Screener Squad: The English

The English Series Review

THE ENGLISH SERIES REVIEW

At the turn of the century the American plains were up for grabs and the hands that prevailed belonged to the quick and the the conniving. Cornella Locke (Emily Blunt) is an Englishwoman who has come to America seeking revenge for the death of her son. With plenty of clues and a fist full of dollars, this English rose is quick on the draw with a sharp tongue and intellect, and cuts down any rough rider that thinks her a damsel in distress. Eli Whipp (Chaske Spencer) is a Native American veteran of the civil war who is on his way to claim land he is owed for his service, despite being told that the white men will not honor the deal. Eli has a chance meeting with Cornelia and the two companions become star crossed lovers in the middle of a land and cattle conspiracy involving disease, double crosses, and the code of the west.  Bradly, Marco, and Melina settle round the campfire and discuss the tropes and cliches that still mosey on through these parts, compare the stylistic choices of the charismatic villains and larger than life heroes of this decades-spanning western epic, then settle things with the devil with a dance in the pale moonlight.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and Eye on the prize and maybe even provide some comments of his own.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Highly Suspect Reviews: The Whale

The Whale Movie Review

THE WHALE MOVIE REVIEW

Darren Aronofsky is a director who is seemingly determined to either really upset, disgust, or confuse his audience. The thing is though, he’s really good at it. For any given film of his, your results may and will vary, it’s just short-sighted to dismiss any of them. But here he comes with something unexpected with The Whale, an adaptation of a 2012 play by Samuel D. Hunter (who wrote the screenplay). Abandoning many of his stylistic tricks, Aronofsky lets the actors do what they do and tell the story in a straightforward, one location manner. That location is the inside of a small apartment where Charlie (Brendan Fraser) lives. He is a morbidly obese man, who is so far gone as to be on the verge of death. His one friend who comes to see him is Liz (Hong Chau) a nurse who berates him for his poor choices and dangerous lifestyle, but clearly loves him dearly. Charlie also teaches an online english class, although he tells his students his webcam doesn’t work so they can only see him for his mind. Everything gets shook up when his long-estranged daughter Ellie (Sadie Sink) appears. Charlie has asked her to come see him as he knows he doesn’t have long to live and wants to reconnect but she’s determined not to let him in emotionally, even as she lets him pay her to visit. There’s also a young missionary named Thomas (Ty Simpkins) who keeps coming by even though everyone involved has specific reasons to really dislike his church. What you’ve got is a conversational, character-based film that lets you know from the get-go you’re in for a tragedy. But will this tragedy give Thomas some peace before he goes? Listen to Chris, Frank, and Wright discuss this Best Actor in a Motion Picture (for sure) film and explain why they’ll probably never be able to bring themselves to watch it again. NOTE: Apologies, as we misattributed actress Sadie Sink to the film Red Rocket. That was Suzanna Son.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Chucky Season 2 Review

CHUCKY SEASON 2 SERIES REVIEW

Some dolls never know when to give up. Of course, why would they? When Chucky now has his soul split into many different Chucky dolls that seem to have evolved into specific personality types? They’re all still after the three kids, Jake, Devon, and Lexy. And to make it easier for them, the kids have been placed in a strict Catholic boarding school run by Father Bryce (Devon Sawa coming back to play a second role on the series). Meanwhile, Tiffany is still possessing the body of Jennifer Tilly and is doing her best to keep up the idea that she’s really her, even after all her co-stars from the 1996 film Bound drop by as well as her sister Meg and her twin children Glen/Glenda (somehow human after their initial fusion as a doll in 2004’s Seed of Chucky). Yes, it’s all very twisty and weird this season and Chris, Jordan, Matt, and Eliot untangle some of these knots and tell you all about Season 2 of this improbable but entirely likable show.

Screener Squad: The Wonder

The Wonder Movie Review

THE WONDER MOVIE REVIEW

The Screener Squad venture to 19th century Ireland to bring to you, the devoted listeners, our in-depth thoughts on a film that is as bleak as it is hunger-inducing. Seriously, just thinking about this film makes me want to grab the biggest cheeseburger I can find. But first things first…Netflix’s The Wonder, directed by Sebastián Lelio and adapted from Emma Donoghue’s novel of the same name, stars the always-wonderful Florence Pugh as Lib, a young English nurse who finds herself journeying to a small country town in Ireland. The year is 1892 and the country is still reeling from the lasting effects of the Great Famine, so of course her arrival is…shall we say less than well-received by the tight-knit community. To make matters worse, Lib has been tasked with observing a local girl who claims to have not eaten an ounce of food for four straight months. Her survival is nothing short of astounding and, according to the townsfolk, surely a miracle from God. As Lib becomes familiar with the fasting girl and her family, she grows increasingly determined to discover the truth behind this strange phenomenon while wrestling with her own tragic past. The premise of this film is a fascinating one and is bound to inspire plenty of discussion between those who can stomach (so to speak) the idea of watching it. But does the film succeed beyond the strength of its concept…or is this a meal you can ultimately skip? That’s what Rose, Jena, Matt and Melina have come together to discuss.

