The Top Five Anime of the 2017 Spring Season

A few months ago I decided to offer my opinion in an article covering what I thought was the best anime of the winter season. Enough people responded positively and the shows I picked delivered that I’ve decided to come back and do it again for the spring season as well.

This season has been a little rough on your boy. If you want to see everything I watched, you can see the full list here. The winter season was a snap to run through and pick out five gems. The spring season, however, has been a lot harder to find any bright spots. I have been awash in a sea of mediocrity, lacking any spark or imagination and littered with bad CGI. Still, I found a handful of shows that showed promise and am excited to share them with you.

As with last time, here are the rules:

1. Only new anime seasons/series currently available legally count. It’s fine if the show is an adaptation, but no previously released material that’s been re-edited for a TV run.

2. I’m limiting things to new shows or existing shows with little needed effort for the viewer to dive in. I get the love for longer running series, I love several of them myself, but I want to keep the threshold to get into these shows low in the hope that people will actually check out these shows and in turn spur them to check out more anime.

3. Any adaptations will be judged as their own merit. I’m judging the show, not the work that inspired the show.

Also before we begin, I have to throw out two quick mentions. These are two shows that can’t make the list due to each being an established franchises with loads of backstory and history to unpack for those that are unfamiliar with them, but are so important that the internet may explode in my face if I fail to talk about them:

Dragon Ball Super

mainvisual_img_universe

I’m a huge Dragon Ball fan, and while Dragon Ball Super has been a bit of a mixed bag at points, the current Universal Tournament arc and the recent side stories proceeding it are awesome. Just looking at the Universe Seven team should enough to get old school fans hyped as the team features great characters from the entirety of Dragon Ball‘s run. Add in the fact that this tournament for the fate of the multiverse isn’t one on one matches but an all-out battle royal with loads of new places and faces and it is easy to see how Dragon Ball Super has freshened things up with a combination of the old and the new. If you have any affection for Dragon Ball at all, you need to give this a watch. Watch on Crunchyroll and Funimation.

Attack On Titan

1a61d42858fd2bc514d1509072122c231490852732_full

A  few years ago Attack on Titan took the world by storm. The hit manga turned anime turned out a season that had everyone talking. Then the fervor died down as fans learned that that they would have to wait what turned out to be a four year gap between seasons, but now AOT is back and looking to reclaim it’s spot on top. I don’t know if the show can live up to the hype, but I know that damn well that loads of people will be giving it a look to find out. Watch on Crunchyroll, Funimation, and Hulu.

Now onto the list proper!

5. GRANBLUE FANTASY: The Animation

granblue_fantasy___the_animation_wallpaper_by_ab_77-dauj2hvI’m bending my own rules a bit, as the first two episodes of Granblue Fantasy (which is what I watched) were released together as a TV movie back in January. The series got pushed back to the spring so everything else will be brand new material so I’m giving the series a pass. Based on game of the same name (minus the “The Animation” part, obviously) Is being handled by A-1 pictures who know how to deliver when it comes to fantasy visuals.

The story so far follows Gran, a kid from a small remote village who has dreams to go out and explore the world like his long lost father. One day he runs into a mysterious girl named Lyria who has weird magic powers and is on the run from the Erste Empire. Gran takes it upon himself to help the girl and manages to get himself killed for his troubles. Oops! Luckily, Lyria is able to revive our hero, but now their lives are bound together. Gran must now go on the run with Lyria, which is fine by him as he was looking to go on an adventure anyways. The characters are stock for anybody who has played an RPG, but the beautiful visuals and intriguing possibilities of this world are enough for me to give it the fifth spot. You can find the series on Crunchyroll and Hulu.

 4. KADO: The Right Answer

73c09099c1d75a18825e02a4ca7aadc81490400421_fullHere we have the more cerebral sci-fi entry for the season. Koujiro Shindou is a skilled negotiator working for the government in Japan. Shindou is the kind of guy that deep dives into a problem to find the greater motives behind what each party is trying to accomplish, while working to find a way that in which both side can come together to achieve those goals. It isn’t about winning, but finding balance.

However, when Shin is abducted by aliens and later appears at the top of the construct called a Kado, a being that hacks media devices around the world, he announce that he is Yaha-kui zaShunina.

