DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 340: DIE FOR DIGITAL NOISE

Chris and Wright have a grand ol’ time with today’s stack, despite having very mixed results. From a giant alligator Jaws rip-off cheapie to one of the best terrible films we’ve ever seen. From an 80s forgotten Gene Hackman/Matt Dillon international spy thriller to a delightful feminist French crime comedy, we’ve got some oddball stuff to discuss this week. Check it out.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox.

KNUCKLES SERIES REVIEW

It’s been thirty years since Knuckles made his Sega Genesis debut in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Now the chaotic mascot races onto Paramount Plus in a 6 episode mini series before Sonic The Hedgehog 3 lands in theaters this December. The master emerald has been protected and the evil Doctor Robotnik has been defeated. Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) enjoy their new found family and soak in the sunshine’s rays of peace. Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba) however is having an existential crisis. A warrior wishes not for down time, but rather enemies to challenge their warrior spirit and light ablaze their fire of passion. After being visited by ghost Chief Pachacamac (Christopher Lloyd) , Knuckles realizes that to maintain focus he must teach his tribe’s ways to a new champion. Enter Wade Whipple (Adam Pally). After losing a spot on the bowling team, the Deputy of Green Hill Zone is feeling like a total loser. Together with Knuckles he’ll learn the power within and discover that the true hero doesn’t earn all the trophies but rather refuses to give up when the chips are down. It’s a road trip to enlightenment featuring the comedic hijinks of Stockard Channing, Edi Patterson, Kid Cudi, Ellie Taylor, Rory McCann, Rob Huebel, Paul Scheer, Cary Elwes, and more. Bradly, Jordan, and Mike discuss their history with Sega, their favorite actor cameos and gags from the show, and ponder why so many major icons from Japan take a back seat as secondary characters in Hollywood productions.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). INFESTED MOVIE REVIEW

Creature Features are mostly a thing of the past… post-WWII and pre-space race, a lot of films dealt with the fallout (pun intended) of nuclear weapons. In 50’s cinema, you had all sorts of creepy bugs being super-sized by human hubris. Movies like Tarantula, The Deadly Mantis, and Earth Vs. Spider freaked out movie audiences of the past. Today the horror market is more diverse, so we’re not constantly barraged with giant insects… until today. Coming fresh out of France is Infested. The story follows Kaleb, who collects bugs, lizards, snakes, and really anything creepy. He finds a large spider for sale at his local bodega and takes it home. Turns out this is one spider that is decidedly not domesticable. When it escapes before you know it there are spiders everywhere in Kaleb’s low-income apartment building and they’re growing and breeding…inside people. Even worse, when the police find out there’s something incredibly dangerous loose in the building, they barricade it and Kaleb and his friends are trapped within. If you hate spiders… man you are going to hate this movie. What this movie does really well is creep the hell out of you… really sets the mood. What this movie does alright is it’s character development… It’s a little hollow, which makes inevitable deaths of minor characters later, fall flat. But don’t let that be a setback, this movie is fun, and definitely something to torture your spouse (who hates bugs) with. That’s Jordan, Drew, and Chad approved.

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. I SAW THE TV GLOW MOVIE REVIEW

The director of experimental art-horror hit from last year, We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, Jane Schoenbrun, returns with their latest experimental art-scifi hit, I Saw the TV Glow. The film follows Owen, who first we meet in 7th grade (briefly played by Ian Foreman). He is very withdrawn but nonetheless finds an unusual connection with similarly withdrawn 9th grader Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine) through her obsession with a teen horror tv show, The Pink Opaque. Although Owen is only able to catch one episode after lying about a sleepover at a friend’s house but actually going to Maddy’s to watch the latest installment of the show, the obsession kicks in. Being too young to stay up till the show’s late air time, even when the movie shifts two years later, Owen (with Justice Smith now in the role) still can’t watch it, but Maddy starts sending him tapes which he treats almost like religious icons, watching and rewatching the episodes. When Maddy disappears one day, and the show is abruptly canceled, you’d think Owen would eventually move on, but events lead him to question his world and whether the show might actually be where his reality lies. Abstract with a strong bent towards music and imaginatively shot sequences, the films of Lynch or perhaps more suitably with it’s teen themes, Donnie Darko might come to mind when thinking of comparisons for I Saw The TV Glow. But Chris, Wright, Mike, and Ben talk about how the film is really it’s own thing, and that it’s going to be completely for some folks their new Buffy Season 2, but for others it’ll be more of a Season 7.

