SECRET HEADQUARTERS MOVIE REVIEW

If you’ve exhausted your current superhero content after consuming Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, Thor Four the Fourth Thor Love and Thor-der, available She-Hulk episodes, three seasons of The Boys, The Boys: Diabolical, Invincible, DC’s League of Super Pets, The Batman, DragonBall Super: Super Hero, Morbius, Catwoman Hunted, Green Lantern: Fear My Power, Teen Titans Go! & DC Super Hero Girls: Mayhem in the Multiverse, and Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening, and you’re anxiously awaiting the upcoming superhero releases of Black Adam, Wakanda Forever, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Aquaman (Amber Heard is still somehow in this) and The Flash movie is still coming out, but they canceled Batgirl, and you just absolutely need to see something with a CGI superhero fighting the villain version of himself with the same powers, AND you’ve run through all the back catalog of superhero content on Netflix, HBO, Hulu, and Amazon, then Paramount Plus has the movie for you! Jack Kincaid (Owen Wilson) is The Guard, a superhero chosen by an alien artifact to inherit its powers and save the world, but his hero duties cause him to neglect his parental duties to his son Charlie (Walker Scobell), driving a wedge between them. When Charlie stays at Jack’s house for his birthday, he invites his friends Berger, Lizzie, and Maya over, where they find Jack’s underground lair and find out his secret identity. Meanwhile, a weapons CEO named Ansel Argon (Michael Peña) wants to use The Guard’s power source for his own sinister schemes. When the villains attack, the kids must team up to defend the secret headquarters and save the world. Harmoni, Sarah Jane, T.C. and Chad answer the call of the One Of Us signal to explain how perfectly fine this movie is.

DAY SHIFT MOVIE REVIEW

Vampires. A movie monster that has seen hundreds of films, TV shows, and productions in the century plus of cinema and television. Dracula himself is one of the most adapted fictional characters of all time, second only to Sherlock Holmes. But it’s been some time since we’ve had a major vampire film in the mainstream. Maybe now is the time for a resurgence of one of the most tired and exhausted subjects in fiction. It’s been a decade since Twilight ended. Maybe pop culture is ready for the blood suckers to rise once more. And hey, maybe a Jamie Foxx action horror comedy vehicle directed by the stunt coordinator from John Wick is just the right movie to do it. Well… probably not. This movie is on Netflix, This’ll come and go with little to no impact on the zeitgeist. But SHOULD it have an impact? Jamie Foxx plays Bud Joblonski, a hard-working, blue-collar dad who just wants to provide a good life for his wife and quick-witted 10-year-old daughter. He cleans pools in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, but that mundane job is in fact a front for his real source of income: hunting and killing vampires. But hold up, this isn’t the tired cliche story of a solo hero on a mission hunter with some dark past he’s avenging. No, Bud is part of a massive organized vampire hunting union that is riddled with bureaucracy, paperwork, and because of a few mishaps on the job, he’s assigned a pencil pushing Union case worker in Dave Franco who is forced to follow him around on his slaying jobs. He has one week to collect as many teeth as he can to cash them in for the money he needs to keep his wife from leaving with his daughter, while a major vampire queenpin, Karla Souza as real estate mogul Audrey San Fernando, sets her sights on killing Bud. Rae, Harmoni, Chad, and T.C. sharpen their crossbows, and holy water to decide the fate of Day Shift.

BREAKING MOVIE REVIEW

This is a true story. The morning of July 7, 2017, a 33-year-old black man and Marine Corps veteran named Brian Brown Easley walked into a suburban Wells Fargo Bank on Windy Hill Road in Atlanta, Georgia. He wore a grey hoodie and carried a backpack. He walked up to the teller, asked to withdraw a few dollars, and then handed her a simple note that said: I have a bomb.” He never raised his voice. He never hurt anyone. He wasn’t robbing the bank. He wanted the manager to clear the building out and call 911. He wanted to speak to a negotiator. He had one demand: He wanted the $892 he was owed in disability from the Department of Veterans Affairs. By the end of the day, Brian was dead. John Boyega plays Lance Corporal Easely in this very small but very poignant film, and proves that he is one hell of a fine actor. Jena, Chad, Wright, and T.C. have a solemn conversation in praise of this film and with heartbreaking respect to this very sad and all-too-real American story.

