Alienoid Movie Review

ALIENOID MOVIE REVIEW

Do you want a movie about a cyborg alien guard and his robot sidekick assigned to monitoring and capturing extraterrestrial prisoners hiding here on Earth inside human brains? How about one that takes place in the 14th and 21st centuries with characters able to cross time and space in a souped up, sentient sports utility Jeep that can double as a spaceship? How about one that has a baby girl rescued in the past and brought to the future and raised by the cyborg and robot but has grown a bit to witty and curious and has figured out her “Dads” might actually be from another planet? How about impressive Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Wire-Fu enhanced by expert hand-to-hand martial artist actors and PlayStation 4 CGI? Not enough yet? Okay! How about a movie that has competing bounty hunter wizards in the Korean Goryeo Dynasty who can bend air, pull swords from fans, mutate kittens into people, and use sci-fi tech to create forcefield prisons? Or maybe you want a movie about an alien invasion of a major city where tentacle creatures possess humans and a space hero has to CGI boss battle his evil counterpart while preventing a widespread gaseous explosion that may render all of Seoul helpless against the malevolent force? Or, ya know what? How about we put ALL of that into one movie? Yeah, that’s the ticket. And Tessa, Chad, Lewayne, and T.C. are here to review that actual film. But maybe, just maybe there’s a way to do an entire MCU Phase of plot in one film and succeed. Does Alienoid do that? The Squad is here to tell you.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. He has released two feature films, The Princess Knight and A Christmas Sunset. He thrives on collaboration and the thrill of sharing stories in all forms.

Chad Halvorsen (Screener Squad)

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. Chad is a frequent podcaster, most notably posing as a co-host for the podcast “The Film Illogical Society.”

Tessa Morrison (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Unstabletop Gamers)

Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. Wrote and contributed to website and magazine Strange Kids Club for five years reviewing films, video games, and Halloween candy. Co-hosted a Public Access show called Ladies of Fandom. Previously guested on podcasts Blood Over Texas, Threequel Club, Trash in the Can, Retro Movie Roundtable, and Nerds with Mics.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

A League of Their Own Series Review

A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN SERIES REVIEW

Hey ladies! It’s time to lace your cleats and grab your cleanest (totally not sexist) skirt; it’s WWII and Uncle Sam needs you to give these people of The United States, some entertainment. Our nation’s greatest game, Baseball, must be played and all our players were drafted into the War. It’s up to you brave women to catch, hit, and slide into our hearts. Never mind that women have to work 10x harder than men and if you’re a minority, it’s basically impossible. But luckily, we have a team that’s ready for the challenge. Rockford, IL very own: Rockford Peaches! Even though I’m pretty sure peaches don’t grow in the Midwest, we’re sticking with the name because it looks like a vulva. Anyways, A League of Their Own is not a retelling of the original, but more of a historical course correction. While the original dealt with some good themes, this new show picks up all the other pieces left on the floor. Queer issues, being a minority, or both, it’s all there to bare. Join Harmoni, Jordan, and Chad as they try to hit for the cycle with this review.

Samaritan Movie Review

SAMARITAN MOVIE REVIEW

Twin brothers, both born with strength beyond human ability, trying to simply live their lives in a world that sees them as freaks, and fears them as gods. Escaping a deliberate house fire that kills their parents, the boys find themselves on opposite sides, one compassionate towards humanity, and one consumed with hatred for its cruelty, forging a special hammer filled with his anger towards the world. The first becomes a hero, the second, his greatest villain. Two brothers waging a never ending battle, only stopping in a final showdown in an exploding power plant that neither walked out from. But with their disappearance, the rumors abound. Did they really die? Might our hero, in particular, still be out there? And could he be the grizzled loner living across the street from a youthful admirer determined to bring his hero back to deal with the crime infested city? No, this isn’t the beginning of The Dark Knight Rises. Or an X-men adaptation. Or Iron Man 3. Or another Thor-centric film. Or Man of Steel. Or…You know what? Let’s just move on. No, these are the circumstances that set up Amazon Prime’s latest superhero action film, Samaritan, based on the Mythos Comics graphic novels by Bragi F. Schut (who also wrote the screenplay), Marc Olivent, and Renzo Podesta. Our caped reviewers, Mindy, Rae, and Neil don their utility belts to try and discover if the film has what it takes to stand out in an MCU/superhero-saturated world. But will it all prove just a trope-y rehash of things we’ve seen before? Find out here, same Bat-Time, same Bat-Channel!

