THE BEEKEEPER MOVIE REVIEW

Jason Statham. Identify Theft. Bees. What do these things have in common? Well, the new David Ayer action movie of course! Jason Statham stars as the titular beekeeper who is living a modest life as a companion of sorts to Eloise (Phylicia Rashad). Once Eloise is scammed out of all her money by an evil corporation led by Josh Hutcherson, Statham’s Adam Clay takes vengeance to a whole new level. As Clay’s wrath climbs to the top of the organization, Wallace Westwyld, played by Jeremy Irons, tries to control the situation by uncovering Clay’s past. We find that Statham isn’t some ordinary beekeeper, but an ultra elite commando…beekeeper! A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

Eric Samaniego (Trash in the Can, Highly Suspect Reviews)

Eric is a multi-award show watching, sometimes comedian, sometimes writer that began life as a Muppet and 1930’s screwball comedy obsessed goon and continues to carry a torch for all things felt and funny. With a passion for genre films, poor taste, and whiskey, he and co-conspirator, Wright Sulek, indulge in the best/worst films the world has to offer with One of Us’s podcast, ‘Trash in the Can’. When not podding, Eric works as an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797.

DESTROY ALL NEIGHBORS MOVIE REVIEW

Welcome to January, or as the industry likes to call it “dump month.” Basically this time of year, studios release their lower budget fair that may not do well during Summer or Holidays, but hey… studio needs to make some money back, or leave it to die so it can be a write-off. Regardless, this time of year can produce some gems that normally would have been covered up by something bigger at the box office. This year has already produced a favorite for us, it’s called Destroy All Neighbors. There’s blood, gore, puppets, prog-rock… everything one needs to have a good time, right? Jonah Ray Rodrigues stars as Will, a dude that always gets into his own way, paired up against Vlad (played by Alex Winter) who seems a bit off. There’s plenty of character actors that pop their heads in (hopefully not off) like Kumail Nanjiani and Thomas Lennon. Plus the special effects are on point and the puppets… so many puppets! Don’t take our word for it (Mike, Lewayne, and Chad), do yourself a favor and check out this movie on Shudder.

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). GOOD GRIEF MOVIE REVIEW

On a late night talk show, a famous west end actor recounted the grief felt when his mother passed away. In summation he said “…So, I hope this grief stays with me because it’s all the unexpressed love that I didn’t get to tell her”. Wise words from a thespian that is not a part of the cast of this movie. Netflix presents a film written, directed, and starring Dan Levy, Good Grief. The story follows a suddenly widowed artist named Marc (Levy) whose young adult novelist husband Oliver (Luke Evans) passes away in a tragic accident after a Christmas Party. After a year of grieving, Marc finds himself in Paris in an apartment that his late beloved owned on the downlow. Accompanied by his best friends Sophie (Ruth Negga) and Thomas (Himesh Patel), the trio will discover things about Oliver they never knew, and more importantly discover things about themselves, their friendship, and the enduring power of love. Bradly, Frank, and Drew open up and discuss the success of Dan Levy’s Schitt’s Creek, the movie star-power of Ruth Negga, and get personal with their own life tragedies like love, loss, and jury duty.

A MURDER AT THE END OF THE WORLD SERIES REVIEW

After the abrupt and cruel cancellation of the popular and surreal Netflix sci-fi series The OA in 2019, fans have been waiting to see what the collaborative creative team Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij would conjure up next. The answer is, Hulu/FX’s A Murder at the End of the World. Hacker and true crime novelist Darby Hart (Emma Corrin) has been invited to a top secret retreat in Iceland by tech bajillionare and self proclaimed future savior of the world Andy Ronson (Clive Owen). She finds herself surprised by an unexpected reunion there with her estranged lover Bill (Harris Dickinson) who assisted Darby in solving a serial killer case, but at the cost of their relationship. Darby reflects on their relationship, but before she can rekindle the flames of the past, the would-be couple once again find themselves at the center of yet another murder mystery, while trapped at a billionaire’s retreat, far from civilization, and surrounded by the brightest minds on the planet. With her intuition and state of the art tech, Darby will commit to solve the murder, and this time it’s personal. Bradly, Neil, and Jena pick up the pace in dissecting this very slow burn murder mystery, discuss the array of acting talents, and ponder whether or not an artificial intelligence story holds up when the tech is advancing faster then the story about them.

Neil Anderson (Screener Squad)

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

Jena Perry (Screener Squad)

Jena Perry. Aka Luna. Aka Dion. Aka Memori. Aka Dog whisperer. Aka whiskey connoisseur. As you can see, depending on when you met this Oakland, California native, you have experienced a completely different person, each time. MEAN GIRLS MOVIE REVIEW

First off, if you haven’t seen the original 2004 movie Mean Girls, stop everything and go watch that first. It’s a comedy classic (even if it did crib A LOT from 1989’s Heathers) and it still holds up. I’m going to assume you’re going to enjoy it because it’s that good. Now, decide whether or not you want to see a tech-updated 4th wall breaking, musical version of essentially the exact story (with minor changes here and there). Oh, I should mention, a pretty darn good new version at that. If you’re still going, “Nah, I’m good”, then skip this new Mean Girls. Otherwise, get your friends and go to the theater to have a darn good time. Neither Chris, Kim, Wright, nor Frank put this one in their Burn Books.

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. NIGHT SWIM MOVIE REVIEW

Ray Waller (Wyatt Russell) is a former pro baseball player who has been forced to retire because of illness. His wife Eve (Kerry Condon) isn’t completely upset because they’ve always been forced to move a lot because of his career and now they can settle down and grow roots. Finding a house with a large swimming pool and a more than reasonable asking price is a huge boon, as Ray needs swimming exercises to help with his illness. Unfortunately, the pool also comes with the bonus of…something. Or maybe somethings. Ray starts mysteriously to recover from his sickness but the rest of the family is having creepy experiences in the pool. What’s going on? The writers have to tie themselves in knots to get to where they want the explanation to go, and Chris, Wright, Alan, Frank have much less difficulty calling out this movie for being all wet.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). REBEL MOON PART ONE: CHILD OF FIRE

A village in need. Slow-motion action. A team of heroes. Space horses. Glowy swords. A robot named Jimmy. Even more slow-motion action. Zack Snyder’s latest film, Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, dropped on Netflix a couple of weeks ago and drew A LOT of attention. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

MERRY LITTLE BATMAN MOVIE REVIEW

Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Batdad! Happy Belated Holidays. If you’re not quite hungover from all the parties, annoying family members, and binge eating… you may want to check out Merry Little Batman streaming on Prime. It’s a mashup of everything you love about the Batman universe and the best Christmas movies. It’s Christmas time in Gotham (which normally is riddled with injustice and rogue villains) but the city is bustling with good cheer. At Wayne Manor, Bruce gives 8 year old Damian his first utility belt, but he is suddenly called by the Justice League to assist, which leaves Damian to his new “toy”. Which is abruptly stolen by two “Wet Bandit” types who work for the Joker… and from there, I’ll leave it to you. This movie has a lot of love to it. Not only is Bruce a good Batdad, the creators who made this also nurtured it like a child. Molding it until maturity so it could be the best movie it could. Join Jordan, Mike, and Chad and geek out on a new holiday classic that the whole Bat Family can enjoy.

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal Smallville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked.
