both a continuation of Frank’s story and a bridge to the street-level corner of Marvel’s future. Following in the footsteps of Marvel Special Presentations like The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and the acclaimed Werewolf by Night, One Last Kill embraces a much darker tone, delivering bone-crunching action, gallons of blood, and the kind of relentless violence that has made Frank Castle one of Marvel’s most feared antiheroes. Before the bullets start flying, however, the story takes time to examine the emotional wreckage left behind by a life built on vengeance. Rae, Neil, and T.C. gather in the One Of Us backroom armory to break this movie down much like Frank Castle himself breaks down for the first 20 minutes of this movie until he gets to work.

You can call me Rae. You can also call me a film lover. I’ll watch it all — small screen; big screen, and everything in between. I have attended and worked for Fantastic Fest and South by Southwest for many years. I married a film geek as well. While we don’t agree on everything, we agree on our love of movies.

Neil Anderson (Screener Squad)

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

Screener Squad: Devil May Cry Season 2

Devil May Cry Season 2 review

DEVIL MAY CRY SEASON 2 REVIEW

The apocalypse has been cancelled and the white rabbit has missed his tea party, all thanks to the heroic endeavors of Dante (Johnny Yong Bosch) and Lady (Scout Taylor-Compton). There is no rest for the wicked however; Dante and Lady must team up again to stop the evil Mundus (Ray Chase) from taking over Hell and invading the earth. From one of Capcom’s many successful smash hit game series, Netflix presents season two of Devil May Cry. Long ago, a powerful demon named Sparda rebelled against Mundus and sealed off the human realm for its protection. He fell in love with a human woman named Eva and had twin sons named Dante and Vergil. Dante’s recollections suggest his mother and brother were killed in a house fire and assassination. New intel and a slew of dead DARKOM soldiers prove that Vergil not only survived the home invasion, but is a powerful demon warlord himself positioned at the right hand of Mundus. Dante and Lady must keep the arcana out of the clutches of evil, and confront Vergil (Robbie Daymond). Bradly, Felix, and Bret let the bodies hit the floor while name dropping edgy rock bands from the 2000’s. Lore is sorted, video game pop-culture is discussed, and a deep dive into Vergil and Dante’s familial relationship is brought to therapy.

There he found not only fellowship in the revels of cinema and story, but his fiercest ally and beloved wife, Sonia Santamaria, with whom he roams the wide roads of the world in restless adventure. Though he lends his voice boldly to the chronicles of film with Necromancer Podcast, he is no mere teller of tales — for he has wrought sagas of his own in moving shadow and light, including Godzilla P.I., The World’s Best, and Violence of the Sun. In his hall dwell three cunning feline familiars — Johnny, Tony, and Ringo — and when not questing abroad, he and his companions wage noble battles of wit and strategy in games both tabletop and arcane.

Screener Squad: Beef Season 2

Beef season 2 review

BEEF SEASON 2 REVIEW

A self made billionaire once sang the lyrics “Now we got problems and I don’t think we can solve ’em. You made a really deep cut and now we got bad blood, hey!”. That’s Taylor Swift dropping wisdom in her lyrics that seem to accurately sum up the Netflix anthology series Beef about unresolved issues between strangers, friends, couples, employees, and employers. In season two, Joshua (Oscar Isaac) and Lindsay (Carey Mulligan) are wealthy in presence but financially stressed in private. While having a petty argument that slowly escalates into a violent domestic dispute, two of their employees Austin (Charles Melton) and his girlfriend Ashley (Cailee Spaeny) record their dispute on their phone. What starts as a concern for the safety of Lindsay slowly turns into blackmail as two young lovers try to cash in on the upper class dirty laundry thus creating the  titular beef. Ashley and Austin just want health benefits and better pay while Joshua and Lindsay want their facade of a marriage back. The cat and mouse game between the two couples also includes a plastic surgery conspiracy involving Chairwoman Park (Youn Yuh-jung). Bradly, Ryan, and Caroline discuss the gallows humour and social commentary regarding class warfare, struggling love in the face of financial burdens created by greed and power, and the unforgivably bad health care system. Enjoy the beef, it’s medium rare!

Hollywood Royalty: Dunaway after Crawford

HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY: EP.11 – IT HAD TO BE YOU/ALIAS/MISC. GUEST APPEARANCES

This week on Hollywood Royalty, we tune in to prime time Faye and her two prominent stints on series television in the 90s and 00s. First up, host of Heart/Felt, and co-host of Trash in the Can, Eric Samaniego, and I explore Faye’s short-lived 1993 CBS sitcom It Had to Be You, in which she starred as a big city book publisher who falls in love with a handsome widowed carpenter (Robert Urich) with three boys. After that, fellow One of Us contributor, and critic over at The Movie Buff, Nathan Flynn, and I go back to the early 2000s world of J.J. Abrams’ Alias where Faye enjoys a delicious three-episode season two guest arc as the head of Counterintelligence determined to bring down series stalwart Victor Garber. Finally, I provide a rundown of Faye’s guest appearances in between those two projects in a varied collection of shows, including Road to Avonlea, Touched by an Angel, and Soul Food.

