Cold Storage Movie Review

COLD STORAGE MOVIE REVIEW

When a long-forgotten government experiment goes very, very wrong, a sealed biological threat awakens beneath a quiet long-term public storage facility and begins spreading fast, leaving our minimum wage heroes Naomi (Georgina Campbell) and T-Cakes (Joe Keery) scrambling to stop an outbreak before it reaches the outside world. What begins as another night on the job quickly becomes a fight for survival against something that doesn’t behave like anything they’ve seen before. Based on the novel by David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, and a hundred others), the film blends sci-fi, horror, and dark humor, leaning into creature-feature gore and the chaos that erupts when secrecy and science collide. Mike, Frank, and T.C. hole up in a decommissioned One Of Us bunker to break down the thrills, the scares, and whether Cold Storage survives its own outbreak.

T.C. De Witt (Screener Squad)

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. He has released two feature films, The Princess Knight and A Christmas Sunset. He thrives on collaboration and the thrill of sharing stories in all forms.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan?, Hollywood Royalty)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is an award-winning creative jack of all trades, and is pretty competent with most of them. He is a writer, director, animator, video editor, and motion graphics artist. He has tried his hand at nearly every form of artistic expression at least once. He was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania where he fell in love with film, writing and special effects at an early age. His obsession with film would lead him to being locally known as a “human IMDb” and being on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He would study film in Pittsburgh before taking his talents to Austin. Not letting something like Tourettes get in his way, he has produced a handful of animated short films that have won awards from film festivals all over the globe. He has also written several yet-to-be-produced screenplays and TV pilots, with some of them being recognized in screenwriting competitions. He has even created motion graphics and animations for several clients, from movie theaters to Twitch streamers. When not creating or watching films, he enjoys MST3K, classic video games and buying vinyl records. He loves dogs, dropping obscure pop culture trivia and watching travel videos. He currently resides in Austin Texas and can be followed on the Instamagrams at @ohheyitsmikejm. His body of work can be found at his homepage or you can take a gander at his somewhat-impressive IMDb listing here.

This Is Not A Test movie review

THIS IS NOT A TEST MOVIE REVIEW

Suburban living can be tough when your dad won’t get off your back about skipping class, and your Mom isn’t around to provide that parental balance, and your older sister bailed on the family. The only thing worse than that kind of anxiety is the emergency broadcast system informing you that zombies are running amok, broadcasting This is Not a Test which is also the title of this film. Based on the popular young adult series and brought to you by Shudder, the film follows Sloane (Olivia Holt) finding solace at her school while the world ends outside. Also hiding out is Rhys (Froy Gutierrez) a boy who’s always had a crush on Sloane, Cary (Corteon Moore) a cool headed take-charge jock type, Trace (Carson MacCormac) the lit match in the tinder box that’s on the verge of exploding, and his sister Grace (Chloe Avakian) the sweet young girl that wants to live long enough to graduate, fall in love, and make that money honey. This zombies ate my breakfast club crew will have to work together and work through their past traumas if they ever want to graduate. Bradly, Kate, and Lewayne discuss a year book full of zombie films, which tropes of the shuffling brain eating genre are the most successful, and which cliches of the undead need to be expelled.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad Boss, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and maybe even providing some comments of his own.

Kate Chambers (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Kate is a certified horror fiend and Horse Girl™. Her name isn’t short for anything. A native Austinite, she graduated with a BFA in Film Production from the University of Colorado Boulder then returned to the Lone Star State to make her home amid the cinephiles of the Alamo Drafthouse and the Austin Film Society. In her spare time, you can find her either down at the barn with her noble steed Jazz, watching as many movies as possible (often at work), cuddling with her pair of black cats and writing horror scripts, or nursing a beer in any available body of water… or doing Duolingo, where she’s currently on a 1000+ day streak.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Ghost Train movie review

GHOST TRAIN MOVIE REVIEW

Just when you thought it was safe to use public transportation, here comes Ghost Train, a South Korean horror anthology film about a cursed subway station. Da-kyung (Joo Hyun-young) calls herself the Horror Queen of YouTube, and hosts a once popular channel about ghost sightings and other paranormal events. Desperate to boost her viewership numbers, she investigates rumors about Gwanglim Station, a subway station with a sinister past, and a bad reputation for disappearing commuters. At first, the unnamed Station Master (Jeon Bae-soo) is reluctant to be interviewed but eventually Da-kyung persuades him to tell her a series of spooky tales that took place at the station. With each video she posts, Da-kyung’s views and popularity increase, but not everyone is happy that she is revealing the troubling secrets of Gwanglim Station. Our turnstile hopping reviewers Ian, Lewayne, and Marco eagerly jumped aboard this midnight train to K-horror, but did they enjoy the ride? Listen and find out!

