Official Trailer For ‘Godzilla’ Is A Beast Of A Tease

At first, I had little-to-no reaction to news of a Godzilla reboot. When I was younger, I liked Roland Emmerich’s ridiculous effort at recreating the iconic monster, but as I’ve gotten older I can hardly stand it. However, when I knew that Gareth Edwards was on board to direct I started whistling an entirely different tune. Given my excitement for gigantic monster action couldn’t get much higher- until the official trailer for Godzilla surfaced online.

I tell you what, if I had any doubts that Edwards could pull this off, they were quickly and violently snuffed out with this trailer. The music, the lack of music, the special effects, the cinematography, and my God, the minimal use of Godzilla in general – it’s lining up perfectly for me. It opens right off the bat with tensions running high as the military is gearing up to jump from a plane on a mission to do God knows what, but it looks fantastic. There’s a shot of the jumpers descending from some ominous clouds followed by red smoke that is just incredible and when they approach the destruction Godzilla has caused, there’s a split-second shot of the beast coming into sight before the camera cuts to a series of character shots and other cool looking special effect shots. The music swells perfectly until the final shot that perfectly obscures what everyone is waiting for behind shadows and dust and then the iconic roar bursts through the speakers and I was giddy with excitement as the title card popped up and the trailer ended. See it for yourself and tell me you’re not excited.

I know reboots often disappoint, but with Edwards at the helm, I believe this will at least be entertaining. Granted, all we really have to go by is his debut film, Monsters, but I happen to really love that film. The trailer alone is infinitely more watchable than Emmerich’s version and I intend to watch this trailer multiple times until new footage surfaces. Look for Godzilla in theaters May 16, 2014.

What are your thoughts on the trailer? Are you excited for the reboot? Why? Why not? Sound off below!

‘Boilerplate’ Writers Come Aboard for ‘Star Trek 3’

According to a recently announced hiring decision, Star Trek 3 scribe Roberto Orci will not be alone in his writing efforts for the film. While there were rumors about Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (the duo who wrote Thor and X-men First Class) joining Orci, news from earlier this week served to dispel them. Paramount and Skydance Productions have brought in another writing duo, Patrick McKay and John D. Payne, for the third film in the rebooted franchise.

If you’re not familiar with those names, you’re certainly not alone. The only credit these two have under their belts is an adaptation of the Boilerplate graphic novel by husband and wife creators Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett. The film rights for the adaptation were optioned by Paramount and J.J. Abrams is set to produce, but otherwise there is not much word about the Boilerplate movie. In other words, McKay and Payne’s sole writing credit has yet to see the light of day.

It’s safe to say I’m slightly concerned that two relatively unknown writers will be the ones responsible for the third movie in such a well-known property. I think this is a very risky move, especially considering the reception of Star Trek Into Darkness. Of course, since we don’t really know anything about McKay and Payne’s talents, it is possible that they could be fantastic writers and the film will be incredible. The main thing that gives me hope is that even though the script has lost Damon Lindelof and Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci is still there as a leading writer on the project. We’ll have to wait some time before we’ll know if this gamble is a success.

What do you guys think of this surprise decision? Does this give you hope for the third movie or does it worry you? Let us know down below!

My (Non)Gamer Shame – Part 2: Technology is My Nemesis

While I was epically struggling to submit my recent post about my inability to play video games (seriously, I ultimately had to text our fearless leader Brian for help), I realized that perhaps blaming my gameless childhood might be an oversimplification of the problem. My lack of practice may not actually be the issue here.* I may in fact be allergic to technology.

*My mother has asked for an apology for blaming her. Additionally I was informed that my video game ban came from her knowledge that people “sometimes die from gaming marathons.” Apparently there is no middle ground here and the only two options are a complete ban or death. This seems extremely suspect to me, but I suppose I am willing to issue a half apology in light of this being an attempt to save my young life. So Mom, I’m sorry-ish.

Overall this is a frightening (if not completely surprising) realization. You know what’s even worse and more embarrassing than a geek who isn’t a gamer? One who wouldn’t even know how to hook up the gaming system. The one system I do own (a Wii, possibly purchased to play Just Dance so I don’t have to go to the gym) has been sitting in a box since I moved into my current apartment. Six months ago. Ash promised to come hook it up for me, but I’m guessing she expected that I would figure it out eventually. Wrong. The only reason my DVD player is hooked up is because they come with those handy color coded wires. Are those called wires? Cords? See what I’m dealing with here?

Let’s talk cars. I drive a Toyota Corolla, a car chosen in no small part due to the fact that it is uncomplicated. I was recently out running errands and noticed that one of the little lights on my dashboard was on. Since I was close to the dealership, I decided to just stop by and save myself an hour of looking through the manual or a very uncomfortable phone call in which I would try to describe which light was on. Here’s what transpired at the dealership:

Me: One of my indicator lights is on, can you check it please?