Screener Squad: Swapped

Swapped movie review

SWAPPED MOVIE REVIEW

Michael B. Jordan once said “That’s one of the fun parts of becoming an actor. You can become whoever you want to be.” After many acclaimed live action roles, including his oscar winning performances as twins named Smoke and Stack, Michael B. Jordan is giving his talents and voice to an animated sea otter-ish critter called a pookoo named Ollie in the Netflix feature film Swapped. Ollie was taught by his father to not be curious and stay away from other creatures of the valley. Ollie is regaled with the nightmarish tale of the fire wolf who lay waste to the forest by setting it ablaze, chasing off the majestic Dzo, titanic tree-like creatures with the power to change an animal into any other kind of animal. After Ollie is involved in an incident with another island creature, he feels he may have doomed his family to starvation and he sets off on a quest to find the magic of the Dzo to redeem himself. As luck would have it he finds this elusive magic but in doing so swaps species with a Javan, a bird-like creature named Ivy (Juno Temple). In their new bodies, they’ll have to learn from each other to survive the harsh realities of nature, and find the truth in the legends of old. Bradly, Kate, and Dom discuss the birds, bees, giant tree looking elephant creatures, and critters in this animated family film featuring the voice of Tracy Morgan as a fish named Boogle who’s a surprising stand-out in the eat or be eaten adventure flick.

Highly Suspect Reviews: Power Ballad

Power Ballad movie review

POWER BALLAD MOVIE REVIEW

Paul Rudd’s charisma knows no bounds. It’s very evident in the newest film, Power Ballad, by John Carney (Once, Sing Street) where he plays a former rocker, now a moderately successful wedding singer in Ireland. One fateful wedding, Rick Power (Rudd) meets former boy-band superstar Danny Wilson (Nick Jonas) during an impromptu performance and the two hit it off. As they bounce ideas off each other, Rick plays one song that Danny gravitates towards. Six months later Rick realizes that Danny has stolen his song which has launched his comeback that he’s been trying unsuccessfully to accomplish for years. What follows is an extremely affable story of one man trying to grasp the credit he deserves and another reaping the benefits. John Carney beautifully weaves a story of likable characters that are desperately trying to prove themselves every step of the way. It’s a funny, sweet story that showcases Rudd’s insane chemistry with seemingly any other actor on screen and a deep appreciation of what it means to write a song from the heart. Listen as Drew, Beau, Nathan, and Wright discuss this wonderfully splendid tale of two musicians trying to prove themselves every step of the way.

Screener Squad: Margo’s Got Money Troubles

Margo's Got Money Troubles Season 1 review

MARGO’S GOT MONEY TROUBLES SERIES REVIEW

From prolific showrunner David E. Kelly comes a new Apple TV series Margo’s Got Money Troubles based on the novel of the same name by Rufi Thorpe. Margo (Elle Fanning) is an aspiring writer and college student who becomes pregnant after a brief affair with her married literature professor, Mark (Michael Angarano). Despite Mark’s objections, Margo chooses to have the baby, so she drops out of college to find work. Struggling to make ends meet, Margo makes the decision to start an OnlyFans page. At first, Margo hides this from her friends and family, but as her online fame grows, the truth comes out. This spurs Mark and his domineering mother (Marcia Gay Harden) to seek full custody of the child. If Margo wants to keep her baby, she will have to prove to the court that she can provide her child with a safe, healthy environment, but that isn’t easy when you are a sex worker, and your dysfunctional parents (Michelle Pfeiffer and Nick Offerman) are a former Hooters waitress, and a retired wrestler with a history of drug addiction. Two of our reviewers, Frank and Eoin, worship at the shrines of Saints Kelly and Pfeiffer while Marco is an agnostic. However, all three of them agreed that despite the series’ subject matter and heavy themes, this is a genuinely warm and funny show, one that should appeal to a wide, mainstream audience, not only fans.

