Eric Samaniego is a multi-award show watching, sometimes comedian, sometimes writer who began life as a Muppet and 1930s screwball comedy obsessed goon and still carries a torch for all things felt, funny, and a little bit unhinged. With a passion for genre films, poor taste, and whiskey, he co-hosts Trash in the Can, a podcast that digs through cinema’s dustbin in search of the best worst movies alongside longtime co-conspirator Wright Sulek. Eric and Wright also bring their love of cinematic oddities to the big screen with One Man’s Trash, a monthly live screening series at Violet Crown Cinema in Austin, Texas, spotlighting cult classics, forgotten flops, and anything proudly wearing the label “so bad it’s good.” He also hosted Heart/Felt, a limited podcast series celebrating the 70th anniversary of The Muppets and the enduring legacy of Jim Henson. DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 381: DN SETS A TRAP
John and Chris must navigate the tricky waters of the ocean of physical media every show. And this week, there’s a storm on the horizon. We take on Chris’s complicated feelings about a swingin’ 60s version of a famous detective, a film from a director Chris has never liked anything from but everyone says this might be the one he does, a musical version of a classic film that nobody saw, a high-profile dark “comedy” that has real script problems but everyone else seemed to like for some reason, and so much more.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar and theater management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).
John Gholson (Digital Noise)
John Gholson is a writer and cartoonist with bylines at Movies.com, Moviefone, and Vice and illustration work for GQ and Fandango. As an actor, John can be seen in Zero Charisma, Hidden America With Jonah Ray, F**k My Son, Man Finds Tape, and The Suplex Duplex Complex. He writes and performs sketch comedy regularly at The New Movement Theater. John currently lives in Austin with his beloved comic book collection and a cat named after Peter Cushing.

HELLCAT MOVIE REVIEW
How’s this for a horror movie setup? Lena (Dakota Gorman) wakes up injured, confused, and locked inside a camper trailer hurtling down the highway. The mysterious Clive (Todd Terry), communicating from the truck ahead, insists she’s been infected with something nasty and they have only an hour to reach a doctor. Lena has a slightly different theory: maybe don’t trust the guy who locked you in an RV. Good start, right? But can this go the distance? Writer-director Brock Bodell’s feature debut turns that wonderfully nasty setup into a claustrophobic game of shifting realities, unreliable memories, bodily horror, and the gradually emerging realization that there may be a monster in this trailer. Caroline, Lewayne, and T.C. speed down the highway in the One Of Us RV discussing their feelings about this creature feature and just how much creature needs to be featured in order to make it a worthwhile viewing.

