The People We Hate at the Wedding Movie Review

THE PEOPLE WE HATE AT THE WEDDING MOVIE REVIEW

Jordan, Frank, Melina, and T.C. have been seated at the table reserved for those invited to a wedding who very clearly do not want to be there. They will spend the entire time talking shit about the people in attendance who they find annoying, dumb, and/or detestable, much like this new film starring Kristen Bell playing a version of Eleanor from The Good Place and her brother, Ben Platt with a beard (so as not to confuse him for a 30-something looking high school kid – obligatory Dear Evan Hansen dig), and Allison Janney as their mother who just wants her kids to just get it together long enough to attend their half sister’s wedding in London. Bell hooks up with Ted from Schitt’s Creek, Platt juggles his boyfriend and a potential threesome, and Janney rekindles her romance with her ex-husband. Meanwhile, the bride deals with her siblings’ bad attitudes and there are drunk bridesmaids, arrests, & Taco Bell. Plenty of drama unfolds through various intertwining plots in various degrees of comedy and seriousness. And if this sounds somewhat familiar, it’s because it’s yet another attempt to recapture the wonderfully crafted Love, Actually formula, but much like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, New Year’s Eve, He’s Just Not That Into You, and What to Expect When You’re Expecting, this movie fails to achieve what Love, Actually did. This should be a moving story about familial love in all its facets. It’s decidedly not that. And after the Squad shares their thoughts, there’s a good chance none of them will be invited to anymore weddings.

He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. For more of this eccentric nerd, you can follow her on Twitter here and read her original writings on Deepest Corners of My Notebook.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Slumberland Movie Review

SLUMBERLAND MOVIE REVIEW

Little Nemo in Slumberland is the groundbreaking comic strip from innovative cartoonist and animator Winsor McCay. Ever since it first appeared in 1905, the strip has been adapted multiple times for stage and screen, with varying results. Slumberland has the budget and digital tools to bring McCay’s eye-popping world to life in a way previous adaptations could not, but director Francis Lawrence (Constantine, I Am Legend) opts for telling a more conventional kids film narrative, with just a sprinkling of references to the original source material. Nemo (newcomer Marlow Barkley) lives in a picturesque lighthouse with her father Peter (Kyle Chandler), a kindly lighthouse keeper. When Peter dies in a boating accident, Nemo must leave the only world she’s ever known to live with Peter’s estranged brother, Phillip (Chris O’Dowd). Her uncle is kind, but boring, and utterly clueless about raising children, especially one as independent and imaginative as Nemo. In a dream, Nemo encounters Flip (Jason Mamoa) a half-man, half-animal outlaw character from the bedtime stories her father used to tell her. Flip is searching for a forbidden realm where your dreams come true and he reluctantly agrees to partner up with Nemo. Armed with a map of Slumberland, Nemo and Flip jump through other people’s dreams in search of the hidden doors that will take them to the deepest levels of Slumberland. Meanwhile, Agent Green (Weruche Opia) of the Bureau of Subconscious Activities is hot on their trail. Listen to our reviewers Ben, Rose, and Marco as they discuss whether the film will keep you awake or just put you to sleep.

Screener Squad: The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Review

THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY HOLIDAY SPECIAL REVIEW

Just in time for the holidays, Marvel/DC golden boy James Gunn has gifted us The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special now streaming on Disney+. It’s a loving nod to the corny TV specials of old; including the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special, which will definitely NOT be streaming on Disney+ any time soon. The holidays are rough for Star Lord Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) – being kidnapped from Earth by non-Christmas celebrating space pirates will do that to you – so the Guardians decide to cheer Peter up by bringing Christmas to him. All  Drax (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) have to do is go to Earth, pick up some decorations, and find the ultimate Christmas present: Earth’s mightiest hero, Kevin Bacon. What could possibly go wrong? Gunn stuffs this stocking with animated sequences, musical numbers, celebrity cameos, goofy gags, and a sentimental story about the magic of Christmas. Our reviewers Sarah Jane, Jordan, Neil, and Marco discuss whether this is a new holiday classic or just another lump of IP driven coal.

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

Star Wars: Andor Series Review

STAR WARS: ANDOR SERIES REVIEW

Unless you’ve been living under a pop culture rock for 45 years, you are aware of a little series of films and shows called Star Wars. It’s kind of a big deal. After 12 films and 9 TV series, and more books, comics, and video games than any normal person will ever have time to indulge in, there is something for everyone, though that won’t stop some from thinking every bit of the ongoing space fantasy should be exclusively designed to their specific tastes. And with Disney continuing to expand the franchise further and further, the stories in the galaxy far, far away have branched off in many different directions, which brings us to Andor, the newest episodic series created by Tony Gilroy for streaming on Disney+. It is the fourth live-action series in the Star Wars franchise, as well as a prequel to both the spin-off film Rogue One (2016) and the original Star Wars film (1977). The series follows thief-turned-Rebel spy Cassian Andor during the five years that lead to the events of the two films. Diego Luna reprises his role as Cassian and also serves as an executive producer. But when a franchise has done so much already, is there really anything new to be said and done? Well, it turns out there is, as Marco, Melina, and T.C. are more than happy to discuss. This character driven, action packed, political thriller, drama fills in gaps in the story of the creation of the Rebellion seen in the original trilogy with an ensemble of characters from every facet of the war. As Senator Mon Mothma (O’Reilly) attempts to build the rebellion through her political ties, Luthen Rael (Skarsgård), code-named “Axis” by the ISB, hides in plain sight as an antique dealer while drawing first blood in covert attacks. An ambitious Imperial officer, Dedra Meero (Gough) and zealot Syril Karn (Collar) vy to climb the ranks of the Empire. The Squad is blown away by the maturity of this show, but do they love it like some or loathe it like others?