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. NEW LIFE MOVIE REVIEW

Once upon a time you dressed so fine. Threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn’t you? People say ‘beware doll, you’re bound to fall.’ You thought they were all kidding you. You used to laugh about everybody that was hanging out. Now you don’t talk so loud. Now you don’t seem so proud about having to be scrounging your next meal. How does it feel to be without a home, like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone. There ya go, the entire repeating soundtrack of New Life. This film follows a mysterious woman on the run (Hayley Erin) and the resourceful fixer assigned to bring her in (Sonya Walger), this film blends horror, sci-fi, heavy drama, and the cat and mouse genre, as these two women’s stories inexorably link. The stakes may very well be apocalyptic. Or, it may be a very plodding, uneven indie film from a first time director. Kimberly, Jason, and T.C. pull apart the tangled mess of this movie, which they went into hoping for something akin to an A24 movie and were surprised to discover what it actually is. Be prepared to have Bob Dylan lodged in your head for awhile after watching this.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. He has released two feature films, The Princess Knight and A Christmas Sunset. He thrives on collaboration and the thrill of sharing stories in all forms.

Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

Jason Fisher (Screener Squad)

Born in New Orleans, brought up in Austin, and raised by cinema, Jason is an animator and filmmaker with decades of experience working in the arts. Before even graduating high school, Jason was animating and podcasting with the Austin-based movie review site Spill.com. From this formative experience, he gained an eclectic taste and knowledge that he carried into a rich career working in the animation industry. Notable projects include Marvel’s Hit Monkey, FXX’s Legion, Netflix’s America: The Motion Picture, and working for companies including Nickelodeon, Rooster Teeth, PBS Kids, and many more. As a cineast, it’s his belief that his favorite movie is one that he hasn’t seen yet. His thirst for great art is unquenchable, whether that means consuming it or contributing to it himself.

UNFROSTED MOVIE REVIEW

Jerry Seinfeld presents Unfrosted, his feature length directorial debut that offers a fictionalized account of 1963 Michigan business rivals Kellogg’s and Post competing to create a crusted fruit pastry that could change breakfast forever. This is the origin of the Pop Tart. Told as though it were as important and as dramatic as the space race, this absurdist comedy features dozens of cameos from Seinfeld’s comedic friends, several of his vintage cars, and even several true facts about the legendary breakfast tart. Kimberly, Mike, and T.C. discuss their cereal allegiances, appreciation for Jerry’s comedic sensibilities, and his career obsession with cereal. And as dramatic the rift is between Kellogg’s and Post, it turns out there may be a growing rift among the Screener Squad on which cereal brand is best. Spoons have been drawn. A line of milk separates the trio. Where will you land on this battlefield?

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). EVIL DOES NOT EXIST MOVIE REVIEW

Director/Writer Ryûsuke Hamaguchi won Global acclaim with the 2022 Oscar winning Best International Feature Film Drive My Car. His first follow up feature parks the car in the garage and takes us up to a secluded mountain paradise. Evil Does Not Exist follows Takumi (Hitoshi Omika) a single father and widower who lives in the peaceful village of Mizubiki. He, his young daughter Hana (Ryo Nishikawa), and the entire community have been invited to a meeting with a major corporation who wants to turn their perfectly balanced ecosystem into a glamping location. For those not tight with any luxury jerks, glamping is glamorous camping; a form of camping involving accommodations and facilities more luxurious than those associated with traditional camping. The community brings up several rational and serious concerns that if not taken seriously could lead to serious consequences to the environment. The PR spokespeople, Takahashi (Ryuji Kosaka) and Mayuzumi (Ayaka Shibutanji), are aware that none of these concerns will be addressed with too many deadlines and high financial stakes. Mother nature will have to take one for the bottom line. So, to try to calm things down, the PR duo shadow Takami in hopes to get a staple of the community on their side. Bradly, Jason, and Drew ponder the deep meaning of existence through the filming of trees. Do we all exist in a grand circle of forever within nature’s warm glowing warming glow? Or should the Lorax be run down by a Mazda CX-5 SUV and tossed behind the dumpster of a Denny’s parking lot? Our debate and answers may surprise you!

