Screener Squad: Forbidden Fruits

Forbidden Fruits movie review

FORBIDDEN FRUITS MOVIE REVIEW

The online discourse (in some disturbing corners) says you should pass on cinema made for and by women in the industry. That wouldn’t be very fetch of you, no cap. If you thought that was cringe, that’s because an adult wrote it after googling “Is Gen Z a thing, how does Gen Z talk?”. Though lost to the sands of time in many areas, the mall is still the scene in some cities. Whether it’s your first job or an after school hang, life begins after school next to that big fountain between the pretzel vendors and women’s apparel. The fruits, Apple (Lili Reinhart), Cherry (Victoria Pedretti), and Fig (Alexandra Shipp) have just welcomed a fourth member into their trendy retail store, Free Eden. Pumpkin (Lola Tung) rolls with the new crew with flawless grace but has a curiosity about her not necessarily present in the other three women. She asks a lot of questions about a lot of odd happenings at the mall. Is it FOMO or is she searching for puzzle pieces to complete a picture of her past that connects the Apple, Cherry, and Fig to a coven of witches? Or maybe the three ladies are just having fun and witchcraft is like a straight up legit hobby yo? Negativity is a cloud that steals the shine of other women and if you can uplift your fellow sisters, you raise yourself as well. Kate and Caroline put a stamp on the importance of representation in this film about female empowerment, the importance of rage as a form of expression, and the proper names for shops at the mall. Just how greatful should we be for their knowledge? Let’s just say what Bradly, the host reviewer, calls a women’s clothing store will shock you!

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and maybe even providing some comments of his own.

Kate Chambers (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Kate is a certified horror fiend and Horse Girl™. Her name isn’t short for anything. A native Austinite, she graduated with a BFA in Film Production from the University of Colorado Boulder then returned to the Lone Star State to make her home amid the cinephiles of the Alamo Drafthouse and the Austin Film Society. In her spare time, you can find her either down at the barn with her noble steed Jazz, watching as many movies as possible (often at work), cuddling with her pair of black cats and writing horror scripts, or nursing a beer in any available body of water… or doing Duolingo, where she’s currently on a 1000+ day streak.

Caroline Sulek

Caroline Sulek resides in Mckinney, TX with her son Henry and two cats: Sally and Rocky. As a mom, corporate baddie, and unabashed lover of all things silly, spooky, and creative, she brings a unique perspective to the One of Us network. Her love of art and movies started long ago when she and her brother, Wright, would spend entire summer vacations in front of the TV and she would draw portraits of Wright as he sat watching for hours. Caroline has been a frequent guest and fan favorite of the Trash in the Can podcast with her brother, Wright, and his life podcast partner, Eric Samaniego. Caroline enjoys the most gruesome of horror movies and the most bingeable of reality shows and anywhere in between!

Fantasy Life movie review

FANTASY LIFE MOVIE REVIEW

Are you a fan of Noah Baumbach movies? Maybe some classic Woody Allen New York Jewish anxiety films? How about a quiet walking and talking film? Well, Fantasy Life might be right up your alley. This feature directorial debut from Matthew Shear takes us on a sun-soaked stroll through the Big Apple and Martha’s Vineyard. It’s an introspective dramedy about ambition, identity, and the stories people tell themselves to get through the day. The film follows a young man who has just lost his finance job and suffered a massive anxiety attack. He stumbles into a job as a nanny for a once impressive now faded actress (Amanda Peet) and her bass player husband (Alessandro Nivola). Melina, Drew, and T.C. relax on the One Of Us New England beachfront property to discuss the naturalistic performances, overlapping dialogue, and that familiar feeling of being caught between who you are and who you thought you’d be.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Highly Suspect Reviews: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie review

THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE REVIEW

Well, I guess we can no longer say that video game movie adaptations aren’t profitable because there have been more than a few of late, notably The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023. Now, it’s inevitable sequel is here with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) work out of the Mushroom Kingdom now, and on a call where the movie begins (and presumably a call-back to a game in the long-running Mario series I was unfamiliar with, much like MOST of this movie) they discover their new friend Yoshi the dinosaur (Donald Glover). Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) goes out into the distant galaxy with Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) to answer a call from her previously unknown sister Rosalina (Brie Larson) who has been kidnapped by the son of Bowser (Benny Safdie) to power a Bowser Death Star superweapon. Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi must follow and help Peach to rescue her sister, while being reluctantly helped by a tiny Bowser (Jack Black). The Super Mario films are essentially big ads for the games full of the requisite “I recognize that!” dopamine hit deliveries, but the first one was still certainly better than expected. Can the Mario Galaxy continue this success story that we are just going to have to be a bit cyncial about because we are old and jaded? Listen to Methuselah Chris along with Wright, Rhett, and Ben to find out.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Deliberations of Doom)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar and theater management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).

