THE EXORCISM MOVIE REVIEW

What’s hard to believe about The Exorcism is that it was shot pre-pandemic much earlier than Crowe’s other and much better exorcism movie, The Pope’s Exorcist. Yet, after viewing the film, it’s understandable why the studio shelved it for nearly 5 years. Russell Crowe stars in The Exorcism, his latest bout with demonic possession. Written and directed by Joshua John Miller, son of Jason Miller and original star of The Exorcist, The Exorcism tells the story of washed up and guilt stricken actor Anthony Miller (Russell Crowe). Shamed by his past addictions and death of his wife, Miller has the opportunity to not only rebuild his relationship with his estranged daughter Lee (Ryan Simpkins), but also star in Hollywood’s latest remake of a VERY familiar movie. Who knew that remakes of beloved horror classics could spark literal demons? Miller’s exploration of Crowe’s character is a misguided attempt at a thoughtful character study surrounding guilt and shame wrapped in a schlocky run-of-the-mill horror flick. Listen as Wright, Frank, and Eric appreciate some of the attempts by the actors but are confused by Miller’s take on elevated horror.

WHAT REMAINS MOVIE REVIEW

Writer/Director Ran Huang and Co-Writer Megan Everett-Skarsgård presents What Remains, based on a true story mystery of a man confessing to multiple murders that he may have not committed. The film begins with a chance at a new life as Mads Lake (Gustaf Skarsgård) is released on a probationary period but the outside world is far less kind then the chains and shackles of solitary confinement. After returning to psychiatric care via the legal system, Mads confesses to even more murders. His primary caregiving psychiatrist Anna Rudebeck (Andrea Riseborough) and tired old alcoholic detective Soren Rank (Stellan Skarsgård) want to understand Mads to unearth his past and discover the truth behind his actions and trauma. The three enter a cycle of misery and lean on each other at their worst moments, as the past comes calling but leaves no message at the beep. Bradly, Jason, and Rae break out their monocles and decipher how much of this “based on a true story” film stays with the facts, ponder the power of a film that refuses to adhere to any genre or niche, then deduce whether or not a documentary would have been the right call for such a mystery. Is it true crime or a waste of time? It’s just us with Justice on one of us dot net.

Before even graduating high school, Jason was animating and podcasting with the Austin-based movie review site Spill.com. From this formative experience, he gained an eclectic taste and knowledge that he carried into a rich career working in the animation industry. Notable projects include Marvel’s Hit Monkey, FXX’s Legion, Netflix’s America: The Motion Picture, and working for companies including Nickelodeon, Rooster Teeth, PBS Kids, and many more. As a cineast, it’s his belief that his favorite movie is one that he hasn’t seen yet. His thirst for great art is unquenchable, whether that means consuming it or contributing to it himself.

HUMANIST VAMPIRE SEEKING CONSENTING SUICIDAL PERSON MOVIE REVIEW

What do you do when you’re a vampire, and the thought of biting someone’s neck puts you in a moral quandary? This is the dilemma of Sasha, a young teenager of the vampyric persuasion who, despite her family’s pressure, is unable to bring herself to hunt down a human for their delicious, and necessary for her survival, red ichor. However, an opportunity presents itself with the arrival of Paul, who is depressed, bullied, and on the verge of a suicidal breakdown. Since Sasha needs to kill someone to drink their blood, and Paul already wants to die, it seems like the perfect solution. How hard could it be? Such is the premise of Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person (or Humanist Vampire Too Sensitive to Kill as it is also known), the feature film debut of acclaimed Canadian writer-director Ariane Louis-Seize. Our resident bloodsuckers, Mindy, Mike, and Jason go back and forth on the merits and lessons of this modern tale of the classic mythical monster, with opinions of its overall message as varied and diverse as vampire lore itself. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. I USED TO BE FUNNY MOVIE REVIEW

Wanda Sykes once said “I enjoy stand-up because it has the biggest reward: instant gratification. You can hear the people laughing.” The following film is about a young woman who raised laughter like an au pair raises a widower’s troubled teenage daughter. Sam (Rachel Sennott) is struggling with PTSD from a violent crime committed by a former employer, and who was once a shining star as a stand up comic. Brooke (Olga Petsa) is a teenage girl who just lost her mother to cancer and her father to bad choices and alcoholism. When Brooke runs away, Sam, the former au pair of Brooke, has to decide whether or not to join the search for the runaway and by doing so, decide to leave the safety of her seclusion. This non linear narrative analyzes who these two women were before their trauma, and what road lies ahead for travelers carrying the weight of moments that were out of their control. It’s not all thought provoking philosophical reflections on hope and despair, though. Rachel Sennott and fellow comedians Sabrina Jalees, Caleb Hearon, Dani Kind, and Hoodo Hersi are here to lighten up the mood with witty banter and comical observations. Bradly, Frank, and Jordan discuss the staying power of dramatic storying telling paired with perfect comedic timing, share some of their own experiences with depression, and triple down on the brilliance of Shiva Baby, Bottoms, and Bodies Bodies Bodies.

