Avast, ye scurvy-ridden dogs! It’s a rare entry into the swords and sails action-adventure genre! Lewayne and T.C. set sail on the One Of Us schooner to chart whether this new, bloody, swashbuckling Amazon original sinks beneath the waves or turns out to be a treasure. Set on a secluded island in the treacherous waters of the Caribbean, Ercell (Priyanka Chopra Jonas), is a woman trying to outrun her past and protect the family she’s built on dry land, until a crew of ruthless cutthroats led by Karl Urban’s charming and brutal Captain Francisco Connor comes hunting for a long-lost score tied to Ercell’s old life. With the speed and brutal killing skills of a woman who’s spilled more than her share of blood, she is forced back into the life she thought she’d left behind. What follows is a whole lotta slick and messy Rated-R violence and high-seas intrigue that asks “What if John Wick, but a period piece and a lady pirate?”

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)
Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

It’s the 32nd century and in an effort to restore themselves to their former glory, a shattered Starfleet relaunches Starfleet Academy, which had been replaced by the more bellicose War College. Former Starfleet Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) has been appointed Chancellor of Starfleet Academy, which will operate alongside the still existing War College; effectively establishing two rival fraternities on the same campus. The college setting and young cast make this a more YA oriented entry in the Trek franchise, but there’s still plenty of room for familiar kinds of Trek stories involving exploration, diplomacy, ethics, space battles, and sciencing one’s way out of a problem. We also get a new threat in the form of vicious pirate Nus Braka (a scene stealing Paul Giamatti) who has history with both Ake and first year cadet, Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta). The series has drawn a lot of negativity and monetizable outrage from the usual dark corners of the internet, but our reviewers Marco, Lewayne and Felix think you should watch the show and form your own opinion. Rather than get into heavy spoilers, their review focuses more on the characters, as well as the themes and lofty ideals that made them love Star Trek in the first place. Listen to the review to find out whether they plan to enroll for a second semester of Starfleet Academy or drop out.

HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY EP.5: COLD SASSY TREE/THE CHAMBER/ALBINO ALLIGATOR
Up next on Hollywood Royalty, we head down south for three movies that make use of Faye’s Southern background. First, we travel to Georgia at the turn of the century to see Faye play a fiercely independent woman who enters into a May/December romance with a recently widowed store owner (Richard Widmark) in the 1989 cable film Cold Sassy Tree. After that, we head to Mississippi for 1996’s The Chamber, a John Grisham adaptation that casts Faye as a socialite struggling to keep dark family secrets hidden. Finally, we end up in New Orleans in Albino Alligator where Faye plays a local barmaid who finds herself in a life-and-death situation when a trio of desperate criminals (Matt Dillon, William Fichtner, and Gary Sinise) take the bar hostage. Co-host of the podcast Pfeiffer Pfridays, Michael McClain, joins me as we explore down-home Faye.
Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan?, Hollywood Royalty)
Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Waking up in deep space on a ship with the only other crew members dead and with no knowledge of how you got there on a one-way trip to save the universe is one of my greatest fears. I’m sure if it was more likely to happen it would rank up there for everyone with darkness, sharks, insects, etc. But it IS happening to Dr. Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) who is, needless to say, displeased. His only companion is the voice of the computer on his ship and it isn’t exactly a social talker. As the ship nears its destination, Ryland remembers in fits and spurts his past and what led him to this situation. There’s a sun-eating particle that will end the majority of life on Earth in a few decades if someone doesn’t go to this far-off location near another sun and figure out why THAT sun seems to be the only one not being dimmed by these particles. Now, a big thing happens to Ryland that is really essential to describing the bulk of the film’s plot, BUT it’s also delightful to discover what it is organically so I’m not going to spoil it for you here, or in the review (we do but with PLENTY of warning ahead of time). Suffice it to say that Chris, Rod, Gene, and Nathan very much enjoyed Project Hail Mary and are so completely unsurprised since every project actually directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller is a delight. For that matter, so is pretty much every film script by Drew Goddard, who adapted this from the same author who wrote The Martian which he also adapted.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Deliberations of Doom)
Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar and theater management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).
Nathan Flynn is the resident goofball of OneofUs.Net, often found overly caffeinated, slightly stoned, and ready to unleash the hottest takes imaginable. As the resident Letterboxd Lunatic, his movie opinions are as bold as his love for Top Gun: Maverick — a film he considers less of a movie and more of a religion. When he’s not passionately defending his latest cinematic obsession, Nathan manages a comedy club in downtown Austin, where he’s somehow avoided being heckled… so far. Around here, he’s usually the punching bag, but hey, someone’s gotta do it.