Wright Sulek (The Other Boss, Trash in the Can, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, One Man’s Trash, Screener Squad)

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox. As of 2024, Wright has now been inducted into the Austin Film Critics Association as well as co-owns the One of Us network with Chris Cox.

Ben Glasthal (Highly Suspect Review, Screener Squad, Breakfast Pub, Unstabletop Gamers, Video and Audio Editor)

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. For the rest of his free time, he can be found biking, drinking craft beer, being an amateur photographer, and playing video games by himself or on Twitch. He’s best found on Instagram or Twitter as @MovieReelBen.

Rhett O’Hara

Rhett O’Hara has really been looking forward to writing this “about me”. He blames movies for a lot of things in his life. He blames seeing Batman Returns as a child for his interest in all things goth and camp. He blames seeing Akira at far too young of an age for his interest in films that dare to venture into the weirder side of things. He blames Midsommar for never visiting Sweden. Rhett has lived in Austin for a couple of decades, so he can speak fondly of the old days of renting DVDs from I Luv Video (Tetsuo the Iron Man left a mark) and buying peculiar documentaries (The Nomi Song, Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist) from Waterloo Video. Rhett also remembers reading an “about me” that stuck with him a few years back. Time continued and he felt a constant need to share “about me” as well. It wasn’t a voice telling him to do this but something akin to the feeling of knowing that someone is watching you without ever actually seeing that person. Rhett has been anxious and is only just now feeling a sense of relief writing this. He feels selfish though, knowing that this will continue on to the next host; the desire…. the urge…. no….the need to pass along a message that has existed ever since humanity started sharing thoughts in a written form. You must understand that he had no choice in this matter. Rhett is truly sorry for this, but he’s every bit of a pawn as you are now. Rhett is also contractually obligated to let you know that he has been a guest on the hit podcast Trash in the Can.

Screener Squad: The Serpent’s Skin

The Serpent's Skin movie review

THE SERPENT’S SKIN MOVIE REVIEW

Since the dawn of time, snakes have been given a terrible rep. Sketchy marketing practice? Snake oil salesmen. Surprised by bad news? Snake in the grass! Really good at lying? Forked tongue, like a snake! Poor reptiles have suffered the slander for years but with that bad boy reputation also comes the eyes of artists using the imagery of the serpent and all its baggage in a bad ass tattoo. The Serpent’s Skin features a woman named Anna (Alexandra McVicker) shedding the transphobic skin of her home life and getting a job in the city while crashing with her sister Dakota (Charlotte Chimes). With a new life comes new opportunities to be your true self and maybe find some true love. Gen (Avalon Fast), a tattoo artist, takes a liking to Anna and they become fast friends and lovers. In the midst of a crime wave against women at the club, can their budding romance survive a superstitious, spooky, creepy, vampiric-like murderer? Bradly and Lewayne, two cis hetero white males, team up to do their best on deciphering the mystery of The Serpent’s Skin.

HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY: EP 6 – COLUMBO: IT’S ALL IN THE GAME/DRUNKS/THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (1999)

Up next on Hollywood Royalty, we flashback a bit to see Faye in throwback mode, with the actress taking on three 90s titles that feel as if they came straight from her new Hollywood era. We begin with the 1993 TV movie Columbo: It’s All in the Game, where Faye plays a deadly, glamorous Beverly Hills socialite who uses charms to throw Peter Falk’s detective off her scent. After that, we examine the acclaimed 1995 arthouse drama Drunks, where Faye, along with an assortment of other notable actors, portrays a collection of people struggling with various addictions. Finally, we revisit the starry big-screen 1999 remake of Faye’s 1968 hit The Thomas Crown Affair to watch the actress have a ball in a rather delicious supporting turn as the title character’s psychiatrist. Fellow One of Us contributor and critic over at The Movie Buff, Nathan Flynn, joins me as we enjoy the new Hollywood roots of these 90s films.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan?, Hollywood Royalty)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 372: MY GOD, IT’S FULL OF TANGENTS