THE BIKERIDERS MOVIE REVIEW

Director Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter) dives into the world of motorcycle enthusiasts in the 1960s with The Bikeriders. Inspired by a book of photography of the same name that chronicled the lives of outlaw bikers in the period, the film is an original story by Nichols. It is told largely through the recollections of Kathy (Jodie Comer) a ‘normal’ who fell for a young rider named Benny (Austin Butler) and ended up sucked into their world. The ‘bike club’ was started by Johnny (Tom Hardy) an older motocross rider who just wanted to have a clubhouse to gather with like-minded motorcyclists who wanted to, at least in their off time, reject the mores of society and party. But it’s hard to keep an organization stable when ‘anarchy’ is pretty much a core tenet and soon they find the violence and drugs brought in by newer members causes things to spin wildly out of control. Chris, Wright, Jason and Nathan take a look and get their motors running.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. INSIDE OUT 2 MOVIE REVIEW

Riley is now a teen, and as we all know, a BUNCH of new emotions come out of nowhere with puberty, few of them terribly pleasant but all of them rather insistent. Thus have things changed inside Riley’s head with a group of new feelings suddenly taking the controls such as Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and most prominently, Anxiety (Maya Hawke). Anxiety dismisses the old set of anthropomorphized emotions in Riley’s head and banishes them from the control room. It couldn’t be a worse time for anxiety to take the lead because Riley is off to a hockey camp where she is trying to make the team and be friends with the cool girls, but is it at the expense of her old friendships and her sense of well-being? Pretty much. Inside Out 2 is going to deliver what you loved about the first film, but perhaps with somewhat less poignance and a bit of being overstuffed. At least, that’s what Chris, Wright, Spidermike, and Editor Mike thought. Check out their review and get inside their heads to be introduced to a new emotion ‘tipsiness’.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). Michael Riojas (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal Smallville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. POOLMAN MOVIE REVIEW

The Screener Squad has gathered in the One Of Us City Hall to go to the very bottom of the weekly agenda and discover that they have a review collecting dust and algae. Poolman is a “comedy” mystery film starring, produced by, written by ,and directed by one of our many cinematic Chrises, Chris Pine, in his debut in the director’s chair. There are several other famous faces in here that one might speculate showed up in this vanity project because Pine really is the most likable of the Chrises, and they all decided to do him a solid and be in this supposed film. This has earned quite a mixed bag of reactions from critics — and by mixed, we mean a mixed bag of “Bad”, “Awful”, “What is this?” The thing of most note is how many critics walked out of the premiere of Poolman at the 2023 Toronto Film Fest. Pine portrays Darren Barrenman, a pool cleaner residing in a Los Angeles apartment complex owned by parental figures Jack (Danny DeVito) and Diane (Annette Bening). Darren is a vocal advocate, reminiscent of Erin Brockovich, constantly advocating for local improvements, much to the chagrin of Counselor Stephen Toronkowski (Stephen Tobolowsky). Enter femme fatale June Del Rey (DeWanda Wise), who unveils a real estate and water scheme akin to “Chinatown,” implicating Toronkowski and prompting Darren to employ his amateur detective skills. With the help of his diverse group of friends and neighbors, Darren embarks on a mission to expose Toronkowski’s wrongdoing. And while critics, on the whole, have been less than enthusiastic, what’s the Squad’s take? T.C. and Dogget do their best to get through the agenda and not drown in their like of Pine and dislike of this movie.

When not podding, Eric works as an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797.

STAR TREK DISCOVERY – SEASON 5 REVIEW

These are the voyages of the starship Discovery. Its five-season mission: to set-up spin-off shows; to seek out new fans and new demographics, to boldly go where no Trek series has gone before: the streaming era! While some may prefer the episodic format of Strange New Worlds, the goofy meta-comedy of Lower Decks, or the nostalgia-fest that was Picard Season 3, the truth is that none of those shows would exist were it not for Discovery. The first new Trek show in over a decade, Discovery proved that the franchise could survive both its return to to the small screen, as well as J.J. Abrams. Discovery‘s fifth and final season kicks off with Captain Michael Burnham racing to find a literal mystery box — OK, maybe we haven’t completely shaken J.J.’s influence, yet — which provides the first of many clues leading to an advanced technology belonging to the Progenitors, an extinct race of beings who are the genetic ancestors of virtually all humanoid lifeforms in the universe. That’s right, the Disco crew is off to meet their literal makers. Like the Genesis Device before it, the Progenitor’s tech has the potential to destroy life, as well as to create it. Naturally, there are other parties looking for it, including the warlike Breen Confederacy, and a pair of renegade, star-crossed lovers who have their own motives for getting to the tech first. As usual, Discovery relies on an overly large cast to tell its story. Fortunately, it only took three nerds to record a spoiler-filled One of Us review. Listen to T.C., Jordan, and Marco as they discuss the myriad issues they’ve had with Discovery, while still giving it the respect it deserves for bringing Star Trek back into our living rooms every week.

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know.
