BUTTHOLE SURFERS: THE HOLE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUTT MOVIE REVIEW
Legendary music journalist Michael Azerrad said about his iconic book Our Band Could Be Your Life, “The most surprising and rewarding chapter to write was the Butthole Surfers chapter. I’d always thought of them as a bunch of drug-addled reprobates – which maybe they were – but it turned out to be more complicated than that.”. The new documentary about the band, Butthole Surfers: The Hole Truth and Nothing Butt, feels like this quote was the mission statement. Directed by Tom Stern, who had worked with the band and various members in the past, takes what may be the craziest music history on record, and makes a fast-moving, sometimes animated, sometimes told by puppets, funny as hell documentary that genuinely has some really emotionally devastating moments as well. The band’s legend grew from their one of a kind Texas-fried psychedelic punk to the anarchic surrealist spectacle of their live shows. But their journey behind the scenes was almost as crazed as their public personas. Filled with interviews from some genuinely impressive gets, and more honesty about what all this was really like that you’re typically used to seeing in a band documentary, The Hole Truth and Nothing Butt deserves to be held up as a classic of the genre. Chris, Marco, Drew Tinnin, and Beau gather to discuss the film and, of course, their own Butthole Surfers related experiences that thankfully, the statute of limitations has run out on them being charged for any of their admittances.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar and theater management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).
