A Better Yesterday – Ep. 2: The Once and Future Dragon

A Better Yesterday - A show about the history of Hong Kong action films

A BETTER YESTERDAY – EP. 2: THE ONCE AND FUTURE DRAGON

In this second episode of A Better Yesterday, Ross O’Brien continues his deep-dive with Hong Kong Cinemissimo Bey Logan, focusing on how Bruce Lee swam through the streams of both Hong Kong and American pop culture to become the most iconic figure in martial arts cinema history.

Was Bruce Lee a once-in-history anomaly, or the inevitable product of Hong Kong’s cultural crosswinds? Looking at his San Francisco birth to Hong Kong childhood in a Cantonese opera family, his early child-star film roles, and his immersion in multiple martial arts lineages, Bey also examines the overlooked influence of filmmakers like Ng Cho-fan, who gave young Bruce screencraft—and a strong sense of social conscience.

We look at Bruce’s martial arts philosophy — Jeet Kune Do — and how his ideas about cross-training, ranges of combat, and “being like water” prefigured modern MMA. Then we turn to Bruce’s uneasy Hollywood years: the promise and limits of *The Green Hornet* and *Longstreet*, the language-and-accent barrier that kept him out of leading roles, and the almost-made philosophical epic *The Silent Flute* with James Coburn and Sterling Silliphant. When that project stalls and Hollywood won’t build a vehicle around him, Bruce reluctantly turns back to Hong Kong — setting the stage for *The Big Boss*.

*The Big Boss* is a deceptively simple “naive villager vs. heroin syndicate” plot. But this rough-edged, modestly budgeted actioner—with its embedded class politics, and quiet innovation in updating kung fu cinema to a post–French Connection era of globalized crime—detonated at the Hong Kong box office, instantly turning Bruce into the biggest action star in Asia.

Join the pair in another ramble, about Bruce Lee as migrant kid, street fighter, philosopher, movie star, and global myth.

Films, series, and works discussed:

*Born Free* (1966)

*Golden Gate Girl* (1941)

*The Orphan* (1960)

*The Green Hornet* (TV, 1966–1967)

*Longstreet* (TV, 1971–1972)

*Kung Fu* (TV, 1972–1975)

*The Big Boss* / *Fists of Fury* (1971)

*Fist of Fury* / *The Chinese Connection* (1972)

*The Chinese Boxer* (1970)

*The Way of the Dragon* (1972)

*Game of Death* (1972–1978)

*Enter the Dragon* (1973)

*The Silent Flute* / *Circle of Iron* (1978)

This episode was recorded in a quiet corner of The New Era Martial Arts Club and was mixed and produced, as ever, by Mark Haskins of Post-Op Media. Check out Bey’s books at www.reeleast.com!

Screener Squad: Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair

Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair series review

MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE: LIFE’S STILL UNFAIR

As the They Might Be Giants performed theme goes for the 2000-2006 sitcom Malcolm in the Middle, “You’re not the boss of me now and you’re not so big.” Twenty years later, the dysfunctional family and their boy genius returns on Hulu and Disney Plus with a 4 episode mini series called Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair. Malcom (Frankie Muniz) has a successful career he seems to enjoy. He has a girlfriend named Tristan (Kiana Madeira) who’s ready to take the next steps of the relationship by being introduced to Malcolm’s daughter Leah (Keeley Karsten). Malcolm, still breaking the fourth wall to explain to the audience his inner monologue, is overjoyed that he’s finally obtained the functional, happy life he’s always dreamed about. This was managed by cutting his family out of his life entirely. His assertive, confident, and very intimidating mother Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) and bumbling, charming, and slightly unhinged father Hal (Bryan Cranston) have a very special wedding anniversary party coming up. They’ve gotten RSVPs from their children Francis (Christopher Masterson) and his wife Piama (Emy Coligado), Reese (Justin Berfield), Dewey (Played in this series by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark), Jamie (Anthony Timpano), and their non-binary child Kelly (Vaughan Murrae) who Lois was just pregnant with in the original series finale. All they are getting from Malcolm is an excuse as to why he’s too busy to attend. One thing leads to another and Malcolm’s parents discover he has a girlfriend and a child while they discover that Malcolm has living parents and siblings. Comedy hijinks ensue. Bradly and Marco share their thoughts on the original series and share laughter over its successful return. If this is the final curtain call it’s been a hilarious ride.

DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 374: CHRIS GETS WEEPY

John and Chris get one of those middlin’ stacks of titles. No hate. Then there’s everything else, some of which our reactions to may surprise you. Check out this week’s Digital Noise!

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Deliberations of Doom)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar and theater management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).

