This week, the boys welcome filmmaker Christian Remde as they travel to a horrid place full of the most despicable characters imaginable! No, not the White House (ammirite?)! We go all the way to hell in this low budget “horror” movie that’s in such poor taste it could only have been made by evangelicals. This movie has it all – Hitler, Juggalos, and a screen-used car Fast and Furious car! We watched 2022’s Journey to Hell!

Wright Sulek (The Other Boss, Trash in the Can, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)
Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox. As of 2024, Wright has now been inducted into the Austin Film Critics Association as well as co-owns the One of Us network with Chris Cox.
Eric Samaniego (Trash in the Can, Heart/Felt, Highly Suspect Reviews)
Eric is a multi-award show watching, sometimes comedian, sometimes writer that began life as a Muppet and 1930’s screwball comedy obsessed goon and continues to carry a torch for all things felt and funny. With a passion for genre films, poor taste, and whiskey, he and co-conspirator, Wright Sulek, indulge in the best/worst films the world has to offer with One of Us’s podcast, ‘Trash in the Can’. When not podding, Eric works as an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797.

Just give us the Bob Odenkirk & David Cross action team-up already! The team that brought you John Wick and The Fall Guy are back with their follow up to their hit actioner Nobody starring Bob Odenkirk. After the events of the first film, Hutch (Odenkirk) constantly finds himself on high octane missions paying off his debt to the government. Yet his wife Becca (Connie Nielson) is trying to hold onto their family as Hutch misses out on practically every dinner. Hutch notices that there is a rift in the family unit and comes up with a plan to take a break from his deadly missions and take his family to his childhood vacation spot, Plummerville. A low-rent waterpark in Wisconsin could be the perfect place for the Mansell family to take a load off, rekindle connections, and allow the family to make memories together. But wouldn’t you know it, the town is run by a corrupt Mayor (John Ortiz) & a corrupt Sheriff (Colin Hanks) and of course Hutch finds himself in the middle of an ugly plot involving gun trafficking, drug smugglers, and nuclear arms trading. Furthermore, a higher up villain, Lendina (Sharon Stone), shows themselves to be the true threat to Hutch’s vacation plans. The film tries to hold these plots together, but ultimately lacks in character development, leaving the audience wondering why should they care about the Mansell clan. It’s disappointing compared to Odenkirk’s first attempt at an action film with Nobody and doesn’t have the same spark that made the first film so unique and special. Listen as Wright, Mike, and Ben discuss the latest by 87 North Productions.
STARRING: Bob Odenkirk, Connie Nielsen, John Ortiz, RZA, Colin Hanks, Christopher Lloyd, Sharon Stone, Colin Salmon, Gage Munroe, Paisley Cadorath

Ben Glasthal (Highly Suspect Review, Screener Squad, Breakfast Pub, Unstabletop Gamers, Video and Audio Editor)
Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. For the rest of his free time, he can be found biking, drinking craft beer, being an amateur photographer, and playing video games by himself or on Twitch. He’s best found on Instagram or Twitter as @MovieReelBen.
Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)
Mike J. McAllister is an award-winning creative jack of all trades, and is pretty competent with most of them. He is a writer, director, animator, video editor, and motion graphics artist. He has tried his hand at nearly every form of artistic expression at least once. He was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania where he fell in love with film, writing and special effects at an early age. His obsession with film would lead him to being locally known as a “human IMDb” and being on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He would study film in Pittsburgh before taking his talents to Austin. Not letting something like Tourettes get in his way, he has produced a handful of animated short films that have won awards from film festivals all over the globe. He has also written several yet-to-be-produced screenplays and TV pilots, with some of them being recognized in screenwriting competitions. He has even created motion graphics and animations for several clients, from movie theaters to Twitch streamers. When not creating or watching films, he enjoys MST3K, classic video games and buying vinyl records. He loves dogs, dropping obscure pop culture trivia and watching travel videos. He currently resides in Austin Texas and can be followed on the Instamagrams at @ohheyitsmikejm. His body of work can be found at his homepage or you can take a gander at his somewhat-impressive IMDb listing here.

Heart/Felt is a limited-series celebrating the 70th anniversary of The Muppets and the enduring legacy of Jim Henson, the quiet visionary who taught us to dream in felt, fur, and foam. Each episode invites a guest to reflect on a different chapter of Jim’s creative journey: from his early experimental films to the beloved Muppet movies, from the bold fantasy worlds of The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth to the joyful lessons of Sesame Street and its films. Along the way, we honor the artists who have carried on his legacy and explore how his gentle, subversive genius continues to shape our imaginations. Jim Henson rarely raised his voice. You had to lean in to hear him. In Heart/Felt, we lean in together to listen, to laugh, and to celebrate a life’s work that can still be heard so clearly.

Maciej Kur is back and he is once again covering the Annecy Animation Festival in France! Spidermike joins him to take a look at some of the wild new animated films from around the world coming out soon. Ready for something whimsical yet very dark? Gudo is a child-like spirit guiding souls on their final quest to find peace or be reincarnated. In a nonlinear fashion, Another World tells stories from his immortal life. One is about befriending a dead girl named Yuri who is looking for her brother. Another two deal with Gudo in the mortal world, trying to help people. You see, when humans deal with feeling of grief, revenge or self-loathing, a special seed starts to grow in their body. Gudo’s mission is to remove it before it consumes them, turning them into monstrous creatures called Wraths, spreading destruction as well becoming a target for a spiritual demon hunter. Another story deals with a princess, who after learning her father was murdered goes insane and decides go on a massacre spree through her land. This Hong Kong production takes us into a dazzling tour of fantasy worlds, both celestial and earth based. Much like it’s main character Gudo, the movie tries to blend childlike innocence with dark material… at points comically so, as it jumps between philosophical and zen scenes and some spectacular action and over-the-top gore.

