‘Mary Poppins’ Comes Flying Into The National Film Registry Alongside 24 Other Films

This week, Disney’s Mary Poppins joined an illustrious club of cinematic triumphs. The film joined 24 others, including Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, as they were added to the National Film Registry.

One of the greatest features of the world of film is that a movie can tell many more stories than the one contained in the plot. Each adds just a little more to the overall tapestry of life and our collective cultural identity. Some films shine above the rest because they’ve impacted our lives and the way we view things even if we haven’t seen them ourselves. They are essentially time capsules, allowing us a window into the past. These movies aren’t just about us, they are us. This is why the Library of Congress created the  National Film Registry.

This week the Library of Congress announced the 25 films that would be added to the Registry this year.  They are:

Bless Their Little Hearts (1984)

Brandy in the Wilderness (1969)

Cicero March (1966)

Daughter of Dawn (1920)

Decasia (2002)

Ella Cinders (1926)

Forbidden Planet (1956)

Gilda (1946)

The Hole (1962)

Judgment at Nuremberg (1961)

The Lunch Date (1989)

The Magnificent Seven (1960)

Martha Graham Early Dance Films (1931-1944)

Mary Poppins (1964)

Men and Dust (1940)

Midnight (1939)

Notes on the Port of St. Francis (1951)

Pulp Fiction (1994)

The Quiet Man (1952)

The Right Stuff (1983)

Roger & Me (1989)

A Virtuous Vamp (1919)

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966)

Wild Boys of the Road (1933)

While I won’t even pretend to have seen half of these flicks (to my eternal shame), let me comment on those I have seen. It is surprising to me that Mary Poppins wasn’t already in the Registry. It is just so damned iconic, plus the music is catchy as hell. The same goes for The Magnificent Seven, a classic that really pushed the boundaries of what could be shown in terms of violence at the time. Pulp Fiction makes sense as it is the movie that made Tarantino a household name and spawned a multitude of imitators. That, and the movie is so damn quotable! Finally there is what I consider the odd man out, Roger & Me. I’m not going to get into the character of Michael Moore,  but love him or hate him, he has left an undeniable mark on the culture. My only question is why this one was selected over his much more well known later films? In any case, this year’s selections have been preserved in our national film storehouse and they are to be commended for their entry to such a lauded collection.

How many of this year’s entries to the National Film Registry have you seen? Share your thoughts on the list in the comments below!

Argo Screenwriter to Draft ‘Batman vs. Superman’

Good news, production-wise, for Batman vs. Superman?! Excuse me as I drop dead from shock. It has been reported that the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Argo, Chris Terrio, has been brought in to write a draft for the movie.

David S. Goyer,  the writer of Nolan’s Batman trilogy, originally wrote the film’s screenplay, but sources close to the project have stated Terrio has been hired to revise the script before filming starts. Goyer is apparently too busy working on other projects, such as the upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman,  to revise the screenplay personally.

Even though David S. Goyer’s Man of Steel screenplay received very mixed reviews, I believe Chris Terrio’s involvement in the writing process can only help the sequel. Also, this isn’t Chris Terrio’s first time working on the same project as Ben Affleck. Ben Affleck,  the director and star of Argo, worked closely with Terrio on what turned out to be one of the best films of 2012. I’m hoping because of their established dynamic, Terrio might add a few scenes that will help highlight Affleck’s great acting skills and make him a believable Batman. I am certain that Terrio and Affleck can create a Batman that silences the actor’s dissenters.

Overall, I’m glad they’ve brought Terrio to assist in the writing process. He is an amazing scribe and I’m sure he’ll only add quality to an otherwise lackluster script. I still have concerns with the movie, but this is a much needed ray of hope.

Does Chris Terrio’s hiring give you any positive expectations for Batman vs. Superman? Share your thoughts in the comment section!

Watch a Movie with Us: ‘Die Hard’

Welcome to the party, pals!

The weather outside may be frightful, but watching John McClane decimate an international gang of thieves masquerading as terrorists is so delightful.

Maybe that’s not how the song was written, but like McClane, we adapt to the situation. Just in time for the holidays, the fine folks at OneOfUs.Net invite you to watch with them one of the greatest Christmas films of all time: Die Hard. It may not have reindeer or snowmen, but it does have forty stories of pure excitement!

Brian and Chris are joined by their good friend Q Manning (owner and founder of Rocksauce Studios here in Austin) as well as (briefly) Luke Mullen, and our friend and fan Josh Gripman, as they come out to the couch, watch a great movie, have a few laughs. They wax geeky about why they love the flick and what makes it a classic, but also crack plenty of irreverent wise that is sure to have you ho-ho-ho’ing like Alan Rickman.