ROOMMATES MOVIE REVIEW

High School graduation: that’s the time to steel yourself with courage, say goodbye to those lifelong friendships you made next to the bleachers, the lockers, in algebra, and of course in the confines of your heart. But wait! What if you don’t have any BFF’s to bid adieu to? Roommates on Netflix tells the story of a girl named Devon (Sadie Sandler) with big dreams of being an architect but no pictures of friends on the walls. She meets Celeste (Chloe East) at college as freshman roommates. Celeste is flirty, emboldened, blonde and stunning; a real wild card who plays by her own rules that she makes up on the fly. Is a cool chick giving Devon the time of day? Has the odd duck finally found her tribe? Without any experience of having a constant companion who is all up in your business, Devon will have to navigate the ups and downs of sisterhood if she’s going to survive her freshman year at college and be a well adjusted adult open to the human experience. This is a Happy Madison production so all of Adam Sandler’s best pals are here to make an appearance. Bradly, Sarah Jane, and Drew Shaw, discuss bad karaoke, the awkward years of being a freshman at college, the cliches found in every Happy Madison discussion, and odd couple comedies of old.

THE PITT SEASON 2 REVIEW

The Pitt returns for Season 2, continuing its unflinching, real-time look at life inside one of America’s busiest emergency rooms. Set ten months after the explosive first season, which was marked by a mass shooting, the new season unfolds over a single 15-hour real-time shift on the Fourth of July, where chaos, conflicting personalities, and life-and-death dealings collide once again. As Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) prepares to step away for a risky motorcycle sabbatical, Dr. Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi) a new attending steps in. Langdon (Patrick Ball) returns from recovery. Dr. King (Taylor Dearden) faces a deposition. And a hundred other storylines intersect. Familiar faces are joined by fresh med students thrown straight into the deep end. The series doubles down on its raw, immersive storytelling, capturing the relentless pace and emotional toll of frontline healthcare, often in extremely bloody and graphic depictions. Eoin, Mike the Editor, and T.C. scrub in at the One Of Us OR to cut into the season and examine every intense, messy, and brutally honest moment.

He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. Born and raised in Dublin Ireland, Eoin currently lives in London and has been an avid film lover from as far back as they can remember. Eoin enjoys going to the cinema weekly regardless of the film: new, old, or the most random title. They have no preconceived notions when taking in a new film. They tend to look for the good in any film they watch and will always love the art form. They are a major fan of actress-led cinema and will never apologize for this one film bias.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is an award-winning creative jack of all trades, and is pretty competent with most of them. He is a writer, director, animator, video editor, and motion graphics artist. He has tried his hand at nearly every form of artistic expression at least once. He was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania where he fell in love with film, writing and special effects at an early age. His obsession with film would lead him to being locally known as a “human IMDb” and being on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He would study film in Pittsburgh before taking his talents to Austin. Not letting something like Tourettes get in his way, he has produced a handful of animated short films that have won awards from film festivals all over the globe. He has also written several yet-to-be-produced screenplays and TV pilots, with some of them being recognized in screenwriting competitions. He has even created motion graphics and animations for several clients, from movie theaters to Twitch streamers. When not creating or watching films, he enjoys MST3K, classic video games and buying vinyl records. He loves dogs, dropping obscure pop culture trivia and watching travel videos. He currently resides in Austin Texas and can be followed on the Instamagrams at @ohheyitsmikejm. His body of work can be found at his homepage or you can take a gander at his somewhat-impressive IMDb listing here.

STRANGER THINGS: TALES FROM ’85 SERIES REVIEW

Just when you thought it was safe to cancel your Netflix subscription, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 is back to deliver another shot of 80s nostalgia, or at least nostalgia for a streaming series that ended less than five months ago. Set between the events of seasons two and three, this new animated series is essentially Stranger Things Season 2.5, although it tells a stand-alone story about a new interdimensional threat with no connection to the events of future seasons. Once again, the super powered Eleven and her growing team of not-super-friends must investigate a string of disappearances and creature attacks, preferably before curfew. Our reviewers Eoin, Chris Ayres, and Marco stayed up past their bedtime to binge all 10 episodes of this… prequel? requel? sequel? in-between-quel? Whatever you want to call it, our reviewers have opinions about it. Listen to the review to find out whether this latest entry in the ‘kids on bikes’ genre was good enough to turn their frowns upside down.

Screener Squad: The Madison

The Madison series review

THE MADISON SERIES REVIEW

John Steinbeck once said “I’m in love with Montana. For other states, I have admiration, respect, recognight, even some affection. But with Montana, it is love.”  Paramount Plus presents  the new show by Taylor Sheridan; a story of a man who had two great loves in his life: his wife, and his annual vacation quietly fly fishing in mountain rivers. The Madison is a six episode series starring Michelle Pfeiffer as family matriarch Stacy Clyburn. Newly widowed after her husband, Preston Clyburn (Kurt Russell) dies tragically in a plane crash, Stacy and her two adult daughters Abigail (Beau Garrett) and Paige (Elle Chapman) discover the secret treasure Preston had away from the hustle and bustle of New York City. In reading his journals, Stacy realizes Preston’s trips to Montana were a gift he wanted to give to his family. In the midst of her grief, she must make the difficult decision on what to do with his mountain estate paradise and how to return to her life without him. Frank, Eoin, and Bradly discuss the themes of tragedy and despair in our darkest moments and how well Taylor Sheridan uses the performance of Michelle Pfeiffer to explore them. It’s not all sadness and sharing however as the crew also examines how much this story seems to despise the city life while looking at old fashioned country living through rose coloured glasses.

