Quoth the Re-Animators, ‘Nevermore’! Horror Legends Seek to Kickstart Poe Film

“Director!” said I, “thing of evil!- Director still, if auteur or devil!– Whether passion sent, or Whether passion tossed thy film ashore, Desolate yet all macabre, on this movie horror genre — On this film of Horror genre — tell me truly, I implore — Is there — is there a Poe film to be had? — tell me— tell me, I implore”

Quoth Stuart Gordon “Nevermore.”

spOOUkie members, how are you on this night of harrow? Doing very creepy I assume? Well, I hope you’re not creeping, because that lovely Russian-speaking girl named Natasha hates it when you do that at work, and starts saying things like, “I’m gonna call the police!” Sorry fellas, even though you really love Michael Myers, that doesn’t mean that the ladies do as well (speaking from experience). Maybe try a good pick up line!

Anyways, if you haven’t known already, it seems that horror film veterans Stuart Gordon, Jeffrey Combs, and Dennis Paoli are going to try their hand at tackling a serious Edgar Allen Poe movie, entitled Nevermore. They are currently trying to raise some funds on it via Kickstarter, and their goal is $375,000. Currently, their efforts have raised a total of $61,360, and they have 10 days left to hit their goal. They released a video in where they discuss what it is they are trying to accomplish. So let us put on our surgeon gloves, and let’s figure out the Grey’s Anatomy of this trailer. And (Quoth the Joker) Here. We. Go!:

So after watching this video… all I could say is FOREVERMORE! GIVE US FOREVERMORE I IMPLORE! Seriously, this looks like it has the potential to be nothing short of phenomenal. At first, I was skeptical, because one, I’m still groaning from that last Edgar Allen Poe film The Raven. Yeah, it was cool I guess, but it is honestly a film we did not need. So when I heard that the director of the cult hit The Re-Animator wanted to make a Poe film, I honestly was just confused. Now, I haven’t seen The Re-Animator, but I was told…

Hold on, I’m getting a call from Mr. Salisbury. *Yes*. *Mhm*. *Okay, thank you Master Salisbury*. Well folks, it seems that I have to strap myself on this table that is lying under a blade that swings like a pendulum as punishment for not seeing this film (Interns aren’t allowed out of the basement for movie night).

Anyways, I was told that the movie was bat-shit crazy, involving a severed head performing oral sex. Now THOSE people want to make a film about Poe? I didn’t know what to make of it. However, when I did some research, apparently that was adapted from an H.P. Lovecraft story. I’m no literature geek, but I know enough that stories of the Lovecraftian nature, deal with people whose minds can not comprehend staring in to the void of the unexplainable. So based on that, and also the fact that they have already done an adaption of one of Poe’s poems, The Pit in the Pendulum, it looks like these guys are really passionate and understand the craft of good literature, Edgar Allen Poe included.

What also makes me excited, is that Nevermore is actually adapted from the stage play done by the same duo of Combs and Gordon. The press has really been praising it, calling it a masterpiece and saying that Combs performance of Eddie Poe is nothing short of astonishing.  They say that his performance is the definitive portrayal of our favorite poet. The little taste he gave us in that video was both hilarious and deserved an Oscar nomination.

In the video, when they were talking about how Poe’s stories and poems were essentially him writing a metaphorical representation of his personal experiences and feelings of fear, you really believe that the people wanting to make this film have such a huge passion for the guy. Especially when you hear them say they want to make a REAL Edgar Allen Poe movie. So while they are talking about it, it seems like their goal is to basically reverse engineer the work of Mr. Poe. By that, I mean they want a film about the actual life of the Poet, but dramatize it and add in a cinematic manifestation of the metaphors Edgar presents in his literature. So if that is the case, then I am 100% there. It is indeed time for us have a truly poetic film about a poet. One that is made by unpretentious people that have a passion for having fun, making film, and loving the craft that goes in to great literature.  So I just shove my money in the floppy disk drive right? Is that how the internet works?

So fellow spookie OOUies, what do you think about this project? Are you excited about the movie? Will you throw down for a Poe down? Whatever it is, comment below and Let One of Us know!