RISE OF THE TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: THE MOVIE

The year is 2044. An alien invasion has conquered the planet. In a last ditch effort to save the last vestiges of humanity, a young man is sent backwards in time to the point where the apocalypse started, and find the allies that will ultimately save the world. He would find those mighty warriors in NYC. In the sewers. Eating pizza. Did I mention they were giant reptiles? Cowabunga! Our our favorite teenage mutant ninja turtles are back in yet another heroic adventure in this Netflix animated feature. A movie continuation of the cartoon series that originally aired on Nickelodeon, the fan favorites of Casey Jones, April O’Neil, Master Splinter, and, of course, our favorite heroes-in-a-half-shell must figure out how to work together as they take on the evil invading Krang. Our reviewers, Mindy, T.C., and Chad take out their action figures and pizza shooters, and muse over the newest incarnation of this beloved comic book IP. Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Ryan Aleck Hill (Screener Squad, Video and Audio editor)

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. WESTWORLD SEASON 4 REVIEW

The newest latest season of Westworld gets back to the gestating ideas of season one without skimping on the action of season three. Every human cell is replaced after seven years. The fourth season picks up the story exactly seven years later, a telling sign for the future of humanity. It’s the year 2060. You’re dead. They’re not. Yet. Drew Tinnin is a Rondo Award nominated interviewer and critic who has worked at SiriusXM’s Fangoria Radio and Fangoria magazine in NYC, as well as the London-based Dazed Digital. Currently a regular contributor to the Dread Central Network, he’s excited to join up with some old friends and other film fans on One of Us as a new contributor to Screener Squad.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). SPIN ME ROUND MOVIE REVIEW

Writer/director Jeff Baena, whose previous work includes the comedies The Little Hours and Life after Beth, returns to transport us to the enchanted Italian countryside where romance and wonder lie in wait…well, that’s certainly what all the travelogues say, right? Starring and co-written by Alison Brie, Spin Me Round tells the story of Amber, a young manager for an Italian chain restaurant (essentially Olive Garden) whose life takes an unexpected turn when she is accepted to an employee training program in Italy. Yearning for adventure and the possibility of true love, Amber is soon introduced to the company’s dashing and mysterious CEO Nick Martucci (Alessandro Nivola) who may just be the man of Amber’s dreams. But upon stepping into his world of yachts, villas and lavish parties, Amber soon comes to suspect that all may not be as it seems. If this sounds like the plot of your typical harlequin romantic thriller, trust me…the movie knows that. Boasting an all-star cast including Aubrey Plaza, Molly Shannon, Tim Heidecker and Zach Woods, Spin Me Round is as wacky and hilarious as one would expect with such a comedy lineup. But does it pack the satirical punch of Baena’s previous work? Well, that’s what Brad, Rose, Melina and Frank came together to discuss.

Originally hailing from Austin then Houston, Rose has been an avid movie and TV fanatic pretty much since birth. She spends spending her days watching Star Trek reruns, 60’s spy fiction, and Audrey Hepburn movies with her beloved minion (see: dog Riley). She also occasionally dabbles in comedy, screenwriting, as well as graphic and interior design. Rose has been contributing to One of Us since 2019 as a member of the Screener Squad, as well as making regular appearances on Eye on the Prize during awards season. Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

BETTER CALL SAUL SEASON 6 REVIEW

14 years ago, Vince Gilligan and his wonderful crew introduced TV audiences around the world to the Breaking Bad Universe and with the sixth and final season of Better Call Saul it finally comes to a close. At first, the kooky, over-the-top lawyer Saul Goodman seemed to be nothing more than simple comic relief in Breaking Bad, but creators Peter Gould and Vince Gilligan masterfully showed the humanity and inner turmoil of the man underneath–Jimmy McGill, over the last six seasons. In this final season, Jimmy McGill and Kim Wexler plan to pull one big scam out of spite on their rival Howard Hamlin. What they don’t realize is how it will irrevocably change their lives and their relationship forever. If you can’t already tell, this crew really enjoyed it. You could even say that it was quite a ride. In this spoiler-free review, Rose, Wright, Bradly, and Ryan dive into Jimmy’s last dance and don their gaudiest, most colorful formal wear for the occasion. It’s showtime!

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. Wrote and contributed to website and magazine Strange Kids Club for five years reviewing films, video games, and Halloween candy. Co-hosted a Public Access show called Ladies of Fandom. Soaked in the soggy rains of Seattle, Eliot developed a love of sci-fi, movies, cartoons, heavy metal, and all of geekdom. Pursuing his passion for the written word, he got his BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He has since worked exclusively in the foodservice industry, like any liberal arts major worth their salt. Eliot wiles away the hours listening to movie reviews, writing his epic sci-fi novel, and consuming as much media as possible.
