World of UScast: The British Bodcast: Episode VIII

Time for another British Bodcast!

Duke and Kia call back to those in the OneOfUs community who have kindly left comments on past episodes. Then they talk about Week 1 of NFL, Fantasy Football, all the recent controversies and how it would be handled differently in the UK. Duke owns up to being a bit of a dick with those who are going crazy for the iPhone 6, which Kia has no problem calling him on (as usual). Kia finally got to look at engagement rings and it wasn’t a painful and long process!

If you have any relationship or sex questions, please feel free to send them to hello@needtoconsume.com as Duke and Kia want to try out a new q&a section of the show.

And one last thing…Duke and Kia get a bit heated as they discuss the reaction to a little photo-shoot that Kia did recently (which you can find here.)

Ash & Fern: Using My Powers For Good

Despite what my extended absence may have led you to believe, I did in fact survive my annual pilgrimage to Dragon Con with only a mild hangover and one unidentified bruise. Unfortunately it was immediately followed by our biggest yearly event at work and an ongoing battle with the plague that knocked me out of commission for a couple of weeks. But I’m back!

The quick recap is that Dragon Con was a complete success as usual. I met up with some old friends, made some new ones, and chickened out when presented with multiple opportunities to meet Craig Parker. (If you haven’t caught on, someone who was in both Lord of the Rings and Spartacus is pretty much my holy grail.) I just couldn’t do it. Even shot-gunning a beer for courage didn’t help, though I did learn that I might be too old for shot-gunning beers, so that wasn’t a total loss. But I’ll admit it, I’m a major wuss.

Alas, what could have been?
Alas, what could have been?

By our 8 hour drive home on Monday, my Con-buddy Kristina and I were slap happy and probably in desperate need of a balanced meal. Because we have different interests we tend to spend the majority of the Con apart, so we were both brimming with stories of our adventures to fill the time. As she began telling me about meeting David Blue (Eli from Stargate Universe) and how much she misses that show, my sleep deprived mind started to wander. If I had the power to bring back one show, to save it from an untimely and unfortunate grave, which show would I choose?

In my usual style I asked Kristina that question as soon as it popped into my head. She didn’t hesitate. She loves Stargate. It’s one of her annual Dragon Con costumes. And in the overall Stargate world, Universe seems to be one story that hasn’t been completely told. On the surface, it definitely has all the right ingredients: a built in and loyal fanbase, a story that ended on a cliffhanger and needs to be finished, and a cast that would still be young enough to actually pull it off. Maybe her dream isn’t so crazy?

stargate-universe_poster

Asking myself the same question turned out to be not quite as simple. I know the obvious answer. Maybe it’s what I should say. Most sci-fi fans wouldn’t even hesitate. And yes obviously I would love to see more Firefly. We all would. It still makes me angry whenever I think back on how it went down. But, and please don’t throw things at me, isn’t that part of the magic? That anger. The hatred of Fox. The bitterness about the injustice of how the whole genre is treated. Isn’t that part of what we love? So, I’ll say it. I don’t think I’d use my power on Firefly. I think it will live on forever partially because of how it ended, not in spite of it.

More recently there have been a couple of less obvious options. Enlisted was a truly hilarious show that got buried in an impossible Friday night timeslot by, you guessed it, Fox. Happy Endings is another show that I keep re-watching even though I can already recite every one of the limited number of episodes. And my dad is still pissed about Revolution. Brings it up frequently.

Sorry Dad, not happening.
Sorry Dad, not happening.

Childhood me would say I should go with My So-Called Life. I’d like to believe that’s only 50%ish because of Jordan Catalano. It was a show that understood what it was like to be the weirdo trying to find the right balance between being a good kid and a rebel. It was ahead of its time with a gay character, sex, and open drug use. And man did Angela Chase dress cool. Seriously, I still don’t know why my mom wouldn’t buy me boots like hers.

But if I had to pick one show, and I apparently I do because I already made up the rules to this silly game, it’s really not that hard for me. Freaks and Geeks is still one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. It did a lot of what My So-Called Life did, but better and with James Franco and Seth Rogan. It had family dynamics, good friendships and destructive ones, and great music. It was adolescence in a nutshell. It was amazing. And perhaps most importantly, it featured one of the best TV depictions of a game of Dungeons and Dragons ever.

Your turn. What show would you bring back if you had the power? I know, I know. Firefly.

New York Comic Con’s Most Anticipated Panels

There are only a few events every year where you get to see sneak peeks and big reveals of some of the most highly anticipated geek properties of today. Thankfully, New York Comic Con is one of those events that sends geek hearts fluttering with its numerous panels on movies, television shows and comic books. With NYCC less than a month away, it felt appropriate to look at some of the biggest panels set to premiere at the Con.

