Screener Squad: Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities

Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities Review

GUILLERMO DEL TORO’S CABINET OF CURIOSITIES SERIES REVIEW

Are you tired of horror anthologies? Of course you’re not. You’ve seen Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors on a train, or Trilogy of Terror all alone in a small apartment with a suspicious looking Zuni doll. John Kassir’s voice as the Crypt Keeper in Tales From the Crypt still reverberates through your creaky bones. Maybe, just maybe, the entire concept has been done to death. Rest assured, if YOU think you’ve seen everything, the creator and host of the new Netflix anthology series Cabinet of Curiosities, Guillermo Del Toro, definitely has you beat. Join him as ringleader of the best anthology series possibly ever made, alongside host Wright Sulek and horror pundits, Trevor Tujillo and Drew Tinnin, as they dissect every episode. Diverse submissions from the genre’s elite filmmakers such as Guillermo Navarro, Vincenzo Natali, Ana Lily Amirpour, Panos Cosmatos, and Jennifer Kent make this series (and the review!) something not to be missed.

Screener Squad: The Friendship Game

The Friendship Game Movie Review

THE FRIENDSHIP GAME MOVIE REVIEW

I don’t know if you’ve ever been to High School, but it’s a fucking drag. You stink, so you need a shower all the time, peers make assumptions about your character, and everyone is filled to the brim with hormones… It’s great! (HEAVIEST OF SARCASM). So if you hated how awkward you were in High School, you’re going to hate The Friendship Game even more. Written by Damien Ober and directed by Scooter Corkle (apparently not a made up name), The Friendship Game right out of the gate throws it’s premise at you, like a hungry toddler throwing a fit after you inform them that the movie The Friendship Game exists. Four friends stumble on a “game” that supposed to test their friendships before they move on to college. What it really tested was my patience for lazy writing. Look, it’s not the worst thing ever, but for such a high concept plot, it barely scratches the surface. Nor does it address many conflicts that arise in the film. Overall; Jordan, Lewayne, Bradly, and Chad all think this movie could have been better if more time was used to flesh out characters and help define motivations more clearly.

Chad Halvorsen (Screener Squad)

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. Chad is a frequent podcaster, most notably posing as a co-host for the podcast “The Film Illogical Society.”

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. For more of this eccentric nerd, you can follow her on Twitter here and read her original writings on Deepest Corners of My Notebook.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and Eye on the prize and maybe even provide some comments of his own.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. Highly Suspect Reviews: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Movie Review

BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER MOVIE REVIEW

The Black Panther has died and thanks to Killmonger in the first film, there is no more of the sacred plant that connects a chosen Wakandan with their ancestors to take up the mantle and gain the powers. The world, thinking Wakanda is without a protector, has begun making incursions to try to steal vibranium for their own uses, but Wakanda is, of course, far from defenseless. But things get VERY complicated when an underwater nation previously unknown rears its head in anger when it is discovered that someone has invented a vibranium detector and has started trying to mine another deposit of it in the sea. The leader of this aquatic society, Namor, contacts Wakanda offering to team up and destroy the rest of the surface world together, or become the first city to be destroyed. Meanwhile, the hunt is on for the inventor of the machine that can find vibranium and it turns out to be Riri Williams, a college girl with a beyond-genius level IQ and it’s up to Shuri and Okoye to keep her safe. There are a lot of plates spinning at once in this sequel and much of it is tinged with inherent sadness of course as Chadwick Boseman is mourned throughout. Chris, Wright, Marco, and Kim take a look and give their thoughts.

Screener Squad: Something In The Dirt

Something In The Dirt Movie Review

SOMETHING IN THE DIRT MOVIE REVIEW

The indie film duo of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have made five feature films: Resolution in 2012, The Endless in 2017, Spring from 2017, and Synchronic in 2019. And now, they’ve offered up Something in the Dirt. When neighbors John and Levi witness shocking supernatural events in their Los Angeles apartment building, they realize documenting the paranormal could inject some much-needed fame and fortune into their humdrum lives. Simple enough of a premise, right? Well, not exactly. Moorhead and Benson’s movies are trippy oddities. They have shared similar themes and stylistic choices, and this is no exception. Mostly, their movies are strange explorations of unsettling horror that aren’t actually horror movies, but more the idea of horror. They focus on two guys (brothers or life long friends or just meeting) and unravel lives which are woven in the inexplicable or paranormal. All of of their movies are never truly more than dialogue-heavy scenes that dig deeply into character studies rather than erupt into visual spectacles. They’re small budget indie films with very small casts and typically just Moorhead and Benson as the main crew. Their movies could be called Loveraftian in a way, but they never actually show anything terrifying, rather they present the unexplainable in wandering narratives and heady ideas that will leave you sitting in contemplation as to the nature of the stories you’ve watched and quite possibly leave you questioning your own reality. Moorhead and Benson are scrappy-doo filmmakers determined to explore utterly surreal and universal themes in very real and grounded stories. Confused? Well, that’s actually exactly on brand for these fellas. Something in the Dirt offers more of the same odd look at the world between the cracks in time and space, and just might leave you wondering just what the hell you just watched, but in a kinda cool way, not a “what a waste of time” way. Maybe. Or maybe not. Look, these dudes are frickin’ weird, okay? And Lewayne, Neil, and T.C. sit down to chat about those very feelings.

