The Most Precious of Cargoes Movie Review

INFESTATION: ANNECY ANIMATION FEST 2024 – INTRO AND “THE MOST PRECIOUS OF CARGOES”

Our man in Poland, Maciej Kur, gets to go to the Annecy Animation Festival every year (lucky bastard) and bring us back news of what’s good. This year, he again teams up with Spidermike to lay out what’s coming soon in the world of animation for the rest of us non-festival attendees to look forward to. After they do a bit of introduction, Maciej talks about The Most Precious of Cargoes, the latest film by director Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist). Based on the novel of the same name, it follows a young Jewish girl who survives the Holocaust by her father throwing her from the train headed to Auschwitz.

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal Smallville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. He lives in Austin with his beloved Dachshund-Maltese and trusted sidekick, Dean. He can also be heard on RageSelect. He can be found on Twitter and Instagram.

STAR WARS: THE ACOLYTE SERIES REVIEW

The Knights of One Of Us, Melina, Neil, and TC, gather in the Jedi Council Chambers to discuss the newest entry in the Star Wars canon, The Acolyte. This mystery-thriller tells the dark tale of of Mae (Amandla Stenberg), an assassin of Jedi who has been trained in the ways of the Force. She is targeting four specific members of the Order connected to her past, including Master Indara (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae of Squid Game). The only way to track down this murderous young woman and stop her before it’s too late is for Master Sol to bring his a former Padawan and Mae’s twin sister, Osha, out of her self exile. Though she has long since given up her Force practice, Osha is still brimming with potential. This show delves into murder, secrets of the past, and the threat of an emerging Dark Side not seen in the galaxy for centuries, all set in the final days of the High Republic Era, 100 years before The Phantom Menace. While the Squad has many thoughts on the practical locations, production design, and easily some of the most complex and impressive lightsaber fights in all of live-action Star Wars canon, they also have more than a few things to say about the overall quality of the series and its place among the other canonical Star Wars TV shows.

In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Highly Suspect Reviews: Deadpool and Wolverine

Deadpool and Wolverine Movie Review

DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE MOVIE REVIEW

Deadpool is finally in the MCU for real. He made the cut. He gets his third movie. But this time he’s bringing Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine with him on an adventure to save their universes from the ‘sacred timeline’ wiping them out (re: the MCU). So, we gotta reference the Time Variance Authority from the Loki TV series and bring in Matthew MacFadyen as Mr. Paradox, a manager at the TVA who gets a little over excited about pruning timelines. But he’s not really the threat. The real problem they have is Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin) Professor Xavier’s evil twin sister who rules over a Mad Max type wasteland peppered with cast-offs from dead Marvel film series. We certainly don’t want to spoil for you here WHICH cast-offs, but Chris, Wright, Mike, and Nathan have PLENTY to say about Deadpool and Wolverine and that’s before we even get into a full-spoilers discussion (don’t worry, we give plenty of warning). Check out their review here.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. Highly Suspect Reviews: Twisters

Twisters Movie Review

TWISTERS MOVIE REVIEW

In this age of rapidly changing weather, as disasters begin to significantly increase, it’s par for the course for Hollywood to parallel it with action films. So let’s resurrect a film from 1996, beloved by some, make it plural, and largely have no other connection to the original. It’s Twisters and now there are…more tornadoes. Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is an ex-storm chaser (after a seriously terrible mistake that took out 90% of her friends) with a sixth sense for storm movement, much like Bill Paxton’s character in the original. Despite her understandable trauma, she is convinced to come back out to the field by her one surviving friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) who has hooked up with a well-funded group who are using military tech to get enormous amounts of new data on the tornados. But, of course, it means getting up close. Storm chasing is a hobby at this point with lots of amateur teams piling into their RVs and looking to get famous for YouTube weather videos. The king of this is Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), a well-known and beloved adrenaline junky who pulls stunts like launching fireworks into the tornadoes. But he might be more than he appears, and Javi’s funders might not be as altruistic as they present themselves. So it’s more rural fast driving, goofy side characters, dangerous storms, and hand-wringing ‘but the science!’. Only now it’s got 100% more bad country music. This film may be best remembered for being the dawn of Glen Powell (to wide audiences) as the massive movie star he’s certainly going to become, but Chris, Wright, Nathan, and Ben were mixed about the rest.