Daredevil

daredevil2

As a fan of Daredevil, I’m eagerly anticipating any news about Marvel’s Netflix series based on Ol’ Horn Head’s gritty urban adventures in Hell’s Kitchen. With Daredevil’s Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) already set to appear at the panel, the possibility of getting an early look at some footage between the two mortal enemies seems like a good possibility. Daredevil’s producer, Steven S. DeNight (Spartacus, Smallville), has explained that comic book writer Frank Miller’s early work on the character will play a huge role in shaping the tone and look of the show. As any obsessive Marvel fan knows, Miller’s Daredevil stories are considered by many to be his best work for Marvel. Here’s hoping that the show will eventually adapt Brian Michael Bendis and Ed Brubaker’s award-winning runs on the character as well. The Daredevil panel will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11.

The Legend of Korra

lok

The Legend of Korra has struggled to maintain a strong viewership on television, but that hasn’t stopped Korra creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino from already releasing details on Book 4: Balance. Supposedly the final season in Korra’s story, Balance will follow the young Avatar’s recovery after her confrontation with Zaheer and the Red Lotus, and introduce a new antagonist for Team Avatar to battle. Even with that tiny bit of information revealed, there is still so little known what Korra might possibly be facing in her final season, but both Konietzko and DiMartino have promised that  storylines all the way back from Season 1 will be wrapped up. I’m still hoping we’ll see the return of the anti-bending Equalists in a new form. The Legend of Korra panel will be held on Thursday, October 9.

Gotham

gotham

Originally supposed to be a series about a young Detective Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie), Gotham seems to have transformed into a story about Batman’s rogues gallery and yet another re-telling of The Dark Knight’s origin story. Already placing emphasis on a young(er) versions of the Penguin, Riddler, Poison Ivy and Catwoman, Gotham has some Bat-fans nervous that it has already lost focus before the premiere of its first episode. In any case, Gotham producer Bruno Heller (The Mentalist, Rome) will be joined by McKenzie, Sean Pertwee (Alfred Pennyworth), Robin Lord Taylor (Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin) and Erin Richards (Barbra Kean) on a panel for the highly anticipated Fox series. Superhero fans will get their first taste of Gotham when it airs its first episode on Sept. 22.

Constantine

Constantine_Official_Trailer

Based off of the critically acclaimed Vertigo comic book series Hellblazer, Constantine tells the story of John Constantine (Matt Ryan), a chain-smoking Cockney-accented Brit whose greatest aspirations in life are to get drunk and battle evil supernatural forces. As many Hellblazer readers know, Constantine has already received a mediocre film adaptation starring Keanu Reeves as the title character. The series, which is set to premiere on NBC on Oct. 24, will follow Constantine as he protects the daughter of a fellow demon hunter and magician. Before then, the cast, along with series producer David Goyer, will be taking part in a panel to promote the show on Oct. 11.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

agents of shield

So, I’ll be honest. I’m not the biggest fan of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but there are many who are, and there seems to be a lot of excitement about the second season. In addition to the shows returning cast, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be bolstered by the presence of Lucy Lawless as Agent Isabelle Hartley, and Adrian Palicki as Mockingbird. The show will also launch spin-off series Agent Carter, and feature an appearance by Haley Atwell as Peggy Carter herself. Season 2 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will most likely deal with the fallout from the first season, and figure out how Agent Coulson’s team deals with a world where S.H.I.E.L.D., at least in its original form, is no more. Hopefully this time around, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will spend more time expanding Marvel’s cinematic universe, and less time focusing on the painfully underwritten characters (I’m looking at you Skye!). S.H.I.E.L.D. fans can catch the NYCC panel on Oct. 10, along with a special screening of the first episode of Season 2.

Any particular panels at NYCC that you’re interested in? What revelations do you predict that we’ll hear from the con floor? Let us know in the comments below!

Highly Suspect Reviews: ‘The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them’

Unusual Suspects. Sit in the dark but the spark of the light of the screen.

Will they be mean?

All so Highly Suspect.  Why doooooo they ramble on?

This review is Highly Suspect. But yooooou should listen on.

Rookie filmmaker Ned Benson takes a very ambitious, Peter Jackson-y approach to his first movie. He split one romantic drama into three separate films. The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby tells the story of a couple’s emotionally devastating breakup from each of their individual perspectives, accounting for two of the movie versions, with an additional installment blending the two.

And if you like multiple perspectives, you’ve come to the right movie review! The Unusual Suspects (in this case Brian, Beau, Elliott, and Will) open their hearts and pour their syrupy sentiments (good and bad) all over the “Them” cut of this roman-trifecta. We promise that, despite the title, we only make a few Beatles jokes.