Maciej Kur is back and he is once again covering the Annecy Animation Festival in France! Spidermike joins him to take a look at some of the wild new animated films from around the world coming out soon. Based on the award winning novel by Ahmadou Kourouma, this story plunges into the darkest corners of Liberia’s civil war but told from the perspective of a child. We follow a 10-year-old Guinean boy named Birahima. After the death of his crippled mother, he is sent to live with his aunt Mahan, guided by the charismatic but disreputable witch doctor Yacouba, who dazzles him with tales of Western lifestyles (Michael Jordan sneakers and all) and magical anti-bullet charms. Their journey quickly turns harrowing when their bus is ambushed by a group of child soldiers lead by the religious fanatic War Lord. To survive, Birahima is forced to join them. Shedding his innocence, he’s thrust into a brutal world of death, drugs, and ruthless survival of the fittest. As Birahima and Yacouba continue their search for aunt Mahan, they crisscross a shattered country, meeting various warlords, joining their different factions, and exposing viewers to Liberia’s complex political chaos and horrifying child rights violations (to put it mildly). Directed by Zaven Najjar, this French, Belgian, Luxembourgish, and Canadian co-production is not for the faint of heart, sadly with some mixed quality CGI animation.

From 1997 to 2010, The Hill family has comforted audiences with heart warming and thought provoking episodic adventures about a propane salesman who also sells propane accessories, navigating work life, marriage, and raising a boy that ain’t right. No matter what was thrown at Hank Hill (Mike Judge), Peggy Hill (Kathy Najimy), Bobby Hill (Pamela Adlon) and the assorted cast of neighbors, they have grown closer, discovered things about themselves to make them better people, and hence fourth vicariously helped the audience discover things about themselves to make themselves better people, I tell ya what. Seventeen years have passed since the final season. With Mike Judge, Greg Daniels, and Hulu on a reboot nostalgia binge, Kingof the Hill has returned for it’s 14th season. Hank and Peggy have been in Saudi Arabia for 8 years. Now retired and living back in Texas. Hank can re-explore his fatherhood and a new budding friendship with his now adult son Bobby Hill. Bobby, the head chef of a Texas Japanese fusion cuisine restaurant, will help his father find purpose after retirement and also find a bit of purpose of his own through romance, work, and hilarious misadventures. Bradly, Ryan, and Mike express their love of the series and what this new season gets right, gets wrong, and improves upon the foundation of the Hill legacy.

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BETTE & JOAN – EP.11 – WICKED STEPMOTHER & THE WHALES OF AUGUST
“Memories last forever.”
As our journey with these two legendary leading ladies comes to a close, we look at Bette Davis’ final movie performances, the infamous dark comedy Wicked Stepmother, which was haphazardly completed despite her walking out on the production. We also look at her final dramatic turn opposite fellow Hollywood vets Lilian Gish, Vincent Price, and Ann Sothern in the little-seen drama The Whales of August. John William Law, author of Wicked Becomes Her: Bette Davis and the Story Behind Wicked Stepmother and What Ever Happened to Mommie Dearest?, returns to talk about the two final entries in a remarkable career.

After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. There is missionary work all over the world, bringing the word of God to all sorts of places, even places you would not expect like a remote Ecuadorian volcano! Director Antonio Negret and writer Daniel Negret present another horror summer film feature in limited release, Shaman. Candice (Sara Canning) is all about those conversions and praising the Lord and his good works to all the indigenous people of this lost corner of the Ecuadorian world. The natives taken in by the faith are grateful for her beacon of light and joy. Candice’s personal source of happiness is her son Eliot (Jett Klyne) who’s about to be confirmed. Unfortunately, Eliot meets an unfortunate mishap after venturing into a cave the native children had warned him about. One pure hearted soul for Christ enters, and an ancient evil of darkness comes out. Father Meyer (Alejandro Fajardo) does all he can for Eliot but perhaps true salvation lies in the wisdom of the local Shaman (Humberto Morales). Candice must set aside pride in order to reach out to a practice and belief unlike her own to save her child from mysterious forces. Bradly, Kate, and Jordan hold communion and testify of their own faiths in higher powers, and discuss that cinematic dragon all demon possessed storytelling has been chasing since The Exorcist.

If you want a seriously freaky friday this weekend, you should probably go see Weapons. But, if you’re looking for a retread of the 2003 film with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan only now with more folks switching bodies, well, there’s Freakier Friday. Anna (Lohan) is now a music producer and manager having given up being a rock star herself (after apparently some degree of success at it) for her daughter Harper (Julia Butters). Harper is a high schooler now and would rather be surfing than studying but the real pain in her ass is a British transplant Lily (Sophia Hammons) and the two do NOT get along. When they both get in trouble, Anna is called in for a meeting with the principal along with Lily’s single dad Eric (Manny Jacinto). Sparks fly between the two and after a very Disney channel from the 2000’s style time-passing montage, they’re getting married in a few days. Which, of course, makes Lily and Harper rage queens. So enter that ol’ magic and before you can say ‘lazy cash-in’, Harper and Anna have switched bodies and Lily has switched with Harper’s grandmother, Tess (Curtis). Anyway, you get it. This film clearly was not made for Chris, Wright, and Frank but you can’t give the ‘but it’s for kids’ excuse because two of them really liked the 2003 film. But seriously, go see Weapons instead. Otherwise we might have to suffer through Freakiest Friday and please…I beg of you…don’t let that happen.

YOUR REVIEWERS
Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Deliberations of Doom)
Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar and theater management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).
Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan?)
Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.