Toyota Dealership Guy (TDG): Which light?

Me: (Shit.) The one that looks like a butt crack?

TDG: (Blank stare…awkward silence)  …HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Yep. Probably should have gone with the uncomfortable phone call. Turns out it was just my tire pressure, but how the heck am I supposed to know that?!

Tire Pressure Light

I know what you’re thinking. Phones. Surely she can use her phone right? I mean I did ultimately get the last post up (and I’m assuming this one too, fingers crossed!), so obviously my texts to Brian were successful! Well yes and no. I can use my phone as long as all conditions are perfect. But as soon as something goes wrong, it’s a disaster. About a year ago I was sitting at my desk at work and dropped my phone onto our very hard floor. The screen wasn’t cracked, in fact it looked perfect, but it was dead. I mean dead.

I spent the better part of my workday (sorry boss) attempting to revive it. There are only 4 buttons on an iPhone, but you better believe I was pushing every combination of them while praying to the phone gods. Coworkers tried to help, only proving that my technology allergy actually spreads to the objects themselves. I made the dreaded call (using my office phone like it was the Stone Age) to find out if I had insurance. Of course not, why would I need that? I’m only kryptonite to all electronic devices.

So I came to terms with my new reality. I was about to drop big time $$$ on a new phone. I dragged myself to the store after work, tail between my legs, ready to buy a new phone I couldn’t afford. And the phone store clerk, who was approximately 12 years old and texting on her own phone the whole time, turned my DEAD phone back on in less than 3 seconds. WTF? All day I tried those same buttons. ALL DAY!

Luckily there is some good news for people like me. While technology is getting more complicated, it is also getting much simpler. Most new gadgets only involve an ON/OFF button. This is great, but I can still screw it up. Just this afternoon I couldn’t figure out if I’d turned my office’s alarm system on (again, sorry boss) despite a rather simple display that says “Armed” or “Disarmed” at any given time. When at home, I generally end up unplugging things just to be safe. This of course leads to the clocks ALWAYS being wrong on my microwave, oven, DVD player, etc. But, I think we are on our way to technology that I can simply command. (Not like Siri, me and Siri DO NOT get along. More like a nice and cooperative Cylon.) In the meantime I will continue to imagine a day when I can go to Best Buy and come out with a new TV and not feel like a complete moron. I can dream, can’t I?

Jerry Bruckheimer Rides Into the Danger Zone With Paramount Pictures

To quote on oft-cited Archer routine, we’re riding into the danger zone once again, courtesy of acclaimed producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Bruckheimer has signed a large-scale production deal with Paramount, loosening his long-term ties with Disney. The deal is a first look, three year agreement that will start up in 2014. Notably, there are two major sequels included in Paramount’s new contract with Bruckheimer.

The first movie is Beverly Hills Cops 4, which will return Eddie Murphy to the franchise as Axel Foley. It has been reported that the script is being written by Andre-Nemec and Josh Applebaum, the writing duo behind Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and the soon to be released Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. The second film in the contract is Top Gun 2 and like Eddie Murphy,  Tom Cruise will be reprising his iconic role in the sequel. While Bruckheimer has decided not to renew his deal with Disney, the producer and the House of Mouse will still work together on a few films, such as the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean 5.

Securing Bruckheimer is a monumental gain for Paramount. He has worked on many successful films as National Treasure, Remember the Titans, and the entirety of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. He is also a decorated producer, with six Academy Awards and four Golden Globes to his name, along with numerous nominations. He has made billions in sales and in the US alone, nineteen of his films have made over a hundred million dollars at the box office. It is safe to say the man brings home the bacon. While his films have been met with mixed reviews, he is known for making those high numbers the studios love.

Bruckheimer isn’t among my favorite producers. While he’s done some good work, his movies are very hit-or-miss with me and a lot of his more recent films have been closer to the miss side of the equation. Still, he is always someone to keep an eye on. I do have to wonder where the Top Gun and Beverly Hills Cops franchises will go considering how long it’s been since the last entries in each series. At least this might give Archer one more reason to go to the danger zone, as if he needs one.

What do you guys think of Jerry Bruckheimer’s film career? Are you glad he is pulling away from Disney and working closely with Paramount? Give us your opinions in the comments!

There Could Be a Gallifrey Out There After All

Earlier this year, the University of Arizona discovered a new planet. The people who located the planet christened with the catchy title of HD 106906 b. As lyrical as that name is, some people have decided another title would be more appropriate, given the timing of the discovery. A Doctor Who fan from Melbourne, Australia named Sam Menhennet decided to propose a name for HD 106906 b that would honor the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, an event that was marked worldwide a few weeks ago.  Menhennet is leading the charge to name the planet Gallifrey, after the home planet of the Doctor himself. He had this to say on the subject:

I really want this planet to be named Gallifrey. Even if it just an honorary name, or a nickname, there really needs to be a Gallifrey out there in the universe. Doctor Who is legendary, award winning, record breaking, and global, and this planet deserves something special and supernatural as its name, How better to honor its existence than by dubbing it the home planet of our beloved time travelling alien, The Doctor? Years from now, when I have grandchildren, and I tell them about my favorite show growing up, I want to tell them that we found the planet that The Doctor was from. Do it for the fandom! Please share! and get evreyone whovian to sign this petition!

