THE LEGEND OF VOX MACHINA SEASON 3 REVIEW

Last time on Vox Machina, our band of fearless warriors rolled the dice against the dragons that would rule the world and it was all kinds of super effective. However, all is not well in the world of Exandria. The most wicked and powerful of all dragons, Thordak (Lance Reddick) and his followers known as the Chroma Conclave, see the pestering heroes as nothing more than the sniveling cries of a dying race that doesn’t understand the concept of the inevitable. However, not all in the Chroma Conclave believe in the conquest of Thordak. Cree Summer, a rogue dragon, has offered to assist the heroes in stopping Thordak and saving the world. The Ashari elf, Keyleth (Marisha Ray) doesn’t trust the dragons but spitefully follows her friends into the fires of fate. Percy (Taliesin Jaffe) remains haunted by a once thought vanquished curse from his past but hopes to smother it with a love he desires in the future. The elf twins Vex (Laura Bailey) and Vax (Liam O’Brien) must mend the broken bonds of their family to retrieve an ancient vestige to fight the dragons. Scanlon (Sam Riegel) is on a quest to discover the true worth of raising his guitar pick to protect the things and people worth fighting for. Pike (Ashley Johnson) must master the Vestige armour at the cost of her loyalty to the Everlight, and Grog (Travis Willingham) is ready to rage! Dungeon Master Bradly with players Harmoni and Dogget venture into the Dungeons & Dragons universe and praise the game and the intriguing stories that a group of companions have created for all of us to enjoy.

Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Plus she can curse at us and not get fired….so bonus!

Danny Dogget (Screener Squad)

Hey persons, it’s your favorite canine Dogget! As many of you know, I don’t identify as a critic as much as a classy shock jock. That being said, I do my best to give all of you a well-balanced review filled with my true opinions and hopefully a few laughs. GET AWAY MOVIE REVIEW

Boring families go on vacations to well known attractions surrounded by fellow tourists and the safety of park security. An adventurous family, like Richard (Nick Frost), Susan (Aisling Bea), Sam (Sebastian Croft), and Jessie (Maisie Ayres), prefer something a little more off the beaten path. They take a vacation to a secluded remote Swedish island just prior to an anniversary celebration of islanders who long ago survived a pandemic by turning to cannibalism. Written by Nick Frost and directed by Steffen Haars, Get Away is a dark comedy you can catch in select theaters and soon streaming on Shudder. Shockingly, all is not what it seems among the townsfolk of the island. Aggressively angry that outsiders may ruin their festival, the inhabitants led by the matriarch of the celebration Klara (Anitta Suikkari) warn fellow islander Mads (Eero Milonoff), who’s housing the tourists in an Airbnb, that if they interfere then blood will spill. Mads however perhaps has some nefarious intentions of his own with the guests and Richard gets kinda unhinged when dealing with confrontation. Susan seems to have no problem overlooking the strange things going on while both kids just enjoy f**king with people. It’s anyone’s guess who will make it to the end once the chaos sets in. Mike, Bradly, and Drew discuss the stress of putting on a show when chaotic variables are about, discuss Nick Frost’s writing and career throughout the years, and of course deliberate whether or not this deserves a standing ovation or rotten tomatoes.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). MOANA 2 MOVIE REVIEW

It’s not usually a good sign when an animation company repurposes a planned tv series into a sequel film to one of their hits. I mean, I think. It’s happened before, right? Regardless, that’s the case with Moana 2. We were nervous because of that, Lin-Manuel Miranda not returning to do the score, and the general unlikelihood of a sequel living up to the original. While Moana 2 certainly doesn’t reach the heights that Moana did as a quality Disney animated film, Chris, Kate, Wright, and Wright’s sister Caroline were surprised to see that it still was pretty good. This time around, Moana’s ancestors call for her to journey far out to sea. There’s a god Nalo who has placed a curse on a sorta keystone island that allowed the people living on various islands in the ocean to visit each other. Moana must gather a crew from her islanders, find Maui and help him out of yet another predicament, and bring everybody together, all while sailing, singing, and battling audience expectations for a film to surpass the original. It doesn’t, but it still goes in the ‘win’ category.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Kate is a certified horror fiend and Horse Girl™. Her name isn’t short for anything. A native Austinite, she graduated with a BFA in Film Production from the University of Colorado Boulder then returned to the Lone Star State to make her home amid the cinephiles of the Alamo Drafthouse and the Austin Film Society. In her spare time, you can find her either down at the barn with her noble steed Jazz, watching as many movies as possible (often at work), cuddling with her pair of black cats and writing horror scripts, or nursing a beer in any available body of water… or doing Duolingo, where she’s currently on a 1000+ day streak.

THE PENGUIN SERIES REVIEW

Set just one week after the events of 2022’s The Batman, The Penguin follows Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) trying to collect what little is left in his nightclub, The Iceberg Lounge. He’s caught by Carmine Falcone’s son Alberto Falcone (Michael Zegen), but through a fit of rage Oz kills Alberto. Now with the new mob boss’ blood on his hands, Oz has to hide the body quick. He encounters a desperate kid, Vic (Rhenzy Feliz), who’s trying to steal the Penguin’s tires, but Oz takes sympathy on Vic and has him help hide the body. As Oz returns to the Falcone mansion to discuss business and Alberto’s whereabouts, we’re introduced to Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti), Alberto’s sister. Sofia and Oz have a tumultuous history to say the least. As these two characters strive for power in Gotham’s underworld, what unfurls is an epic crime story with rich and complex characters. The performances by Farrell and Milioti are absolutely stunning as they disappear into their characters. Even Feliz’s Vic gets to shine versus all these heavyweights in this series. Lauren LeFranc’s storytelling and writing in this spin-off series is something to behold as well as she takes this character from The Batman and gives him so much depth while getting to explore trauma in insightful ways. Wright, Jordan, and Ryan gush over how much they loved this series and how it may be one of the best TV series of 2024.

