Lyrae Anderson (Screener Squad)

You can call me Rae. You can also call me a film lover. I’ll watch it all — small screen; big screen, and everything in between. I have attended and worked for Fantastic Fest and South by Southwest for many years. I married a film geek as well. While we don’t agree on everything, we agree on our love of movies.

Neil Anderson (Screener Squad)

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

Screener Squad: Bang Bang

Bang Bang movie review

BANG BANG MOVIE REVIEW

Float like a Butterfly. Sting like a bee. Get your head examined and live with CTE. This quote is not quite right, but it’s the reality of what boxers are left with after their time in the ring is at an end and the promoters high tail it outta town. Former pro class boxer Bernard “Bang Bang” Rozy (Tim Blake Nelson) lives alone in a small house. His only companions are empty bottles and constant pain. When the flare-ups in his legs and headaches are especially incapacitating, he has a wheel chair to assist in his mobility. His estranged daughter Jen (Nina Arianda) has a new job opportunity and calls upon Bernard to watch after her son Justin (Andrew Liner) for a couple days. Reluctantly, he agrees and sees in his grandson Justin a possible path to redeeming his sins of the past; a historys that involves another former boxer named Darnell Washington (Glenn Plummer) who’s running for office. Bang Bang is a film that dares to look past the triumph of the human spirit and ponders what the cost of that is to the mind and body. Bradly, Felix, and Rhett discuss the conventional tropes of the sports film and how this movie breaks away from such traditional storytelling.  Also between the three hosts we find out which one was in fact a former fighter!

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad Boss, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and maybe even providing some comments of his own.

R.Felix Finch (Screener Squad)

A native of Sacramento, California, and having spent his post-pubescent years in Virginia, Nevada, Texas, and New York, Felix now finds himself pursuing his Juris Doctor at Emory University School of Law in Atlanta, Georgia. Nothing is more calming to Felix than the comfort of Chaos, as his time in professional wrestling and on other podcasts has demonstrated, and Felix brings a love for the most absurd outings in the realms of cinema, finding his escape in things such as the overly complex world of Jupiter Ascending and perusing the unbelievably low-budget offerings of Tubi, which Felix is fully convinced is a Psi-Op. In addition to finding Felix here on OneOfUs.net, you can Check him out on TikTokInstagram, and YouTube sharing his life in Law School as “TheBrokeLawStudent.”

Rhett O’Hara

Rhett O’Hara has really been looking forward to writing this “about me”. He blames movies for a lot of things in his life. He blames seeing Batman Returns as a child for his interest in all things goth and camp. He blames seeing Akira at far too young of an age for his interest in films that dare to venture into the weirder side of things. He blames Midsommar for never visiting Sweden. Rhett has lived in Austin for a couple of decades, so he can speak fondly of the old days of renting DVDs from I Luv Video (Tetsuo the Iron Man left a mark) and buying peculiar documentaries (The Nomi Song, Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist) from Waterloo Video. Rhett also remembers reading an “about me” that stuck with him a few years back. Time continued and he felt a constant need to share “about me” as well. It wasn’t a voice telling him to do this but something akin to the feeling of knowing that someone is watching you without ever actually seeing that person. Rhett has been anxious and is only just now feeling a sense of relief writing this. He feels selfish though, knowing that this will continue on to the next host; the desire…. the urge…. no….the need to pass along a message that has existed ever since humanity started sharing thoughts in a written form. You must understand that he had no choice in this matter. Rhett is truly sorry for this, but he’s every bit of a pawn as you are now. Rhett is also contractually obligated to let you know that he has been a guest on the hit podcast Trash in the Can.

HIGHEST 2 LOWEST MOVIE REVIEW

Rick Rubin once said “There’s a tremendous power in using the least amount of information to get a point across” and Spike Lee once said “I think it is very important that films make people look at what they’ve forgotten”. Apple Plus presents Highest 2 Lowest a film directed by Spike Lee adapted from the Akira Kurosawa film High and Low. David King (Denzel Washington) is a self made millionaire who built his empire on the foundations of music. He could hear the potential in young artists with big dreams in need of a stage. After decades of gold and platinum records, the board is ready to sell. However, David does not want to cash out to a company that will use the label’s library to sell consumer products. He devises a plan to buy out a partner on the board and maintain his majority shares of the company. His plans are suddenly interrupted by a phone call demanding 17.5 million dollars if David ever wants to see his son alive again. Our critics Bradly, Jordan and Rae discuss their relationship with the original Kurosawa feature film and what modern updates Spike Lee has made to retell and possibly improve the edge of your seat thriller, discuss the themes of class disparity, and all together praise the shining star in every Spike Lee Joint, the city of New York.

