MS.MARVEL SERIES REVIEW

This seventh Disney Plus MCU series is based on one of Marvel’s newer comic hero success stories, the teenager Kamala Khan. A huge fan of the Avengers and more specifically, Captain Marvel, Kamala dreams of what seems to be the impossible, becoming a hero herself. But, as it turns out she’s got more going on in her genes than just human DNA. When she receives in the mail a wrist bangle from her grandmother in Pakistan, suddenly she has to cope with new sparkly, stretchy powers and a bunch of new folks coming into her life telling her that the history of her family leaving Pakistan is not exactly what she has been told. But now that she’s Ms. Marvel (I mean, eventually) with great power…yada yada. Brightly colored, infused with a sense of teen fun, Ms. Marvel stands out in the MCU Disney shows for Chris, Harmoni, Tessa, and Sarah. Listen to what they had to say about it here.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Tessa Morrison (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Unstabletop Gamers)

Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. Wrote and contributed to website and magazine Strange Kids Club for five years reviewing films, video games, and Halloween candy. Co-hosted a Public Access show called Ladies of Fandom. Previously guested on podcasts Blood Over Texas, Threequel Club, Trash in the Can, Retro Movie Roundtable, and Nerds with Mics.

Sarah Jane (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Sarah Jane was born and raised in Southern California but currently calls Austin, TX her home. She’s seen over 5,700 movies so far with zero plans on stopping. She has a penchant for all things exploitation, and she loves Godzilla with all her heart. Her favorite films are Deep Red, Le Samourai, and Miller’s Crossing. When she isn’t watching movies, she’s busy herding her four cats, her husband, and her 11-year-old kiddo. RESIDENT EVIL SERIES REVIEW

As if Covid wasn’t enough, it seems like Umbrella Corp. has decided to break out some of it’s old “hits” and repackage them. Remember that place called Raccoon City? Umbrella blew it up because they caused the apocalypse with the T Virus. So what’s a trillion-dollar company to do? Just walk away from that research? No, they double down and open up “New Raccoon City”, in South Africa. Then, they start producing a new drug called “JOY.” I’m sure they go through the proper channels of testing and study before releasing it. I’m absolutely sure everything will be fine this time and nothing will go wrong…. *hold for awkward silence.* Of course things will go wrong, and it’s because a bunch of whiney/moody teenagers, Jade and Billie Wesker, decide that it’s a great idea to break into a Umbrella Corporation lab and play fetch with a zombie dog. Of course, Billie gets bit and now she has 72 hours until she turns… or will she? Billie and Jade are Weskers after all. Joining us on this gross pig-out are Jena, Lewayne, and Chad. There was a lot to say on this one folks… we had to cut 5 mins out.

MOLOCH MOVIE REVIEW

Ah, Holland, the land of tulips, higher scores in all measures of quality of life than the U.S. and… generational curses? Betriek (Sallie Harmsen), a widowed mother, who lives in a village near the edge of a peat bog, is surprised one night to discover an intruder in the home she shares with her parents. His appearance seems to coincide with a nearby archeological dig that has just uncovered several bog bodies – all women, and all with vertically slit throats. Soon, a young girl gives her a mysterious message in an elevator, Betriek’s daughter draws a picture of a terrifying woman, the kids in the village put on a festival pageant about a legendary murder that might tie into the events in Betriek’s life, and then things get really weird. Wright takes a trip overseas, accompanied by Chad and Lewayne, as they try to unravel Nico van den Brink’s newest film, Moloch, which streams on Shudder July 21. The guys discuss folk horror, progressive children’s plays, sugar packets, and whether this flick is a hit, or should be sacrificed to some dark entity in a nearby bog.

Spawning from the sick minds of Dave Brockie (Lead Singer) and Hunter Jackson (Filmmaker), GWAR has been decapitating heads and squirting blood in audiences faces for over 30 years, starting our malicious plight in Richmond Virginia, during the early 80’s. GWAR has gone through many phases in life, like puberty. And just like puberty, some people will get hurt, embarrassed, and maybe even die. Bare minimum, you’ll have blood, puke, and semen everywhere… Join Chadderous and his fellow bandmates; Wright The Balls of Death, Ryan Maximus, and Marco the Mighty! Are we a band or are we an art collective? Either way, we will destroy all who do not listen to this podcast!

Madelynne Fontenot (Deliberations of Doom, Highly Suspect Reviews)

Madelynne is a bayou-sourced, Seattle-born Austinite babe. Raised a nerd since birth, she gets very excited about science, does her best to know a little bit about everything, and is fluent in both English and French. When not at her day job, Madelynne spends most of her time trying to catch up on TV series that she has yet to finish because she keeps starting them from the beginning, snuggling her two miniature dachshunds, glaring at watercolor paintings she will eventually finish, and deciding whether to play Animal Crossing or World of Warcraft, all of this usually with a sour beer or glass of wine in-hand. She has an obsession with all things iridescent and holographic, and you’d never know it by the way she dresses, but her favorite color is in fact pink, and not black. She has had a very book-oriented life up to this point and is on a journey to expand her movie horizons.

