Screener Squad: A Family Affair

A Family Affair Movie Review

A FAMILY AFFAIR MOVIE REVIEW

Zara Ford (Joey King) is a young ambitious producer who’s ready to take the Hollywood bull by the horns and change the industry forever! She’s got her Pulitzer prize winning mother’s (Nicole Kidman) blessing and bottomless funds, and a foot in the door by being Mr. Blockbuster mega star Chris Cole’s (Zac Efron) personal assistant. What she didn’t expect was for these two foundations of support to ever meet and start rocking the foundations of the couch, the sofa, the shower, and the upstairs guest bedroom! Woa Booooooooy! From director Richard LaGravenese and writer Carrie Solomon. Netflix presents the romantic comedy of the summer A Family Affair‘. Zara isn’t necessarily trying to ruin her mother’s second chance on love and saucy romance but she knows everything about Chris Cole. Could the self absorbed, shallow, impatient, and petty celebrity really have the beating heart of a romantic looking for long term love deep within his soul? Zara’s dear friend Eugenie (Liza Koshy) says it’s meddle or move out of the way while Zara’s grandmother Leila (Kathy Bates) has sage wisdom to offer. Bradly, Frank, and Melina discuss the mature handling of the decade age difference between lovers’ romance in comparison to the analytics of such a coupling 10 years ago, praise the cast for elevating such an obvious studio note riddled script, and salvage the wreckage of a zany hijinks rom-com colliding with a heartfelt finding love again drama.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and Eye on the prize and maybe even provide some comments of his own.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Joko Anwar's Nightmares and Daydreams Review

JOKO ANWAR’S NIGHTMARES AND DAYDREAMS SERIES REVIEW

Hey to all you Christmas in July folks! You can get out of here with your awful snow and frozen heart. We are getting into the spooky scarys in the 2024 summer brought to you by Netflix. Joko Anwar Presents Nightmares and Daydreams is an anthology of seven chilling tales that have an odd connection. The show takes place in Jakarta, Indonesia over the decades. “Old House” is a story of long lost youth and an old folks home run by a cloaked cult. “The Orphan” asks if you’d adopt bad luck for big cash prizes. “Poems and Pain” is coming at you from the keyboard as a writer discovers her words may be inspired by real life in a supernaturally haunting way. “Encounter” asks what would you do if you saw an angel and took a photo of it? “The Other Side” invites you to a theater where time seems to completely stand still while it marathons outside. “Hypnotized” features a reluctant hypnotist who uses his ability to steal money one time and it comes back to haunt him. The finale, “P.O. Box” ties it all together in a global conspiracy of good vs evil that has been going on since the dawn of time. Bradly, Jena, and Mindy light the campfire and compare the dreadful tension experienced in dreams and reality, the hardships of surviving a dubbed scary story, and agree on the timeless themes of how frightening it is to be poor.

Jena Perry. Aka Luna. Aka Dion. Aka Memori. Aka Dog whisperer. Aka whiskey connoisseur. As you can see, depending on when you met this Oakland, California native, you have experienced a completely different person, each time. After finally deciding on a 13+year career choice as a Videographer and Radio Personality, Jena balances her time between pursuing her Doctorate in Philosophy, providing insightful and funny critiques on films and Television, raising her daughter and dog in Ohio, and constantly fighting off the existential dread that is being a dope black woman in America in the 20th century.

Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. They still give her money for being on HBO that one time, with her name in the credits spelled wrong. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. In the few seconds she gets to herself, Mindy bakes for charity, knits eccentric plushies, plays original RPG’s with her gamemaster husband, and spends time with her soulmate, Batman.

Danny Dogget (Screener Squad)

Hey persons, it’s your favorite canine Dogget! As many of you know, I don’t identify as a critic as much as a classy shock jock. That being said, I do my best to give all of you a well-balanced review filled with my true opinions and hopefully a few laughs. You can occasionally find me on other persons podcast like Mission Impodible (that’ll be 10 dollars Nathan). For the most part, you can find me doing reviews on Oneofus.net.