Teaching his young pasawan the ways of D&D, sci-fi, fantasy books and all the great nerd films and content rivers he himself swam in his whole life. A karaoke singing, photo shoot taking, apartment locating and every doggo/kitty petting fan of all of all things geeky.

Once I got home from school, I had control of the tv for two hours until my mom and sisters got home. In the mid 80’s HBO had a series called , “Dream On,” about a guy who would have flashbacks to tv and movie quotes at certain times in his life. Thats me in a nutshell. I have a true love for this and I was always good with quoting and impersonating characters from films and tv. Im not an English major and I didn’t got to school for film, but what I bring to the table is fresh perspective through the eyes of the Average Joe.

We here at oneofus.net have some experience with recording/editing podcasts all alone at night in spooky houses (some of us doing it while a beloved family member lies dying nearby). For those of us who can identify, this is a potentially very unsettling situation. Thus it is for Evy (Nina Kiri) who is recording her paranormal show Undertone with her remote host while her basically comatose mother lies upstairs in the final days of her life. Upon receiving a mysterious email with ten audio files attached that details the experiences of a man and his wife as he begins recording her while she sleeps (to prove that she talks in her sleep), they base their show around listening to each one in order. Things in the audio clips get progressively scarier and so do the events going on around Evy, although she is slow to give them any credence, being the skeptic on the show. But ya know, if nothing was going on but her getting spooked out by the source material, there’d be no reason to make the movie. Chris, Wright, Rod, and Gene take on A24’s latest foray into horror and decide if it sounded like a good idea or if it’s all just white noise.

A century before Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, the first of her name, Queen of the Andals, Khaleesi of the great grass sea, the unburnt, breaker of chains and mother of dragons met Jon Snow, the King of the North, there was a hedge knight and squire who would become legendary. HBO presents a miniseries based on the novella by George R. R. Martin and set in the world of Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) or Dunk for short, has just buried his lord. According to Dunk, his lord’s final wish was that Dunk become a knight. To prove himself, he travels to Ashford to join a tourney of warriors representing the usual houses. There he befriends a young boy named Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) who wants nothing more than to be a squire to an ideal knight and live a life separate from the obligations of his house. Seeking favor from the lords of the houses, Dunk discovers the wealthy and powerful are a lot more sketchy than the poor and needy. With the help of Egg, he’ll navigate the path of a knight without losing his ideals and values. Bradly, Felix, and Eoin sing a song of what fire is left in the long running IP and if the second spin-off can still carry the fire. Readers may be left out in the cold waiting for The Winds of Winter, but cinephiles rejoice in what IMDB users are calling the best episode of all time within the six episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