Toei is the studio behind this, and I wish they would stick to using one method of animating the characters. Sometimes they use a more traditional 2D animation style, but a good portion is done using 3D animation tools that fans of things like RWBY will be able to spot right away. It leaves the product look slightly lazy and cheap, making the breaking point the writing. This show is either going to be a exciting and thought-provoking series about the nature of the human race or turn into pretentious clap-trap pretending to be “deep” without anything to say. Shindou is an interesting and fleshed out character, and the mystery behind who Yaha-kui zaShunina is and what he wants has peaked my interest. You can watch the series on Crunchyroll.

3. Alice & Zoroku

cc3a6c292d5f58064e2a75ace6be662b1478604278_fullImagine the power of a god in the hands of a little girl, limited only by her imagination and the food in her belly. Such is the case of the girl known as Sana. Having escaped from a dubious research facility with other children like her, Sana finds her way into the life of Zoroku, and good-hearted yet stern old man who is well past giving a crap and has no time for nonsense. This odd couple might not be what either side wants, but might be just what they need.

I am so glad I got to watch the second episode before writing this! The first episode has to get a lot of backstory out of the way, including a lackluster fight sequence and a CG chase scene that was outright painful to watch. Still, the characters were there and they spurred me on. I loved that Zoroku wasn’t having any of this craziness and chewed Sana out for using her powers without thinking of the consequences like property damage and potential loss of life. It showed Sana’s lack of understanding about the real world and showed that even though he is a grump, Zoroku cares deeply for the welfare of others. By the second episode, J.C.Staff finally hit with the full dose of fun and whimsy I expected from the promotional material and seemed to be a much better gauge of the show’s overall tone. It’s a show with charm to spare and I dig it! Watch it on Crunchyroll.

2. Sakura Quest

97fbe4bb84222ae9e6f1779d2005b35b1491340843_fullLife has this nasty habit of not going as planned, and that is what Sakura Quest is all about. Yoshino Koharu is a recent college graduate whose job hunting is going nowhere fast. Though from the countryside, Yoshino decided to move to Tokyo to attend college and then find work as she sees Tokyo as the center of everything and wants to avoid getting tied down in the sticks. Desperate for work she takes what she thinks is a short term gig in the small town of Manoyama’s tourism department. Turns out she signed a year-long deal to be the town’s “Queen” and help drum up interest in visiting the village. She soon befriends four other young women who, for various reasons, don’t seem to have much going on in their lives, and they bond as they try to bring people to Manoyama.

Solid character work and animation are the backbone of this series. The people at P.A. Works are behind this and are known for being good at this sort of female led comedy-drama slice of life show. I haven’t seen their other works, Hanasaku Iroha and Shirobako, in this vein,  but it’s been hard to find anything but praise for those shows which makes me even more hopeful that the misadventures of Yoshi and pals will be worth my time. The ladies due fall into easily identifiable anime “types”, but they never feel as if that is all they are. Watch on Crunchyroll and the episodes will soon be up on Funimation.

1. WorldEnd: What do you do at the end of the world? Are you busy? Will you save us?

7d1566b3b6430e2bed56ca21d34d89cb1491868080_fullWillem Kumesh is one of the last, if not the very last human left in the world. A great war ravaged the world and He was somehow put to sleep for five-hundred years. Everything and everyone he ever cared about is long gone. He now has taken to living in the edges and cracks of this new world. One day he meets a girl named Chtholly and helps guide her to a tower she wanted to visit. She then gives herself up to the authorities and asks that Willem forget about her. Confused though compliant, Willem goes about the rest of his day. Willem is soon badgered into taking a job managing a weapons warehouse. Willem has no interest in the military or fighting anymore, but the lure of easy money is enough for him to agree. Turns out these “weapons” are in fact young girls, and Chtholly is counted among them.

This show with the super long title has all the things I have been talking about, wit, charm, humor, good characterization and writing, and all that can be found in just the first episode! This team-up from studios Satelight and C2C is magic! It has excellent world building and sets up great mysteries to follow. What happened to Willem? What happened to the world?  What is the deal with these girls? I don’t want to give anything away so just do yourself a favor and watch this show! Check it out on Crunchyroll.

‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Teaser Trailer

With Star Wars Celebration in full-swing, the release of the first teaser-trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi was inevitable. As expected, the newly released teaser for the Rian Johnson directed film appears to be promising to make some pretty big changes to a galaxy far, far away.

Check it out below!

Visually, the film looks to be appropriately stunning and colorful. We see the return of Ahch-To, the beautiful water covered planet, that serves as the home of the first Jedi Temple. There are also several brief action sequences highlighted, including a space battle between the Resistance and the First Order, a ground assault involving new speeders and First Order walkers, and the destruction of what appears to be Luke Skywalker’s (Mark Hamill) Jedi Temple. Additionally, Johnson seems adamant on showcasing the sheer breadth of the film’s rich environments. Overhead and wide shots provide a sense of grandeur to the film’s physical environments, and they’re made all the more epic with Luke’s voice-over.

Aside from the vistas and visuals, we see a few short clips of several recognizable characters, including ace X-Wing pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Issace), the adorable BB-8, a recuperating Finn (John Boyega), Resistance leader Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), and a very angry looking Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). Much of the trailer’s focus is firmly on Rey (Daisy Ridely) though, and what appears to be some pretty intense training under the watchful eye of Luke.

It’s through Rey and Luke that we start to get a sense of what direction the film might be going in, hinting that Rey’s apprenticeship under the Jedi Master will be vastly different than what we (and she) might have come to expect.

star_wars_the_last_jedi_poster_1688

Easily the biggest moment in the trailer that has left countless people to obsess and speculate over is Luke’s ominous words in the final few seconds. “I only know one true thing,” Skywalker says.  “It’s time for the Jedi to end.”

Paired with John Williams’s terrific score and the reveal of the menacing red Star Wars title card, Luke’s words carry a tremendous amount of dramatic weight. Since the beginning of the saga, it’s always been assumed that the act of bringing “balance” to the force was the destruction of the Sith and the return of the Jedi; just a simple, but compelling good vs. evil story in which the light side would snuff out the dark side. However, as Luke’s newfound sentiment seems to suggest, he’s come to learn that the Jedi’s idea of “balance” was incredibly flawed, and that the Force is far more complicated and bigger than what was previously established in the films and other Star Wars media. It’s possible that Luke’s new personal philosophy is that as long as light side force users exist, dark side force users will too. With both fighting for dominance, it naturally creates an imbalance. Whatever it might be, it adds an incredibly interesting wrinkle to the Star Wars mythos that will hopefully expand upon George Lucas’s initial ideas of what the Force was over 40 years ago.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will arrive in theaters on December 15, 2017.

What about you reader? What did you think of the trailer? Is there anything that you saw that warrants speculation and examination? Be sure to let us know in the comments below!

Highly Suspect Reviews: The Fate of the Furious

Eight. How the hell are there eight Fast and the Furious films? Why? Because of groups of people like us keep LOVING THE ($#% out of them! Not ‘so bad it’s good’ so much as ‘big, dumb, and perfectly executed for maximum fun’, the series has regardless certainly had its ups and downs. This time, Jason Statham gets slid from the ‘bad guy’ category to the ‘family’ category (you knew it was coming), Vin Diesel has a secret with Charlize Theron and he has to betray his family, and lots of spy shit happens. Things blow up, Lamborghinis fall from the sky, dogs and cats sleeping together, total anarchy. But is it enjoyable? Chris, Richard, Harris, Joe and Brian (that’s right, BRIAN) give it a look-see.

Top Five ‘Invader Zim’ Episodes

Invader Zim is coming back to the small screen! Many years ago, the beloved green alien invader, Zim, and his malfunctioning looney robot sidekick, Gir, stole our hearts while simultaneously giving us mental scarring. While the series did continue in comic book form, it can’t beat the stellar voice acting and amazing combination of 3-D and 2-D animation. As we await the glorious reentrance of the series, let us reflect on some of the episodes that made the show as memorable as it was. Of course, every episode was awesome and there are too many to choose from but I have carefully picked five of my favorite episodes. FYI, I did not put these in any order because some episodes were funnier, while others were more memorable because of the disturbing content and thus ranking them would be pointless.

