SUNCOAST MOVIE REVIEW

Back in the 90’s, a famous writer/comedian/late night talk show host did a recurring bit of what the world would be like in the year 2000. Come back to us Conan O’Brien, we miss you. In the distant past, 2004-6 was a time of Juicy T-shirts, PussyCat Dolls, Tom Brady and the Patriots Super Bowls, and the ongoing debate of Terri Schiavo. Who has the right to say if she lives or dies? Her parents, her spouse, or God as interpreted through Florida Televangelists? In the midst of this, a high school teenager named Doris (Nico Parker) is burdened with several responsibilities including taking care of her bed ridden non verbal brother who’s slowly passing away from brain cancer. Her single mother Kristine (Laura Linney) is working overtime at a job keeping her son as comfortable as possible in his final days. To complicate matters, the hospice Suncoast in which their family member has been moved to has additional security to hold up against a sea of protests due to Terri Schiavo staying there as well. Doris and Kristine are at odds and separated by complicated emotions as Doris strikes up new friendships with teens from her school as well as a protestor named Paul (Woody Harrelson) while Kristin struggles to remember and reconnect with her daughter as she once did long ago before her son got sick. Bradly, Frank, and Melina groove to the vibes of post-2002 while discussing personal issues of hospice, praise the rising star of Nico Parker as she shines alongside the always effervescent Laura Linney, and name drop everyone’s favorite mother in law on oneofus.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

DUNE PART 2 MOVIE REVIEW

It’s part two time for the latest adaptation of Frank Herbert’s beloved sci-fi novel Dune, and sadly, the theater that Chris, Wright, and Marco saw it at did not have the sandworm fleshlight popcorn buckets. But we were still all in for this even better second half of the tale. With the Atreides all but wiped out by House Harkonnen and the Emperor’s Sardaukar troops, Paul and his mom have to prove themselves to the nomadic Fremen in order to oust Harkonnen again. But does this mean Paul has to fulfill the prophecies of the Bene Gesserit and become the chosen one? And how does one deal with knowing that the path forward is filled with so much horror? Director Denis Villeneuve really knocks this one out of the sandlot and your critics were totally here for it.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS SERIES REVIEW

Greek gods love tormenting humans. Sometimes they teach tales of morality, sometimes they test the resolve of mankind, and sometimes just to troll and mock. On those rare occasions though, unless you’re Zeus on a Tuesday, sometimes the gods walk among humans to fall in love. Disney Plus presents a new adaptation of the beloved young adult novels by Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Percy Jackson (Walter Scobell) a dyslexic pre-teen, has always had dreams about the ocean, being left behind, and being watched. Dreams bend into reality when the nightmares of his sleep step into the waking hours of his day. His mother Sally (Virginia Kull), long time friend Grover (Aryan Simhadri) and even school principal Chiron (Glynn Turman) seem to be in on the conspiracy but are putting protecting Percy above explaining the pursuing monsters and darkness (good call!). After his mother makes a sacrifice the way that only the unconditional love of a parent can do, Grover and Percy escape to camp half-blood and discovers his mother in the throes of romance for the God Poseidon, who turns out to be Percy’s father. Outcast to the prince of tides, percy is tasked with a quest. He and his best friend Grover, and new half-blood companion Annabeth (Leah Jefferies) must embark on a journey to find Zeus’s missing bolt of lightning, and rescue the parent that has always been there for him in the belly of the underworld. Bradly, Harmoni, and Jena discuss the second swing at bat of the adaptation and their relationship with the book series (or lack thereof), contemplate the age appropriate casting of the half god kids, and pay tribute to Lance Reddick, the man the myth the legend.

As you can see, depending on when you met this Oakland, California native, you have experienced a completely different person, each time. SKELETONS IN THE CLOSET MOVIE REVIEW

There’s nothing worse than wasted talent on a dumb movie. Case and point; the movie Skeletons in the Closet, now streaming on Shudder… It’s just bad. Not “good/bad” or “haha funny bad.” It’s just bad. Mark (Terrence Howard) and his wife Valentina (Valery M. Ortiz) are in trouble. They have serious financial problems and Mark just got fired. And their daughter has brain cancer and they need 50 grand for surgery. Out of desperation, Mark turns to his brother Andres (Cuba Gooding Jr.) for financial help and it’s not gonna come from a legit or safe place. Also there’s a ghost or something, a fortune teller (Sally Kirkman) predicting doom, and more stuff from movies that don’t feel like they belong together. T.C. put it best in that it feels like two movies. It’s unfocused, tone deaf to its own universe, has terrible vfx, and less than stellar camera work. If you decide to watch it, let us know your thoughts in the comments. Lewayne, T.C., and Chad had to hire a fortune teller so they could know if they’ll ever be able to erase this movie from their brains…

