FRIENDSHIP MOVIE REVIEW

So, this is why men shouldn’t have friends. Friendship is the new film by Andrew DeYoung starring the ever chaotic Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd in an absurdist comedy that delves into the nightmare territory of a metaphorical (and occasionally literal) sandbox and just let them weird each other out for 90 minutes. Craig Waterman (Robinson) is a marketing executive prepping to sell his family home with his wife, Tami (Kate Mara) who’s recently survived cancer. As a wrongly delivered package arrives for their new neighbor, Craigs drops off the package but then meets Austin (Rudd) who plays it welcoming, cool, and thoughtful. Struck by meet-cute, Craig and Austin strike a quick friendship even with Craig’s odd outbursts defying social norms and situations. As Craig is introduced to Austin’s friend group, things turn sour and needless to say their friendship ends leading to a cringefest that doesn’t let up. Most people could be put off by this style of humor, which is completely understandable, but Robinson’s approach to this type of person is equally off putting and hysterical. With having Rudd as his foil, it’s a delicate line that the first walks to not only entertain, but recoil at the social horror. Wright, Chris, Alan, and Nathan sit in a circle and sing its praises (Chris not so much) and discuss how Friendship may be one of the best films of the year.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Deliberations of Doom)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar and theater management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).

Wright Sulek (The Other Boss, Trash in the Can, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox. As of 2024, Wright has now been inducted into the Austin Film Critics Association as well as co-owns the One of Us network with Chris Cox.

Nathan Flynn (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

Nathan Flynn is the resident goofball of One of Us. Net, often found overly caffeinated, slightly stoned, and ready to unleash the hottest takes imaginable. As the resident Letterboxd Lunatic, his movie opinions are as bold as his love for Top Gun: Maverick — a film he considers less of a movie and more of a religion. When he’s not passionately defending his latest cinematic obsession, Nathan manages a comedy club in downtown Austin, where he’s somehow avoided being heckled… so far. Around here, he’s usually the punching bag, but hey, someone’s gotta do it.

Alan Galinsky (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Deliberations of Doom)

Born and raised in Texas, Alan Galinsky is a lifetime movie fan. As a youth, he would rent multiple movies every weekend and go to the theater for the latest releases, and that pace has remained steady. When Alan isn’t watching movies, you can find him talking about movies. When he’s not talking about movies, you can find him playing music in the band Delicate Boys.

FINAL DESTINATION: BLOODLINES REVIEW

2025 is surprisingly turning out to be a big year for horror, and while returns to franchises that haven’t had a new entry in well over a decade certainly hasn’t consistently had gold results, we always hold out hope that a formerly great series can regain its glory once more. We didn’t expect one to surpass that glory. Final Destination: Bloodlines (why do so many late horror series entries have ‘bloodlines’ in the title?) is the sixth in this series. If you don’t know, there’s no masked killer, no vengeful spirit. All the entries in the series follow people who SHOULD have died according to a completely unanthpomorphasized Death, really just the ‘universe’s plan’, but due to one person having a premonition of a huge disaster that takes them all out in usually over-the-top grisly fashions, they all cheat Death. But cheating Death is not that easy. One at a time, in the order they WOULD have died, Death takes them, usually in a rube goldbergian way, so that nowhere and nothing is safe. This new tale starts with a woman waking up from a premonition of a horrific tragedy, only it’s not her it’s happening to. Turns out, it was her grandmother, who she’s never met and the family doesn’t talk about, who originally had this vision and kept hundreds of people from dying. After getting clued into what Death was up to by multiple deaths of survivors, she managed to dodge her own death for a long time. But it also made anyone who knew her want nothing to do with her, and it’s hard to blame them as it all sounds like crazy town. Unfortunately for this family though, once she passes on, Death gets back to doing what he does in the order intended. The granddaughter is the only one who MAYBE can figure out how to cheat Death one more time. Chris, Wright, Nathan, and Ben went in with high hopes to this new entry and were genuinely surprised that they were not disappointed.