We’ll be watching from a Blu-ray so feel free to use our Amazon link to pick yourself up a copy in case you don’t already own Die Hard. Wait, why don’t you already own Die Hard?

Die Hard Blu

Kick off your shoes, watch for broken glass, and prepare for a towering good time as you spend the holidays watching Die Hard with us!

Bonus Treat: Play our Die Hard egg nog drinking game. Sip every time Bruce Willis’ stunt double is conspicuously visible.

The Nielsen Company Presents the 10 Best-Selling Home Releases of 2013

The men behind One of Us’ premiere home release review podcast, Digital Noise, do their very best to help you, the consumer, make smart purchasing choices. They sit through as many DVDs and Blu-Rays as they can, regardless of quality, so that you can go straight for the gems and avoid the garbage. Sometimes people heed their advice. 2013 was not one of those times.

Despite their hard work day in and day out, their efforts have been Sisyphean this year. According to the Nielsen Company, the top-selling home release of 2013 was Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2.

You owe Chris, Brian, and Luke an apology, America.

The final entry in the film series based on the Twilight books dominated the category and beat out every movie from Marvel, Disney, and other well-known studios. Nielsen based its findings on aggregate disc unit sales (DVD, Blu-ray, Blu-ray/DVD Combo packs, etc.) made from December 31, 2012 to December 1, 2013. Their research reaffirmed a basic truth of media: franchises sell better than original properties. Of the top ten best-selling home releases in 2013, six were either prequels, sequels, or otherwise new entries in an existing property. Only Wreck-It Ralph, Hotel Transylvania, Rise of the Guardians, and The Croods managed to reach the top ten without previous films to support them. The ten best selling home releases of this year were:

1. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2
2. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
3. Skyfall
4. Wreck-It Ralph
5. Monsters University
6. Hotel Transylvania
7. Rise of the Guardians
8. Iron Man 3
9. The Croods
10. Star Trek Into Darkness

Franchises beat original properties in other media outlets as well. Each of ten best-selling video games for Xbox 360 and PC were sequels, while The Last of Us was the only title of the ten best-selling PS3 games to exist outside of an established property.

There not too much to say about this trend, people like to support what they already know they like. Of course, there is nothing wrong with supporting a franchise. However, it appears that studios and developers will be less incentivized to take a chance on new material for the foreseeable future. Until consumers indicate that they want more media from unrecognized sources, the flood of sequels will continue unabated. This is an unfortunate scenario for the creators of tomorrow.

Did you take a chance on an original property this year? Which non-franchise movies, comics, games, or books from this year would you recommend to fellow geeks? Let us know in the comments!

James Cameron Shares Grand Plans for ‘Avatar’ Sequels

While James Cameron has plenty of detractors loaded with criticisms of his work, no one can say he lacks ambition. While some people would be content after creating the highest-grossing film of all time and raising the bar for visual effects, Cameron has been working non-stop on the first of Avatar‘s three sequels. In an interview with the Associated Press, he discussed some of his plans for the series, which include a family drama that he compared to that of The Godfather.

Cameron announced that a deal with the government of New Zealand had been finalized and the second, third, and fourth films in the Avatar franchise would be filmed there, just as the original film was. He also stated that he is aiming to release the currently-untitled Avatar 2 in 2016. While talking to AP, Cameron expressed his belief in the series’ longevity, saying,

“It’s going to be a lot of new imagery and a lot of new environments and creatures across Pandora…We’re blowing it out all over the place. At first I thought I was going to take it onto other worlds as well, in the same solar system, but it turned out not to be necessary. I mean the Pandora that we have imagined will be a fantasy land that is going to occupy people for decades to come, the way I see it.”

The director also stated his intention to build the franchise around the main character of the first movie, Jake Sully, and his Na’vi lineage.

“It was very Jake-centric. His story seen through his eyes…We spread it around quite a bit more as we go forward. It’s really the story of his family, the family that he creates on Pandora. His extended family. So think of it as a family saga like ‘The Godfather.'”

If James Cameron plans to make the Avatar franchise as enduring as The Godfather and its sole sequel (what third film?), then he has a lot of catching up to do. The first film definitely deserves praise for its visuals, but the story is nothing more than a predictable double-agent scenario with an environmental conservation message tacked on for good measure. Perhaps it’s beyond me, but I don’t see a Godfather-type saga in there at all.

Additionally, Sam Worthington wasn’t offensive as Jake Sully, but the character wasn’t terribly complex and I doubt audiences feel any sort of special affection toward him. It will take a dedicated character development effort to turn him into the Michael Corleone of science-fiction. I suppose the character’s bland nature is a plus in this regard. Cameron can do anything with Sully because he’s basically a blank slate with blue skin. The same is true of the rest of the characters from the first movie. Everyone is a one-note stereotype designed solely to move the plot along as predictably as possible. We’ll have to wait until 2016 to find out if they ever become more than that.

