SHARPER MOVIE REVIEW

Ah, I see you’re curious about the art of the con. Well, let me tell you, it’s a delicate dance between charm and deception. And the best con films aren’t just flash and style, they’re about twisting an audience through a thrilling ride, often dealing with characters you come to know but rarely are able to trust. Films such as these leave you questioning everything and everyone. Nothing is as it seems. But while this genre may evoke the bouncy, flashy fun of the Oceans movies, Sharper is much more in line with Hitchcock’s Notorious or Mamet’s The Spanish Prisoner. This is the type of drama that may have you trying to keep up with the intricate webs of lies and deceit. It’s a game of cat and mouse, and like a good con, you never know who’s the cat and who’s the mouse until the very end. Justice Smith plays Tom, a soft-spoken young man who works at an old bookstore. One afternoon, a beautiful young woman named Sandra (Briana Middleton) enters Tom’s shop, and the two have instant chemistry, but as their lives overlap, they fall victim to deceit and distrust. Melina, Bradly, and T.C. attempt to weave their way through this review revealing just enough to help you decide if you might want to trust that an Apple+/A24 team-up is worth your time.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. COCAINE BEAR MOVIE REVIEW

It’s a bear, but on cocaine! Now take that sentence, reorganize it 30 times, and you’ve pretty much got the movie Cocaine Bear. There, I just saved you 15 bucks. But I know, I know…“IT’S A BEAR, BUT ON COCAINE” you’re saying to yourselves. “I’ve just gotta see that”. I guess the studio that made this knew that too as the release for this went from extremely limited to very wide once the internet got ahold of the concept. I just want you to ask yourselves, do you remember how gaga you went when the ads for Snakes on a Plane first came out? Do you remember how you felt when you saw the film? Your results may vary, I suppose, to this film about A BEAR, BUT ON COCAINE but Chris’, Mars’, and Marco’s did not. Listen to their review to hear more about the bear….ON COCAINE.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. 80 FOR BRADY MOVIE REVIEW

Ah, 2017. Such a different time. A world before an ongoing pandemic, a world of Spider-man Homecoming and Beyonce pregnant with twins. A time when four elderly best friends and massive fans of the New England Patriots, particularly the team’s star quarterback Tom Brady, decided to celebrate the Patriots’ victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game by making the wild trip to Houston and Super Bowl LI. 80 for Brady is the sort of based on a true story movie that brings a smile to a person’s face, that is if you aren’t a cynical jerk just looking to be mad at a movie starring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, and Sally Field that was clearly not made for you. Lucky for this review, Frank, Melina, Ben, and T.C. are more than happy to share their enjoyment of this breezy road trip comedy. And why shouldn’t they have fun with it? These legendary women have a combined two centuries, several Oscars, Tonys, and Emmys, and the comedy chops necessary to tell this lovely tale about football, Tom Brady, and confronting the indignities of aging and the limits of mortality.

A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA

I never expected the Ant-Man movies to make it to three, even with Paul Rudd’s inexhaustible charm. I DEFINITELY never expected the third film to be the one that opens wide the gates on the major villain for the Multiverse Saga. But here we are. The whole ant-family reunites and then gets sucked down into the Quantum Realm as Scott (Rudd), Hope (Evangeline Lilly), Hank (Michael Douglas), Janet (Michelle Pfeiffer), and Cassie (Kathryn Newton) have to contend with a seriously psychedelic under-universe, tons of crazy aliens, and the time/parallel dimension traveller Kang (Jonathan Majors) who was initially introduced as an alternate variant in the Disney Plus show Loki. Here’s where the MCU shows its hand of what to expect going forward through Phases 5 & 6. But is it a heartfelt father-daughter bonding film AND a crazy CGI fest? John and Chris continue their dive into the depths of digital with their look at some more home releases. We see if one of last year’s most maligned wide-release sci-fi films is as bad as all that. John Gholson is a writer and cartoonist with bylines at Movies.com, Moviefone, and Vice and illustration work for GQ and Fandango. KNOCK AT THE CABIN MOVIE REVIEW

Are you ready for a new M. Night film? After Old I still can’t believe people give him the benefit of the doubt anymore, but here we are. And he’s scored a pretty big horror property, the adaptation of horror novelist Paul Tremblay’s The Cabin at the End of the World, a book that was getting tons of praise in horror literary circles. The cabin, which of course is in the woods, contains two married men and their daughter just having a getaway, when there’s a titular knock. It’s Dave Bautista and three other folks who are there to as gently as possible hold this family hostage and convince them that if one of them doesn’t choose willingly to kill themselves, the entire world is going to end. Hard sell. Chris, Wright, and Alan review this film and all had very different feelings about M. Night before they even saw this movie. Check it out to see if anything changes for them.

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. THERE’S SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE CHILDREN MOVIE REVIEW

Let’s face it everyone… and I’m including both parents and people without children… kids are f**king creepy. They’re like 1/3 the size of an adult and have high pitched voices. You think that would be adorable, but it’s not. There’s Something Wrong With The Children doesn’t bury the lead with its title. After a hike in the woods, Lucy and Spencer come back to camp with something “wrong”with them. Parents Ellie (Amanda Crew) and Thomas (Carlos Santos) don’t notice anything, but their friends Ben (Zach Gilford) and Margaret (Alisha Wainwright) do. This creates a rift between the couples… is that a metaphor for marriage/kids? I’m not telling you! You just have to watch the movie. It’s not that bad, but it’s not great either. Rae, Lewayne, and Chad throw down their opinions on this Paramount VOD release.

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

YOU PEOPLE MOVIE REVIEW

You People (directed by Kenya Barris, and written by Jonah Hill/Barris) is a rom com about Ezra (Jonah Hill) and Amira (Lauren London), and how they must navigate each other’s families before they get married. Ezra is a dude down with the culture but grew up in privilege with his parents Arnold (David Duchovny) and Shelley (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), while Amira comes from a proud, black, family (Eddie Murphy as Akbar and Nia Long as Fatima) who are confused in her choice in Ezra. TC, Ryan, and Chad sat down today to talk race relations in America. Now I know what you’re thinking “why are these three Twinkies talking about this culture?” Chad would respond with, “good question, I maybe should have done more do-diligence on casting for this episode.” Either way, there’s still voices to be heard in this movie that are worth listening to.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. MAYBE I DO MOVIE REVIEW

There comes a time in every cisgendered, white male’s, life where he has to settle down with an equally boring cisgendered, white, woman. At least, in this universe, the woman is expecting a lifelong commitment, but that comes to halt when Allen (Luke Bracey) intercepts the bouquet at a wedding, creating a rift in what seems to be a pretty solid relationship with Michelle (Emma Roberts). Michelle wants commitment but Allen isn’t sure. You soon see why when you meet Allen’s parents, played by Susan Sarandon and William H. Macy, who have nothing but contempt in each other, but agree the best thing in their life is Allen. On Michelle’s side, you have Richard Gere and Diane Keaton who are just sort of there, but their firm commitment to love, marriage, two becoming one… you can see why Michelle is wedding obsessed. Anyways, a big ol’ wrench is thrown in when the couple decides that the parents should meet. Based off a play by Michael Jacobs (who also wrote/directed the film), Maybe I Do is very telegraphed, but has some shining moments. Kim, Sarah Jane, Frank, and Chad discuss tropes and maybe figure out why Richard Gere looks so fucking tired in this.