Chris and John seem distracted this week. It’s not because we don’t have some interesting films to discuss, like one of the most popular adaptations of the Arthurian saga of all time, two love it or hate it horror films from 2025, and one of the cult classics of sci-fi weirdness that probably isn’t on your radar. It’s just that they really wanted to talk about, well, Yakuza: Infinite Wealth, Starfleet Academy, and other stuff a bit more. So, expect a few more and longer tangents than usual this week but we still always get back on topic. More or less.

All titles were sent to Digital Noise by the distribution companies in question for the purpose of review. No other compensation was involved. The opinions here are our own.

PLEASE USE OUR IMAGE LINKS TO BUY ANY OF THESE TITLES ON AMAZON. IN FACT, PLEASE USE THEM AS YOUR STARTING POINT FOR ANYTHING YOU BUY OFF OF AMAZON. WE ARE AN AFFILIATE AND RECEIVE COMPENSATION FOR PURCHASES MADE FROM OUR LINKS.

Infestation: SXSW 2026 – They Will Kill You

They Will Kill You movie review

THEY WILL KILL YOU MOVIE REVIEW

Russian writer/director Kirill Sokolov (Why Don’t You Just Die!) is continuing on with his actiony weirdness wearing its influences on its sleeve with They Will Kill You. Zazie Beetz plays Asia Reeves, a woman who ten years ago was on the run with her little sister trying to protect them from their abusive father. Unfortunately, that mission failed and dad got the younger daughter back and Asia went to jail. Freshly released, she is determined to track down what happened to her sister (Myha’la). Her trail leads her to a mysterious hotel run by Lilith Woodhouse (Patricia Arquette) and her husband (Paterson Joseph). She applies for a housekeeper job at the strange building and is led to her room for the night, but it’s barely started when a bunch of hooded figures break in to try to abduct her for reasons unknown. What those hooded figures don’t know is that Asia learned one helluva lot about asskicking while in prison and that they are cultin’ with the wrong lady. Filled with enormous amounts of very over the top and intentionally silly bloodshed and supernatural goings-on, They Will Kill You is going to delight some, but some will find its search for film immortality to be (metaphorically) bloodless. Chris, Wright, and Nathan come to the table to disagree on this one.

Christopher Ayres (Screener Squad)

Born and raised in the suburbs of Hinsdale, Illinois, Chris Ayres would constantly watch movies as a child, and that obsession has only grown over time, even attending Columbia Film School in Chicago during his last couple years of college. Whenever he’s not working his exhausting day job, he’s either watching as many movies as he can squeeze into his free time (preferably movies he’s never seen before due to a never-ending desire to expand his knowledge of the art form), or trying to turn people on to movies they haven’t seen that he thinks are worth their attention. You can find him on Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram and Letterboxd (look for AyresForce or AyresForceOne)

R.Felix Finch (Screener Squad)

A native of Sacramento, California, and having spent his post-pubescent years in Virginia, Nevada, Texas, and New York, Felix now finds himself pursuing his Juris Doctor at Emory University School of Law in Atlanta, Georgia. Nothing is more calming to Felix than the comfort of Chaos, as his time in professional wrestling and on other podcasts has demonstrated, and Felix brings a love for the most absurd outings in the realms of cinema, finding his escape in things such as the overly complex world of Jupiter Ascending and perusing the unbelievably low-budget offerings of Tubi, which Felix is fully convinced is a Psi-Op. In addition to finding Felix here on OneOfUs.net, you can Check him out on TikTokInstagram, and YouTube sharing his life in Law School as “TheBrokeLawStudent.”

