RICKY STANICKY MOVIE REVIEW

Every once in a while, a filmmaker grows so far beyond the types of movies that they began their career with, it’s amusing to look back over their filmography and see how much they’ve matured. A director like Adam McKay can start his cinematic career with Anchorman and then win an Oscar for The Big Short. Directors like that never really return to the low brow comedies of their yesteryears. This movie is not one of those cases. From the Academy Award Winning Best Picture director of Green Book and Movie 43, Peter Farrelly, comes Ricky Stanicky. Dean, JT and Wes (Zac Efron, Andrew Santino, and Jermaine Fowler) invented an imaginary friend as kids who they’ve been blaming for their every deviant act, awful behavior and lie for 25 years. After a failed scheme, it’s time to fess up or keep the lie alive, and what sort of comedy would this be if they just faced the music? These three man-children recruit an Atlantic City porn parody singer (John Cena) to play the role of their life long friend. And oh the shenanigans that unfold. Melina, Mike, and T.C. juggle the balls of early naught’s poop comedy and the undeniable facts that John Cena is an effortlessly brilliant comedian, and Zac Efron is making Oscar bait movies now, but are their abilities enough to elevate this movie and call it a worthwhile watch?

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). THE FEUD SEASON 2: CAPOTE VS THE SWANS REVIEW

After his novel In Cold Blood in 1966, eccentric life of the party Truman Capote climbed the ladder of high life society and became the legendary culture icon we all know, love, and imitate to this very day. What’s a scaling of social ladders though without friends to exploit? FX on Hulu scandalously presents Feud season 2 Capote vs The Swans, taking place in a nonlinear narrative between the early 60s to 1984 over the course of 8 episodes. Truman Capote (Tom Hollander) was rubbing elbows with the swans. Swan number 1, Babe Paley (Naomi Watts) was a survivor of a horrible accident who Truman describes as a reconstructed porcelain doll. Her true love and husband William Paley (Treat Williams) had a real true love of sleeping around. Swan number 2 Nancy ‘Slim’ Keith (Diane Lane) had a knack for tearing down the weak, talking up the strong, and engaging in the most saucy of affairs. Swan number 3 C. Z. Guest (Chloë Sevigny), a gorgeous gal that has an ear for gossip but the eyes on her all belong to the IRS. Can the swans forgive the ugly duckling behavior of Truman after he spills the ink on all their most intimate and vulnerable secrets? Bradly, Frank, and Melina separate the trash talk from the truth, praise the performances and showrunner Gus Van Sant, and get involved in a little sassy talk as they drag Ryan Murphy’s name through the mud.

GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE MOVIE REVIEW

This new film in the monsterverse continues the story from the last film where Godzilla was VS Kong instead of X Kong (which we’re still not sure what the x is specifically supposed to mean as they never multiply them by each other). To be clear, this is in the American monsterverse, not the Japanese one rebooted recently with Godzilla Minus One. This is an important distinction because Godzilla Minus One is a magnificent film, arguably the best Godzilla film ever made. And the American monsterverse is, well, sometimes it’s a lot of dumb fun. Which is what we were hoping for here, but clearly not everyone got what they wanted. Kong, now in the Hollow Earth, mopes around looking for evidence of other great apes. Godzilla up on the surface is getting super-charged, for reasons no one is sure of but it seems to indicate a massive new kaiju threat is coming. The humans (notably Rebecca Hall, Kaylee Hottle, and Brian Tyree Henry who were in the last film) are investigating a mysterious signal coming from Hollow Earth. Sooner or later all their paths will collide and kaiju stomping will commence. But for the movie stomping, we’ll leave that to Chris, Alan, and Marco who decidedly have a mixed reaction (at best).

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). THE ANIMAL KINGDOM MOVIE REVIEW

If I could walk with the animals, talk with the animals, squeak and squawk and flock with the animals well then I may just be one of the animals. In the distant future a small percentage of human beings are becoming ill and physically mutating while mentally adapting into various types of animals. Bird men, walrus women, teen wolves, chinchilla children, why is this happening? A virus, or evolution? From writer director Thomas Cailley and co-writer Pauline Munier, The Animal Kingdom is a French film that asks the viewer what makes us the most human? François Marindaze (Romain Duris) has just lost his wife to this change and is now the single father of a coming of age adolescent Emile Marindaze (Paul Kircher). Emile is at a time where his body is starting to change. He’s growing a little taller, he’s starting to develop his own musk, he’s attracted to the opposite sex, he has lots of fur where there was no fur before, he wants to mark his territory and lick what he likes. François and Emile are now both at a crossroads, the well worn path of the life society presents to all of us since we first learn to walk upright, or a path the philosopher’s have labeled freedom. Will François lose another member of his family to this dreadful disease or will Emile fight the primal urge to be himself? Bradly, TC, and Lewayne aren’t just monkeying around with this review. The triptych of terriers sniff out the many themes in this coming of age story about family and friendships while discussing the modern day allegories of fear and prejudice. Does this film join the brotherhood of the wolf or cage up and sell out to the zoo?