Darth Vader Prepares To Bring The Dark Side To Your TV

We are still awaiting some huge news on the Star Wars Episode VII front, but while we wait we have been seeing some bits and pieces of some other really cool happenings in the Star Wars universe on a smaller scale. Folks over at the European Brand Licensing Show got a sneak peak into some of Disney’s Star Wars plans and one of them happens to involve one of the series’ most iconic characters.

Attendees of the aforementioned show received a brochure with some of the cool release plans regarding Star Wars properties including the release of the LEGO Star Wars games on mobile platforms sometime in 2014, news that Star Wars Episode VII is currently slated for a Summer/Spring 2015 release and quite possibly the biggest bombshell of the bunch is that there are plans to release a series of TV specials featuring non other than Darth Vader.

The image of the schedule gave no further details, but I have to say that the prospect of a Darth Vader TV show is pretty exciting to me. We live in exciting times in general as Star Wars fan as we await any huge news in the casting department of the new film from J.J. Abrams, but all of the new content coming out of Disney I feel is something to get hyped up about- unless of course we are doomed to relive the disappointment the prequels rained down on fans.

Are you excited about a Darth Vader themed TV series? Who do you want to see cast in Star Wars Episode VII? What additional types of Star Wars themed content would you like to see?

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Trailer

This week, the trailer for the 50th Anniversary of Doctor was released. Not to be confused with the trailer for the 50 Anniversary episode, which is still to come.

This trailer, aimed to tease the Anniversary special but pay homage to the 50 years of Doctor Who, not an easy feat considering the video itself is a mere one minute long. For the most part, I think they succeeded. This was one the most exciting, well produced trailers I’ve seen and incredibly tantalising content for Doctor Who.

Of course, there are omissions which stand out. Certain Doctors get more screen time than others. In particular, The second and eighth are scarcely featured. However, I found the silhouetted second Doctor to be quite effective and evocative. The eighth Doctor, not so much. I get that the older Doctors only have a certain amount of material that can potentially be usable given they are no longer with us, but Paul McGann is not only here but still working as the Doctor. Couldn’t they have got better source material for him?

I’m pretty sure McGann can be heard during the monologue however, over Matt Smith and that leads to the most exciting thing about the trailer – it was packed with so much content over the 50 years that it is impossible to catch it all in one go.

What say you? Did you catch all the hidden content? Did you enjoy the trailer? Comment below.

Terror At 15 Seconds: Watch The First Instagram Horror Film

Hello One of Us crew! My name is Tim Buel and I am an independent filmmaker and podcaster from Southern California. I am here today to talk about something myself and my dear friend Cody Rhyse cooked up over the last few months, that Brian Salisbury graciously invited us to showcase here on One of Us: 15 Seconds of Horror!

This past June, Instagram launched a new video feature in addition to their usual photo uploading service. At this point in time, Vine was rampant with short sketches and comedy bits, yet was sincerely lacking in genre creativity. And with Vine only allowing 6 seconds of video, Instagram’s 15 seconds certainly gave a lot more to play with. I jokingly tweeted after the video feature’s reveal, “I will now be exclusively directing edgy, 15 second short horror films on Instagram” and the seed of the idea was unintentionally planted. I couldn’t stop thinking about it and told Cody of my concept of shooting 15 second horror vignettes. Cody and I had just finished writing a horror feature and were itching to start working on something. He loved the idea and we began to brain storm on a few different short concepts. We also both loved the idea of shooting completely in-camera and using the constraints of no post-production (besides a handy Instagram filter) to boost creativity. All audio would have to be in-camera, and any effects would need to be practical. No room for CGI or digital trickery! The project ended up becoming our own Dogme 95 of sorts as we stuck to these constraints throughout the project and shot with only what was available to us within the Instagram iOS app.