Jason Fisher (Screener Squad)

Born in New Orleans, brought up in Austin, and raised by cinema, Jason is an animator and filmmaker with decades of experience working in the arts. Before even graduating high school, Jason was animating and podcasting with the Austin-based movie review site Spill.com. From this formative experience, he gained an eclectic taste and knowledge that he carried into a rich career working in the animation industry. Notable projects include Marvel’s Hit Monkey, FXX’s Legion, Netflix’s America: The Motion Picture, and working for companies including Nickelodeon, Rooster Teeth, PBS Kids, and many more. As a cineast, it’s his belief that his favorite movie is one that he hasn’t seen yet. His thirst for great art is unquenchable, whether that means consuming it or contributing to it himself.

Highly Suspect Reviews: Maxxxine

Maxxxine Movie Review

MAXXXINE MOVIE REVIEW

Even if you’re not a fan of the films, you’ve got to hand it to director/writer Ti West: no one has ever made a horror trilogy in the fashion that the X series is constructed. Each one distinctively different in style, and believe me, style is in charge here, but ultimately with the same core theme: people who will do anything for fame. And when I say people, I mean Mia Goth (both in her character of Pearl and Maxine). Maxxxine takes place after the ‘Texas Porn Massacre’ of X and Maxine has managed to stay unconnected to the tragedy while she works in porn in Los Angeles. But she has bigger ambitions in mind and when she gets her foot in the door acting in a sequel to a popular horror film, she is not gonna let anything mess it up. Certainly not the serial killer who seems to be taking out everyone in her orbit and branding them with pentagrams, or the two cops who are determined she must be connected, or the sleazy P.I. who tells her of his powerful client who will tell everyone about her involvement in Texas if she doesn’t come meet with them. Chris, Wright, Nathan, and Mike discuss Mia Goth’s weirdly uncooperative but still mesmerizing acting skills, Ti West’s need to reference absolutely everything, and wish that this trilogy ender (?) was much better than it is.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). You can also check out Chris in his videocast, along with Martin Thomas and Danni Danger, that One Of Us does with our friends at Bell of Lost Souls: Crossover Event. He also regularly guests on the video game website Rage Select. Follow Chris on Twitter and Facebook and check out his Amazon Wish List.

Nathan Flynn (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). He resides in Austin, Texas, and can be followed on the Instamagrams at @ohheyitsmikejm.

DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 342: THE ENDLESS PODCAST

Chris and Wright got a little carried away this week with having fun and turned in an epic-length show, but to be fair, there WERE a lot of titles to talk about. From a Russian/American hidden gem of a thriller from the 90s, to a bizarre Russian/Chinese hybrid action comedy. From the best known (and only?) con-trilogy, to the continuing adventures of a group of superheroes in crisis, we got lots. Check it out.

All titles were sent to Digital Noise by the distribution companies in question for the purpose of review. No other compensation was involved. The opinions here are our own.

Highly Suspect Reviews: Kinds of Kindness

Kinds of Kindness Movie Review

KINDS OF KINDNESS MOVIE REVIEW

Director/writer Yorgos Lanthimos definitely veered away from his usual fare with his recent and multi-award winning films The Favorite and Poor Things. But his latest, a triptych anthology Kinds of Kindness, returns to the dark absurdism of films like The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer. His cast plays different parts in each section that are unrelated in story (but perhaps in tone). The first is about a man who is deeply indebted to his employer who treats him preferentially with gifts and affection, until the man can’t bring himself to complete an extreme request by his employer and gets cut off. The second follows a police officer whose wife has gone missing at sea but when she returns, he is absolutely convinced that it’s not really her. The third is about two cult members who are sent out to look for a woman who has the ability to reanimate the dead with only a few clues to narrow the search. Lanthimos fills these with unexpected bizarre turns, extreme moments of sex and gore, and well, it is not for the casual fan. Which means out of Chris, Wright, Jason, and Ben, some of us LOVED it and some of us not so much. Listen to the review to find out who the haters and who the fanboys are.

