PRESENCE MOVIE REVIEW

Certainly writer David Koepp seems like a safe bet for a haunted house film (if you’ve never seen it, Stir of Echoes is great) but Steven Soderbergh as director? As one of our critics put it, “He just wanted to shoot an entire movie like his buddy Spike Jonze shot Beastie Boys videos”. The story follows a family who’ve just moved into a beautiful and old home. The point of view is entirely from the ‘presence’ which lives in the house, following the characters around, and occasionally interacting with the environment. At first, the ghostly nature is subtle and only the daughter of the family seems to note that anything is weird. But soon, there’s no denying it. What does it want? Why does it seem so protective of the daughter? Who or what is it? These are the central questions of Presence, a surprisingly by the book (mostly) ghost film only subverted by Soderbergh’s use of a fish-eye point of view of the spectre. Chris, Marco, Wright, and Kate strap on the proton packs and try to capture the spirit of this new film.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox. As of 2024, Wright has now been inducted into the Austin Film Critics Association as well as co-owns the One of Us network with Chris Cox.

WALLACE & GROMIT: VENGEANCE MOST FOWL MOVIE REVIEW

From Aardman studios and presented by Netflix, the stop motion sensation from across the pond is back in Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl. The feature length film is a sequel to the original classic Wallace and Gromit adventure The Wrong Trousers. A diamond thief penguin named Feathers McGraw was thwarted by Wallace and Gromit from commiting the biggest blue diamond heist in history and is sentenced to solitary confinement behind bars, also known as the zoo. Feathers McGraw thinks only of revenge on the inventor Wallace (Ben Whitehead) and his expressive canine pal Gromit. While Feathers does pull-ups and squats at the zoo, Wallace has invented a little robotic helper in the guise of a gnome called Norbot (Reece Shearsmith). Norbot can tidy up the living room, trim and prune the trees and hedges in the garden, and with a helpful attitude, enable humanity to be a little bit more lazy. Feathers seeks to use this trending invention to frame Wallace and complete his vengeful plans. It will be up to Gromit to expose the psychotic penguin’s plot and save his best friend Wallace from legal consequences. Bradly, Mike, and Kate discuss their long history with being entertained and charmed by Aardman studios, discuss their understanding of British terms and practices, and take a deep dive into the love and care that Wallace and Gromit have brought through the decades with their awe inspiring stop motion animation and cozy comfort charm.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). DUNE PROPHECY SERIES REVIEW

In 2021 a charismatic film maker named Denis Villeneuve began his quest in the box office, left dry and deserted by the ravages of the pandemic. By 2024, WB studios beared witness, as he rode the mighty sandworm of financial success. The studio that brought about the recently successful film spin-off The Penguin continued to taste the waters of the monetary crossover universe by releasing Dune Prophecy on Max. Showrunners Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker present a prequel to the Dune films, set 10,000 years in the past when the first war with the machines led to the rise of house Atreides’ glory and house Harkonnen’s descent into shame. Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) recalls her time as a young girl (played by Jessica Barden) and what led her down an ambitious path to wage war upon house Atreides. Along with her sister Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams) we see what plans they have wrought over the course of decades to bring about the fall of Imperium Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong). A wedding to the Emperor’s daughter Princess Ynez Corrino (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) is set to bond houses and create opportunities and hopefully peace for generations to come. However, a murder through the power of some kind of ancient witchcraft tears the pairing asunder. Only a large ensemble of character actors can unearth the truth, shrouded in cloaks and daggers, and reveal the hands of a puppet master pulling the strings with eyes that can see across generations of time. If that sounds a bit convoluted, Bradly, Lewayne, and Ryan are here to explain the simpler details of the plot before our dear viewers are swallowed up by a shai-hulud sized worm worth of Dune lore. Those however familiar with this universe and its epic machinations may not need the review, but will enjoy a laugh with the One Of Us crew reviewing Dune Prophecy Season 1.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Ryan Aleck Hill (Screener Squad, Video and Audio editor)

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. WOLF MAN MOVIE REVIEW

The early excitement over the new Wolf Man movie had less to do with there being a new reboot of the Universal classic monster, The Wolf Man, and more with the writer/director Leigh Whannell. As a writer he created the Saw and Insidious franchises with James Wan. As a director, he took the steam out of the first Venom film’s release by making a somewhat similar but MUCH better film with 2018’s Upgrade. Most importantly, in 2020, he took his first stab at a Universal movie monster reboot with his highly lauded The Invisible Man. So Leigh taking on another classic monster was highly anticipated. And maybe that’s why Wolf Man seemed like such a let down to Chris, Wright, Alan, and Marco because expectations were high. This version follows Blake (Christopher Abbott) and his wife Charlotte (Julia Garner) as they take a trip with their daughter to the mountains of Oregon. Blake’s father, long missing, has been declared deceased, and he talks his family into going with him up to the old homestead to pack up some things, largely out of an attempt to heal a growing rift between him and his wife. They’re not even there yet when a titular creature jumps in front of their U-haul, causing it to spectacularly crash. A narrow escape still leaves Blake wounded by the wolf dude and they manage to get to Blake’s old house and seal themselves in against it. But Blake’s not looking so good and, well, you can guess how this is gonna go. In fact your reviewers pretty much out-guessed Wolf Man every step of the way, while still giving Whannell some points for some of his creative transformation ideas. Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox. As of 2024, Wright has now been inducted into the Austin Film Critics Association as well as co-owns the One of Us network with Chris Cox.

Ben Glasthal (Highly Suspect Review, Screener Squad, Breakfast Pub, Unstabletop Gamers, Video and Audio Editor)

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. For the rest of his free time, he can be found biking, drinking craft beer, being an amateur photographer, and playing video games by himself or on Twitch. Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Jason Fisher (Screener Squad)

Born in New Orleans, brought up in Austin, and raised by cinema, Jason is an animator and filmmaker with decades of experience working in the arts. Before even graduating high school, Jason was animating and podcasting with the Austin-based movie review site Spill.com. From this formative experience, he gained an eclectic taste and knowledge that he carried into a rich career working in the animation industry. Notable projects include Marvel’s Hit Monkey, FXX’s Legion, Netflix’s America: The Motion Picture, and working for companies including Nickelodeon, Rooster Teeth, PBS Kids, and many more. As a cineast, it’s his belief that his favorite movie is one that he hasn’t seen yet. His thirst for great art is unquenchable, whether that means consuming it or contributing to it himself.

Marco Noyola (Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Audio Editor)

By day, Marco is a mild-mannered office worker, but by night he is a mild-mannered movie watcher. He does other mild-mannered stuff too.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). THE BEST FILMS OF 2024 PART ONE

This more accurately should be titled, the best films of 2024 that we haven’t already talked about (largely). Because we are not talking about Anora, The Brutalist, or The Substance here. We did those reviews. We’re primarily talking about the other greatest films that we didn’t get to put a review out for with the Austin crew. So listen to Chris, Wright, Ben, Frank, Jason, Marco, and Mike as they list some of the best stuff from 2024, some of which you might not even know about.