Do you share my doubts about Cameron’s efforts to turn the Avatar franchise into the next great saga? What are some necessary steps he must take to achieve his goals? Let us know what you think in the comments!

The New ‘Dawn of The Planet of The Apes’ Trailer is Bananas!

I absolutely LOVED Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It was my personal favorite movie that came out that year.  It was the perfect blend of drama and action and it even had a severely under-appreciated performance from my man, Andy Serkis, as Caesar. Yeah sure, there were some silly things in there that don’t make any sense, and the human characters were completely one-dimensional, but this was CAESAR’S movie. His arc was so tragic and powerful, that when he rallied up the rebels for viva la chimpanzee, I was 100% there.

So here comes the sequel three years later. When I first heard that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes wouldn’t be in the hands of Rupert Wyatt, the first movie’s director, I was pretty disappointed. The only film I saw by the new director, Matt Reeves, was Cloverfield and I thought that movie was pretty fun. But nonetheless, I was still really disappointed…

But then the trailer was released:

There is no need for magnifying glasses and microscopes to analyze this baby. After the virus spread, the humans that survived fought each other, because that’s what humans do when anarchy and the apocalypse happen. Now, they must band together and war against the genetically enhanced apes, and battle to be the dominant species on earth.

After watching this trailer. All I could say was Ho…ly… SHIT! Chills my friends. Mother loving CHILLS! First of all, I love me some James Franco, but I’m sorry, Gary Oldman is a huge step up. I am expecting a lot from him as a leader in the human resistance against the apes. And let’s not forget about Jason Clarke! I mean, when he screamed “I need to speak to Caesar!” it just had such a demanding presence (edit: thanks for the correction, Joe_Bender). I’ll also be quoting that in my phone calls forever now.

Secondly, I love love LOVE the direction they are going in! It seems to be a much darker and more serious tone than the first one. I’m getting the same feeling I got when watching The Dark Knight trailer for the first time, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Dawn is to Rise as The Dark Knight is to Batman Begins. This film looks like it is going to be emotionally draining, with bad-ass war scenes in a ruined city. And that my friends, is something I am DOWN for!

Finally… Andy Serkis. ANDY, F*CKING, SERKIS. He doesn’t even say a single word, nor make a single sound. You just see his eyes that stare directly in to your soul, and make you shit yourself. And then he’ll grab that shit, and throw it at your face. Because it looks like he is PISSED. Probably because he wasn’t nominated for any of his work as Gollum. And boy, he is coming back with a VENGEANCE!

My body is ready.

What about you fellow OOUies? What are your thoughts on this trailer? Are you just as excited as me? Or are you hesitant? Comment below, let One of Us know!

Trailer Reaction: ‘Grand Piano’

For all of you claiming that there is nothing new and original happening in the world of film today, allow me to direct your attention to a little film entitled Grand Piano.

Part of what makes this film so interesting is just how easily it could suck. Crafting a thriller with such a goofy premise as this and making it work requires Alfred Hitchcock level focus and skill. If this Eugenio Mira dude isn’t up to the task, this movie will slip from tense and suspenseful to riotously bad comedy. Mira appears to have a musical background as well as being a director, which should serve him well here. Check out the trailer here:

Wood seems like a bit of inspired casting as nobody does wide-eyed panic quite like him. Elijah Wood has one of the most expressive faces in film today, a key component for a film like this. Wood’s character isn’t allowed to fully react to what is happening to him. He has to keep up appearances as best he can and go on with the show. Wood has to carry the emotion on his face, we need to feel his anxiety and fear while trying to get through the performance so that we can invest in the character.

While Wood may be perfect casting, his isn’t the most intriguing one. That honor goes to John Cusack as the villain. Generally we see Cusack in roles ranging along the quirky and/or schlubby spectrum in film. Even when he is playing a badass, what we haven’t seen much of at all is him playing the straight sinister villain. Cusack has that everyman quality and that is part of what makes him scary, the idea that the average person right next to you might in fact be a crazed killer.

The film looks to be a fascinating tale of suspense with some cool concert pieces to boot.

So does the Grand Piano trailer tickle your ivories, or does it leave you flat? Fire off your comments below and let us know!

Movie Review: ‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues’

Will Ferrell returns to the seventies (well, 1980 anyway) in the role that launched a thousand man-child comedies: Ron Burgundy. In this sequel to 2004’s Anchorman the whole news team is back and bigger, or at least older, than ever.
