HALF MAN SERIES REVIEW

A lot can go wrong on your wedding day. The wrong flowers are delivered and placed in the wrong areas. The in-laws are outlaws and fighting with your parents. Cold feet and no warm socks for your wingtips. Also, your brother from another mother confronts you about the lives you’ve both lived. The confrontation turns to blows and the record scratch of how you got here never happens because you know why this happened. It was inevitable. Writher, actor, and creator Richard Gadd is back, this time on HBO MAX with a six episode miniseries called Half Man. A violent altercation at Niall’s (Jamie Bell) wedding leads to non-linear story telling memories that brought Niall to this confrontation point with Ruben (Richard Gadd). As young kids, the bullied Niall befriends the angry Ruben for protection but Ruben would later ask for favors in return that Niall refuses to provide. This relationship spirals through good and bad times in an exploration of truth being freeing yet horrifying and cowardice being ugly but safe. Bradly, Eoin, and Dom discuss the different but tremendous Richard Gadd as both an actor and the storyteller. They talk about how non-linear storytelling is a perfect menu to explore memories and moments as a means of character study. Then they with a discussion about the violence that men do to each other, and themselves.

LEVITICUS MOVIE REVIEW

Horror is big in 2026 and I’m not just talking about having a visceral reaction to the current state of America. The studios with horror projects on their shelves are getting dollar signs in their eyes after the wild and unpredicted success of Obsession, Hokum, and Backrooms and everybody wants in. No stranger to the art-horror world is NEON, who not only got a hit with Hokum earlier this year, but now are presenting a new spooky film from the queer community. Leviticus follows Naim (Joe Bird) and Ryan (Stacy Clausen), two high school kids in a small homophobic religion town who have been having secret trysts. When Naim catches Ryan also getting it on with another boy, he vengefully reports them to the religious leaders of the town who summon outside help from a ‘deliverance healer’ (Nicholas Hope) to cast evil out of the boys. What he really does is somehow attach a dark doppelganger supernatural force to mete a violent judgement against those who disobey what he thinks are ‘God’s laws’ (note: I am very sure that several of these townspeople were wearing clothing made of two different fabrics so, hypocrites much?). The simplest description of Leviticus would be a queer It Follows but that would do a disservice to the fine performances, even if Chris, Wright, Sarah, and Drew didn’t dig on it as much as many seemed to at this year’s SXSW screenings.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Deliberations of Doom)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar and theater management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).

Wright Sulek (The Other Boss, Trash in the Can, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, One Man’s Trash, Screener Squad)

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox. As of 2024, Wright has now been inducted into the Austin Film Critics Association as well as co-owns the One of Us network with Chris Cox.

Sarah Jane (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Sarah Jane was born and raised in Southern California but currently calls Austin, TX her home. She’s seen over 5,700 movies so far with zero plans on stopping. She has a penchant for all things exploitation, and she loves Godzilla with all her heart. Her favorite films are Deep Red, Le Samourai, and Miller’s Crossing. THE TESTAMENTS SERIES REVIEW

Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel The Testaments is a sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale that was over 3 decades in the making. It’s now been brought to life through a ten episode series on Hulu/Disney Plus starring a cast of on the rise. Praise be! The young plum Agnes (Chase Infiniti) has become a woman! Blessed be the fruit! As a newly blessed woman it is now her duty to take a husband and procreate. In the land of Gilead it is every young woman’s duty to become fertile young wives for the men of the nation. Under his eye, they must stay happy, healthy, and worthy as wives and future mothers. Certainly no reading, writing, or independent thoughts to lead them towards a life of debauchery and sin is allowed. Daisy (Lucy Halliday) a young woman from the outside world of a far away land called Toronto can learn to be a faithful servant of Gilead as well. What the leaders and Aunts of the cult don’t know is that Daisy is a secret spy. She’s a part of a freedom fighting network called Mayday whose purpose is to take down the oppressive tyrannical society of Gilead. Bradly, Eoin, and Chris Ayres discuss their history with The Handmaid’s Tale series, how it serves this legacy sequel, and how the series can stand on its own without it. In addition they praise the thespians throughout the series that include Ann Dowd, Elisabeth Moss, Mabel Li, and Rowan Blanchard.

FINNEGAN’S FOURSOME MOVIE REVIEW

From multi-hyphenate filmmaker Edward Burns comes Finnegan’s Foursome, a dramedy about a golf loving clan of Irish-Americans. Brothers Teddy (Brian d’Arcy James) and Freddy (Burns) and their respective grown children, Marie (Erica Hernández) and Frankie (Brian Muller) have traveled to the ancestral home of their recently deceased patriarch, James (Ian McElhinney) a professional golfer from whom they’ve inherited their love of the game, Ireland, and a competitive streak that borders on the unhealthy. James’ dying wish was for his ashes to be spread at four specific sites, and for his offspring to continue the tradition of the Finnegan’s Foursome, an annual golf tournament between Finnegan family members. In between rounds of golf, the Finnegans will mourn, tempers will flare, and grievances will be aired; all set against the backdrop of some of the most beautiful golf courses Ireland has to offer. Our reviewers Frank, Eoin, and Marco provide commentary from the sidelines, but they have no intention of whispering their thoughts about the film. SACCHARINE MOVIE REVIEW