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. The Good Nurse Movie Review

THE GOOD NURSE MOVIE REVIEW

Doctor Strange, Hawkeye Pierce, Doc McStuffins, Richard Kimble, Dr. Teeth of The Electric Mayhem: All practitioners that heal the body and soothe the soul. But what about the unsung heroes that draw blood and take grievances? There’s Nurse Ratched, Annie Wilkes, and of course Greg Focker to name a few.  Surely there must be some good nurses out there in the historical archives of cinema? Which brings us to the Netflix feature The Good Nurse directed by Tobias Lindholm and written by Krysty Wilson-Cairns based on the true events of Charles Graeber’s book. Charlie Cullen (Eddie Redmayne) is transferred to a new hospital after the death of a patient under his care. His co-nurse Amy Loughren (Jessica Chastain) who has her own ailments to deal with discovers a slew of transfers between hospitals in Charlie’s past, each after mysterious circumstances that resulted in the death of one of his patients. In the film, she works together with internal affairs to expose the wicked practices of Charlie, and the hospital bureaucracy that let him continue his body count for so long. Bradly, Frank, and Kim practice the medicine of critique and diagnose the life of a thriller that gives away the cat and the bag within the opening credits. By review’s end they’ll determine what a good nurse truly is, why so many stories of good nurses are lacking in cinema, and decide if the leads are worthy of their Oscar glory.

Screener Squad: Weird: The Al Yankovic Story

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story Movie Review

WEIRD: THE AL YANKOVIC STORY MOVIE REVIEW

It appears that Hollywood’s appetite for the musical biopic is truly insatiable. We’ve seen many a superstar receive the rise-and-fall biopic treatment, starting from their humble beginnings through their meteoric ascension, their drug-addled nosedive and eventually their triumphant return to the spotlight. It’s a tale as old as time…one might say to the point of parody. And what better way to lovingly send up the oft-repeated tropes of the biopic than to tell the “life story” of perhaps the greatest musical parodist of all-time: Weird Al Yankovic. The perfectly-titled Weird: The Al Yankovic Story stars Daniel Radcliffe, Evan Rachel Wood, Rainn Wilson and a confetti explosion of cameos…seriously, you have no idea. Directed and cowritten by Eric Appel (alongside Yankovic himself), the film takes what was originally a Funny or Die skit and expands it into a nearly two-hour feature that only grows more absurd and ridiculous with each passing minute. Check out the full audio review at Oneofus.net to find out just how much certified Weird-os Jordan, Wright, Elliott and Melina loved this delightful film.

But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

” width=Eliot Nelson (Screener Squad, Staff Writer)

Soaked in the soggy rains of Seattle, Eliot developed a love of sci-fi, movies, cartoons, heavy metal, and all of geekdom. Pursuing his passion for the written word, he got his BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He has since worked exclusively in the foodservice industry, like any liberal arts major worth their salt. Eliot wiles away the hours listening to movie reviews, writing his epic sci-fi novel, and consuming as much media as possible. His favorite movies include The Lord of the Rings, City of God, Dawn of the Dead, and Groundhog Day. When not rambling to himself about the ineptness of entertainment executives, Eliot posts infrequently on Twitter and squawks regularly on his podcast The Debasement Tapes.

Enola Holmes 2 Movie Review

ENOLA HOLMES 2 MOVIE REVIEW

Flush with the success of her first case, Enola Holmes 2 finds our titular heroine (Millie Bobby Brown) starting her own detective agency. Unfortunately, Enola finds herself overshadowed by her famous older brother Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and nobody wants to hire a private detective who is so young – and so female. Just as she’s about to give up, Enola is approached by a poor girl whose sister has gone missing. Enola takes the case but the search for a missing matchgirl leads her to a much bigger mystery, one whose trail leads her from the slums and factories of London, to high society balls, Scotland Yard, and Parliament. Along the way Enola crosses paths with a corrupt Inspector (David Thewlis), her outlaw suffragette mother (Helena Bonham Carter), her romantic interest Lord Tewksbury (Louis Partridge) and Sherlock Holmes himself. Our own Baker Street Irregulars Dogget, Ben, Harmoni and Marco examine the movie with dispassionate logic but the sight of Henry Cavill sprawled across a fainting couch was a little too emotionally stirring for some of our reviewers.

