Screener Squad: The Mortuary Assistant

The Mortuary Assistant movie review

THE MORTUARY ASSISTANT MOVIE REVIEW

Based on the video game of the same name, The Mortuary Assistant stars Willa Holland as Rebecca, a young woman with a troubled past who has just completed her training as a mortician. One night, her boss, the mysterious Mr. Delver (Paul Sparks), asks her in to come in and cover for him. It seems that a lot of bodies came in that evening, and Delver can’t make it, so Rebecca will have to deal with the bodies all by herself. His instructions are to first embalm the corpses, then to cremate them, which seems odd to Rebecca, but she does as she’s told. And then strange things start to happen; things like lights going on and off, traumatic hallucinations, and moving corpses, not to mention a slight case of demonic possession. Rebecca is definitely going to regret agreeing to close up by herself. Our reviewers Kate, Lewayne, and Marco are no strangers to the graveyard shift, but is this Shudder original worth the time? Listen and find out!

Marco Noyola (Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Audio Editor)

By day, Marco is a mild-mannered office worker, but by night he is a mild-mannered movie watcher. He does other mild-mannered stuff too.
“I’m not a film critic. I just play one on the Internet.”

Kate Chambers (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Kate is a certified horror fiend and Horse Girl™. Her name isn’t short for anything. A native Austinite, she graduated with a BFA in Film Production from the University of Colorado Boulder then returned to the Lone Star State to make her home amid the cinephiles of the Alamo Drafthouse and the Austin Film Society. In her spare time, you can find her either down at the barn with her noble steed Jazz, watching as many movies as possible (often at work), cuddling with her pair of black cats and writing horror scripts, or nursing a beer in any available body of water… or doing Duolingo, where she’s currently on a 1000+ day streak.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY: MINI EP.5: THE TOWERING INFERNO

For our next minisode foray into the Faye classics of the 60s and 70s, we take the scenic elevator up to the promenade room for 1974’s The Towering Inferno. Irwin Allen’s big-budget action spectacular about a San Francisco high-rise that becomes engulfed in flames remains a hallmark in the disaster movie genre. Besides Faye, there’s Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, William Holden, Fred Astaire, Jennifer Jones, and Robert Wagner among the cavalcade of stars fighting to escape the deadliest blaze the screen has ever seen. Co-host of Pfeiffer Pfridays, Michael McClain, returns to discuss the heart-pounding moments and visual pleasures that make up The Towering Inferno!

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan?, Hollywood Royalty)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

NORMAL MOVIE REVIEW

A decade ago if you told me that Bob Odenkirk was going to have a rebirth as a brutal action movies star, I would have assumed you were talking about a Mr. Show sketch that I must have forgotten about. But here we are, first with the Nobody series, and now he teams up with director Ben Wheatley (In The Earth, Free Fire) for Normal. Bob plays Ulysses, an interim Sheriff filling in for a few months in the small and snowy town of Normal Minnesota. While everything at first seems small-townish enough, soon strange things start setting off red flags for him, and when he finds that there’s some Yakuza stuff afoot, as unlikely as that seems, he finds that a conspiracy of protecting the secret is widespread. So widespread that when he trips over the truth, the entirety of the town starts gunning for him, quite literally. Chris and Wright discuss the strange career turn of Odenkirk, the ups and downs of Normal, and how it compares to the Nobody films.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar and theater management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).

Hokum movie review

HOKUM MOVIE REVIEW

While Irish director Damian McCarthy is a big name in the serious horror fan community, especially after two fantastic films Caveat (2020) and Oddity (2024), his latest film Hokum that premiered at SXSW might just be the one to break him wide. Adam Scott plays Ohm, a successful author on a trip to stay at a remote hotel in Ireland. While he is indeed struggling over the ending of his latest book, the conclusion of his popular Conquistador trilogy, this isn’t a work trip. He has come to bring the ashes of his dead parents to a place from their past. And maybe to get drunk and consider joining them. Despite being more than just a bit of an ass to anyone he encounters, he takes a friendly likling to the bartender, so when she goes missing and no one seems like they’re looking too hard into it, he takes it upon himself to investigate. It might just all connect to an always locked Honeymoon Suite in the hotel that the employees believe is permanently closed because it is imprisoning an evil witch. Spoiler: it does. Chris and Wright felt their blood run cold while watching Hokum, easily one of the best horror flicks you’re gonna see in 2026.