Interview with the Director of “The Glassworker” Usman Riaz

INTERVIEW WITH THE DIRECTOR OF “THE GLASSWORKER” USMAN RIAZ

Our own man on the ground in Europe, Maciej Kur, covered the amazing Annecy Animation Festival for us again this year. In addition to all the separate podcast reviews he has coming up with us for films he saw there, he got a chance to sit down with animator Usman Riaz to talk about his incredible new film “The Glassworker”. You can check out the trailer for the film right here and a look at the making of it right here.

Maciej: Do you remember seeing your first animated movie in a theater?

Usman: Yes, I vividly remember watching my first animated movie in a theater. It was the Lion King. The experience was magical and deeply influenced my love for animation. It was a moment of pure wonder that ignited my passion for storytelling and visual art. I was a child while watching it, so I didn’t think right at that moment “I want to be an animator!” but it influenced me deeply and got me curious about filmmaking and the art of animation.

Maciej: “The Glassworker” is the first hand-drawn feature film from Pakistan. Why do you think it took so long for Pakistan to have this type of movie?

Usman: Creating a hand-drawn animated film requires significant resources, expertise, and industry support, which have historically been lacking in Pakistan. The industry is still developing, and there have been challenges in terms of funding, training, and technological access. This is why it took so long to produce a film of this kind in Pakistan. We had to train everyone (while also learning ourselves). It was an extremely difficult, amazing, and humbling experience.

Maciej: What pushed you to decide to make this movie and start your own studio, Mano Animation?

Usman: The decision came from a desire to tell unique stories that resonate both locally and globally. I saw an opportunity to create something that hadn’t been done before in Pakistan. My inspiration came from my love for traditional animation and the need to bring high-quality, hand-drawn films to Pakistan. Starting Mano Animation Studios was a way to fulfill this vision.

Maciej: What were the biggest challenges in gathering the crew? What helped you conquer the skepticism?

Usman: One of the biggest challenges was finding skilled artists and animators who shared my vision. Many professionals, including doctors and dentists, were willing to switch careers to work on the film, which was remarkable. Convincing their families that a career in animation was viable in Pakistan involved a lot of passion and persistence. Showcasing our dedication and progress helped overcome skepticism. It was tough, but it worked out in the end.

Maciej: Let’s talk about the plot. How did you come up with the story behind “The Glassworker”?

Usman: The story of “The Glassworker” is inspired by personal experiences and observations of the world around me. It’s about two children growing up in a glass shop and the challenges they face as war encroaches upon their peaceful town. This narrative reflects themes of beauty, craftsmanship, and the impact of conflict on ordinary lives, mirroring my personal journey and the environment I grew up in.

Maciej: Are there any elements of “The Glassworker” that are unique to Pakistani culture?

Usman: Yes, the film incorporates architectural styles, traditional clothing, and elements of Pakistani folklore, such as the concept of ‘jinns.’ These cultural nuances are woven into the narrative to provide an authentic representation of Pakistan while telling a universal and unique story.

Maciej: Are there any elements you think were missing in modern animation that you wanted to try in “The Glassworker”?

Usman: I wanted to emphasize the charm and artistry of hand-drawn animation, focusing on detailed backgrounds and expressive characters. Many modern animations rely heavily on digital techniques, and I felt there was a need for a more tactile, human touch that hand-drawn animation provides.

Maciej: What were your top animation influences?

Usman: Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata have been significant influences, especially their approach to storytelling and the anti-war themes present in their work. Other influences include the works of Makoto Shinkai and various artists who create rich, emotional narratives with strong visual aesthetics. I drew all the storyboards for ‘The Glassworker’ because I wanted to emulate my heroes. (Isao Takahata didn’t draw storyboards for his films, Osamu Tanabe did but he had a unique vision for his films that is incredible)

Maciej: What do you hope people will get out of this movie and its message?

Usman: I hope audiences appreciate the beauty of hand-drawn animation and the heartfelt story. The film’s message is about finding hope and beauty even in the darkest times. I want viewers to leave feeling inspired and reflective about the world around them.