Screener Squad: The Boys Season 5

The Boys season 5 review

THE BOYS SEASON 5 REVIEW

The Boys are back in town for one last bloody fight! Developed by Eric Kripke from Garth Ennis’ graphic novel series, the final season takes place a year after season 4’s disbandment of the crew. We find Hughie (Jack Quaid), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), and Frenchie (Tomer Capone) are held captive in a “Starlighter” internment camp while Butcher (Karl Urban) is still hatching a plan to take down Homelander (Antony Starr) once and for all. Starlight (Erin Moriarty) on the other hand has been infiltrating Firecracker’s (Valorie Curry) studio to finally air the footage of the tragic/murderous plane massacre from season 1 to ruin Homelander’s reputation. Once aired, Homelander takes ownership of the footage and the public ultimately stand with him. With Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) back in the fold as well, Butcher rounds the troops to bust the boys out of the camp and bring everyone back together, to find a way to kill Homelander, and take down Vought at the same time. There are times when it feels like the season starts to lose steam, but is ultimately brought back on the track with the whole cast’s committed performances. Most notably, Starr showcases such a wide range of emotions to highlight Homelander’s insecurities, rage, fear, and ego that makes his arc so complex and satisfying. Listen as Caroline, Ryan, and Wright discuss Amazon Prime’s The Boys Season 5 and the series as a whole and whether it sticks the landing or gets its cape stuck in a closed door.

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. You can follow him on Twitter but you’ll probably regret it.

Caroline Sulek (Screener Squad, Trash in the Can)

Caroline Sulek resides in Mckinney, TX with her son Henry and two cats: Sally and Rocky. As a mom, corporate baddie, and unabashed lover of all things silly, spooky, and creative, she brings a unique perspective to the One of Us network. Her love of art and movies started long ago when she and her brother, Wright, would spend entire summer vacations in front of the TV and she would draw portraits of Wright as he sat watching for hours. Caroline has been a frequent guest and fan favorite of the Trash in the Can podcast with her brother, Wright, and his life podcast partner, Eric Samaniego. Caroline enjoys the most gruesome of horror movies and the most bingeable of reality shows and anywhere in between!

Necromancer Ep 140 – They Were Roommates: Alucarda (1977)

NECROMANCER EP 140 – THEY WERE ROOMMATES: ALUCARDA (1977)

The Necromancers head to their last stop in the sapphic cinematic universe (for now). This convent may look ordinary, the ladies only roommates, but Bret’s horror pick, Alucarda, proves the devil is in the details. Will Shira share Guillermo del Toro’s admiration for the 1977 cult classic? Listen to find out and then stick around for their heartstopping rom com remixes.

YOUR HOSTS

Shira More (Necromancer, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Shira grew up in Dallas, TX, and need only put her palm to the ground to sense the direction of a semi-annual sale. She knows a little about a lot of things: Mary Shelley, Survivor (yes it’s still on), Otome Isekai’s, Slavoj Zizek. Is she method acting a supporting character in a Hallmark Christmas movie or is she just extremely undiagnosed? We’ll never know. When Shira’s not campaigning for French Kiss (1995) to finally be on streaming, you’ll find her debating the charming and unsettling similarities between rom coms and horror movies with Bret Dorman on the Necromancer podcast.

Bret Dorman (Necromancer, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Bret Dorman was forged in the frost-bound realms of Rochester, New York, tempered in the iron winds of Chicago and the marble-shadowed courts of the Greater DC dominion, before casting his banner beneath the blazing sun of Austin, Texas.

Screener Squad: Rooster

Rooster series review

ROOSTER SERIES REVIEW

Joe Haldeman once said “Bad books on writing tell you to “WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW”, a solemn and totally false adage that is the reason there exist so many mediocre novels about English professors contemplating adultery”. Greg Russo (Steve Carell) is a famous lowbrow author and creator of the edgy detective “Rooster” who has taken a teaching position at the same university his daughter Katie (Charly Clive) works. Her husband Archie (Phil Dunster), also a professor on campus, has knocked up a student named Sunny (Lauren Tsai). Greg lost the love of his life in a divorce involving adultery so he wants to be there to support his daughter in any way he can. Sunny wants the father of her child to be with her. Archie honestly just wants to be charmingly befuddled and have sexual relationships with both women. Bradly, Eoin, and Ryan discuss the show’s approach towards this high drama situation with a very soft comedic touch. Nothing is so serious that a joke or awkward cringe can’t solve, followed by a quick setting change and comedic observation from the supporting cast which includes John C. McGinley, Connie Britton, and Danielle Deadwyler.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad Boss, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and maybe even providing some comments of his own.

Eoin Daly

Born and raised in Dublin Ireland, Eoin currently lives in London and has been an avid film lover from as far back as they can remember. Eoin enjoys going to the cinema weekly regardless of the film: new, old, or the most random title. They have no preconceived notions when taking in a new film. They tend to look for the good in any film they watch and will always love the art form. They are a major fan of actress-led cinema and will never apologize for this one film bias.