Love, Brooklyn movie review

LOVE, BROOKLYN MOVIE REVIEW

Everybody loves a fluff piece, and why not? In these trying times, feeling good is a hallmark of being human and keeping the hope alive. What borough of a city is more of an example of hope and prosperity than Brooklyn?. I know what you’re thinking: a lot of parts of other cities, but this ain’t about that. Steven Soderbergh presents a film directed by Rachael Holder and written by Paul Zimmerman about a love letter to friendships, lovers, old flames, and new beginnings, Love, Brooklyn. Roger (André Holland) is a writer with an approaching deadline. He can submit a beautiful characterization of New York with all the words that strike the right mood but he’s not interested in any of that. He wants to proclaim something that’s true. As if that wasn’t enough stress, Roger is also seeing a single mother named Nicole (DeWanda Wise) who digs making love but isn’t interested in anything serious. Nicole’s primary focus is on raising her daughter and learning how to love again. Roger’s old flame Casey (Nicole Beharie) is also in his life as well, reminding him of what they had and if there is anything left for them to have in the future beyond a casual friendship. Your critics Bradly, Lewayne, and newcomer Eoin discuss NYC, the modern struggles of dating, what to do with the emotions provoked by a beautiful film that’s more vibes than plot, and confirm which one of the trio has actually been to New York. The answer may surprise and amaze you!

Eoin Daly

Born and raised in Dublin Ireland, Eoin currently lives in London and has been an avid film lover from as far back as they can remember. Eoin enjoys going to the cinema weekly regardless of the film: new, old, or the most random title. They have no preconceived notions when taking in a new film. They tend to look for the good in any film they watch and will always love the art form. They are a major fan of actress-led cinema and will never apologize for this one film bias.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

The Threesome movie review

THE THREESOME MOVIE REVIEW

Have you ever had a crush on someone for so long that you’d be willing to do anything just to hook up with them intimately? Even agree to a third person being invited to the bedroom? Director Chad Hartigan and writer Ethan Ogilby answer this question with a sexy cast in The Threesome. After giving a romantic toast at his best friends’ wedding, Connor Blake (Jonah Hauer-King) is all hopped up on destiny and once again pines after his crush and often casual lover Olivia Capitano (Zoey Deutch). Expressing his love to her at the cafe in which she waitresses, he once again is given the cold shoulder and a reality check signed “Take the Hint”. He then finds himself flirting with Jenny Brooks (Ruby Cruz), a girl next door Christian who’s excited to live life to the fullest. When Olivia sees Connor finally seeming to move on, she springs into action and suggests the three have a fun night on the town. After clubbing, drinking, and some drugs, they go back to Connor’s place to really chill and feel the vibes of the moment. And, given the title, you can guess what comes next. But after the excitement, comes the post ménage à trois complications of feelings and other biological considerations. Our critics Bradly, Chris, and Felix pair up and get intimate with a rom-com that’s all shoulder and heart, and not so much naval and naughty. If you got a thing for clavicles though, watch out! The trio discuss the drama, the rom, and even the com in this cute and safe film about ambitious love.

DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 361: THE EPISODE WHERE WRIGHT FINALLY ADMITS HE NEEDS HELP (OR NOT)

Wright and Chris take on a…interesting stack of films. Some classics that are first-timers for Wright. Some films Chris loves but apparently no one else does, especially Wright. And some unbelievable crap. But crap is often the most fun to talk about. Especially when Wright is in his cups. Not necessarily when he’s in ALL the cups, like towards the end of this episode, but ya know.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar and theater management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).

Twinless movie review

TWINLESS MOVIE REVIEW

It’s hard to imagine as a non-twin what it would be like to have a twin sibling and then to lose them, especially unexpectedly. For Roman (Dylan O’Brien) it’s shattering. While his brother Rocky couldn’t be more different than him, they still had an indescribable bond. Roman is a heterosexual introvert. Rocky was a homosexual extrovert. And everywhere that Roman goes, people either mistake him for his brother, or break down telling him how great Rocky was. While attending a support group for twinless twins, Roman meets Dennis (James Sweeney) and they strike up a friendship. Despite the sizable differences between these two, a brother-like bond starts to form. But Dennis has a few terrible secrets and he is beginning to realize that he may have made a huge mistake. Chris, Wright, Marco, (and introducing) Neal all were deeply impressed with Twinless, giving kudos to the performances, the very tight and surprisingly funny script, and most unexpectedly, the inventive and conceptual cinematography. Give their review a listen.

