DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 352: HIDDEN GEMS

Chris and Wright get a stack packed with some real winners: some older all-timers that are new to one or both of them, some acknowledged classics with fantastic 4k upgrades, and at least one that has been a bucket-list item for them for a very long time and more than lives up to its reputation. Oh, and for some reason, RFK Jr. guest stars on this week’s show. Sorry.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. PADDINGTON IN PERU MOVIE REVIEW

If you’re slow to catch this train, Paddington 1 and 2 rank among the best children’s films ever made. If even Pedro Pascal and Nic Cage cry together about how wonderful they are, you can give them a shot. So, when the most adorable bear ever returns for a third film, we here at One Of Us aren’t afraid to admit that we were very excited to see him come back. Paddington in Peru follows the seemingly growth-stunted bear and his adoptive family, the Browns, as they travel to Peru together to visit his Aunt Lucy. Lucy lives in the jungle in a Home for Retired Bears run by a gaggle of nuns led by the outrageously happy, Reverend Mother Clarissa (Olivia Colman). When the Browns arrive, Clarissa informs them that Lucy disappeared in the night to places unknown in the jungle. Paddington discovers in her room a map to an ancient standing stones ruin in the jungle and so, off they go. With the help of a riverboat captain (Antonio Banderas) and his daughter (Carla Tous), the dangerous journey begins that will take them to places that a proper English family is notably unsuited for, and it might just lead to the fabled City of Gold, El Dorado. Chris, Wright, Ben, and Marco get a little lost in the jungle on this one, but still think it’s an enjoyable romp in the probably never-ending IP of Paddington.

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD MOVIE REVIEW

Here we are at the 35th film in the MCU and the 4th Captain America film, albeit with a notable change. Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) once a partner to Steve Rogers, was chosen by him specifically to take on the mantle of Captain America, after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Sam questioned his worth, notably in the Disney Plus series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and again, here to some extent, but there seemed little doubt that super-soldier serum or not, Sam was the right choice to take up the mantle. It’s too bad Disney/Marvel doesn’t seem to think so, at least judging by the half-assedness of this film. After stopping the Serpent Society from selling a mystery item to a buyer who mysteriously chose to never show up, all sorts of things keep not adding up. Sam and his new Falcon, Joaquin Torres, are on the trail after a seeming attack on newly appointed President “Thunderbolt” Ross (Harrison Ford, stepping in for William Hurt). His would-be assassins appear confused and don’t remember what happened, one of them being their old friend and original Captain America, Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly). Clearly, shenanigans of the Manchurian Candidate sort are afoot and with even the President’s actions suspect, it’s up to these two heroes to save the day. But who will save the audience from this terrible script? Chris, Marco, Frank, and Wright have chosen to accept this assignment.

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. LOVE HURTS MOVIE REVIEW

It was so great to see the return of actor Ke Huy Quan in the sublime Everything Everywhere All At Once in 2022. Having retired from acting for a very long time, Quan is known to Americans for his roles as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Data in The Goonies. I swear I teared up watching interviews with him after the success of EEAAO, seeing how grateful he was for a chance to return and all the goodwill directed at him. And honestly…he deserves much better than Love Hurts. I know, I know, you want to believe this is good. So did we. But here we are. The movie follows Quan as Marvin, a popular and well-loved real estate agent. He even gets an award from his boss and mentor Cliff (a nice Goonies call-back with Sean Astin in the role). But his very different past comes back to haunt him. He used to be an assassin for a crime organization run by his brother (Daniel Wu) and he was the deadliest of killers. Unfortunately, the event that caused him to quit the life, a decision to spare the life of another (Ariana DeBose), has blown up his new existence when his brother discovers that the person he was supposed to kill is still alive. The movie had Quan escaping and beating the tar out of a parade of other killers as he tries to keep it all from destroying his new life, and protecting the stubborn woman whose life he spared while not being able to admit that he loves her. Chris, Wright, Kate, and Marco had high hopes, as did we all, but Love Hurts, hurts. And not in the good way.