Screener Squad: A Christmas Story Christmas

A Christmas Story Christmas

A CHRISTMAS STORY CHRISTMAS MOVIE REVIEW

It is really hard to live up to what has been dubbed by society as a “classic.” Especially when the original has been on a constant loop, every Christmas Day, on Ted Turner’s Broadcast Station. I know I know… what’s a broadcast station (traditional television) and who the fuck is Ted Turner (old white man with a shit load of money)? Anyways, it’s hard to live up to being a “classic.” So T.C., Ryan, and Chad were all surprised that there was a sequel coming out for A Christmas Story, 40-ish years after the original. Then T.C., with his Batman-esque, detective work; reminded us that there were already 2 sequels before today’s film A Christmas Story Christmas. And that’s a title NOT keeping Christ out of Christmas. Is it any good? Present company is mixed on the quality of this movie, but we all agree it could have been way worse, because that’s normally what happens. But what do we know… Why don’t you grab that red rider bb gun, cozy up in your best bunny jammies, and give A Christmas Story Christmas a try.

Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. Chad is a frequent podcaster, most notably posing as a co-host for the podcast “The Film Illogical Society.”

He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. Screener Squad: Wednesday

Wednesday Series Review

WEDNESDAY SERIES REVIEW

They’re creepy, kooky, mysterious, spooky, and all together on Netflix. Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega, follows the title character as she attempts to solve an ancient mystery from the time of buckled hats and witch burnings. The secrets are all hidden within the walls of her new school that was previously attended by her parents Gomez (Luis Guzmán) and Morticia Addams. She’ll have plenty of help from her  fellow classmates which include werewolves, vampires, gorgons, and a bee keeper named Eugene (Moosa Mostafa). Wednesday will also have to navigate the treacherous choppy waters of the most dangerous kind of triangle. We aren’t talking Bermuda. Tyler (Hunter Doohan) the son of the town sheriff fancies himself some goth chicks and has the hots for Wednesday. Also the troubled tall, dark, and handsome artist Xavier (Percy Hynes White) has his eye on our heroine and may be the key to unlocking her newly budding psychic abilities. Meanwhile the queen bee of the school Bianca (Joy Sunday) is tired of this gothic psycho getting all the attention from the hot dudes in the school. Did I mention that this wasp happens to be a siren? Much like the popular CW series Riverdale, these teens and their brooding drama is smack dab in the middle of a murder mystery that their towering, tyrannical Principal Larissa Weems (Gwendoline Christie) has deemed a Hyde Hoax. Bradly, Harmoni, Dogget, and Frank discuss their favourite Addams through the decades, contemplate what works and what doesn’t about this murder mystery at a Fantasy School setting, and use the powers of precognitive dissonance to predict if Netflix gives season to a green light or an axe.

SPIRITED MOVIE REVIEW

Every now and then, and not often mind you, someone makes a new Christmas movie that isn’t just a checklist of tropes and cliches. Once in a great while, someone actually creates a unique and worthwhile Christmas movie that dares to be worthy of an annual rewatch alongside the Muppets, Elf, and Die Hard. Rare though it may be, a new Christmas standard CAN be made. And we’re not talking about a groaning submission to your cousin’s insane love of the dead-eyed Polar Express or the TNT forced obligation of A Christmas Story playing in the background for 24 hours. No, we’re talking about what very well might be a new entry into the rewarding modern Christmas movies, like Klaus or Carol. Bradly, Ryan, and T.C. are pleased as peppermint to discuss Spirited, the new Will Ferrell/Ryan Reynolds take on the oft trodden classic Charles Dickens’s 1843 novella A Christmas Carol. For nearly two centuries, Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet-To-Come, have led a team of afterlife spirits in helping find and redeem one new human soul or “perp” every Christmas. Christmas Present (Ferrell) has been eligible for “retirement” for decades but refuses to do so, despite being tempted by the promise of settling down and making up for his own failures in his past life. Scoping for a new soul to redeem, the spirits encounter Clint Briggs (Reynolds), a renowned controversial media consultant. Despite Marley’s insistence that Briggs is an “unredeemable” soul, Present is set on him as he believes that his redemption could have a “ripple” effect, making him a force for positive change in humanity. The Ghosts begin a year of research on Clint, preparing for the annual haunt. And if all of that spin on the classic isn’t enough to hoo you, this is a full-blown musical. Gather around the fire and enjoy some hot cocoa with the Squad as they unwrap this new Christmas classic.