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. For the rest of his free time, he can be found biking, drinking craft beer, being an amateur photographer, and playing video games by himself or on Twitch. NOT JUST A GOOF REVIEW

Alright, alright, Mickey’s a mouse, Donald’s a duck, Pluto’s a dog. What’s Goofy? If you stand by me and my fellow critics we may not be able to answer that question, but with Disney Plus on the 30th anniversary of A Goofy Movie presenting Not Just a Goof, you will discover a small world of goofy trivia and just how much of a miracle it takes to create any film. In 1995 a young creative team was put to task to use the legacy character Goofy as the father protagonist in a John Hughes-esque feature regarding a road trip to a rock concert. Hours of archived footage are used as a backdrop against Disney animatics for this re-telling of all the stress, anxiety, turmoil, and triumph of creating a new kind of animated Disney Musical. Director Kevin Lima, voice actors Bill Farmer (the voice of Goofy), Jason Marsden (The voice of Goofy’s son Max), and archival footage of Jim Cummings (The voice of Pete and several additional voices), Jeffrey Katzenberg (Studio Head and producer at Disney at the time) and a plethora of other creates give first hand accounts of the disappointing debut yet enduring rise of one of the 90’s most beloved cartoon single fathers. Bradly discusses his first time seeing A Goofy Movie and how his life journey has changed the funny flick into an anniversary viewing family feature, while Ryan and Melina explain how the film has always been a mainstay in their lives. From choreographing the perfect cast to creating Powerline, the goofy movie documentary has something for fans of film and animation alike.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Ryan Aleck Hill (Screener Squad, Video and Audio Editor)

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. You can follow him on Twitter but you’ll probably regret it.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

BLACK MIRROR – USS CALLISTER: INTO INFINITY REVIEW

In this bonus review, Sarah Jane, T.C., and Melina review the feature-length Black Mirror Season 7 episode USS Callister Into Infinity. It has been several months since the events of Black Mirror Season 4, Episode 1, USS Callister. The digitally cloned avatars who make up the crew of the space traveling ship, under the leadership of Captain Nanette Cole (Cristin Milioti), have been surviving in the juggernaut MMORPG “Infinity”, and to eke out their survival among the game’s pay-to-play nature, they take the role of space pirates to rob other players. Because they lack a gamer tag, they are also easy targets for players to try to attack. They realise that, to survive, they need to hack the Infinity servers to carve out a virtual space of their own, but this requires getting back Lt. Walton (Jimmy Simpson) – a digital clone of Callister’s CEO, James Walton – and then using the information Walton knows in order to travel into the “Heart of Infinity” and create this space. BLACK MIRROR SEASON 7 REVIEW

Season Seven of Charlie Brooker’s ongoing dystopian sci-fi anthology series returns with six new episodes and not only a slew of callbacks to some of the best episodes of the past 11 years of the series but also a full-length sequel film to the acclaimed USS Callister. These six episodes explore everything from the shattered and broken health care system, subscription based gaming and endless subscription updates on streaming services (It’s quite amusing how much Brooker mocks the show’s daddy Netflix straight to their digital face), the heartbreak of memories and the lies we tell ourselves, the best/worst case scenario for remaking Casablanca, and the cutthroat world of chocolatiers. This season also brings with it performances from Rashid Jones, Chris O’Dowd, Peter Capaldi, Emma Corrin, Issa Rae, Cristin Milioti, and Paul Giamatti. Sarah Jane and T.C. share their thoughts on the season are while gluttons for punishment who have seen every episode, they were happy to not be as punished by Brooker’s bleek look at the not-too-distant-future.

STAR WARS: TALES OF THE UNDERWORLD REVIEW

Continuing their annual May 4th tradition, LucasFilms has released another 6-episode Star Wars miniseries, adding a new set of animated adventures to their “Tales Of” series. We’ve seen the Jedi and the Empire. This time we follow the galaxy’s criminal underworld – or rather two such characters who embody Star Wars scum and villainy: Asajj Ventress, former assassin and Sith turned mercenary flees with a new ally. And Cad Bane, the notorious, cold hearted bounty hunter, confronts his past when meeting an old friend. Melina, Marco, and T.C. return to the One Of Us cantina to share some blue milk and conversation about the Good, the Cad, and the Ugly.