Enjoy.

World of UScast: Wayward Podcast: Playing Ketchup

Japan’s rainy season has been over, but that hasn’t stopped it from raining on and off for the past week or so. Sarah and Toshi are back to catch up on what’s been going on, from Japan’s dengue fever epidemic to things you shouldn’t do a Google image search for!
In this episode we talk about the playable teaser, P.T., House of Cards, Doctor Who, and other random tangential topics.

Notes:
Pardon the poor audio quality – a technical snafu had us recording from the wrong mic.
This episode contains some pretty blatant spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy (even though we haven’t seen it), The Walking Dead, House of Cards, Doctor Who, and P.T.

‘Shadow of Mordor’ Will Explore the History of Middle Earth

The Lord of the Rings is one of those properties that continues to print money no matter what you do with it. While the quality of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit films have certainly left more than a few J.R.R. Tolkien enthusiasts grumbling, that’s not to say everything Lord of the Rings related is generating a similar response. In fact, one of the most highly anticipated video games of the year is supposedly set to explore the history of Middle Earth untouched by the film adaptations of Tolkien’s work.

Shadow of Mordor, developed by Monolith Productions and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, is a new game that puts players in the role of a Gondorian ranger who must fight against Sauron’s armies alone while uncovering the mysteries of Mordor. The game is said to borrow many of its characters from Tolkien’s Silmarillion, and will attempt to present the many histories of those characters to gamers unfamiliar with the material outside of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. If anything, this offers a great opportunity to expand Tolkien’s audience to those who were intimidated by the Silmarillion’s hundreds of characters and complicated structure.

taliom vs orc

Players will take control of Talion (Troy Baker), a Gondorian ranger tasked with guarding the Black Gate, and preventing the evils from the Land of Mordor from pouring out into realm of Men. With Sauron’s power growing stronger, Talion eventually fails in his task and watches as his entire family is murdered before him by the Dark Lord’s greatest servant, The Black Hand (Nolan North). Seemingly killed, Talion is reborn anew, only this time his body is playing host to an angry vengeful wraith wanting to lay waste to all of Sauron’s minions. Possessing great powers of influence and manipulation, Talion learns that he can control the most savage of Sauron’s Orc warriors and chieftains. Using this gift, Talion wages a one-man guerilla war against the armies of Mordor.

talion and wraith

Revealed in past promotional material for Shadow of Mordor, the warrior-wraith that has fused itself to Talion’s soul is named Celebrimbor (Alastair Duncan). Celebrimbor, a name that is probably not well-known to casual readers of The Lord of the Rings, was the greatest Elvian smith of the Second Age. Deceived by the Dark Lord Sauron, Celebrimbor was the one to create the 16 Rings of Power. However, unbeknownst to even Sauron, Celebrimbor secretly forged three more rings for the Elves, which were said to be greatest and fairest of the Great Rings. Angered by Celebrimbor’s deception, Sauron waged war against the Elves of Middle Earth and eventually captured the Elvian smith. Even after countless tortures at the hands of Sauron and his lieutenants, Celebrimbor refused to reveal where the rings were sent. While Sauron would eventually learn the location of the rings given to the Human Kings and Dwarf Lords, he would never learn the location of the Elvian rings. Celebrimbor would finally succumb to his brutal injuries, and his body was left to rot in the unforgiving lands of Mordor. While the Silmarillion does not mention Celebrimbor’s family, Shadow of Mordor’s story will deal with the angry wraith seeking vengeance against Sauron for the death of his wife and child.

sauron

Even though many Lord of the Rings fans know the great evil and horrible atrocities of Sauron, so few seem to know anything about him. Who was he before he wanted to conquer all of Middle Earth? Why does he wish to bring about the enslavement and destruction of the races? What exactly is he? Well, Shadow of Mordor will not only explore Sauron’s past even before the First Age, but also why he eventually became the most feared being in all of Middle Earth.

mordor orc

As a member of the angelic race called the Maiar (the same race of Gandalf the Grey and Saruman the White), Sauron, who called himself Mairon thousands of years ago, had a love of all manner of craftsmanship and forging. Serving the Valar, the superior race residing in the world, Sauron was revered for his scientific knowledge, and was well-respected among his kind. However, open rebellion among the Maiar was stirring, and a Maiar named Melkor was its chief agitator. Eventually taking the name Morgoth, Melkor appealed to the Maiar to join his cause against the Valar. Believing that Morgoth could bring about an era of reformation and creativity, Sauron joined Morgoth and was corrupted by the fallen Maiar’s influence.

talion fights orcs

Shadow of Mordor, even when it’s exploring the dense history of Tolkien’s world, will offer plenty of fun activities for players to mess around with. Whether it’s burning orcs alive or using Talion’s wraith powers to convince man-eating creatures to viciously tear apart your enemies, they’ll be more than enough to do in Monolith’s highly anticipated action game. Who knew learning could be so brutally violent?