” width=Mindy Rast-Keenan (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. They still give her money for being on HBO that one time, with her name in the credits spelled wrong. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. In the few seconds she gets to herself, Mindy bakes for charity, knits eccentric plushies, plays original RPG’s with her gamemaster husband, and spends time with her soulmate, Batman.

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

Funny Pages Movie Review

FUNNY PAGES MOVIE REVIEW

Writer/Director Owen Kline brings the awkward dark and funny with his full length feature debut Funny Pages.  Daniel Zolghadri plays Robert, a high school cartoonist with the inspired style of Robert Crumb and the independent dreams of Bill Watterson.  After the tragic demise of a close inspirational friend.  Robert puts his pen where his paper is and dives head first into the struggling artist deep end. Working as an unpaid intern at the local comic shop by day and surfing the sofa of other artists down on their luck by night, Robert’s stuffy well-to-do parents do not approve of his beauty school drop-out plans and lack of  college aspirations.  After a chance meeting with alleged industry great Wallace (Matthew Maher) Robert is doing what he can to insert himself as a protege to Master Wallace but is everything as it seems or will reality be more like the crude and cruel humour of Robert’s funny pages?  Bradly, Tessa, Ryan, and Marcos storyboard the coming of age hijinks and have a laugh over industry nepotism.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and Eye on the prize and maybe even provide some comments of his own.

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. Highly Suspect Reviews: Three Thousand Years of Longing

Three Thousand Years of Longing Movie Review

THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING MOVIE REVIEW

In Director/Co-writer George Miller’s first film since 2015’s Max Max: Fury Road, he traverses a very different path with Three Thousand Years of Longing. Tilda Swinton plays Alithea, a narratologist (the study of narrative and narrative structure and the ways that these affect human perception) who is on a lecture tour in Istanbul. She purchases an odd glass container and lo and behold: it contains a Djinn. The initially hugely oversized Idris Elba appears in her hotel room and grants her three wishes. Now, Alithea is a student of tales and is all too familiar with how wishes, if not phrased exactly correctly, can go awry. As well, she is very content with her life and wants for nothing. But the Djinn has tales to tell and a tragic existence of regularly not getting folks to use all three of their wishes, which means continued imprisonment for him till he can convince someone to do the hat trick. Their conversation explores famous historical figures, tales of magic, love, and loss, and the question: can he convince Alithea to make her wishes and set him free? Chris, Alan, Marco, and Drew watched this colorful and intelligent Gaimanesque tale and had some thoughts.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). You can also check out Chris in his videocast, along with Martin Thomas and Danni Danger, that One Of Us does with our friends at Bell of Lost Souls: Crossover Event. He also regularly guests on the video game website Rage Select. Follow Chris on Twitter and Facebook and check out his Amazon Wish List.

ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING SEASON 2 REVIEW

Nobody had “Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez: Best Comedy Team of the year” on their 2021 TV Bingo Card, but Only Murders In The Building was a surprise hit that won over audiences and critics alike. The show was such a success, it was no mystery it would be renewed for another season of crime, clues, and comedy. Picking up right where Season 1 left off, our trio of true crime podcasters must clear their names after being framed for the murder of Bunny, the crotchety president of the Arconia Apartments. Our own resident podcasters, Neil, Frank, Harmoni, and Marco showed up to the tenants meeting for party games and cake, and to decide whether this is still a killer show, or should be evicted from your must watch list.

THE REHEARSAL SERIES REVIEW

Nathan Fielder of Nathan For You fame turns the cameras on the individual as he attempts to solve people’s problems by allowing them to rehearse them. As always, Nathan goes to great and sometimes unorthodox lengths to help the participants. Things don’t go off the rails so much as the rails cease to exist and we are pulled deeper into Nathan’s mind. Nathan is conducting comedy jazz (sometimes it’s about the things you don’t laugh at). Wright, Ryan, and Eliot tell you whether Nathan’s newest farce is worth following.