A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. Ryan Aleck Hill (Screener Squad, Video and Audio editor)

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. GLADIATOR II MOVIE REVIEW

After 24 years, Ridley Scott decided to dust off the old Gladiator garb and make a sequel to his 2000 epic that won the gold at the Oscars. Does Gladiator II have the same chances at becoming the best film of the year? Highly unlikely. Paul Mescal takes on the titular character this time around as a warrior sold into slavery and then rising in the ranks as a formidable gladiator at the Coliseum. Sound familiar? Well this film also stars Denzel Washington as Mescal’s owner and Pedro Pascal stars as a general that led to Mescal’s slavery. So that’s different at least. Washington’s character Macrinus is a slight breath of fresh air as a scheming would-be politician trying to get in the good graces of Rome’s twin emperors played Joseph Quinn & Fred Hechinger. Even Pascal’s Acacius is a sympathetic general trying to enact real change for the Roman people. One of the two returning characters, Connie Nielsen’s Lucilla, has a fairly large role in the film, and who gives Mescal hope that he can overcome the odds. Listen as Wright, Jason, Ben, and Marco discuss this, some would say, useless sequel and if holds up in Scott’s filmography.

Born in New Orleans, brought up in Austin, and raised by cinema, Jason is an animator and filmmaker with decades of experience working in the arts. Before even graduating high school, Jason was animating and podcasting with the Austin-based movie review site Spill.com. From this formative experience, he gained an eclectic taste and knowledge that he carried into a rich career working in the animation industry. Notable projects include Marvel’s Hit Monkey, FXX’s Legion, Netflix’s America: The Motion Picture, and working for companies including Nickelodeon, Rooster Teeth, PBS Kids, and many more. As a cineast, it’s his belief that his favorite movie is one that he hasn’t seen yet. His thirst for great art is unquenchable, whether that means consuming it or contributing to it himself.

Ben Glasthal (Highly Suspect Review, Screener Squad, Breakfast Pub, Unstabletop Gamers, Video and Audio Editor)

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. WICKED MOVIE REVIEW

Seems like a holiday season can’t go by anymore without a big event musical film. Not that Chris, Frank, Wright, and Kim are complaining (note: these four end up together on a lot of the musical releases). This year though, one of the biggest musicals of the past few decades that has practically a cult built up around it, makes the jump. Will it be a smash or just get smooshed? We’re talking today about Wicked Part One, which is actually longer than the entirety of the original musical. That certainly gives one pause when considering its chances of being good. But this story of the young Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz and her unusual friendship with Glinda (or GAlinda) the Good Witch delivered the good stuff well past what any of us were expecting. So yeah, we get hyperbolic about our affection for this. Be prepared for One Of Us’s musical fandom crew to be fully about to start literally singing its praises themselves mode.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Wright Sulek (Screener Squad, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Trash in the Can, Audio Editor)

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox.

GHOST CAT ANZU MOVIE REVIEW

Four adolescents are on a quest to see a dead body gathered around a campfire for the night to discuss one of life’s great mysteries: Mickey is a mouse, Donald is a duck, Pluto is a dog, so what’s Goofy? The world may never know, but dear reader/listener, if you choose to stand by Bradly along with Jordan and Lewayne, you can ponder life, death, childhood abandonment, and what the hell is Ghost Cat Anzu. Eleven year old Karin accompanies her father to Sousei-Ji temple where her grandfather lives. Karin is left with her grandfather while her father attempts to hide from some gangsters and make money to pay off some serious debts. Karin discovers a giant cat that walks around on two legs, and who has a bit of a gambling problem of his own, and rides around on a scooter. Ghost Cat Anzu, based on the beloved manga of the same name by writer Takashi Imashiro and directed by Yōko Kuno, is an enchanting animated movie from Japan showcasing real locations brought to life through stunning animation. Karin and Anzu build a friendship through day-to-day activities ranging from simple errands to a grocery store and encounters with spirits and gods. With Karin’s father’s absence passing from days to weeks, the little girl’s hope in ever seeing him again starts to wane. With the anniversary of her mother’s death quickly approaching, Ghost Cat Anzu will scheme up the purrfect plan to ensure the forgotten child remembers the unconditional love of a parent.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

RED ONE MOVIE REVIEW

The influx of Xmas movies has begun. With a big cast and with director Jake Kasdan (The Jumanji movies) at the helm, Red One inserts a Marvel movie feel to the proceedings. Dwayne Johnson is Callum Drift, a top agent at E.L.F. who protects Santa Claus (J.K. Simmons) and other mythological entities so they can get business done. When an unknown group manages to infiltrate the very Wakanda-ish North Pole and abducts Santa, and with days to go before Xmas, Callum is on top alert. The only lead they have is a top-hacker, Jack (Chris Evans), who is the kind of bad guy who literally takes candy from babies. But when he is forcibly taken by E.L.F. troops (with no small amount of difficulty) his whole world-view is thrown when he discovers Santa is in fact real, amongst other magical entities. He is forced to work with Callum to track down the kidnappers and get Santa back. While this sort of affair could easily go totally awesome or eye-rollingly awful, Red One hangs somewhere around ‘not terrible, but not terribly good either’. Chris, Wright, Marco, and Ben admit that kids will probably dig the heck out of this. The rest of us, well, I guess it could have been much worse.