By day, Marco is a mild-mannered office worker, but by night he is a mild-mannered movie watcher. He does other mild-mannered stuff too.

“You don’t need to follow me. You don’t need to follow anybody!”

Danny Dogget (Screener Squad)

Hey persons, it’s your favorite canine Dogget! As many of you know, I don’t identify as a critic as much as a classy shock jock. That being said, I do my best to give all of you a well-balanced review filled with my true opinions and hopefully a few laughs. You can occasionally find me on other persons podcast like Mission Impodible (that’ll be 10 dollars Nathan). For the most part, you can find me doing reviews on Oneofus.net.

Ben Glasthal (Highly Suspect Review, Screener Squad, Breakfast Pub, Unstabletop Gamers, Video and Audio Editor)

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. For the rest of his free time, he can be found biking, drinking craft beer, being an amateur photographer, and playing video games by himself or on Twitch. He’s best found on Instagram or Twitter as @MovieReelBen.

Harmoni Anderson (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Unstabletop Gaming)

Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Plus she can curse at us and not get fired….so bonus!

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi

STAR WARS: TALES OF THE JEDI SERIES REVIEW

It is often said that no one hates Star Wars more than Star Wars fans. For some, the continued expansion of the franchise will simply never be good enough, because it isn’t what they’ve so deeply ingrained into their consciousness as “correct”. Anything after Return of the Jedi that isn’t the EU they approve of is obviously the worst thing ever created, and the people responsible should be skewered by multiple lightsabers. But then there are those who understand that Star Wars is like pizza. Even when it’s not what you were hoping for, it’s still pizza, and who doesn’t love pizza! While the Fandom Menace screams “Not my Star Wars!” or “This is woke feminist propoganda!” or “I wanted pepperoni and onions!”,  the rest of us find new and amazing additions to the galaxy far, far away, and much of that expanded content has been courtesy of Mr. Dave Filoni, the godfather of modern Star Wars. Tales of the Jedi is a new anthology series that explores different Jedi characters from the prequel trilogy era. There are six episodes split into two “paths”: the first following fan favorite (even the jerks who hate all things new in the franchise can surely agree to this, right?) Ahsoka Tano across various points in her life, and the other depicts a young Count Dooku before his fall to the dark side of the Force. Each episode connects to a piece of the missing puzzle from the prequels and even overlaps with key events in those films, thus continuing to improve those films and their contexts. The series is done in the familiar animated style of the Filoni-verse that began with The Clone Wars in 2008. Sarah Jane, Melina, Bradly, and T.C. enter the Jedi Counsel chambers to discuss this excellent miniseries.

The Patient Series Review

THE PATIENT SERIES REVIEW

We here at one of us can not stress how important therapy is and are happy to participate in the takedown of the taboo surrounding mental health and psychiatric help. That being said, if you need a therapist please don’t abduct a doctor and chain them up in your basement. Joel Fields and Joseph Weisberg present The Patient on Hulu or Disney+ if you reside up north. Doctor Alan Strauss (Steve Carell) wakes up one day to find himself chained to a bed with Sam Fortner (Domhnall Gleeson) who is obviously in desperate need of psychiatric care. Sam tells Dr. Strauss that he needs to be fixed….or else.  Dr. Strauss in his prison reflects on this life, and contemplates what he can do to ensure his future.  Bradly, Jena, and Neil psychoanalyze the Hitchcockian method of the slow burn thriller, discuss the top tier acting from the two leads, and exclaim their mutual love for David Alan Grier.

Jena Perry. Aka Luna. Aka Dion. Aka Memori. Aka Dog whisperer. Aka whiskey connoisseur. As you can see, depending on when you met this Oakland, California native, you have experienced a completely different person, each time. After finally deciding on a 13+year career choice as a Videographer and Radio Personality, Jena balances her time between pursuing her Doctorate in Philosophy, providing insightful and funny critiques on films and Television, raising her daughter and dog in Ohio, and constantly fighting off the existential dread that is being a dope black woman in America in the 20th century.

Neil Anderson (Screener Squad)

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.