Screen Shot 2013-10-21 at 1.29.17 AM

After launching the first segment entitled, “Worm,” we began to shoot them every week or so for the next few months while drafting the help of my wife, Rayna and Cody’s girlfriend, Karina as extra actors. After a while, a through line began to appear in the segments’ “stories” and it was apparent that all of the vignettes were connected. This was an accident but one we were happy fell into our laps. The only catch was, the chronology was mixed up. Things seemed to be happening out of sequence and being revealed as the story continued. We began to run with it. We loved the accidental “Pulp Fictioning” of our horror series and thought it added an element of mystery if the through line was hazy. After a few months, Cody and I agreed that the first series of vignettes were wrapping up and decided to cap it at a 13 episode season and then move on to another theme or story element for the next series.

Above, we have the chronologically correct edit for all 13 shorts for Series I of 15 Seconds of Horror now put together as a short film in and of itself. What we would love to hear from you are your ideas and concepts that you would like to see used for Series II! We plan on announcing the theme based off of your feedback and shooting the next episodes as soon as possible! The shorts are usually released through my personal Instagram account (and still will be), but will also be premiering here on One of Us in Youtube format every time a new episode is live! So check it out! We hope you enjoy it and invite you to join along with any Instagram horror shorts you make by using the hashtag #15SecondsofHorror or #15SoH when you post it! We would love to see your work and hope you guys give us some great ideas for Series II! Thanks!

Watch a Movie with Us: ‘Halloween’

It’s our favorite month of the year, October, and we’re celebrating by bringing some Halloween classics to “Watch a Movie With Us” that fill us with the spirit of the season.

Like, duh, Halloween.

As has been previously reported, oh, ten MILLION times, this is one of Brian’s very favorite movies ever, and to make sure this fact is cemented in your minds, he and Chris have brought in Jason Murphy from Rage Select to tag team with Brian on revealing their almost embarrassing wealth of knowledge about the minutiae of this horror classic.

Although we’ll be watching the new 35th anniversary Blu-ray edition of the film, we’ve tried to make it so you can watch along with us in any format you have…assuming you’re not watching it on the wrong speed or something. But if you do want to watch the same version we are (which admittedly, we sometimes comment on the differences in the new transfer’s look) you can buy it on Amazon here…

Halloween 35th Anniversary

Watch a Movie with Us: ‘Carrie’

All Hallows Eve is almost upon us and in celebration of our favorite holiday, OneOfUs.Net is bringing you more of the world of classic horror, but with our own twist…watch that classic horror with us!

According to Wikipedia (so take that as you will) Brian De Palma’s directorial take on Stephen King’s Carrie is one of the most popular movies watched by teens on Halloween. It was a huge success both with audiences and critics when it came out in 1976, and even got an Oscar nod for actress Sissy Spacek and Best Supporting for actress Piper Laurie. But best of all (for our commenting purposes) it’s got John Travolta as one of the baddies and it’s DELICIOUSLY dated as hell.

Oh, you know this one is gonna be good.

On this loving mockery of a commentary track you’re gonna get your hosts, Brian and Chris, but as well Luke Mullen joins us and a special one-hour appearance by everyone’s favorite furious curmudgeon, Jason Murphy from Rage Select.

If you’re a Time Lord subscriber or above, you can download it right here.

And remember, although we’re watching the Blu-ray release, you can watch this wherever it’s available (except on TV with commercials, silly). It’s even on Netflix now, so that’ll make it even easier. But just in case you want to pick up the same version we’re watching, you can pick it up from Amazon here…

Baron Cohen Harbors Mercurial Nature, Still Unfit To Play Queen Frontman

Freddie Mercury is a music legend. Love him or hate him, Mercury’s amazing vocal range and commanding stage presence rocketed him and his band Queen to stardom and marked the man as one of the most well known and loved rock icons of the last century.

Making a movie about Freddie Mercury’s life seemed like a no-brainer, but just who could they cast to play the many complex sides of the larger than life Mercury? To find a person who not only looked enough like Mercury, but had access to that weird energy he could draw out of people and inhabit to star in a biopic about Freddie must of been a daunting task for anyone to cast, but everyone thought they had hit pay dirt when Sacha Baron Cohen became attached to the project…

Alas, twas not to be.

Fellow Queen bandmate, Brian May, who  is helping develop the upcoming film (along with Queen drummer Roger Taylor) recently spoke to music magazine Classic Rock about the details surrounding Cohen’s dismissal.