A native Austinite, she graduated with a BFA in Film Production from the University of Colorado Boulder then returned to the Lone Star State to make her home amid the cinephiles of the Alamo Drafthouse and the Austin Film Society. STAR WARS: SKELETON CREW SERIES REVIEW

The One Of Us Jedi Counsel of Melina, Marco, and T.C. gather to discuss the newest entry into the Star Wars franchise and are gleefully pleased to see that building an entire series around the Amblin Entertainment model that gave us The Goonies, E.T., and the entire kids on (speeder) bikes subgenre can in fact inject some new and wonderful life into the galaxy far, far away. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew follows Wim, Fern, Neel, and KB: four kids from the hidden planet of At Attin who, after discovering an abandoned spaceship, find themselves lost in the vast and perilous galaxy. Guided by the enigmatic (and quite possibly fallen Jedi) Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law), they encounter the most piratey of pirates in the stars, strange aliens, and dangerous places in their quest to return home. The series, set in the same post-Empire era as The Mandalorian, is a coming-of-age adventure that will satisfy fans of the Orig Trig, newcomers to the franchise, and perhaps even cynical long-time fans just hate watching every offering. Also, if you love Treasure Planet, this one’s for you.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

BACK IN ACTION MOVIE REVIEW

Homer Simpson once said “Well, guess what, cool people! Parents are supposed to be lame. That’s so their kids have something to rebel against and be cool long enough to get married and have kids for whom they are lame. It’s nature’s way.” Netflix presents the espionage action comedy Back in Action featuring Jamie Foxx and the return of comedy bombshell and Charlie’s Angel, Cameron Diaz. Matt (Foxx) and Emily (Diaz) are the proud parents of two teens named Alice (McKenna Roberts) and Leo (Rylan Jackson). Matt and Emily have dull family movie nights in between routine PTA meetings and very boring lectures about preparing for your future and cringe dad jokes. When their former friend and employer Chuck (Kyle Chandler) pays them an unexpected visit, Alice and Leo discover that their dork-ass parents are actually Bond-level super spies. Bradly, Frank, and Jena gather the intel on Diaz’s decade-long disappearance and determine if her long awaited return is worth the straight to streaming tag. Also, they pin straight-to-streaming spy scripts against one another while having a laugh celebrating the long lasting cameo phase of Glenn Close’s career. Gather your spy gadgets and tuxedo up with the one of us review of Back in Action.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. HEART EYES MOVIE REVIEW

In continuing the ever-meta-ning of the horror-comedy genre, as we go deeper into the rabbit-hole of self-referentialism and winking at the audience, some of the entries have become absurdly lazy. Fortunately, one of the brightest lights in the field, Christopher Landon, is one of the writers of Heart Eyes and if you’ve seen his previous films (Freaky, Happy Death Day(s)) then it should be an incentive to give this new film a chance, as his fingerprints are all over it. Directed by another one-to-watch Josh Ruben (Werewolves Within), this rom-com that happens to have a slasher movie chasing it around, hits most of the right notes. Ally (Olivia Holt) works for an advertising agency and she’s in trouble as her latest campaign surrounding doomed lovers isn’t playing well due to the yearly antics of the Heart Eyes killer. The masked murderer only kills happy couples and has been amping up each year, killing more and more in a different city each time. Now that they’ve come to Ally’s home town of Seattle, her job might be in trouble. She is teamed up with advertising wunderkind Jay (Mason Gooding) who is problem for her because A: she’s actually super-cynical about romance and that makes her job pretty hard for her and B: Jay makes her weak at the knees. After a ‘making the ex-boyfriend jealous’ impromptu kiss is seen by Heart Eyes, the not-a-couple is targeted by the killer. Even as they run while trying to protest they’re not a thing, it’s clear they’re starting to fall for each other. Chris, Ben, Marco, and Wright tear into this fun and insanely gorey romp and declare it this year’s February surprise.