Screener Squad: Interview With The Vampire

Interview With The Vampire Series Review

INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE SERIES REVIEW

It was a time before vampires adhered to a honour code and sparkled like a blood diamond that your wealthy uncle insisted was dug by a local whom was grateful for the job opportunity. It was a time when creatures of the night sang a song of sixpence and feasted upon the blood of virgins in ripped bodices. A time of a lot of horny, thirsty literature with profound drama intertwined with erotic fantasies. It was a time called “The 70s”.  Based on Anne Rice’s Iconic and groundbreaking novel Interview With The Vampire, this new adaptation has been created for AMC Plus. The story follows a very successful and ambitious man named Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson) who meets a vampire named Lestat (Sam Reid) in New Orleans in the year 1910. The two form a bond a friendship which quickly becomes sexual in nature but which violently transcends into God and creator as Louis is changed into a vampire by Lestat. For over a century Louis struggles to leave his old life behind and embrace that of being a monstrous killer. He shares his story in an interview with the renowned retired journalist Mallow (Eric Bogosian) where he reminisces about old friends, family, and flames, which are played by an electrifying ensemble that includes Assad Zaman, Bailey Bass, John DiMaggio, and Rae Dawn Chong. Bradly, Matt, and Harmony also reminisce about the 90’s film and in what ways the modern update is superior to the old Brad Pitt/Tom Cruise erotic romp, discuss the changes made for the better from the text of the book, and give a heartfelt shout out to the man, the myth, the legend: Antonio Banderas.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and Eye on the prize and maybe even provide some comments of his own.

Highly Suspect Reviews: The Fabelmans

The Fabelmans Movie Review

THE FABELMANS MOVIE REVIEW

It seems de rigueur for older directors to eventually come out with a tale about the bucolic days of their youth and their experiences that led to them being interested in film. Steven Spielberg making one (semi-autobiographical sure, but come on) is going to stir up interest. The Fabelmans focuses on a young “Sam Fabelman” (Gabriel LaBelle) who lives with his mother Mitzi (Michelle Williams), father Burt (Paul Dano) and three sisters. From an early age, learning the language of film becomes an obsession with Sam and he is encouraged by his family and boy scout friends who often help with his short movies. But all is not as rosy as it seems on the surface of this family. It’s through the process of learning about film that Sam begins to uncover a secret inside his family, and the processing of it would take (switching back to the actual Spielberg here) several decades and films to work it out. Ultimately, Spielberg has made a charming and not overly-dramatic bildungsroman here that decidedly is going to appeal to the fans of his career here the most, while dodging the bulk of meta-narrative you might expect. Chris, Wright, Marco, and Alan take on the challenge of decoding this narrative and largely come away pleased with it all. Even if they just want to make David Lynch cameo appearance jokes for longer than they should.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). You can also check out Chris in his videocast, along with Martin Thomas and Danni Danger, that One Of Us does with our friends at Bell of Lost Souls: Crossover Event. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox.

Marco Noyola (Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Audio Editor)

By day, Marco is a mild-mannered office worker, but by night he is a mild-mannered movie watcher. He does other mild-mannered stuff too.

“You don’t need to follow me. You don’t need to follow anybody!”

Chris HAlan Galinsky (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Deliberations of Doom)

Born and raised in Texas, Alan Galinsky is a lifetime movie fan. As a youth, he would rent multiple movies every weekend and go to the theater for the latest releases, and that pace has remained steady. When Alan isn’t watching movies, you can find him talking about movies. When he’s not talking about movies, you can find him playing music in the band Delicate Boys.

GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY MOVIE REVIEW

We do declare there is a mystery afoot! Daniel Craig is back as Benoit Blanc in Rian Johnson’s follow up to Knives Out, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Blanc is in search of a new case that will breathe life back into his detective skills. Luckily, Edward Norton plays an Elon Musk-Steve Jobs-Jeff Bezos-esque character that invites old friends to his private island for fun, relaxation, and a murder mystery! Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Leslie Odom Jr, Kathryn Hahn, and Janelle Monae play his detestable “Disruptors” who all may have a slight case of murder on the mind. Can Blanc solve the mystery before the relaxing weekend turns into a bloodbath?! Listen as Kim, Ben, Beau, and Wright crack the case as they review Glass Onion.

