SICK MOVIE REVIEW

Writer Kevin Williamson (Scream) returns to horror with this pandemic-set slasher. Parker (Gideon Adlon) and her best friend Miri (Bethlehem Million) during a break from college, get away together to a fancy rich-parents lake house way away from civilization. It’s 2020 and COVID is in full swing so a little BFF isolation is just what the holiday calls for. Unfortunately for them, a masked intruder is set on invading their privacy and wants both of them dead. This is a tight and lean, Hollywood-slick slasher that knows exactly how to deliver the goods. I can only suspect it’s lack of media push is because some of the COVID related story elements could be controversial or upsetting to folks who have personally dealt with the fallout of the pandemic. But if you think you’re ready, check it out (or just listen to Wright and Chris on the review, although we won’t spoil the surprises for you).

HELLRAISER MOVIE REVIEW

In this new reboot (or maybe requel; further installments will tell for sure) Hulu got their hands on the Clive Barker money machine of Hellraiser. Not just fooling around, they got the director of 2021’s indie horror smash The Night House to take the helm. The story this time follows Riley (Odessa A’zion) a troubled young addict who gets ahold of the box and falls afoul of it’s demonic pain angels, the Cenobites. Multiple draggings to hell ensue. Wright and Chris take a look at this and decide where it falls in the Hellraiser rankings.

INFESTATION FANTASTIC FEST 2022: UNICORN WARS

In this Spanish-French animated film from creator Alberto Vázquez, the world is one ravaged by war. Adorable Care-Bear like Teddy bears have been battling for years inside the Magic Forest with the Unicorns. The story follows a new group of recruits who first suffer through basic training, then are sent out prematurely into the woods to look for a missing troop. With a Ralph Bakshi look and an Apocalypse Now/Full Metal Jacket story (but, even more f’d up), this is one animated movie not for kids at all. Maybe not for people with any kid left in them. Chris and Wright look at, admire, and express shock at this disturbing Fantastic Fest entry in their review.

INFESTATION FANTASTIC FEST 2022: SMOKING CAUSES COUGHING

At this point I think I can fairly say that our favorite absurdist weirdo is French director Quentin Dupieux. He came to our attention with his 2010 horror-comedy film Rubber about a sentient tire killing people. From there, it’s just gotten stranger. His latest film, Smoking Causes Coughing, is making the fest rounds right now and if you’re a fan of his comedy, you won’t be disappointed. The story follows a super-team called Tobacco Force (they use the dangerous chemicals in cigarettes to blast baddies and give them explosive cancers). Their boss, a disgusting TMNT Splinter-like rat thing that for some reason every woman finds irresistible, orders them to take a vacation for a week in the woods and together, they tell each other ‘spooky’ stories around the campfire. In a sense, this is an absurdist anthology film. In another, who f**king knows? But if his brand of horror-sci-fi-total absurdity is to your taste, you’ll probably feel like Chris and Wright did and lap this up.

INFESTATION FANTASTIC FEST 2022: PROJECT WOLF HUNTING

This South Korean action horror film begins with a huge cast of extremely dangerous criminals being loaded onto a large freight liner for transport. Although there’s a lot of cops going with them, you know this is gonna turn into Con-Boat at some point. But the thing is, deep in the bowels of this boat, there’s a secret extra prisoner being transported as well. Before you know it, everyone has a countdown to death at the hands of this thing. Wright and Chris (and pretty much everyone else who saw Project Wolf Hunting) called it Con-Air on a boat meets Silent Rage but with a good deal of Resident Evil thrown in the mix. Listen to them do their review and decide for yourself if this sounds like your cup of tea.

INFESTATION FANTASTIC FEST 2022: MARVEL’S WEREWOLF BY NIGHT

Composer Michael Giacchino steps behind the camera to helm this one-off special adaptation of Marvel’s Werewolf By Night. Filmed in black and white with a very Universal Monster Movie vibe, the story follows a gathering of monster hunters called together to decide who will inherit the powerful Bloodstone after its previous owner has passed on. To win it, they must defeat a monster that has been captured, and each other, but what they don’t know is that one of them is a monster himself and isn’t there for the stone. Gael García Bernal leads this fun cast in an atypical MCU venture that hopefully is a sign of things to come. Wright and Chris both howl at the moon in tribute to this fun romp.

INFESTATION FANTASTIC FEST 2022: BONES AND ALL

Maestro Luca Guadagnino made the Suspiria remake and must have decided he dug on the horror thing because he’s back at it again with Bones And All. The story follows Maren (Taylor Russell) an 18 year old girl suddenly on her own because her father just can’t take care of her anymore. Mainly because of her very specific and horrible needs. She’s a cannibal and not like a “I’m crazy and want to eat people” kind but the “I biologically have to eat people because I’m literally a kind of being that requires it” kind. Hitting the road, she decides to track down her mother, long missing and maybe dead, in order to find out more about herself and why she is the way she is. Along the way she discovers ‘eaters’ are not only out there, but they can smell each other from a good distance. She encounters the creepy but helpful Sully (Mark Rylance) but moves on until she meets Lee (Timothée Chalamet). The two have an ‘eat-cute’ and travel together in the quest. Chris and Wright loved this and think it’s not only one of the best of the festival but one of Guadagnino’s best films to boot.

INFESTATION FANTASTIC FEST 2022: BLOOD FLOWER

This new Malaysian horror film starts off setting your expectations for some seriously dark stuff. And then it doesn’t disappoint throughout, getting more and more ‘they went there’. It follows a teen boy Iqbal who shares psychic abilities with his mother. Their family is paid to deal with various entities causing trouble or possessions but on one visit, Mom does not survive the encounter. Left to deal with these visions and powers where he doesn’t have anyone to talk to about them, it’s not long before he and his friends find themselves being tormented by a powerful spirit creature who is killing locals (and his friends) left and right. Can he handle it? Can Wright handle how crazy this movie gets? Listen to him and Chris discussing it and find out.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). John Gholson is a writer and cartoonist with bylines at Movies.com, Moviefone, and Vice and illustration work for GQ and Fandango. As an actor, John can be seen in Zero Charisma, Hidden America With Jonah Ray, and The Suplex Duplex Complex. He writes and performs sketch comedy regularly at The New Movement Theater. John currently lives in Austin with his beloved comic book collection and a cat named after Peter Cushing.