“What led us to that conclusion was the last three movies that he’s made – The Dictator, Les Miserables and Hugo – in which he makes outstanding performances, but they’re very much Sacha Baron Cohen performances. And we thought there has to be no distraction in the Freddie movie. You have to really suspend that disbelief – the man who plays Freddie, you have to really believe is Freddie. And we didn’t think that could really happen with Sacha.”

So it appears that the reason is that like Mercury, Cohen has too strong a cult of personality to be anybody else but himself. Cohen’s work up to this point has been characters either he or other people have created, and in that realm Cohen can inject himself into the gaps. To wholly transform into a fully actualized real life person is a talent Cohen has let to show us he has, most likely he’d try and throw in one of his usual character ticks and that would throw the whole movie out of whack. What makes Cohen so like Mercury is the very same reason he could never play the man.

So What do you folks think? Are you excited to see a movie About Freddie Mercury and who do think should play him? Oh, and as a bonus let’s hear what your favorite Queen or Freddie Mercury song is as well!

Here is my favorite Queen song:

Rock On!

Man Attacks Director Michael Bay On The Set Of TF4

Every once and awhile in this life, you come across a phrase or sentence you never thought anyone would have to say (or in this case type). Today is such a day for me as I relay the following to you: some guy in Hong Kong attacked Michael Bay on set of  Transformers: Age Of Extinction with an air conditioning unit.

Sounds like I’m joking. I should be joking.

I’m not joking.

Early reports on this incident had stated that Bay had been attacked by two brothers, but this information proved to be false and Paramount was quick to clear things up and offer an official story. Bay’s assailant (described as probably on drugs), who had already been a nuisance to a handful of crew members earlier that day rushed onto the set and swung the air conditioner (odd weapon choice, but you work with what you have at hand) directly at the director’s head. Bay was able grab the unit and wrestle it away from his attacker at which point set security stepped in took control of the situation. When the police arrived they also had to tussle with the man as well as two other people with him and all three individuals were in the end arrested.

One has to wonder what was going through that guy’s head. Perhaps in his altered state he thought the air conditioner was a little Autobot and he and Breezy (had to name the little guy something, didn’t I?) just wanted to go over and give pointers to Mr. Bay on making the film better. Just like they say at the end of the Tootsie Pop commercial, “The world may never know.”

So what do you think of all this foolishness? Let us know in the comments below.

‘Thor: The Dark World’ predicted to strike lightning at box office

Looks like the box office figures for the next Marvel movie have been nailed down, and by a rather powerful hammer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, tracking has started for how much the supehero sequel Thor: The Dark World is going to gross on its opening weekend, and it’s nothing short of gangbusters. The reported figure by Disney’s studio rivals has been that of $75 million or higher, which would surpass the first film’s numbers of about $65 million with ease, and could be in the running for one of the biggest openings in history for the month of November. On top of that, it would continue Disney/Marvel’s winning streak of success, which was extended earlier this year with Iron Man 3’s barrage of broken records. Thor: The Dark World will open domestically in three weeks on November 8.

Seeing that the real question is not if but rather how much this will be successful, there are factors here that are still worth pondering over to pinpoint how well this film will really do. For one, ever since The Avengers became the gargantuan smash hit it is today, popular interest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has increased significantly, which should amount to subsequent Disney/Marvel doing great business for the rest of the forseeable future. While the massive success of Iron Man 3 can be considered proof of this, it should be noted that the Iron Man franchise has three standalone films over a span of five years, and the rest of the core Avengers team members have only had one film each that were nowhere near the juggernaut numbers of ol’ Shell-head. Saying that, though, if we were to use the logic of the MCU’s popularity growing more and more and consider how Iron Man’s sequels have been making more money than the last, then there’s a good chance that Thor: The Dark World could be bigger than we think. Besides, the film looks fantastic, so it’s got that going for it as well.

What do you guys think? What’s your prediction of Thor: The Dark World‘s opening weekend total? Do you have your own theories as to how much money this is going to make? Post your thoughts in the comments below.