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON SEASON 3 REVIEW
It’s been two years since season two of House of the Dragon premiered and the world has been waiting with bated breath to finally see some action in the show. We last left our heroes walking into a giant battle and season three picks up immediately in the thick of it. Rhaenyra’s (Emma D’Arcy) allies have banded together to crush King’s Landing’s forces from land, sea, and air and quite impressively does so but with a great cost. Where the first two seasons took their time plotting away everyone’s desires to rule the seven kingdoms, season three takes a firm stand in ramping up the action and story to sprint towards the finish line. Through Rhaenyra’s faith in Alicent (Olivia Cooke), she and Daemon (Matt Smith) almost single handedly take over the iron throne. It’s quite shocking to see House of the Dragon speed up the story and bring our characters to their final destinations and yet, the middle of this season brings back familiar plotting and pacing. Now that Queen Rhaenyra has taken over King’s Landing, she finally experiences what it’s like to rule and deal with all of the daily troubles a kingdom goes through. Luckily, we have multiple storylines that carry the show on it’s back. Surprisingly, the most interesting is the side quest of King Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) and Lord Larys (Matthew Needham) as they try to find refuge away from the chaos. What we’re left with is a more action forward season that still suffers from boring story structure, but at least this time the show knows how to stick the landing. Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. Born and raised in the Hudson Valley, NY, Dom “the Movie Nerd” Rizzi fell in love with film at a young age. After majoring in film in both community college and achieving a Bachelor’s degree in film from SUNY Oswego, Dom went on to start his own podcast Talkin’ TV during Covid before studying acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City. Relentlessly passionate about everything related to film, Dom has shot and produced several short films, as well as having written several scripts. DON’T SAY GOOD LUCK MOVIE REVIEW
There are two kinds of people in this world; those who get excited when they see Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison production slate appear before a film, and those who brace themselves for two hours of lowbrow schlock. While neither reaction is entirely warranted, Sandler can be a divisive figure amongst cineastes, and his latest film for Netflix will certainly raise eyebrows due to his casting his own daughter in the starring role of Sophie Birenbaum, a teenaged girl who lands the leading role in a high school musical, This coming of age tale features many of the expected rites of passage (learning how to drive, kissing boys, the inevitable boozy house party, etc.) but Sophie must also grapple with the possibility of losing her mother Elizabeth (Melanie Lynskey) who has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. Director and co-writer Julie Hart (Fast Color, I’m Your Woman) looks for some fresh angles in a tale whose trajectory is already familiar, and she surrounds the younger Sandler with veteran actors like Lynskey, Bebe Neuwirth, and Max Greenfield, as well as Happy Madison alumni Steve Buscemi and Jon Lovitz. Our former theater nerds turned film reviewers Neil, Rae, and Marco acknowledged the nepo baby situation but are prepared to judge the film on its own merits. VIVA CARMEN! MOVIE REVIEW
Everyone knows the music from Bizet’s Carmen—one of the world’s most famous operas! Bits of it have riffed their way into everything from trailers to soundtracks and parodies. And of course, everyone knows the classic story of Carmen…Anyone? The story of a beautiful Romani dancer, wanted by the law, who falls into a complicated relationship with a soldier, becoming caught in an unhealthy love triangle in a tale of lust, obsession, and jealousy? Doesn’t ring a bell? Luckily, Maciej is here, from Europe, where more people are apparently in tune with operatic classics. Set in sunny Spain, Viva Carmen! retells this 150-year-old tale from the point of view of Salva, an orphan who assists a blind knife sharpener. Salva soon becomes smitten with Carmen, a beautiful, free-spirited, and mysterious Romani girl who, sadly for him, is a little older. When the old man has a vision of a soldier named José killing Carmen, Salva decides to do everything in his power to warn her, even as romantic feelings begin to develop between Carmen and José. Salva befriends a group of child thieves and finds himself caught up in Carmen’s story and the dangerous world surrounding her. Director Sébastien Laudenbach (The Girl Without Hands) takes his usually abstract visual style and uses it to tell a much more adventurous story. The result is a colorful, energetic reinterpretation of one of opera’s most famous tragedies, told through the eyes of a child. But can Carmen successfully be transformed into a modern animated musical? How do the darker elements of the original story clash with its child’s-eye perspective? Can a movie be an authentic celebration of Romani culture while also repeatedly using the G-slur in its dialogue? More importantly, does Viva Carmen! manage to make a 150-year-old opera feel alive again, or is this one classic that should have stayed on the stage?
Maciej Kur is a Polish comic and film script writer, director and reviewer, and decidedly the biggest fan and most loyal supporter of Oneofus.net. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw with a master’s degree and the Academy of Film and Television. Co-creator of the comic book series Dollicious and Emilka Sza (with Magdalena Kania ) and Lil i Put, (with Piotr Bednarczyk ) and many others. Awarded in 2014 for a comic book in the spirit of Janusz Christa and awarded for “Złoty Puchar” in 2023. He wrote scripts for new comic books in the Polish cult series “Kayko and Kokosh”, as well as episodes of an animated series based on it (available on Netflix). He wrote for many other shows including “Kicia Kocia” (Kitty Kotty), “Pompik the Bison”, “Pucio”, “Hip-Hip and Hurra” and the upcoming animated movies “The Shrew of Destiny” and “Tytus, Romek and A’tomek”. He also directed a documentary about Polish animation legend “Witold Giersz”. Big lover of the art of animation and comic books.
Michael Riojas (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)
The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal Smallville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER MOVIE REVIEW
Coming in at entry number six is Insidious: Out of the Further, facing the ultimate horror franchise hurdle: how do you keep malevolent spirits scary after six movies? Quick recap: Generally, ghosts suck, mainly in their attempts to mess with humans and gain entry to our world. Previous films mainly focused on possession and the non-stop spiritual travails of the Lambert family. The meet-in-the-middle realm is called The Further and unfortunately for humans, usually to put a stop to spirit shenanigans, you gotta visit it. Out of the Further takes a break from that family and introduces a new character, Gemma (Amelia Eve). As a child, she watched some spooky stuff go down that drove her mother crazy and led to her killing herself right in front of her. Defying disbelief, as an adult she still lives in the house that all that went down in, and is a single mom of a daughter about the same age she was when her life went off the rails. But it’s been smooth sailing…until the nightmares begin. A new entity (that looks like Iggy Pop cosplaying goth lady justice) is coming after her and her family and all she knows is, she is NOT gonna end up like her mother. With the help of a helpful ghost (you can’t keep a good Lin Shaye down), her cop boyfriend (Brandon Perea) and a psychic tattoo artist (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) she will take on this threat using a special gift that she inherited from her mom…the gift that is the very reason this ghost is coming after her. Chris, Bret, Nathan, and Sarah hold a seance to contact the ghosts of critics past and see if the planchette points at YES or NO for whether you should go see Insidious: Out of the Further.