Ryan Aleck Hill (Screener Squad, Video and Audio editor)

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. You can follow him on Twitter but you’ll probably regret it.

Highly Suspect Reviews: Violent Night

Violent Night Movie Review

VIOLENT NIGHT MOVIE REVIEW

What’s a holiday season without a little violent Christmas mayhem? In a bit of inspired casting, David Harbour takes on the role of (actual) Santa Claus in this brutal action comedy from the director of the Dead Snow films. It’s Christmas Eve and Santa is drunk, tired, and kinda about to be over it. Kids are selfish, the world is full of greed and there’s more people on his naughty list than ever before. But when he’s dropping off presents at the home of a rich family, he finds himself caught up in trying to save a little girl who still believes. Murderous criminals with Xmas call-signs, led by the growly Scrooge (John Leguizamo) have invaded the home and are determined to break into a safe that hides a lot of cash. It’s up to Santa to remember what it was like pre-Christmas Magic to deliver some lumps to the decidedly naughty. Chris, Alan, Tessa, and Marco sing the carols to this nasty little new Xmas classic.

You can also check out Chris in his videocast, along with Martin Thomas and Danni Danger, that One Of Us does with our friends at Bell of Lost Souls: Crossover Event. He also regularly guests on the video game website Rage Select. Follow Chris on Twitter and Facebook and check out his Amazon Wish List.

Chris HAlan Galinsky (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Deliberations of Doom)

Born and raised in Texas, Alan Galinsky is a lifetime movie fan. As a youth, he would rent multiple movies every weekend and go to the theater for the latest releases, and that pace has remained steady. When Alan isn’t watching movies, you can find him talking about movies. When he’s not talking about movies, you can find him playing music in the band Delicate Boys.

Tessa Morrison (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Unstabletop Gamers)

Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. Wrote and contributed to website and magazine Strange Kids Club for five years reviewing films, video games, and Halloween candy. Co-hosted a Public Access show called Ladies of Fandom. Previously guested on podcasts Blood Over Texas, Threequel Club, Trash in the Can, Retro Movie Roundtable, and Nerds with Mics.

DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 312: SUPERSONS AND SUPERMONSTERS

Chris and Wright have a mighty stack. So mighty, they don’t quite get to everything they planned on. But what you do get is a look at some supersons vs Starro, 80s wide-release horror classics getting the 4k and a 90s one that was rightfully overlooked, a loving look at some beloved rock monster gods from outer space, and so much more.

He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Screener Squad: Disenchanted

Disenchanted Movie Review

DISENCHANTED MOVIE REVIEW

And they all lived happily ever after. Cue the music and roll the credits right? Oh ho ho I don’t think so!  What happens after your true love’s kiss and the wedding cake is cut? For Giselle and Robert it’s a big move to a luxurious private estate, an addition to their family in the form of a bouncing baby girl, and navigating the magic moody swinging teenagers going through a phase. 2007’s Enchanted long awaited sequel Disenchanted is finally here, directed by Adam Shankman and streaming on Disney Plus. It continues the fish out of water love story of a New Yorker named Robert (Patrick Dempsey) and a once upon a time royal princess named Giselle (Amy Adams). Only now, they’re dealing with obstacles more akin to the real world than from a land of make believe, such as morning train commutes and impressing the private school PTA. Where’s a rampaging dragon when you need one? Giselle and step daughter Morgan (Gabriella Baldacchino) have a brief confrontation about family by blood as opposed to step kids. Giselle in her heart feels she can never be anything more then Morgan’s step mother so decides to make a wish on a magic wishing wand that results in enchanted hijinks. Only the power of love before the clock strikes midnight can return the magic to where it belongs and restore the bonds of love we call family. This is a Disney sequel so it also features a cast of returning and brand new characters. Maya Rudolph is an evil boss mom with a latte. Alan Tudyk is a magical anthropomorphized singing scroll. The returning James Marsden is the new King of Andalasia with Idina Menzel as the Queen who has a show-stopping vocal performance. Bradly, Frank, Harmoni, and Ben use the power of memory to discuss their relationship with the first movie and take up arms against the beast of sequelitus that haunts the lowly hills of every Disney sequel. Can the power of critique bring praise to tasteful art or will this film bring about a dark curse upon this franchise?

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Harmoni Anderson (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Unstabletop Gaming)

Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Plus she can curse at us and not get fired….so bonus!

Ben Glasthal (Highly Suspect Review, Screener Squad, Breakfast Pub, Unstabletop Gamers, Video and Audio Editor)

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. For the rest of his free time, he can be found biking, drinking craft beer, being an amateur photographer, and playing video games by himself or on Twitch. He’s best found on Instagram or Twitter as @MovieReelBen.