Before even graduating high school, Jason was animating and podcasting with the Austin-based movie review site Spill.com. From this formative experience, he gained an eclectic taste and knowledge that he carried into a rich career working in the animation industry. Notable projects include Marvel’s Hit Monkey, FXX’s Legion, Netflix’s America: The Motion Picture, and working for companies including Nickelodeon, Rooster Teeth, PBS Kids, and many more. As a cineast, it’s his belief that his favorite movie is one that he hasn’t seen yet. His thirst for great art is unquenchable, whether that means consuming it or contributing to it himself.

Drew Tinnin (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Deliberations of Doom)

KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

The apes and their planet return in their tenth overall outing in this brand new (300 years after the last film) story. Caesar and his revolution have become more of a legend than anything else in this world of separated ape tribes. The Eagle Clan live peacefully, with their trained birds and an admonition from the elders: don’t go into the valley (the entrance to which is an imposingly dark tunnel through a mountain). But when a young hunter named Noa (Owen Teague) is forced to make a night hunt, he is the first to witness invaders from beyond the tunnel who burn down his home, kill his father, abduct everyone else still alive, and leave him for dead. On his quest to save his family he will team up with a wise orangutan named Raka (Peter Teague) who follows the truth of Caesar’s words, and a human who can actually talk and isn’t a feral idiot, Mae (Freya Allen). They will have to content with the dominating ape overlord Proximus (Kevin Durand) who wants to build a kingdom of apes(natch). The first film in the series directed by Wes Ball, best known for the Maze Runner films, he’s got big shoes to fill after the widely loved previous trilogy by Rupert Wyatt and Matt Reeves. Chris, Wright, Jason, and Nathan take on this 2 hours plus adventure film and decide how much of it is apes, and how much is Horizon Zero Dawn.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. INVINCIBLE SEASON 2 REVIEW

Invincible is back! I mean it was back, and then 4 episodes in, Amazon was like “just kidding, still working on it.” but our favorite teenage Viltrumite Mark is back for another soul crushing season. After Omni-Man (Nolan) leaves Earth, Mark deems it crucial to take up the mantle, hopefully without his father’s homicidal tendencies. Debbie is also dealing with the fallout of marrying Nolan and his abrupt departure. It’s all a big mind fuck. Invincible is supposed to be subversive to the traditional comic book hero genre. Like Watchmen and many others, Invincible makes one question giving gods so much power and authority over the common earthling. Especially after what Nolan does in season 1, it’s hard to trust anyone. Throw on your spandex and jump in with Harmoni, Spidermike, and Chad!

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. Michael Riojas (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal Smallville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. SHOGUN SERIES REVIEW

FX on Hulu presents James Clavell’s classic novel adapted into a mini series created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, Shōgun. Marooned on the Islands of Japan during the Edo era in the 1600’s, English navigator John Blackthorn (Cosmo Jarvis) plans to persuade the powerful bushō and lord of the Kantō, Yoshi Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) to destroy his enemies of the queen. However, the world Blackthorn is from is not the world he is imprisoned in. Yoshi Toranaga sees the English pilot as one of several pawns to use against the five other regents. With the Taiko recently passed and his heir far too young to take his place. Lord Toranaga looks to restore the rule of his ancestors as shōguns. Translating between Blackthorn and Toranaga is the loyal Toda Mariko, a young woman with a mysterious past that ties into the decisions of the future of Japan. Mariko is an intelligent young woman and Catholic convert who perhaps understands this game of chess better than any man. Bradly, Neil, and Harmoni discuss the adaptations of the past and compare the most recent effort by the booming streaming service, enchant with descriptions of every frame of this very big budget mini series, and decide if the one cliche has been put to rest or if the white savior trope reigns supreme in Edo era Japan.

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.