172887

“Bestest Friend”

We are only into the third episode of the series and we see a kid’s EYES GET RIPPED OUT. Boy does that set the bar. Before we get to that part let’s talk about the creepy beginning. Zim needs a friend to seem human so after a bunch of strange and humorous tests, he picks Keef. What Zim later finds out is that, while Keef is well-intentioned, he is a stalker. This unfortunate fact leads Zim to take drastic measures to get rid of him by the aforementioned act of ripping out Keef’s eyes. He replaces them with cybernetic ones that force Keef to believe that a random squirrel is Zim. He then later explodes. This episode sets another precedent in that it lets the audience know that when Zim is faced with a problem, he will crush it by the most brutal and sadistic manner possible.

1x10a-Plague-Of-Babies-invader-zim-24218600-500-282

“Plague of Babies”

Monster babies! They drool acid, have razor sharp teeth, and can morph together into giant baby blob creature; that also has a digital face for some reason. What’s great about this episode is that it is layered and does great foreshadowing. In the beginning, Zim notices what seems like a baby is watching him in his alien form. Of course, Zim takes drastic measures in investigating what seems like a silly matter. Although, as the episode progresses we notice odd details as well. In one of the homes, there is a collection of pictures of the suspect baby that go on for seven years. Yet the baby did not age. Ultimately, it is revealed that the babies are aliens who became accidently stranded and were forced to assimilate into the human population. The battle between Zim and the alien babies is actually quite intense because of the latter’s aforementioned abilities. Zim is victorious in the end, though in his signature sadistic way. He uses a device to essentially make the alien babies brain dead.

1x12a-Bolognius-Maximus-invader-zim-24241002-1360-768

“Bolognius Maximus”

Oh, this episode is so much fun. Especially, since it is one of the instances when Zim’s escalations backfires. Seeing two characters slowly turn into bologna and then having them deal with it in such a dramatic way cannot be put into words how hilarious it is. The episode begins with Dib throwing lunch meat at Zim who then retaliates by altering the former’s DNA to become bologna. Dib then later puts Zim through the same process and they then have to work together to deal with their circumstances. This episode really highlighted the prowess of the writers and the voice actors. The writers can come up with the most ludicrous premises and the voice actors can sell them. Moments like when Dib finds out that he is “delicious” which prompts him to ask his sister to taste him are just gold. Her initial repulsion is justified, but later on she just casually takes a chunk out of him and eats it.

1x12b-Game-Slave-2-invader-zim-24241978-500-282

“Game Slave 2”

This episode is one of the few ones where Zim is nowhere in it. Instead, the focus is brought to Gaz and her journey to getting a new game. While we have seen Gaz in action before, this episode places her in the Zim role by having her escalate a situation to retaliate against someone. In this case, it is against fellow gamer Iggins who lies to get the final copy of a game that she also wants. The episode then comprises of Gaz stalking and tormenting him to relinquish it. There is also another subplot which involves Dib getting lost in a car garage and meeting the rat people and the whole situation is completely irrelevant and random. The episode had so many fun horror cliches like Gaz suddenly appearing through thundering and lightning and writing threatening messages on a bathroom mirror. In the end, the audience takes away two notes: Gaz is awesome and not to be trifled with.

1x19b-Dib-s-Wonderful-Life-Of-Doom-invader-zim-24303000-500-282

“Dib’s Wonderful life of Doom”

What if episodes are always fun. This one is centered on Dib and the scenario is that everything went well for him. The beginning of the episode is Dib throwing a muffin at Zim and that night the former is granted superpowers. His whole life is played out from him defeating Zim, rescuing humanity from invasion, and discovering all of the supernatural/paranormal activities of the world. At some point towards the middle, it is heavily implied that the whole situation is a facade because there are subtle moments when it is revealed. There are also points that go against the nature of the show because we know that their universe is comprised mostly of morons so the fact that they listen to Dib is farfetched. The simulation finally ends and Zim reveals that he just wanted Dib to confess to throwing the muffin at him. The look and sound of despair emanating from Dib after all is revealed is a little depressing but it was interesting to see a scenario where Dib won.

Well, there you have it, a list of what I consider my favorite episodes. Now, while you are commenting on how terrible it is and that I have no taste, don’t forget to mention what you consider to be the best episodes and how excited you are for the new series.
