Movie Review: Lone Survivor

Martin, Chris, Ashley and JC all are deep in the shit of Oscar season reviews. Although they all agree that the Mark Wahlberg-starring “Lone Survivor” being submitted for awards consideration might be a bit presumptuous, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a nail-biter of a movie.

Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch, and Taylor Kitsch all fight for the right to be the titular spoilery Lone Survivor in this film by Peter Berg, more than making up for whatever the hell possessed him to make “Battleship”. Check out our thorough analysis right here on Highly Suspect Reviews!

Gerard Butler Surfs Into ‘Point Break’ Remake

Whether he’s saving the president of the United States from certain doom or a portraying a grieving father who seeks to bring down the judicial system via elaborate deadly schemes whilst in prison – Gerard Butler sure has a thing for silly action movies. So it seems fitting that news comes that the action star is about to grab a surfboard and ride the casting wave into the remake of Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 film, Point Break. I guess that’s better news than a new rom-com starring him and Katherine Heigel.

The remake is being put together by The Fast and the Furious cinematographer Ericson Core from a script by Kurt Wimmer. Wimmer is the screenwriter who recently penned scripts for the Total Recall remake, Salt and one of the aforementioned silly action films starring Gerard Butler, Law Abiding Citizen. Core on the other hand does not have much in the way of directing experience minus the 2006 football flick Invincible starring Mark Wahlberg.

I’m not holding out much hope that a remake of Point Break is going to be even slightly good. I anticipate that it will be similar to the Total Recall remake that just came out in that it will have style to spare, but will feel completely insubstantial to the original film ,leaving us all to wonder what the point was to begin with. Of course we will all know the answer – to make money- and if that’s the case I don’t know that it will break the bank in that regard either.

The original film starred Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze where Reeves played an FBI agent that goes undercover in order to catch a gang of surboarding bank robbers. The remake places Butler in the part of Bodhi (played by Swayze in the original) as an extreme sports athlete who saves and recruits Johnny Utah (played by Reeves in the original) to be a part of his group of international criminals. It is not yet known who will be cast to play Johnny Utah in the remake.

What are your thoughts on a Point Break remake? Is Gerard Butler the right choice? Who would you like to see play Johnny Utah? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Inside The Locker: BCS Championship Commentary

Football is a game of halves, but to win you have to take your opponent to the fourth quarter and give 110%. Before we, the Inside the Locker crew, sat down to record a live commentary for the BCS National Championship game, I thought these were merely overly-cliched platitudes. As it turns out, they were the subtle harbingers of our undoing.

We were live and kicking in the first half.  J.C., Elliott, Adam, and I were joined again by their friend and sports nerd extraordinaire Andrew Crawford for plenty of jokes and non-sequitur hijinks. We were answering questions and, like Auburn, we were rolling.

But then, fortunes shifted. The router at The Red Keep, a device that had never previously been the subject of a single controversy, decided to stop giving even 1%. We therefore couldn’t take our live game into the fourth quarter as Florida State definitively and spectacularly did with Auburn.

However, we still recorded our thoughts, jokes, and geeky conversations and have compiled the whole commentary here for your listening pleasure. It sucks that we couldn’t broadcast live what turned out to be one of the best college football national championships in history, but we hope our half-live version entertains you.

Enjoy!

And never mock the platitudes.

Happy Birthday Nicolas Cage! 6 Roles We Wish You Played

Did you like that picture? I think it’s a little off to be honest. There’s just something about it that makes it look…AB-normal!

Where the hell are my rim shots?!

Yeeup, it’s official. Mr. Nicolas Cage is now an old man. On January 7th, 2014, he turned to the ripe old age of 50. That is literally half a century old! It sure looks like this Cage is getting rusty (Yeah, I hate myself). That being said, Cage’s career has been really diverse and interesting to say the least. His roles have ranged from baby kidnapper all the way up to crackhead detective, and everything in between. Usually portraying crazy ass characters, his fame has basically become a cultural phenomenon, especially on the internet. One might say that he has become a… National Treasure!

Okay, no more jokes. I promise!

So in celebration of his long and prosperous career, we’ve decided to give Mr. Cage 6 candles on his cake (costing 10 cents each of course!), and each candle represents a role we wish he played! Why did we give him an extra candle? Well (A) we missed his birthday by a day. And (B)…

So Nicky C., close your eyes, take a deep breath, and make a wish!