In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

ANDOR SEASON 2 PART 3 REVIEW

The One Of Us Rebels are getting closer and closer to the Battle of Yavin and the end of the Empire. T.C., Lewayne, Marco, Melina, and Drew gather to discuss the third block of episodes in this acclaimed series as it races toward its inevitable and harrowing crescendo. Cassian returns to Ghorman on the eve of the Empire’s attempt to orchestrate a riot under the guise of quelling unrest. As the atrocities become more and more frequent across the galaxy, Senator Mon Mothma is growing more defiant in the Senate. Her along with Bale Organa, Luthen, Clea, and all the gathering Rebels are nearly ready to launch their opposition of the Empire’s tyranny. Amidst the chaos, Cassian struggles to know if he still has it in him to be a part of the coming war. The personal costs are growing larger, as the Empire’s oppressive machinery grows more fearless and more brazen.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Drew Tinnin (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Deliberations of Doom)

Drew Tinnin is a Rondo Award nominated interviewer and critic who has worked at SiriusXM’s Fangoria Radio and Fangoria magazine in NYC, as well as the London-based Dazed Digital. Currently a regular contributor to the Dread Central Network, he’s excited to join up with some old friends and other film fans on One of Us as a new contributor to Screener Squad.

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox. As of 2024, Wright has now been inducted into the Austin Film Critics Association as well as co-owns the One of Us network with Chris Cox.

Eric Samaniego (Trash in the Can, Highly Suspect Reviews)

Eric is a multi-award show watching, sometimes comedian, sometimes writer that began life as a Muppet and 1930’s screwball comedy obsessed goon and continues to carry a torch for all things felt and funny. With a passion for genre films, poor taste, and whiskey, he and co-conspirator, Wright Sulek, indulge in the best/worst films the world has to offer with One of Us’s podcast, ‘Trash in the Can’. When not podding, Eric works as an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Deliberations of Doom)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar and theater management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BETTE & JOAN? EPISODE 4 – STRAIT-JACKET AND DEAD RINGER

On this episode, we jump in head first (no pun intended) into grande dame guignol cinema and Bette & Joan’s part in helping to establish it. After What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? proved that horror and older actresses were a winning mix, Davis & Crawford wasted no time signing on to a pair of similarly-themed films in 1964 that looked to capitalize on their newfound success. Fellow Cinapse contributor Dan Tabor joins me as we revisit Strait-Jacket starring Joan Crawford and Dead Ringer starring Bette Davis, two titles that offered up twists on the Baby Jane blueprint and helped create a new sub-genre of film.

HAVOC MOVIE REVIEW

A good house is built on a solid foundation with primo materials and a foreman that knows that hard work and honest labor with no cut corners will create not just a home for one generation but a domicile for future generations. What if that foreman was a crooked, backstabbing politician whose platform was to clean up all the rot and mold in the foundation of that house. Only, the rot and mold is permeating from his own soul. Written and directed by action super-director Gareth Evans (The Raid), Havoc puts us alongside a crooked homicide cop named Walker (Tom Hardy) who owes the sketchy politician Lawrence Beaumont (Forest Whitaker) a favor. When he calls it in to have Walker save his son from gang war retribution, it’s not going to be an easy task. A major crime family and his cronies have been gunned down during a cocaine and cocktails party and homicide detective Vincent (Timothy Olyphant) is hot on the trail of suspects Charlie (Justin Cornwell) and Mia (Quelin Sepulveda). Charlie, the son in question, and his girlfriend must elude the police and avoid the bullets of the gang with the help of Walker in order to reveal the true mastermind behind the Havoc! Bradly, Nate, and Rae put on their best funny voices to discuss Tom Hardy’s new and familiar acting choices, discuss and compare the writing talents of Mr. Evans juxtaposed against his eye for gore and mayhem, and name drop a couple of other movies that may or may not be much better than this one.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. Nathan Flynn is the resident goofball of One of Us. Net, often found overly caffeinated, slightly stoned, and ready to unleash the hottest takes imaginable. As the resident Letterboxd Lunatic, his movie opinions are as bold as his love for Top Gun: Maverick — a film he considers less of a movie and more of a religion. When he’s not passionately defending his latest cinematic obsession, Nathan manages a comedy club in downtown Austin, where he’s somehow avoided being heckled… so far. Around here, he’s usually the punching bag, but hey, someone’s gotta do it.