You read right. This ambitious young man made a petition hoping it would help get the planet’s name changed. As of now the petition has gotten 100,265 supporters and Menhennet seeks 49,735 more for a total of 150,000.

HD 106906 b is a gas giant that orbits around HD 106906. It is estimated to be around eleven times the mass of Jupiter. The reason this planet has garnered so much attention is because it has the farthest ever orbit. It is an astronomical 650 AU from its host star. This is much greater then what was formerly believed to be the possible distance between a planet and its host star thanks to nebular theory.

HD 106906 b came at a special time. Earlier this year we saw the Doctor save Gallifrey from the time war and suspend it in a moment of time – lost. Perhaps we have found it? It would certainly explain the distance!

If you are interested in naming this amazing planet Gallifrey then you can do so at Change.org.

Do you think Gallifrey is a worthy name for this planet? If you’re not a Whovian, what name would you give the planet? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Performance-Capture Legend to Helm ‘Animal Farm’ in 2014

Andy Serkis is a name movie fans should know quite well, as he is THE performance capture pioneer. He has done the breathtaking performances of Gollum from the Lord of the Rings, and Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. He has worked in TV, video games, and movies. While he has attained great success and praise in this field, Serkis has expressed his desire to try his hand at directing. Recently he announced the project that would serve as his entry into this career path. He will be shooting an adaption of George Orwell’s beloved novel Animal Farm.

Serkis confirmed his attachment to the film and gave a status report in an interview with ScreenDaily. Acquired to Serkis, his team has started on pre-visuals and principal photography was planned to begin in the middle to third quarter of 2014. He commented further on his goals for the film, saying,

What we’re trying to do is fairly unique. It’s going to be entirely performance captured, so rather than photographing real animals and showing them with talking mouths, it will all be generated by the interaction between the actors playing those roles…the physicality and facial expressions of all the animals will come directly from actors’ performances.

The design for those has to work in a particular way and it’s a particular heightened design look we’re going for. We also have to find a balancing aesthetic for the environment in which we situate the characters. We’re experimenting shooting with live action plates but with a heightened design…it’s not just shooting in a field. We’re producing this like an independent movie. The idea is to get as far down the road as we can but eventually we expect a studio to get involved.

A cast has been finalized but the details are being kept under wraps at the moment. It was revealed that concept artist Michael Kutsche will be working on the film as well. Kutsche has previously worked on Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, Thor, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. He estimates that the budget for Animal Farm is somewhere around $50 million.

To say this is a very ambitious project is putting it lightly. This would be the first film where animals would be performance-captured, which is a feat in itself. While Serkis is no stranger to playing animals, playing an ape is very different then playing a pig, horse, or other types of animals. Still, given his successful track record, I have every faith Andy Serkis will pull this off.

What are your thoughts on the project? Is Serkis starting his directorial career off on the right foot? Share your opinions in the comments!

A Familiar Face Returns to Direct Back-to-Back X-Flicks

There are certain names that just go together in people’s minds, pairings that excite an audience as the combination is seen almost as a seal of quality. One such pairing is director Bryan Singer and the series of movies he helped launch in the year 2000, the X-Men film franchise. The writer/director of X-Men and X2, the producer/writer for X-Men First Class, and the director/producer of the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past has been confirmed to be behind the camera for the merry mutants once again for their next film installment, X-Men: Apocalypse.  The director had teased about his involvement in a tweet that read “#Xmen #Apocalypse 2016!”, but confirmation of his directorial duties didn’t take place until recently.

While Singer’s recent track record outside of the X-Franchise has been spotty, the X-movies he’s been attached to are some of the most fondly remembered entries into the series and well received by fans and critics alike. Even X-Men First Class, which is the lowest ranked film in the franchise in terms of box office, served to bring people back to the series and re-instill a positive public perception of the films after the damage caused by  X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

While X-Men: Days of Future Past is a giant crossover event for the franchise, blending the cast of the classic movies with cast of X-Men First Class and will be the second most expensive movie Fox has ever made (the first being Avatar), X-Men: Apocalypse is set to solely focus on the First Class team.

I couldn’t be happier to have Singer back on the franchise he made famous. I’ve liked every installment he’s worked on and he really does seem committed to making the franchise as strong as possible. Here’s to your success, sir.

As always, we want to hear from you. Are you excited to have Singer back making X-Men films or would you prefer someone else being in charge of the franchise? Let us know in the comments below!