1. Meth Crazed Hitler

Adolf Hitler received methamphetamine injections quite regularly, which would probably explain why such a short guy, contained so much Führery (for the record, that sounded better in my head). So who better to portray a crazed man flying on meth that shouts excessively and angrily? I would pay money to see Mr. Cage dawn a Nazi uniform, snort some meth, and just go bat-shit insane for an hour and a half. Just imagine Nic Cage giving one of Hitler’s energetic speeches while throwing his body across the stage like a rag doll. Throw in a poorly done German accent, and you’ve got Nazi gold!

2. Spock

This one would be completely the opposite of his type cast… which is exactly why I want to see it! For a man who runs on a chaos engine, it would just be so bizarre to see him play someone that is completely cold and logical. I personally don’t think he could do it, but it would be quite entertaining to watch scenes where you can tell that he is trying really hard to restrain himself. Although, I do want to see Spock lose his shit for once, and boy can Nicolas Cage lose his shit! Can you envision how awesome it would be to see Nicolas Cage Spock in the sex-crazed Vulcan rage of pon farr? I would give every last dollar I had to watch him running around the Enterprise screaming and humping everyone.

3. Chucky

Come on! A psychopathic serial killer demon doll?! Why HASN’T this happened yet? Chucky has this weird charisma to him that I would have LOVED to see Nic Cage portray. He probably would go all-out psycho, and to see his most absurd faces poorly CG’d on a knife-wielding doll would create an image that would stick with me in my nightmares forever. And the god-awful one-liners would be the worst kind of drivel known to horror films, which is certainly saying something.

4. The Doctor

OKAY, so before you send out your homemade Dalek prototypes to exterminate me, hear me out! GOD FORBID they ever do an American version of Doctor Who. That is something that nobody wants to see, and should never be touched nor entertained as an idea. However, with Elementary basically being the Americanized Sherlock, let’s just entertain this idea for a second. IF there were to be an American Doctor, I would love to see Nicolas Cage have a crack at it. If he dialed his craziness back a bit, and brought out his more intellectual side, I believe he can deliver on the time lord’s fast talking quirkiness.

OR, it could be so unspeakably horrible that it becomes a fixture of our culture, similar to that of Troll 2. Allons-y Doctor Cage!

5. The Joker

If you haven’t figured out already, Mr. Cage is one crazy guy, and nobody embodies crazy like the Joker. If you haven’t seen Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleansin where he plays a cracked out detective, let’s just say that there is something almost Joker-esque about his performance. Not necessarily a Heath Ledger Joker, but leaning more towards a Jack Nicholson Joker. Also, I feel like he can add a little bit of flamboyancy to make the Joker closer to that of what we see in Batman: The Animated Series. I’ll just let this video speak for itself.

6. Gollum/Smeagol

I love me some Andy Serkis. I really do, and it is a CRIME that he didn’t get the recognition he deserved for this role. But damn it, would I kill to see Nicolas Cage have a crack at portraying a creature with a multiple personality disorder. To see him talk to himself in two distinct yet equally grating voices and contort his body in an inhumanly manner would be worth the price of admission alone. In fact, forget The Hobbit, let’s just have the movie be about the adventures of Gollum, played by Nicolas Cage! That would be quite… precious.

So fellow OOUies, why don’t you wish Mr.Cage a happy birthday by telling us what roles you want to see him play! Whatever your thoughts, comment below and let One of Us know!

Gail Simone is walking Deadpool down the aisle

Ten years of waiting have finally paid off! After watching DC mistreat Gail Simone for a decade (the same why they do with MOST of their writers), it is time to rejoice! Gail Simone has announced that she will working with Marvel once again! Not only has Simone returned to the House of M, but she is writing Deadpool again, at an important moment of the character’s life: his wedding! I cannot contain all of this happiness!

Simone is one of the best comic book writers working today in my opinion, and the fact that she’ll be writing one of my favorite Marvel characters once more is beyond amazing news. In the past, she has written books for both of the big houses. She has worked on such comics as Birds of Prey and Batgirl at DC and she also had an amazing run with Marvel characters Deadpool and Agent X  ten years ago.

It has been revealed that Simone’s story will be set during Deadpool’s wedding. That’s right, The Merc with the Mouth is getting hitched. Of course, nothing concerning Deadpool is simple or clear and this announcement is no different. We have no idea who his bride will be. Still, we have some idea about who might be on the guest list. If this image released to promote the event is any indication, it’s going to be a grand affair.

This will certainly be an event to remember and I’m looking forward to a Deadpool-style wedding. Gail Simone apparently shares my enthusiasm. The scribe had this to say about the news on her personal Tumblr:

“Am I Excited? To be writing my first Marvel story in TEN YEARS? Yes I am!”