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. DRIVE-AWAY DOLLS MOVIE REVIEW

What do you do if you’re in the middle of a road trip in a rental (or a ‘drive-away’ in this case) and discover that hidden in your car is some bizarre contraband and some real bad dudes are after you to get it? If you’re Jamie and Marian, apparently you just have a lot more sex. These two friends couldn’t be more different from each other. Jamie (Margaret Qualley) is a precariously uninhibited free spirit who picks up women pretty much anywhere she goes for sexy shenanigans. Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan) wants love but can’t break out of her shell enough to meet anyone. But being in danger might be what makes these two work together. That’s the romantic premise of Ethan (and only Ethan) Coen’s new absurdist road trip LGBTQ+ comedy Drive-Away Dolls. And while this has ‘cult classic’ written all over it and our reviewers certainly enjoyed it, Chris, Mike, Alan, and Frank can’t help but doubt its widespread appeal. And, for once, are significantly less risqué than the film they are reviewing.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). Why, to a streaming 8 episode series of course! Creators Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane bring you a very new take on Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Our two star-crossed lovers, played by Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, find themselves placed together by the deep cover super secret organization they work for. They are given the code names John and Jane Smith and pose as a married couple as their cover for performing espionage provided by a mysterious person on the other end of a text conversation that they call Hi Hi. As they work together the two learn more about each others pasts, what makes them tick, their pet peeves, their turn ons, their favorite kind of internet websites, and what dreams they have for the future. Can their hot chemistry survive the spy game, and who is it that’s giving the orders? Bradly, Harmoni, and Jordan discuss the abundance of wonderful guest stars and cameos present in this rom com drama caper, gush over the strong foot forward 2024 has provided, and discuss short series and a form of therapy for the love ones in your life.

Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Plus she can curse at us and not get fired….so bonus!

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. TRUE DETECTIVE – NIGHT COUNTRY REVIEW

Time is a flat circle…again. True Detective is back with its 4th season now with showrunner and director Issa López. This season, aptly named Night Country, takes us to Ennis, Alaska where the town is preparing for the grueling six month period of darkness. On the eve of the first day of dark, a group of scientists from the local Tsalal research facility go missing and Chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) leads the investigation. Former partner and now State Trooper Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) pushes her way into the case since a severed tongue is found at the crime scene which may belong to a victim from an unsolved case that haunts her to this day. As the scientists are discovered in what may be the most gruesome popsicle ever conceived, Danvers and Navarro reluctantly pair up to solve the grisly murder and uncover darker secrets that plague the town of Ennis. Wright, Sarah Jane, and Neil discuss the newest season’s change from the gothic, grimy, and sweaty previous seasons to the cold and desolate night country. Does True Detective’s newest season hold a candle to 1st season’s masterpiece or does it shrine through the darkness as a successful entry? Listen as they discuss True Detective: Night Country!

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). MADAME WEB MOVIE REVIEW

Sony Pictures’ spin-off Spider-verse keeps getting more bizarre in the way it plucks side characters from Spider-Man’s story and reinvents them for its own purposes. None more so than Madame Web, which takes the 90-something year old clairvoyant and makes her Dakota Johnson. In this world, Spider-Man doesn’t exist yet (it’s set in 2003) and Johnson, who plays Cassie Webb, is the orphaned daughter of a woman who died in the Amazon after finding a rare spider that a group of super-spider-people let bite her in an attempt to save her life after she was shot by one of her teammates who wanted the spider for himself (that was all in the first ten minutes of the film). She was pregnant with Cassie at the time and so, many years later, wham: superpowers. Sort of. The bite basically makes you into Spider-Man, as her mother’s murderer discovered (Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims) and with that comes precognitive dreams but all he ever sees is three teenage girls with their own spider-powers who, in the future, murder him. He uses his resources to track them down and now he has finally found them. His bad luck that through, I guess coincidence (whatever, movie), so has Cassie, whose newly hatched pre-cog powers give her visions of them being murdered by evil spider-dude and is set on saving them. And so the chase begins. Chris, Wright, Spider-Mike, and Nathan discuss this failure and how it is slightly less failure than Sony’s other spider-verse failures.

Nathan Flynn (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

Michael Riojas (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal Smallville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked.