Ian Butcher (Highly Suspect Reviews, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Moving all around the country growing up meant that there was only one constant in Ian’s life, the video store. Thus began a lifelong obsession with all things celluloid. While spending most of his origin story becoming a human IMDB, Ian came across a certain site called Spill.com, This discovery, combined with a need to move away from the pacific northwest and never look back, led Ian to drop out of film school and move to Austin. A general man about town, you can usually find Ian in a hole in the wall bar in east Austin, running around town with a camera pretending to be something of a filmmaker, or talking about all things movies here on OneOfUs.net and DoubleToasted.com.

Highly Suspect Reviews: How To Make a Killing

How To Make a Killing movie review

HOW TO MAKE A KILLING MOVIE REVIEW

The human quokka Glen Powell stars as Becket Redfellow, a man on death row telling a priest his life story hours before his execution. His mother was the heir to an enormous fortune when she got impregnated by a…gasp…’commoner’. Her father, Whitelaw (Ed Harris) demanded she terminate it and when she refused, she was exiled from the family and the fortune. Years later, Becket’s mom had told him, make sure you live the life you were supposed to. Becket took this to mean, get the family money back by any means necessary. Exiled or not, the family had an inheritance legal clause stating that the oldest living descendent would always be the one with the key to the castle. All Becket would have to do is kill quite a few of his relatives to get the prize. Adapted loosely from the classic 1949 British black comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets (with Alec Guinness playing all the members of the family that get killed!) How To Make A Killing is obviously a cool concept and is timely with the understandable popularity of ‘eat the rich’ movies and shows being released, but it thrashes about quite a bit trying to find a tone that works for it. Even Glen Powell’s inhuman levels of charisma can only make so much in a dent in how you feel about a character that is kinda hard to root for. This, among quite a few other things, made the film difficult to like for Chris, Wright, Mike the Editor, and Nathan. Check out their review.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Deliberations of Doom)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar and theater management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).

Nathan Flynn (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

Nathan Flynn is the resident goofball of OneofUs.Net, often found overly caffeinated, slightly stoned, and ready to unleash the hottest takes imaginable. As the resident Letterboxd Lunatic, his movie opinions are as bold as his love for Top Gun: Maverick — a film he considers less of a movie and more of a religion. When he’s not passionately defending his latest cinematic obsession, Nathan manages a comedy club in downtown Austin, where he’s somehow avoided being heckled… so far. Around here, he’s usually the punching bag, but hey, someone’s gotta do it.

Screener Squad: Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials

Agatha Christie's Seven Dials miniseries review

AGATHA CHRISTIE’S SEVEN DIALS MINISERIES REVIEW

For countless years, master storyteller and queen of the “who done it” genre, Agatha Christie, has entertained and thrilled us with her mysteries. Even if you’ve never read a single story, you’re almost certainly familiar with her thanks to countless adaptations and homages through television, film, and plays. With her most renowned work all adapted in one way or another, Netflix has made the daring decision to dive into some of her more obscure works. Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials is a three part mini-series about one woman’s pursuit for truth in the face of apathy for God, Queen, and Country. Mia McKenna-Bruce plays Lady Eileen ‘Bundle’ Brent who has just had the most wondrous romantic night. At a house party, she’s discovered the man of her dreams would like to take her as his wife and announce to the world upon the morrow. For that man, the morrow never came. Found dead in his bed next to a bottle of medicine, the doctors and guests have declared it a most unfortunate accident. Lady Caterham (Helena Bonham Carter), Bundle’s mother, has grown accustomed to tragedy striking their family and hopes that her precious child does not worry herself sick with accusations and conspiracy. Bundle however upon finding a note reading ‘Beware the Seven Dials’ in her late lovers’ study, knows the truth isn’t going to unbury itself. With the help of Superintendent Battle (Martin Freeman) the mystery is afoot and that foot plans to kick some ass. Bradly, Frank, and Chris Ayres reveal their histories with Christie novels and how this adaptation compares to decades of effort. Also, things get a bit silly and Gal Gadot impersonations are not our strong point. No time for laughter, not with killers on the loose!