Maciej: Do you think the movie will influence the Pakistani animation industry so we see more projects? Do you have hope it will influence things?

Usman: I believe “The Glassworker” can pave the way for more ambitious projects in Pakistan. It demonstrates that high-quality animation can be produced locally, and I hope it inspires others to explore this medium and elevate the industry.

Maciej: You must be very proud of your crew. What does the future hold for Mano Animation?

Usman: Absolutely, I am incredibly proud of ‘The Glassworker’ team. I got to work with a wonderful group of people in Pakistan and a wonderful group of people Internationally, we all worked our hardest to make this film a reality. All three of us, Mariam (co-founder of Mano and Art Director), myself and Khizer (CEO of Mano and Producer) are very grateful. We plan to continue pushing the boundaries of animation and storytelling. Future projects will focus on diverse narratives and innovative techniques to further establish Mano Animation as a (hopefully) significant player in the industry.

Maciej: How do you feel finally seeing the finished movie?

Usman: It’s a mix of pride, relief, and excitement. Seeing years of hard work come to life on screen is incredibly fulfilling. I’m grateful for the journey and excited for what comes next. But I am very happy the journey to make ‘The Glassworker’ is over!

Screener Squad: The Bear Season 3

The Bear Season 3 Review

THE BEAR SEASON 3 REVIEW

Dial up the Emmy voters and get the best ensemble SAG award ready. The Bear on FX and Hulu is back with season 3. We last left Chef Carmey (Emmy winner Jeremy Allen White) locked in the freezer. The beef wasn’t the only thing needing a thaw within that icey tomb. Carmey emerges with a fire in his gut but very cold shoulders. Blowing off Clair (Molly Gordon) the only intimate companion he’s had in this life, he hyper focuses on that Michelin Star he so wants for the restaurant. All your favorite staff is back on the line as well. Ritche (Emmy winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach) looking suave as ever as head of house while his own house is lopsided because of his ex remarrying. Being the ever present and dutiful father to his daughter, he wants the transition to be as civil and loving as possible, but is super-conflicted. Sydney (Emmy winner Ayo Edebiri) is ready to take on full partnership and all the stressful anxiety inducing responsibilities that come with the job. While Carmey is in full support of this transition verbally, his controlling grip is leaving Sydney off the ledger. Is The Bear the work family Sydney needs? Or are other opportunities on the horizon? Marcus (Lionel Boyce) has just lost his mother. Tina (Liza Colón-Zayas) can’t keep up with a new menu every night. Natalie (Abby Elliott) is dotting every i, crossing every t, and pinching every penny to keep Uncle Jimmy (Oliver Platt) happy with his investment while Carmey is throwing money into the fire like he’s the Joker giving a monologue about the important things in life. The main cast is quite a dish but save some room for a big round of cameos! Joel McHale and Jamie Lee Curtis return along with a few other surprising faces. Want a hint? They had a small role in Oppenheimer! Bradly, Neil and Rae discuss the avant garde approach of season 3 and big artistic swings of presentation. Is it new, innovative and fresh? Or are these desperate moves to hide the fact this three-course meal is four plates of reheated leftovers.

Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. You can call me Rae. You can also call me a film lover. I’ll watch it all — small screen; big screen, and everything in between. I have attended and worked for Fantastic Fest and South by Southwest for many years. I married a film geek as well. While we don’t agree on everything, we agree on our love of movies.