Screener Squad: The Gray House

The Gray House series review

THE GRAY HOUSE SERIES REVIEW

Sam Houston once said “Let me tell you what is coming. After the sacrifice of countless millions of treasure and hundreds of thousands of lives you may win Southern independence, but I doubt it. The North is determined to preserve this Union. They are not fiery, impulsive people as you are, for they live in colder climates. But when they begin to move in a given direction, they move with the steady momentum and perseverance of a mighty avalanche”. Amazon Video presents an eight episode miniseries about the on-goings during the 1860 Civil War period, The Gray House. Eliza Van Lew (Mary-Louise Parker) is the matriarch of the Van Lew women and the leader of a gathering of spies for the underground railroad in Richmond Virginia. Her daughter Elizabeth Van Lew (Daisy Head) is headstrong and determined to stop the civil war and abolish slavery. Mary Jane Richards (Amethyst Davis) is a slave acting as a spy on behalf of the Van Lews, serving the Jefferson Davis house to gather information to use against the Confederacy. Also there’s the ladies of the brothel led by Clara Parish (Hannah James) who gets the soldier boys talking through enticing their carnal desires. The lives of these women and the dangers they endured for the war effort against the Confederacy has echoes into eternity. Bradly and Drew Shaw discuss the plot and cloak and dagger presentation, and take a seat in Mindy’s classroom who is here to shoot down and lift up all the historical accuracies of The Gray House. Mindy’s well composed melody of truth inspired the opening quote of this very review.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad Boss, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. Drew Shaw

As the son of a Coast Guard pilot, Drew has lived everywhere in the US that has a coast that needs guarding. All his childhood travels eventually landed him in Northern Virginia where he works at a brewery by day and watches movies with all the other free time life has to offer him. Drew’s fiance and cats are tired of him ranting and raving about whatever his latest movie obsession is so he is taking to the air waves to make it everybody else’s problem. On the off chance Drew isn’t watching a movie, he likes spending his time reading comics and literature, gaming, and playing around with all his various music making gadgets.

Mindy Rast-Keenan (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. They still give her money for being on HBO that one time, with her name in the credits spelled wrong. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. In the few seconds she gets to herself, Mindy bakes for charity, knits eccentric plushies, plays original RPG’s with her gamemaster husband, and spends time with her soulmate, Batman.

Infestation: SXSW 2026 – Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice

Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice SXSW review

MIKE & NICK & NICK & ALICE MOVIE REVIEW

Writer director BenDavid Grabinski steps into the spotlight with the soft sci-fi crime caper Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice. Not to be confused with the 1969 rom-dram Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, Grabinski’s film takes place over the course of one tumultuous night where past mistakes have a slim to none chance of being rectified thanks to a bevy of bullets and a way too easy-to-use time machine. A double dose of Vince Vaughn isn’t as insufferable as it may seem for some non-fans out there, largely due to pairing Vaughn with James Marsden’s affable take on the reluctant hitman trope and an electric Eiza González who seems to be channeling her star turn as Darling in Baby Driver. Straight out of its SXSW premiere, check out what Nathan & Drew & Drew & Martin have to say about cannibal assassins, navigating the criminal underworld, and the perils of unsupervised time travel.

Martin Thomas (Highly Suspect Reviews, The Original Gentlemen)

In addition to having been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet, a pawn and a king…Martin Thomas has also been a professional comic book artist (Marvel, DC, First Comics, etc.), a TV personality (The Reel Deal), and a cartoon character (“Leon” from Spill.com). Currently, he can be found podcasting up a storm at DoubleToasted.com when he’s not one of “The Original Gentlemen.”

Nathan Flynn (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

Nathan Flynn is the resident goofball of OneofUs.Net, often found overly caffeinated, slightly stoned, and ready to unleash the hottest takes imaginable. As the resident Letterboxd Lunatic, his movie opinions are as bold as his love for Top Gun: Maverick — a film he considers less of a movie and more of a religion. When he’s not passionately defending his latest cinematic obsession, Nathan manages a comedy club in downtown Austin, where he’s somehow avoided being heckled… so far. Around here, he’s usually the punching bag, but hey, someone’s gotta do it.

Drew Tinnin (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Deliberations of Doom)

Drew Tinnin is a Rondo Award nominated interviewer and critic who has worked at SiriusXM’s Fangoria Radio and Fangoria magazine in NYC, as well as the London-based Dazed Digital. Currently a regular contributor to the Dread Central Network, he’s excited to join up with some old friends and other film fans on One of Us as a new contributor to Screener Squad.