Screener Squad: The Muppet Show TV Special

The Muppet Show tv special review

THE MUPPET SHOW TV SPECIAL REVIEW

The Muppet Show premiered on TV in 1976. The show was about a failing live variety and sketch comedy show hosted by The Muppets with weekly celebrity guests. 120 episodes later in 1981, they cut the music, turned out the lights, and closed the curtain forever on Jim Henson’s timeless creation. Well, except for a series of films, theme park show, live performances, a mockumentary style tv series, and now, streaming on Disney+ a brand new half hour special with the title bringing it back to the basics, The Muppet Show. With their special guest, two time Grammy winner Sabrina Carpenter,  Kermit the Frog (Matt Vogel) has a whole set list of acts to give old fans the nostalgia shot they need and new fans a gateway into the magic of Jim Henson’s workshop. WIth only half an hour however, Kermit is gonna have to cut some acts. Who’s on the chopping block, the timeless icon Miss Piggy, or long time friend and jokester Fozzy the Bear? The weight is on his little frog shoulders but nothing lifts a spirit like music and laughter. Bradly and Drew Shaw go over their favourite sketches from Muppet history and get a special guest of their own: a man dedicated to keeping the Muppets alive and well, the host of the Oneofus podcast Heart/Felt, Eric Samaniego. Because, quite frankly, he would have killed them if he wasn’t invited on.

Hollywood Royalty: Mini Ep. 3: Voyage of the Damned

Hollywood Royalty: Dunaway after Crawford

HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY: MINI EP.3: VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED

Welcome to the third in our series of minisodes focusing on the 60s and 70s films that helped make Faye Dunaway a star Here we discuss the actress leading an international all-star cast in 1976’s Voyage of the Damned. The film was based on the true story of nearly 1000 Jewish passengers who boarded an ocean liner in 1939, departing Hamburg for Cuba as a way of escaping Hitler’s regime only to be refused entry upon their arrival. Faye plays Denise Kreisler, the upper-class wife of a revered doctor who tries to hold herself together in the face of great uncertainty. Host of The Lone Acting Nominees and co-host of Televised: The TV Movie Story podcasts, Gordon McNulty, returns as we talk about this underexplored pocket of pre-WW2 history, the sprawling array of talent on display, and how good it was to be Faye Dunaway in 1976.

YOUR HOST

DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 370: Yo! DN RAPS!

I swear to you as my cats as my witness, John and Chris do not even attempt rapping on this episode. If this was a concern for your continued sanity, we understand and fear not. However, we do discuss the first hip-hop movie ever made as well as what might be the only truly good movie by an American action icon, a movie by one of our close friends that only one of us is willing to express actual opinion on, the Kevin Smith movie finally getting a decent physical release after 15 years, one of the best movies of the 90s upgraded to 4k, and more.

All titles were sent to Digital Noise by the distribution companies in question for the purpose of review. No other compensation was involved. The opinions here are our own.

PLEASE USE OUR IMAGE LINKS TO BUY ANY OF THESE TITLES ON AMAZON. IN FACT, PLEASE USE THEM AS YOUR STARTING POINT FOR ANYTHING YOU BUY OFF OF AMAZON. WE ARE AN AFFILIATE AND RECEIVE COMPENSATION FOR PURCHASES MADE FROM OUR LINKS.

YOUR REVIEWERS

John Gholson (Digital Noise)

Hollywood Royalty: Dunaway after Crawford

HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY EP.3: THE MESSENGER/WAIT UNTIL SPRING,BANDINI/THIRTEEN AT DINNER

In our third episode of Hollywood Royalty: Dunaway After Crawford, we explore time-traveling Faye and the actress’s ability to fit into any kind of world or time period on the screen. We begin in the Middle Ages with Faye playing real-life Queen Yolonde de Aragon in 1999’s The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc. After that, we head to 1920s Colorado in 1989’s Wait Until Spring, Bandini, where we see Faye play a wealthy widow who falls in love with a married Italian bricklayer played by Joe Mantegna in this drama from producer Francis Ford Coppola. We conclude our journey in 1980s London for the 1985 updated adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Thirteen at Dinner, where Faye stars as a glamorous movie star accused of murder. Host of The Lone Acting Nominees and co-host of Televised: The TV Movie Story podcasts, Gordon McNulty, joins me as we look at Faye make her way through these very specific eras on the screen.