The 2020s seem to be the era of the return of the Universal monster. Not that you’d always recognize them as such. I suspect original director of The Bride of Frankenstein James Whale would be very confused by the existence of The Bride! but given that he was, in his time, an iconoclast, he might have dug it. Jessie Buckley plays Ida, a wild child in 1930s Chicago. At a dinner with friends at a mob-owned restaurant, she is possessed (Chris would argue, not literally) by the spirit of Frankenstein author Mary Shelley and goes a little crazy which leads to her sudden and tragic death. Flash to Frankenstein’s monster (pretty much just going by Frank and played by Christian Bale) who has gone to another mad scientist, Dr Euphronious (Annette Bening) to request that she create a companion for him, as a century alone has left him with his love of movies as his only companion (and yes, this love will be repeatedly relevant). Dredging up Ida’s body, they reanimate her. While Ida no longer remembers being Ida, most of her personality remains intact. Being told that she was already the partner of Frank, the two go on quite the adventure leading to some chaos that veers from Bonnie & Clyde to Moulin Rouge. There’s also police detective Jake (Peter Sarsgaard) and his secretary Myrna (Penélope Cruz). Myrna is actually the smart one, Jake knows it, and is happy about their arrangement, even if Myrna would prefer to be able to take some credit for her own brains in this misogynist time. The two gumshoes are in hot pursuit of the monsters but are slowly cluing into the fact that there’s more than just two criminals on the run happening here. Chris, Wright, Kim, and Rhett take a look at director Maggie Gyllenhaal’s sophomore effort and don’t exactly see eye-to-eye. While as most of the group finds the film electric, Chris thinks it never feels like it comes alive.

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Rhett O’Hara
Rhett O’Hara has really been looking forward to writing this “about me”. He blames movies for a lot of things in his life. He blames seeing Batman Returns as a child for his interest in all things goth and camp. He blames seeing Akira at far too young of an age for his interest in films that dare to venture into the weirder side of things. He blames Midsommar for never visiting Sweden. Rhett has lived in Austin for a couple of decades, so he can speak fondly of the old days of renting DVDs from I Luv Video (Tetsuo the Iron Man left a mark) and buying peculiar documentaries (The Nomi Song, Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist) from Waterloo Video. Rhett also remembers reading an “about me” that stuck with him a few years back. Time continued and he felt a constant need to share “about me” as well. It wasn’t a voice telling him to do this but something akin to the feeling of knowing that someone is watching you without ever actually seeing that person. Rhett has been anxious and is only just now feeling a sense of relief writing this. He feels selfish though, knowing that this will continue on to the next host; the desire…. the urge…. no….the need to pass along a message that has existed ever since humanity started sharing thoughts in a written form. You must understand that he had no choice in this matter. Rhett is truly sorry for this, but he’s every bit of a pawn as you are now. Rhett is also contractually obligated to let you know that he has been a guest on the hit podcast Trash in the Can.

Our next venture into classic 60s/70s Faye has us revisiting the film that turned the actress into an overnight sensation, 1967’s Bonnie and Clyde. Starring Warren Beatty and Faye as the infamous titular duo, this tale of crime and romance was one of the biggest hits of the year and single-handedly ushered in a new era of moviemaking. At the center of it was Faye’s portrayal of real-life outlaw Bonnie Parker, a young woman who, much like the actress, had her mind and her heart set on something bigger than herself. Host of the podcast Window Dressing, Madelaine Jane Aubel, returns to talk about this game-changing piece of cinema and how it helped to make Faye Dunaway a star.

Chris and Wright punish themselves and you with some more bad Drumpf impressions as they cover some of the best physical media coming out. With apologies to Arrow and Shaw Brothers fans for a truncated look at the really great Shawscope Vol. 4 set, we nevertheless trudge through. We look at a Taiwanese film oft cited as one of the best films of the 2000s, maybe the movie with the most quoted line from Sam Jackson, a look at why Wright has such an enduring love of pigs, and Chris names one of our titles to be one of the best midnight movies ever made.
All titles were sent to Digital Noise by the distribution companies in question for the purpose of review. No other compensation was involved. The opinions here are our own.
PLEASE USE OUR IMAGE LINKS TO BUY ANY OF THESE TITLES ON AMAZON. IN FACT, PLEASE USE THEM AS YOUR STARTING POINT FOR ANYTHING YOU BUY OFF OF AMAZON. WE ARE AN AFFILIATE AND RECEIVE COMPENSATION FOR PURCHASES MADE FROM OUR LINKS.

Wright Sulek (The Other Boss, Trash in the Can, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, One Man’s Trash, Screener Squad)
Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox. As of 2024, Wright has now been inducted into the Austin Film Critics Association as well as co-owns the One of Us network with Chris Cox.