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox.

Ryan Aleck Hill (Screener Squad, Video and Audio editor)

You can follow him on Twitter but you’ll probably regret it.

” width=Eliot Nelson (Screener Squad, Staff Writer)

Soaked in the soggy rains of Seattle, Eliot developed a love of sci-fi, movies, cartoons, heavy metal, and all of geekdom. Pursuing his passion for the written word, he got his BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He has since worked exclusively in the foodservice industry, like any liberal arts major worth their salt. Eliot wiles away the hours listening to movie reviews, writing his epic sci-fi novel, and consuming as much media as possible. His favorite movies include The Lord of the Rings, City of God, Dawn of the Dead, and Groundhog Day. When not rambling to himself about the ineptness of entertainment executives, Eliot posts infrequently on Twitter and squawks regularly on his podcast The Debasement Tapes.

Screener Squad: So Vam

So Vam Movie Review

SO VAM MOVIE REVIEW

When a Shudder movie starts with a trigger warning, you know you’re in for… an indie LGBTQ+ drama with vampires? Kurt (Xai) can’t wait to run away and become a famous drag performer. But, he’s stuck in some part of Adelaide, South Australia (which, admittedly, has a checkered past regarding LGBTQ+ rights) in which open hostility to the LGBTQ+ community seems acceptable. Kurt falls victim to an older vampire who dresses like a cowboy pimp, and is rescued by a pack of younger-looking vampires. Using his new-found, albeit unclear, vampiric powers, Kurt and his new friends exact vengeance on bullies and bigots, and fight off the minions of the vampire that killed him. Wright leads his own vampire squad – Ben and Lewayne – into Kurt’s neon-drenched world of drag queens, bloodsuckers, and invisible brothers in the Shudder flick, So Vam. The guys hang around their cave, sipping O+ and talking about whether So Vam is the next big thing in LGBTQ+ horror, or if it just sucks, and should have a stake driven into its heart.

Ben Glasthal (Highly Suspect Review, Screener Squad, Breakfast Pub, Unstabletop Gamers, Video and Audio Editor)

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. For the rest of his free time, he can be found biking, drinking craft beer, being an amateur photographer, and playing video games by himself or on Twitch. He’s best found on Instagram or Twitter as @MovieReelBen.

The Orville: New Horizons Series Review

THE ORVILLE: NEW HORIZONS SERIES REVIEW

The Orville: New Horizons. Space: The final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterpri- oh, wait sorry! Wrong show! Ok, Let’s try that again. After a three-year hiatus, The Orville is back and…maybe better than ever? Ed Mercer (Seth MacFarlane) and his intrepid crew continue their exploration of new worlds and discovery of new life while ditching the Family Guy-isms of the previous seasons to present a deeper, darker and far more daring experience. Adventure, exploration, and philosophical conundrums abound on a series that continues to cement itself as must-see Sci-Fi. Check out the full review at OneOfUs.Net to hear why Rose, Dogget, Harmoni, and Mindy enjoyed The Orville’s new season as much as they did.

Rose Mattox (Screener Squad)

Originally hailing from Austin then Houston, Rose has been an avid movie and TV fanatic pretty much since birth. She spends spending her days watching Star Trek reruns, 60’s spy fiction, and Audrey Hepburn movies with her beloved minion (see: dog Riley). She also occasionally dabbles in comedy, screenwriting, as well as graphic and interior design. Rose has been contributing to One of Us since 2019 as a member of the Screener Squad, as well as making regular appearances on Eye on the Prize during awards season. She can be found on Twitter at @nightattheopera.

Danny Dogget (Screener Squad)

Hey persons, it’s your favorite canine Dogget! As many of you know, I don’t identify as a critic as much as a classy shock jock. That being said, I do my best to give all of you a well-balanced review filled with my true opinions and hopefully a few laughs. You can occasionally find me on other persons podcast like Mission Impodible (that’ll be 10 dollars Nathan). For the most part, you can find me doing reviews on Oneofus.net.

Harmoni Anderson (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Unstabletop Gaming)

Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Plus she can curse at us and not get fired….so bonus!