OVER YOUR DEAD BODY MOVIE REVIEW

If you never got to see the 2021 Norwegian film The Trip, you missed out on a crazy, bloody, constantly surprising good time of an action, horror, comedy film. While you can still find it on Netflix, now we’ve got the American remake Over Your Dead Body. And you know what? While remakes of foreign films don’t always work out, this one is an example of getting it right. Director Jorma Taccone (Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping) takes the helm with Jason Segel as Dan and Samara Weaving as Lisa, a married couple who have really had it with each other. Right from the start it seems clear that Dan is prepping for their upcoming cabin vacation not for a good time, but to kill her. And that’s about all I want to tell you in advance about the plot. Things get CRAZY and BLOODY and really damn funny, especially when a trio of prison escapees (Timothy Olyphant, Samara Weaving, and Keith Jardine) show up. Chris and Wright say, go see it in a theater with a big crowd when it comes out because it is a movie you are gonna WANT to see with a big crowd.

POWER BALLAD MOVIE REVIEW

If you don’t recognize the name of the director of Power Ballad, John Carney, you should. He fills a niche in film that you didn’t know you needed: smart, funny, and endearing films about people for whom music plays an important part of their lives. Go see Once, Sing Street, and Begin Again and tell me then you’re still not a fan and I will say you need to seek help. Wright and Chris were very excited to see his latest film, starring Paul Rudd as a wedding singer and Nick Jonas as a former boy band star still searching for his solo career to take off. When the two meet and have a solid hang after a wedding, it seems like an unlikely friendship has been formed. But Jonas can’t seem to write a hit, and out of desperation he steals a song that Rudd had played for him that he was working on. While Power Ballad may not be the best film Carney has made, it’s still delightful and you will want to sing along.

PRETTY LETHAL MOVIE REVIEW

A troupe of ballerinas who are having trouble working together effectively somehow still get invited to a prestigious competition in Hungary. When their bus breaks down in the middle of nowhere, they find a giant hotel to give them shelter. The place is run by a former ballerina, Devora (Uma Thurman) but it’s also a mob hangout. When the son of a big mob guy decides to take a romantic rebuff from the girls’ teacher personally, in the form of a bullet to the head, the troupe finds themselves trapped in the hotel by a gang who doesn’t WANT to kill them, but what choice do they have? It will take bonding, mad ballet skills, and party drugs for this team to come together and dance a pas de deux on the heads of these baddies. Chris and Wright took a look at SXSW and decide whether Pretty Lethal has a leg to arabesque on.

READY OR NOT 2: HERE I COME MOVIE REVIEW

This sequel to the successful 2019 horror comedy begins exactly where the first one ended: Grace (Samara Weaving) having a smoke after having completely smoked her new in-laws. But a power vacuum has been created by the elimination of this rich clan, and other wealthy clans who owe their power to a dark force want to possess that high seat. Unfortunately for Grace, that means an abduction and another chase to the death. Only this time, her estranged sister (Kathryn Newton) gets swept up with her. Will Grace be able to turn more kinda-dumb rich folks into blood geysers again? I think you know the answer. Chris and Wright are here to give you the deets on Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.

Wright Sulek (The Other Boss, Trash in the Can, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, One Man’s Trash, Screener Squad)

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox. As of 2024, Wright has now been inducted into the Austin Film Critics Association as well as co-owns the One of Us network with Chris Cox.