Eric is a multi-award show watching, sometimes comedian, sometimes writer that began life as a Muppet and 1930’s screwball comedy obsessed goon and continues to carry a torch for all things felt and funny. With a passion for genre films, poor taste, and whiskey, he and co-conspirator, Wright Sulek, indulge in the best/worst films the world has to offer with One of Us’s podcast, ‘Trash in the Can’. When not podding, Eric works as an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797.

Screener Squad: The Great Lillian Hall

The Great Lillian Hall Movie Review

THE GREAT LILLIAN HALL MOVIE REVIEW

Broadway actress Lillian Hall is ready to go full showtime with Ivan Chekhov’s stage play “The Cherry Orchard” but a bad diagnosis from her doctor sets her up to have the standard biopic ‘long life lived’ reflections before the final curtain call. The Great Lillian Hall stars Jessica Lange as the acclaimed broadway actress Lillian Hall, who is struggling with her memory, and thus having difficulty remembering her lines. Her live-in assistant Edith Wilson (Kathy Bates) helps her juggle the memories of her past and the life she’ll be living as her condition rips up her existence like so many cherry trees cut down by the new owner of the orchard. Her daughter Margaret (Lily Rabe) is kept in the dark about her mother’s ailment as is director of her final performance David Flemming (Jesse Williams). But Lillian is ready as she’ll ever be to bring down the house before her sense of self and identity is brought down all around her. Bradly, Frank, and Melina discuss the great Jessica Lange and how a performance can elevate even the most standard of bio-pics, discuss illnesses in tv and film that takes away the identity of a person, how this film stacks up to other great performances, and discuss Chekov and all his smoking guns through time and history, be it on stage, tv or film.

Highly Suspect Reviews: A Quiet Place: Day One

A Quiet Place: Day One Movie Review

A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE MOVIE REVIEW

The nasty sound-sensitive alien monsters return, or rather, we see their arrival from a different viewpoint, in this new prequel to the A Quiet Place films, A Quiet Place: Day One. Whereas the first two films in the series are both co-written and directed by John Krasinski, here he takes a step back to a producer credit and ‘story by’ and hands the reins to director/co-writer Michael Sarnoski. Normally this would be worrying, but Sarnoski turned in the unexpectedly excellent Pig in 2021 so we gave him the benefit of the doubt. Turns out, that was (for most of us) the right call. This story takes place in NYC with Sam (Lupita Nyong’o) who is dying of ? and in hospice care, but is given a chance to go to the city for what is probably the last time to see a show and, more importantly, get a slice of real NYC pizza. Sadly, the Day One events start to happen and before you can say 9/11 reference, the city is in chaos as the monsters start tearing up anyone who utters a sound. While the residents try to make it to an evacuation point, Sam goes the opposite way, along with her cat (the true hero of the story). Along the way she meets up with a displaced English man, Eric (Joseph Quinn) and the two learn to trust each other on the perilous voyage into the heart of the city. Chris, Kim, Wright, and Frank take a look at A Quiet Place: Day One and aren’t exactly silent about their thoughts.

Photo on 2011-10-02 at 13.02Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

Screener Squad: Sweet Tooth Season 3

Sweet Tooth Season 3 review

SWEET TOOTH SEASON 3 REVIEW

It has been a long, long journey to get here but we have reached the end of our story. That story being the third and final season of Netflix’s adaptation of Jeff Lemire’s comic, Sweet Tooth. The final eight episodes sees Gus and his merry crew still on the search for his mother, Birdie, and hopefully some answers as to how The Sick came to be. All the while, the dangerously motivated Mrs. Zhang and her ravenous pack of hybrids and hunters want to find them and restore the way things were before by any means necessary. From Yellowstone to Canada to Alaska, our critics Mindy, Jen, and Jordan go along on the journey to get those answers too and share their thoughts on the season itself and the series as a whole. So sit down, get cozy, and let us tell you the story of Sweet Tooth.

” width=Mindy Rast-Keenan (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. For more of this eccentric nerd, you can follow her on Twitter here and read her original writings on Deepest Corners of My Notebook.