Highly Suspect Reviews: The Long Walk

The Long Walk movie review

THE LONG WALK MOVIE REVIEW

Based on the first novel Stephen King ever wrote, although not the first published (later released under the pseudonym Richard Bachman) The Long Walk has had many attempts to bring it to the screen. But it’s a challenge: The Long Walk is a conversation film interrupted by occasional brutal killings. In a dystopia seemingly near you (but set in the past) a lotto for young people is held every year for those who want to participate. It’s a marathon with no end where to fall below 3 miles an hour is to be shot and killed by the always watching military. The walk only ends when only one survivor is left and that person wins enough cash to never have to worry about anything again and is granted one wish for anything they could possibly want. As the walk progresses, friendships and enemies are made, loyalties are tested, and lots of people get their heads spectacularly blown off. While this sort of affair could easily have been tedious, Wright, Chris, Rod, and Rhett found it captivating thanks to a smart and compelling dialogue-heavy script and some good performances (especially from David Jonsson who we predict big things for after this). Check out their review.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Deliberations of Doom)

Wright Sulek (The Other Boss, Trash in the Can, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, One Man’s Trash, Screener Squad)

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox. As of 2024, Wright has now been inducted into the Austin Film Critics Association as well as co-owns the One of Us network with Chris Cox.

Rod Nunley

An Austin native born military brat, Rod Nunley picked up his first comic book in Holland while waiting for his father to get out of work and was thrust into a world of nerdom. Now a full time single father he spends his days educating his son in the ways of being a geek with great bombast. Teaching his young pasawan the ways of D&D, sci-fi, fantasy books and all the great nerd films and content rivers he himself swam in his whole life. A karaoke singing, photo shoot taking, apartment locating and every doggo/kitty petting fan of all of all things geeky.

Screener Squad: The Toxic Avenger

The Toxic Avenger movie review

THE TOXIC AVENGER MOVIE REVIEW

The janitor becomes the hero, the mop becomes the weapon, and the toxic sludge becomes… well, a makeover. The Toxic Avenger returns in a reimagined reboot of the cult classic, telling the story of Winston (Peter Dinklage), an everyman who finds himself transformed into a grotesque but oddly noble vigilante after a run-in with industrial waste. Armed with freakish strength and a warped sense of justice, he takes aim at corruption in the filthiest corners of the city, but, ya know, in the grossest, gooiest, slimiest, campiest way possible. But how does this new take on the legendary trash-to-hero tale pile up against the OGs? Kate, Mike, and T.C. gather in the One Of Us toxic sludge pool (not of OOU’s making, thank you very much, inane lack of government oversight, any real environmental regulations, and the ineptitude of Ted Cruz) to ooze their thoughts all over this culty good time.

T.C. De Witt (Screener Squad)

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. He has released two feature films, The Princess Knight and A Christmas Sunset. He thrives on collaboration and the thrill of sharing stories in all forms.

Kate Chambers (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Kate is a certified horror fiend and Horse Girl™. Her name isn’t short for anything. A native Austinite, she graduated with a BFA in Film Production from the University of Colorado Boulder then returned to the Lone Star State to make her home amid the cinephiles of the Alamo Drafthouse and the Austin Film Society. In her spare time, you can find her either down at the barn with her noble steed Jazz, watching as many movies as possible (often at work), cuddling with her pair of black cats and writing horror scripts, or nursing a beer in any available body of water… or doing Duolingo, where she’s currently on a 1000+ day streak.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is an award-winning creative jack of all trades, and is pretty competent with most of them. He is a writer, director, animator, video editor, and motion graphics artist. He has tried his hand at nearly every form of artistic expression at least once. He was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania where he fell in love with film, writing and special effects at an early age. His obsession with film would lead him to being locally known as a “human IMDb” and being on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He would study film in Pittsburgh before taking his talents to Austin. Not letting something like Tourettes get in his way, he has produced a handful of animated short films that have won awards from film festivals all over the globe. He has also written several yet-to-be-produced screenplays and TV pilots, with some of them being recognized in screenwriting competitions. He has even created motion graphics and animations for several clients, from movie theaters to Twitch streamers. When not creating or watching films, he enjoys MST3K, classic video games and buying vinyl records. He loves dogs, dropping obscure pop culture trivia and watching travel videos. He currently resides in Austin Texas and can be followed on the Instamagrams at @ohheyitsmikejm. His body of work can be found at his homepage or you can take a gander at his somewhat-impressive IMDb listing here.

HEART/FELT – IDEA MAN

On the premiere episode of Heart/Felt, we kick off our celebration of 70 years of The Muppets by diving into the early creative works of Jim Henson. I’m joined by Wright Sulek to explore Jim’s experimental films and how it paved the way for the beloved characters and stories that followed.

YOUR HOST

Eric Samaniego (Trash in the Can, Heart/Felt, One Man’s Trash, Highly Suspect Reviews)

Eric is a multi-award show watching, sometimes comedian, sometimes writer that began life as a Muppet and 1930’s screwball comedy obsessed goon and continues to carry a torch for all things felt and funny. With a passion for genre films, poor taste, and whiskey, he and co-conspirator, Wright Sulek, indulge in the best/worst films the world has to offer with One of Us’s podcast, ‘Trash in the Can’. When not podding, Eric works as an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797.