Shira introduces Bret to the cult of Amanda Bynes comedies to round out the necromancers’ tour of cult classic films. Her pick, She’s the Man, came out more than 20 years ago but remains timeless for romcom fans and Gouda cheese lovers. Listen to find out if we convert Bret and then don’t miss the horror remixes that explore whether she’s man enough to kill people.

YOUR HOSTS

Shira More (Necromancer, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Shira grew up in Dallas, TX, and need only put her palm to the ground to sense the direction of a semi-annual sale. She knows a little about a lot of things: Mary Shelley, Survivor (yes it’s still on), Otome Isekai’s, Slavoj Zizek. Is she method acting a supporting character in a Hallmark Christmas movie or is she just extremely undiagnosed? We’ll never know. When Shira’s not campaigning for French Kiss (1995) to finally be on streaming, you’ll find her debating the charming and unsettling similarities between rom coms and horror movies with Bret Dorman on the Necromancer podcast.

Bret Dorman (Necromancer, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Bret Dorman was forged in the frost-bound realms of Rochester, New York, tempered in the iron winds of Chicago and the marble-shadowed courts of the Greater DC dominion, before casting his banner beneath the blazing sun of Austin, Texas. There he found not only fellowship in the revels of cinema and story, but his fiercest ally and beloved wife, Sonia Santamaria, with whom he roams the wide roads of the world in restless adventure. Though he lends his voice boldly to the chronicles of film with Necromancer Podcast, he is no mere teller of tales — for he has wrought sagas of his own in moving shadow and light, including Godzilla P.I., The World’s Best, and Violence of the Sun. In his hall dwell three cunning feline familiars — Johnny, Tony, and Ringo — and when not questing abroad, he and his companions wage noble battles of wit and strategy in games both tabletop and arcane.

Screener Squad: Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End season 2 review

FRIEREN: BEYOND JOURNEY’S END SEASON 2 REVIEW

Jonathan Larson once pondered how one would measure a year. Cups of coffee, sunsets, laughter, strife? Regardless, a year is five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes. Frieren, and elf, by this measure is approximately five hundred twenty five million six hundred thousand minutes. Give or take an hour. The anime streaming service Crunchyroll presents season two of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. Frieren the elf mage continues her quest with mage apprentice Fern and axe wielding warrior Stark in tow. Their destination is the mythical land of Aureole, believed to be the location where souls rest and is known as heaven by the devout and faithful. Decades ago, Himel the Hero defeated the demon lord and freed the land from his tyrannical clutches. Frieren was the mage in that hero’s party. After Himel death, Frieren realizes that though their time together was short it was full of the best times of her long life and she wants to talk with the deceased Himel one last time. Bradly, Rhett, and Neal Fowler discuss the journey beyond the end of adventures after the fighting is done and the rest begins. Also they discuss if the x should be pronounced in Hunter X Hunter and debate if Bradly has proven that naivete is something certain folks just don’t grow out of.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad Boss, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and maybe even providing some comments of his own.

Rhett O’Hara (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Trash in the Can)

Rhett O’Hara has really been looking forward to writing this “about me”. He blames movies for a lot of things in his life. He blames seeing Batman Returns as a child for his interest in all things goth and camp. He blames seeing Akira at far too young of an age for his interest in films that dare to venture into the weirder side of things. He blames Midsommar for never visiting Sweden. Rhett has lived in Austin for a couple of decades, so he can speak fondly of the old days of renting DVDs from I Luv Video (Tetsuo the Iron Man left a mark) and buying peculiar documentaries (The Nomi Song, Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist) from Waterloo Video. Rhett also remembers reading an “about me” that stuck with him a few years back. Time continued and he felt a constant need to share “about me” as well. It wasn’t a voice telling him to do this but something akin to the feeling of knowing that someone is watching you without ever actually seeing that person. Rhett has been anxious and is only just now feeling a sense of relief writing this. He feels selfish though, knowing that this will continue on to the next host; the desire…. the urge…. no….the need to pass along a message that has existed ever since humanity started sharing thoughts in a written form. You must understand that he had no choice in this matter. Rhett is truly sorry for this, but he’s every bit of a pawn as you are now. Rhett is also contractually obligated to let you know that he has been a guest on the hit podcast Trash in the Can.

Neal Fowler

Born and raised in Austin, Neal has a lifelong passion for movies, anime video games, and media analysis and discourse. He has been writing film reviews for his personal blogs and social media for over five years and is now contributing to The Afternoon Tune on YouTube and OneofUs.net. He appreciates great film and art no matter the genre, budget, or form it takes. While not reviewing movies, he enjoys reading comic books, hiking the outdoors, and indulging in good food. Remember one thing though: he’s Batman.