Shadow of Mordor will be released on September 30, 2014 for PS4 and Xbox One, and November 18, 2014 for PS3 and Xbox 360.

What do you think of Shadow of Mordor’s efforts to include so much history and lore about Middle Earth? Excited about the game? Let us know in the comments below!

Somebody Likes It Ep 9 : The Super-Badass Labor Day Mix-Tape Show!!!

THE SUPER BADASS LABOR DAY MIX-TAPE SHOW!!!!

So, after last week’s show (where-in we discuss the objectively god awful “Live Through This”), Ryan, Kevin, and Myself were having a well-deserved post-show beer (look, this shit is hard…not like lifting a car over your head hard, more like convincing your nephew that there’s no more “rest of the candy” hard) and we decided to do something special for our Labor Day show. Kevin wisely pointed out that no-one would even hear the show until like 10 days after Labor Day, but I didn’t see any reason to act like it didn’t even happen (yeah, apparently Kevin is spearheading a “War on Grilling Out”…where’s your outrage Bill O’Reilly?). After all, we could just tell everybody what the deal was. Eventually, I won this argument. We settled in to discuss the format.

Several weeks ago we had begun entertaining the idea of a companion show. Well, not really a companion show, rather a Chester the Terrier to our Spike the Bulldog. The idea basically would be where we normally talked about an entire album for an hour plus, we instead would talk for 10 minutes about a particular song (and/or its accompanying video). We would call this “A Few Minutes With”. And what better way to introduce this new segment dedicated to brevity than to have our Labor Day show devote itself IN ITS ENTIRETY to “A Few Minutes With”.

So we each picked 2 songs and spent an hour talking about those 6 songs…and videos…and the after- hours party Ryan attended the night before. I’ll turn it over to the other guys so they can tell you about their picks:

RYAN:
Tracy Ullman“They Don’t Know”
The impulse to dredge up Tracy Ullman’s brilliant cover of Kirsty MacColl’s (lesser-known) “They Don’t Know” came from some dusty corner of my childhood. Murky memories of MTV back when it played music, mixed with a sense of awe that a comedian (comedienne?, let me know, Joan Rivers. Oh, wait.) who spawned the Simpsons upon the world could have (seemingly) casually, unleashed this gem unto the world. And then moved on from music. Oh, and Paul McCartney shows up in the video. You know, just ’cause.

Radiohead“Paranoid Android”
Man, hard to impart my awe at discovering that Radiohead were capable of much, much more than “Creep.” As much as I loved their previous record “The Bends”, I still wasn’t completely convinced that these lads would have staying power. I stand corrected. The entirety of “OK Computer” is an indisputable masterpiece, and this is its crowning achievement. Unless you ask Shane’s and my good friend “Big Daddy,” circa 1998.

KEVIN:
Flesh For Lulu“I Go Crazy”
Break out your studded Billy Idol faux cowboy boots and your Batman undershirt and saddle up for one of the pivotal tracks from John Hughes’ 1980s heyday. We marvel at the “Miami Vice” references, the edgy posturing of a band that enjoyed a modest peak, and how some songs from certain eras will always bear the hallmarks of those certain eras. This, dear listener, is one of those songs.

Spacehog“In The Meantime”
We ponder a world that makes it possible for a New York-by-way-of-Leeds professional rat catcher to form a band with other Leedians (Leedites? That doesn’t seem right) and how, occasionally, songs that constitute the one high point of a band sound, upon first listen, like the very best a band can offer. In the case of this track, this was Spacehog’s swing for the fences, and they ended up on some big tour undercards because of it. Shane considers this lyrical genius, while Ryan recalls his Google search reply: “you searched for Spacehog. Did you mean Space Hog?” Ponder that for awhile.

SHANE:
Extreme“More Than Words”
Really, all I have to say about this song I said in the show. My idea was to pick two hits from the same musical era that were as diametrically opposed to each other as I could think of. So with that in mind, my other choice of song was:

Sir Mix-A-Lot-“Baby Got Back”
I think I succeeded in striking that balance.

On the day of the recording, we decided to get a little ambitious and record first this segment, and then take a crack at Hank Williams Jr’s 1980 Opus Mediocre “High Notes”…but it didn’t turn out that way. Instead, we’ll take a crack at “High Notes” next week, so I hope to see you then.

Toodles!

–Shane