” width=Wright Sulek (Screener Squad, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Trash in the Can, Audio Editor)

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

Ben Glasthal (Highly Suspect Review, Screener Squad, Breakfast Pub, Unstabletop Gamers, Video and Audio Editor)

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. For the rest of his free time, he can be found biking, drinking craft beer, being an amateur photographer, and playing video games by himself or on Twitch. He’s best found on Instagram or Twitter as @MovieReelBen.

Beau Paul (Highly Suspect Reviews, The Original Gentlemen, Screener Squad)

Beau Paul is an Austin native, an actor, and a writer. Sometimes all at once! Previously he has attempted to be an internet entertainer (the funny ha-ha kind, not the naked moneymaking kind) at Spill.com, and now here on OneOfUs.net. You can read his pithy witticisms and the retweeted material of funnier, cleverer people on Twitter or Facebook, and can buy him stuff on Amazon.

Screener Squad: Atlanta Season 4

Atlanta Season 4 Review

ATLANTA SEASON 4 SERIES REVIEW

From knock off marketplace FuBu shirts, to massive fat stacks and investment plans, childhood obligations of looking out for blood, to the family for life you’d choose for yourself, and on-again-off-again relationships with your baby’s mama, to seeing that love as more than the mother of your child but as a woman who’s the protagonist in her own stories. Going from a man asking if he can measure your tree to a business partner and confidant, Earn (Donald Glover) has certainly come a long way and sadly at the peak of the show’s popularity it’s time to say goodbye. It’s the curtain call for Alfred ‘Paper Boi’ Miles (Brian Tyree Henry), Darius (LaKeith Stanfield), Van (Zazie Beetz), and Earn (Donald Glover) and they are going out on top.  Bradly, Jena, Eliot, and Dogget discuss their favourite moments from the season and series, how it stacks up against other sitcom finales, and the proper way to to cut sushi when you’d rather just have some Popeyes chicken.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

” width=Jena Perry (Screener Squad)

Jena Perry. Aka Luna. Aka Dion. Aka Memori. Aka Dog whisperer. Aka whiskey connoisseur. As you can see, depending on when you met this Oakland, California native, you have experienced a completely different person, each time. After finally deciding on a 13+year career choice as a Videographer and Radio Personality, Jena balances her time between pursuing her Doctorate in Philosophy, providing insightful and funny critiques on films and Television, raising her daughter and dog in Ohio, and constantly fighting off the existential dread that is being a dope black woman in America in the 20th century.

” width=Eliot Nelson (Screener Squad, Staff Writer)

Soaked in the soggy rains of Seattle, Eliot developed a love of sci-fi, movies, cartoons, heavy metal, and all of geekdom. Pursuing his passion for the written word, he got his BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He has since worked exclusively in the foodservice industry, like any liberal arts major worth their salt. Eliot wiles away the hours listening to movie reviews, writing his epic sci-fi novel, and consuming as much media as possible. His favorite movies include The Lord of the Rings, City of God, Dawn of the Dead, and Groundhog Day. When not rambling to himself about the ineptness of entertainment executives, Eliot posts infrequently on Twitter and squawks regularly on his podcast The Debasement Tapes.

Danny Dogget (Screener Squad)

Hey persons, it’s your favorite canine Dogget! As many of you know, I don’t identify as a critic as much as a classy shock jock. That being said, I do my best to give all of you a well-balanced review filled with my true opinions and hopefully a few laughs. You can occasionally find me on other persons podcast like Mission Impodible (that’ll be 10 dollars Nathan). For the most part, you can find me doing reviews on Oneofus.net.

Screener Squad: Next Exit

Next Exit Movie Review

NEXT EXIT MOVIE REVIEW

In the Immortal words of Bender the robot from Futurama, “Afterlife? If I thought I had to live another life, I’d kill myself now!”.  For Teddy (Rahul Kohli) and Rose (Katie Parker) these words carry more weight then even society is ready to realize.  The afterlife unquestionably exists and a lot of people are just dying to get there. The feature film directorial debut of Mali Elfman presents the classic road trip with unrequited lovers who have decided to embark on a final destination cross country from New York to California. In doing so they’ll discover that maybe life isn’t so much the end of a trip but all the hitchhikers your pick up along the way. Hitchhikers that are also haunted by ghosts both literally and therapeutically symbolic. Bradly, Jordan, Rose, and Melina conjure up a conversation regarding the tropes of a rom com blended with the spooky-scary cliches of paranormal horror, discuss some personal life journeys and how the film accurately portrays these ventures, and also prompt you the listener to invest your money in ghost coin! Yes you can take it with you. Send your money to Bradly today!

Rose Mattox (Screener Squad)

Originally hailing from Austin then Houston, Rose has been an avid movie and TV fanatic pretty much since birth. She spends spending her days watching Star Trek reruns, 60’s spy fiction, and Audrey Hepburn movies with her beloved minion (see: dog Riley). She also occasionally dabbles in comedy, screenwriting, as well as graphic and interior design. Rose has been contributing to One of Us since 2019 as a member of the Screener Squad, as well as making regular appearances on Eye on the Prize during awards season. She can be found on Twitter at @nightattheopera.