Born and raised in Texas, Alan Galinsky is a lifetime movie fan. As a youth, he would rent multiple movies every weekend and go to the theater for the latest releases, and that pace has remained steady. When Alan isn’t watching movies, you can find him talking about movies. When he’s not talking about movies, you can find him playing music in the band Delicate Boys.

Drew Tinnin (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Deliberations of Doom)

Drew Tinnin is a Rondo Award nominated interviewer and critic who has worked at SiriusXM’s Fangoria Radio and Fangoria magazine in NYC, as well as the London-based Dazed Digital. Currently a regular contributor to the Dread Central Network, he’s excited to join up with some old friends and other film fans on One of Us as a new contributor to Screener Squad.

NOPE MOVIE REVIEW

Writer/Director Jordan Peele returns with his third feature film horror movie, Nope. Reuniting with the star of his debut feature Get Out, Daniel Kaluuya plays OJ Haywood. He and his sister Em (Keke Palmer) in the wake of their father’s sudden death, are left to run his ranch where they raise horses to train to be in films, tv shows, and commercials. Money is tight and OJ finds himself having to ‘temporarily’ sell off horses to the local wild-west attraction “Jupiter’s Claim” run by former child tv star Jupe (Steven Yeun) and his wife. But an unusual solution may have poked it’s huge grey head up when OJ and Em start realizing there appears to be a flying saucer that has been circling their ranch and hiding just out of sight. If they could just get it on film….. Unfortunately for them, this situation is much more dark and disturbing than it initially appears to be and things go sideways pretty fast. Chris, Frank, Sarah, and Marco took in this spectacle and have plenty to say about it and what it has to say about the nature of spectacle.

PERSUASION MOVIE REVIEW

For an author who only ever wrote six novels, Jane Austen’s work has seen a LOT of adaptations. Some have been award winning films, like the 2005 Pride & Prejudice or 1995 Oscar winning Sense & Sensibility, while others have been modern reimaginings, like Clueless or Bridget Jones’ Diary. Time and again, people return to Austen’s work because she wrote such relatable and charming characters, particular her thoroughly wonderful women. Her wit and sass has remained relevant for 200 years. Heck, she basically invented the rom-com. It’s no surprise when another version of one of her acclaimed novels is made into a film, and Sarah Jane, Melina, Bradley, and T.C. sit down to discuss the latest Austen rom-com-dram adaptation, Netflix’s Persuasion. Anne Elliot (played by Dakota Johnson) is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities and of course plenty of wit. When Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis) a dashing captain in the Navy and the one that got away crashes back into her life, Anne must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances. But how does this new entry into the Austenverse compare to the multitude of others? The Squad doesn’t hold back when it comes to matters of the heart.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. THE BOYS SEASON 3 REVIEW

Amazon Prime’s hit satirical takedown of superheroes based on the Garth Ennis/Darick Robertson comic, The Boys is back for its third year. The fallout from last season’s finale sees Vought International on immediate damage control following the reveal of Stormfront’s Nazi identity and rehabilitation of their golden boy Homelander, who is slowly becoming more unhinged behind the scenes by the day. Meanwhile, our titular Boys led as usual by Billy Butcher are handed a secret weapon in hopes of finally bringing down Homelander and Vought as a whole in the long-thought dead supe Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles). Our super team of critics consisting of Rose, Dogget, Jordan, and Eliot discuss what they consider to be the best season yet and have a big old Herogasm it further in their spoilers discussion.

A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. Soaked in the soggy rains of Seattle, Eliot developed a love of sci-fi, movies, cartoons, heavy metal, and all of geekdom. Pursuing his passion for the written word, he got his BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He has since worked exclusively in the foodservice industry, like any liberal arts major worth their salt. Eliot wiles away the hours listening to movie reviews, writing his epic sci-fi novel, and consuming as much media as possible. THE DEER KING MOVIE REVIEW

In the years following a vicious war in a far off land, wild dogs that once carried the deadly Black Wolf Fever continue to roam free, threatening to unleash a pandemic on the people of this fantasy world. While one half of the kingdom wears masks to protect themselves from the virus, the other half doesn’t think they can get it. When a pack of dogs race through a mine, Van, an enslaved former soldier, and a young girl named Yuna are both bitten, but manage to escape as the sole survivors of the attack. Finally free, Van and Yuna seek out a simple, peaceful existence in the countryside. But as the deadly disease once again runs rampant, they find themselves at the crossroads of a struggle much larger than any one nation. Bradly, Chad, Matt, and T.C. discuss this beautifully animated and certainly not at all timely fantasy adventure based on a series of fantasy books by the Japanese author Nahoko Uehashi.

Chad Halvorsen (Screener Squad)

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. Matt Foster is a stand up comic, podcaster, and movie critic currently living in the greater Salt Lake City area.