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. ROAD HOUSE MOVIE REVIEW

in 1989, a cult classic was born as a shirtless and oiled up Patrick Swayze sauntered into the Double Deuce as the legendary bouncer Dalton. It was only a matter of time before they made another one of these. So they did, in 2006, with Johnathon Schaech playing Dalton’s son. And because that was such a forgettable movie, they decided to make another one with a very cut and oiled up Jake Gyllenhaal in the title role. In this new instalment, Dalton is a disgraced former UFC fighter who’s hired to bounce at a Florida Keys bar. He crosses paths with a local gangster who doesn’t take too kindly to this cowboy riding into his town and sics his wild dog on ol’ Dalton. As this movie is determined to up the ante on the action, who better to go blow for blow with a fictional disgraced former UFC fighter than an actual disgraced former UFC fighter? The notorious Conor McGregor makes his on-screen debut chewing more scenery than you’d think one Irishman could. Kimberly, Nathan, and T.C. play nice and discuss the bar fights, bloody broken bones, and babes of this film and the original that inspired it.

Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

Nathan Flynn (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

YOU’LL NEVER FIND ME MOVIE REVIEW

Spring into your horror binges with every fright fanatics favorite streaming service…Shudder presents from writer/director Indianna Bell with co-Director Josiah Allen, You’ll Never Find Me. Patrick (Brendan Rock) lives alone in the deepest darkest corner of the trailer park. One stormy night, a young woman in need of shelter knocks at his door and unlike a lonely Washington latchkey kid, he does not want to let her in. Patrick isn’t exactly a bad samaritan but he’d rather enjoy his seclusion than have company over tea. Her cries for help unlock his empathy as well as the door. The visitor (Jordan Cowan) drenched from the storm and no explanation as to how she came to arrive at the trailer park begs a lot of questions for Patrick. With Patrick and the visitor now trapped in the trailer, what follows is two strangers caught in a game of cat and mouse leaving the audience wondering which has claws and which has the more believable tail. Does the Hitchcockian bottle horror elevate the tension or give the plot too much rope to hang itself? Bradly, Lewayne, and Drew discuss what they love about Shudder, why bottle films work best when the set itself is a character, and debate the line between hospitality and hostel.

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox.

Eric Samaniego (Trash in the Can)

Eric is a multi-award show watching, sometimes comedian, sometimes writer that began life as a Muppet and 1930’s screwball comedy obsessed goon and continues to carry a torch for all things felt and funny. With a passion for genre films, poor taste, and whiskey, he and co-conspirator, Wright Sulek, indulge in the best/worst films the world has to offer with One of Us’s podcast, ‘Trash in the Can’. When not podding, Eric works as an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797.

DAMSEL MOVIE REVIEW

Once upon a time, the Screener Squad gathered in the high tower of the castle Of Us to sing the glorious tales of Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown), the adolescent daughter of Lord Bayford (Ray Winstone) in a land struggling to survive. The adventurous young lady receives a proposal from Queen Isabelle (Robin Wright) of Aurea for Elodie to marry the Prince Henry. On her father’s urging, Elodie agrees to the marriage to help their impoverished people. Upon arriving in Aurea, Elodie and Henry initially both seem uninterested in each other, but begin to bond as they share a desire to travel the world. And despite the worry of the thankfully not evil stepmother, Lady Bayford (Angela Bassett), Elodie and Henry marry and soon after take part in an ancient ritual in the mountains to celebrate their union. The Queen describes the pact between the first king and an ancient dragon, and before Elodie can even think of happily ever after, she is dropped into the ancient dragon’s lair. Thus begins a survival tale through the treacherous mountain. Knights of the One Table, Rae, Drew, and T.C., draw their swords to take their noble strikes at this fairy tale quest.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL MOVIE REVIEW

Ever since it premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival, buzz has been growing for Late Night for the Devil, from Cameron and Colin Cairnes, and starring veteran character actor David Dastmalchian in a rare leading role. It’s 1977 and late night talk show Night Owls with Jack Delroy is perpetually stuck in the number two slot behind ratings juggernaut, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Reeling from personal and professional setbacks, Jack needs a hit, and he’s struck on the perfect idea: a spooky Halloween night episode whose guests include both a psychic, and a professional skeptic, and a parapsychologist, but the star of the show is Lily, a teenaged girl who grew up in a satanic cult, and who is allegedly possessed by the devil. What could possibly go wrong? Our reviewers aren’t the biggest fans of found footage films, but they appreciated the way this film ratchets up the tension while playing with the conventions of the genre, and examining the effect of mass media at this particular time in history when most people only had three channels to choose from. Tune in to hear our hosts, Frank, LeWayne, and Marco as they interview one another about this clever commentary on the power of television, mass hysteria, and the high price of fame.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).