Highly Suspect Reviews: Longlegs

Longlegs Movie Review

LONGLEGS MOVIE REVIEW

The hype is here for director/writer Osgood Perkins new horror film Longlegs. It’s everywhere. Even not huge horror fans I know are talking about it in anticipation. Which is weird because I only know a handful of people who actually saw his terrific other films, The Blackcoat’s Daughter, Gretel and Hansel, and I am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House. Chalk it up to NEON who knows how to do marketing by promoting lead actress Maika Monroe talking about how working versus Nic Cage as the titular…whatever…absolutely terrified her. She plays FBI agent Lee Harker who has been assigned to the case of a mysterious series of murders where the father of a family kills everyone else and then himself, but a cryptic note is always found at the scenes signed ‘Longlegs’. That she seems to have some sort of psychic sense for dark stuff is a good reason to put her on these cases that shouldn’t have any connection to each other but seem to regardless. There also might be a connection to her own past. Longlegs is esoteric in a Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me sense, and procedural like Silence of the Lambs or Se7en. It’s easy to draw comparisons, to be sure, but Longlegs is completely its own thing regardless of the influences it wears on its sleeves. Chris, Wright, Nathan and Marco discuss all of this, the meanings behind some of its abstract esoterica, and whether Cage is terrifying or just plain campy.

While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). You can also check out Chris in his videocast, along with Martin Thomas and Danni Danger, that One Of Us does with our friends at Bell of Lost Souls: Crossover Event. He also regularly guests on the video game website Rage Select. Follow Chris on Twitter and Facebook and check out his Amazon Wish List.

Nathan Flynn (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. He also spearheads his own podcast on the Mission Impossible franchise titled “Mission: Impodible”. He can be found rarely posting on his personal twitter.

Marco Noyola (Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Audio Editor)

By day, Marco is a mild-mannered office worker, but by night he is a mild-mannered movie watcher. He does other mild-mannered stuff too.

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox.

TRASH IN THE CAN: THE SEDUCTION OF DR. FUGAZZI

This week we dive into the work of an amateur auteur in the tradition of Tommy Wiseau, Deuandra T. Brown, and the Former United States Secretary of the Treasury’s wife. Frank Calvillo returns strictly to discuss Faye Dunaway dressed as Annie Hall, but sticks around for an orgy with the staff of a Hot Topic and post-stroke Bette Davis. We watched 2009’s The Seduction of Dr. Fugazzi!

Eric is a multi-award show watching, sometimes comedian, sometimes writer that began life as a Muppet and 1930’s screwball comedy obsessed goon and continues to carry a torch for all things felt and funny. With a passion for genre films, poor taste, and whiskey, he and co-conspirator, Wright Sulek, indulge in the best/worst films the world has to offer with One of Us’s podcast, ‘Trash in the Can’. When not podding, Eric works as an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797.

THE GUEST

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Screener Squad: Interview With The Vampire Season 2

Anne Rice's Interview With The Vampire Season 2 Review

INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE SEASON 2

AMC Plus presents the Immortal Universe based on the books of Anne Rice and Interview with the Vampire is their core show (at this juncture). Heading into season 2, we last left our narrator Louis (Jacob Anderson) recounting the departure from his maker Lestat to interviewee Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian) and Louie’s new lover Armand (Assad Zaman) present. Louis, with florid prose, takes us on a narrative to the past with his forever pre-teen vampire ward Claudia (now recast with Delainey Hayles). The two vagabonds venture across war torn 40s Europe in search of other creatures of the night. They chance upon a troupe of vampires masquerading on stage as, well, vampires. Their leader Armand has a set of ironclad rules for Louis and Claudia to follow or else. Daniel pressures Louie to not just recount his time with Armand and his fang-bearing band of thespians, but to step out of his own feelings and into some semblance of warts and all truth. What became of Claudia? Why isn’t she with Louis now? What of the end of the war and this troupe of actors post Hitler’s death? What is it that Daniel can’t remember about his first interview back in the 70s with Louis? Humans tend towards romanticizing their history; does the mind of a vampire carry the same sentimental curse? Bradly, Matt, and Kim turn on their own recorders and recount their passionate love for season 1. Does the flame burn brighter in season 2, or die out like so many sophomore seasonal dramas.

YOUR REVIEWERS

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and Eye on the prize and maybe even provide some comments of his own.

Matt Foster (Screener Squad)

Matt Foster is a stand up comic, podcaster, and movie critic currently living in the greater Salt Lake City area. His lifelong love of genre film began early, when he realized they freaked out his mom. He performs (epidemics permitting) regularly on Dungeons and Comedy, a DND live play with standup comedians, and is the slightly less mustache-y half of the Nighthawks Podcast, a cinema-centric discussion cohosted by Trevor T. Trujillo.

Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.