TEENAGE SEX AND DEATH AT CAMP MIASMA MOVIE REVIEW
What happens to an IP (intellectual property) that nobody watches anymore? Sometimes they devolve into so many gradually deteriorating sequels that the characters find themselves in space. Usually the series get bought by some lesser streaming service so scared little children at a sleepover can watch them in a marathon after the parents have gone to bed. These IPs never truly die as long as those scared kids grow up and become adults with cameras and ideas. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma tells the story of hit indie film maker Kris (Hannah Einbinder) who’s been hired to re-vitalize the Camp Miasma series featuring serial slasher monster “Little Death”. Kris plans to blow minds and elevate the horror by casting the original final girl from the first movie in the long running series, Billy (Gillian Anderson). Billy is a reclusive actor who refused to return to the franchise after the first film. Yet, she lives at the campgrounds where the first movie was shot. And she’s always watching the lake and ready for the rise and return of Little Death. Bradly, Dom, and Eoin discuss the impact of stabby stab 80s film making. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is a love letter to the slasher film that seems to suggest that movies are made to be watched and not dissected by intellectuals clucking their tongues, stroking their beards, and saying ‘oh my what’s to be done with this Jane Schoenbrun?’.

Born and raised in the Hudson Valley, NY, Dom “the Movie Nerd” Rizzi fell in love with film at a young age. After majoring in film in both community college and achieving a Bachelor’s degree in film from SUNY Oswego, Dom went on to start his own podcast Talkin’ TV during Covid before studying acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City. Relentlessly passionate about everything related to film, Dom has shot and produced several short films, as well as having written several scripts. Working at a liquor store by day, Dom has continued to pursue his passion for cinema in any capacity he can, because to follow his dreams, in the words of Shia LaBeouf pre-descent into insanity, “just do it.”
Eoin Daly
Born and raised in Dublin Ireland, Eoin currently lives in London and has been an avid film lover from as far back as they can remember. LIFE, LARRY AND THE PURSUIT OF UNHAPPINESS SERIES REVIEW
The USA has been a country for 250 years and in that time it has gone through some pretty amazing moments. From the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 to the moon landing in 1969. Some of these major events in American history truly were a declaration of hope for the world and giant leaps for humanity. What about the silly side of things though? Larry David has created a series of comedy sketches under his very particular brand of comedy regarding petty grievances and annoyed participants inserted throughout the timeline of the American experiment called Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America. A huge cast of young and old comedians from Bill Hader to Kathryn Hahn are yucking it up through ridiculous scenarios involving inventors, presidents, and pioneers. What if Mary Todd Lincoln didn’t return your favorite scarf? Why did Alexander Graham Bell choose that ringtone? How did Buzz and Neil decide who would be the first to step onto the surface of the moon? Bradly, Bret, and Eoin dissect the art of sketch, gush over their favorite comedians, and bring a list of notes all their own to improve the show should it ever get a season two. X-MEN ’97 SEASON 2 REVIEW
With such an acclaimed first season of X-Men ’97 and the exit of the showrunner Beau DeMayo, fans were concerned if Disney would be able to replicate if not exceed the success they had with the 2nd season. Well, we’re here to tell you that for the most part they did! The end of the first season, we found our heroes scattered throughout time; one half stranded in ancient Egypt meeting a young Apocalypse and the other surviving in a post-Apocalypse world where a few renegades struggle to survive. The first few episodes dive deeper into the psyche of En Sabah Nur (the mutant before he became Apocalypse) as Magneto tries to persuade him to look at the light while the future storyline has Cyclops and Jean Grey reconnecting with their son, Nathan (pre-Cable), and spend the time with a son they never really had. Things take a tragic turn and we then find the X-Men back in the 90’s with the help of Forge and Bishop. This is where the season starts to stall out with a few episodes that stray away from the main arc. These episodes, more like monster of the week episodes, are not terrible by any stretch of the imagination, but more or less derail the flow and pacing of such solid writing and character development. The season does bring it back around where it focuses on Rogue’s arc from the first season and let’s her shine to such incredible sights. Listen as Wright, Rhett, Dom, and Eoin band together to defeat the evil forces that are negative criticism!

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox. As of 2024, Wright has now been inducted into the Austin Film Critics Association as well as co-owns the One of Us network with Chris Cox.

Rhett O’Hara (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Trash in the Can)
Rhett O’Hara has really been looking forward to writing this “about me”. He blames movies for a lot of things in his life. He blames seeing Batman Returns as a child for his interest in all things goth and camp. He blames seeing Akira at far too young of an age for his interest in films that dare to venture into the weirder side of things. He blames Midsommar for never visiting Sweden. Rhett has lived in Austin for a couple of decades, so he can speak fondly of the old days of renting DVDs from I Luv Video (Tetsuo the Iron Man left a mark) and buying peculiar documentaries (The Nomi Song, Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist) from Waterloo Video. Rhett also remembers reading an “about me” that stuck with him a few years back. Time continued and he felt a constant need to share “about me” as well. It wasn’t a voice telling him to do this but something akin to the feeling of knowing that someone is watching you without ever actually seeing that person. Rhett has been anxious and is only just now feeling a sense of relief writing this. He feels selfish though, knowing that this will continue on to the next host; the desire…. the urge…. no….the need to pass along a message that has existed ever since humanity started sharing thoughts in a written form. You must understand that he had no choice in this matter. Rhett is truly sorry for this, but he’s every bit of a pawn as you are now. Rhett is also contractually obligated to let you know that he has been a guest on the hit podcast Trash in the Can.