Simone will not be the only writer working on this story. In fact, many of the other writers have written for Deadpool in the past. Fabian Nicieza, Mark Waid, Joe Kelly, Christopher Priest, Jimmy Palmiotti, Frank Tieri, Daniel Way & Victor Gischler will all be contributing to story, which is coming to stores this April. I wonder how many items on Deadpool’s registry also appear in the United States military’s weapon inventory?

Are you pleased to see Gail Simone return to Marvel for this occasion? Who do you think Deadpool’s bride-to-be is? Share your thoughts and well-wishes in the comments!

Katee Sackhoff Wants To Be In Upcoming ‘Star Wars’ Films

Without a doubt, one of my favorite modern actresses is the kick-ass Katee Sackhoff. Ever since her brilliant performance as Starbuck on Battlestar Galactica, Ms. Sachkoff has retained a loyal following of geeks and nerds (myself included) who enjoy the emotionally-layered and strong female characters she often plays.

In a recent interview, Sackoff spoke passionately about her love for Star Wars and how much she would love to be in the upcoming movies.

“Star Wars meant everything to me growing up. Star Wars was, I mean, it was the first time I remember seeing three movies that all kind of went together. It was just an amazing final understanding of what a trilogy was. I was absolutely obsessed… The sad thing is, I never wanted to be Princess Leia, I always wanted to be Han Solo! …If J.J. would listen, I would play a rock in the Star Wars movies.”

Sackhoff has already done some Star Wars work as a voice actress in the animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but to get her in one of the live action movies, even in a small part, would be a treat. Although the thought of Sackhoff wielding a lightsaber does sound pretty cool, were Abrams to cast her, I would hope that he would be clever enough not to make her a Force user, but instead play some sort of warrior or smuggler/mercenary.

Other highlights from the interview include Sackhoff expressing interest in getting to play Harley Quinn, the chance that her character from the Riddick series, Dahl, might make further appearances, and talking about her experience auditioning for the Wonder Woman TV show and being told that she wasn’t the  “Wonder Woman type” but could audition to play the heroine’s best friend.

The sad part of the interview is that it is all about projects she and her fans  would like to do rather than actual projects Sackhoff is doing. This isn’t to say that Sackhoff hasn’t been busy, as she has been playing Deputy Victoria “Vic” Moretti on the greatly underrated A&E series, Longmire since 2012. Longmire is set to release its third season this year and the first season is currently available on Netflix, so if you are hungry for more Katee and just a good modern western on TV other than Justified, I highly recommend you give the series a shot.

CES 2027 – OmniCorp unveil their latest product; Robocop

Right now the Consumer Electronic Show is in full swing in Las Vegas. To capitalize on the the attention of technology, Sony Pictures have revealed a faux 2027 keynote presentation from OmniCorp in which they reveal their latest product the “RC-2000” or as you may know it, Robocop.

In the video, which can be seen below, a spokesman for Omnicorp takes the stage to unveil a robot with morality – a central part of the new film. Studios have released similar videos before to promote films (see Prometheus’ TED talk).

Starring Joel Kinnaman as Murphy/RoboCop alongside Samuel L Jackson and Gary Oldman, Robocop is a modern retelling of the classic 80’s SciFi film. I’m still not sure about this one guys, the concept sounds interesting and there is some interesting imagery, but the PG 13 rating and the overly CG sequences have me very worried.

Fox Wants No Monkey Business, Locks Down Matt Reeves For Third ‘Planet of the Apes’ Film

I’m sure by now you’ve seen the incredibly brief teaser trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes which shows almost nothing, but brought the awesome in spades. If you loved the trailer as much as me, then it will come as no surprise that 20th Century Fox isn’t messing around and has secured Dawn director Matt Reeves for the currently untitled sequel.

With the success of Rise of the Planet of the Apes– which I just re-watched the other day and still love unconditionally- Fox has big hopes for the sequel and with the excitement drummed up from the teaser it comes as no surprise that they wanted to nail down Reeves for the foreseeable future.

Reeves previously directed Cloverfield, which love it or hate it, was an event film unlike many at the time it was released. After that, he delivered one of the best remakes I’ve ever seen with Let Me In (remake of Let the Right One In). It’s obvious, at least to me, that Reeves has got what it takes to bring excitement to this franchise. As much as I would have liked to see Rupert Wyatt return for the sequel, I’m at least glad to see someone like Reeves take over. There’s every possibility that he could drop the ball, but quite frankly, I love Cloverfield and I love Let Me In so I think he can pull it off.

We will see if keeping Reeves on board for a third film was a good decision or not when Dawn of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on July 11th.

What did you think of Rise of the Planet of the Apes? Are you excited about Dawn? What are your thoughts on Reeves as a director? Sound off below!