Push it to the limit! Each journey begins with a first step! Each step, each rep, each bead of sweat gets you closer to your goal. It’s not about losing weight, it’s about gaining a life. Several unquotable motivational speaking sayings can be pulled out of thin air. What takes real effort is writing a compelling script with a sympathetic protagonist and a spooky scary haunt. Saccharine is about a medical student named Hana (Midori Francis) who gives herself no grace in the midst of that hussle culture 24-7. She’s taking care of business, making the grades, and cutting up cadavers at college. She’s also counting calories, taking steps, and going plus ultra in an influencers special weight loss course. One fateful day she meets an old highschool buddy who’s lost a ton of weight since senior year who lets Hana borrow some pills. Hana reverse engineers the pills and discovers that the magic ingredient is human ashes. Fortunately for her, she can get that specialized ingredient at the morgue in her school. She becomes addicted to the cannibalistic weight loss program, only she discovers that the ghost of an eaten person, ashes or not, isn’t really happy about the situation. Bradly, Mike the Editor, and Caroline chew the fat and pull no punches when dissecting the bloated corpse of this delightfully disturbing Australian body horror haunt.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is an award-winning creative jack of all trades, and is pretty competent with most of them. He is a writer, director, animator, video editor, and motion graphics artist. He has tried his hand at nearly every form of artistic expression at least once. He was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania where he fell in love with film, writing and special effects at an early age. His obsession with film would lead him to being locally known as a “human IMDb” and being on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He would study film in Pittsburgh before taking his talents to Austin. Not letting something like Tourettes get in his way, he has produced a handful of animated short films that have won awards from film festivals all over the globe. He has also written several yet-to-be-produced screenplays and TV pilots, with some of them being recognized in screenwriting competitions. He has even created motion graphics and animations for several clients, from movie theaters to Twitch streamers. When not creating or watching films, he enjoys MST3K, classic video games and buying vinyl records. He loves dogs, dropping obscure pop culture trivia and watching travel videos. Caroline Sulek (Screener Squad, Trash in the Can)

Caroline Sulek resides in Mckinney, TX with her son Henry and two cats: Sally and Rocky. As a mom, corporate baddie, and unabashed lover of all things silly, spooky, and creative, she brings a unique perspective to the One of Us network. Her love of art and movies started long ago when she and her brother, Wright, would spend entire summer vacations in front of the TV and she would draw portraits of Wright as he sat watching for hours. Caroline has been a frequent guest and fan favorite of the Trash in the Can podcast with her brother, Wright, and his life podcast partner, Eric Samaniego. HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY: EP.12 – THE HANDMAID’S TALE/THE TEMP/RUNNING MATES

This week on Hollywood Royalty, it’s time for our penultimate episode featuring the Faye you love to hate with three films that show the actress’ knack for exploring characters that, while not outright villains, defy conventional likability. First up, we look at Faye’s chilly take on Serena Joy in the 1990 adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s classic dystopian novel, The Handmaid’s Tale. After that, we see Faye play the ruthless head of a cookie company who is determined to stay on top in the 1993 thriller The Temp. Finally, Faye takes on the role of a longtime Senator’s wife who knows where all the bodies are buried in the 2000 political comedy Running Mates. Critic at Next Best Picture and Awards Watch, and co-host of the Halloweeners podcast, Cody Derricks, joins me to look at Faye’s portrayals of three women who couldn’t care less about being liked.

A BETTER YESTERDAY – EP. 4: CHAN COMING OUT OF THE LEE’S SHADOW

In this episode of A Better Yesterday–a conversation series about the origins and evolution of Hong Kong action cinema culture — Ross O’Brien and Bey Logan pick up the story in in the immediate aftermath of Bruce Lee’s death, and trace how Hong Kong cinema processed the shock, grief, and commercial vacuum that followed.

Bey walks Ross through the “stages of grief” the industry went through: failed attempts to manufacture a new Bruce Lee, the rapid decline of former rival Jimmy Wang Yu, and the surprising rise of Cantonese-language comedy as the real box office heir to the dragon. They dive into the world of the Hui Brothers* and how their grounded, street-level humor sensibility later feeds into Stephen Chow’s mo lei tau nonsense comedy. In parallel, Shaw Brothers double down on ‘serious’ kung fu and wuxia cycles.

Bey then charts the long, winding road of Jackie Chan’s early career, from the anonymous stuntman and Taiwanese box-office poison under the wing of legendary director/gambler/underworld titan Lo Wei, to the breakthough of kung fu comedy with Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow and Drunken Master–two 1978 classics which used southern Chinese folk heroes, Shaolin myth and Cantonese slapstick, sealed with Jackie’s underdog “boy next door” persona that would define his career.

Join Ross and Bey as they map how Hong Kong cinema, reeling from tragedy, reinvented itself through farce — and how Jackie Chan, Yuen Woo-ping, and a wave of kung fu comedies turned 1978 into the most crucial year ever in Hong Kong cinema history.

Bey Logan is a Hong Kong-based screenwriter, producer and martial arts film historian. His films include Jackie Chan’s ‘The Medallion’ and ‘The Twins Effect’, Sammo Hung’s ‘Dragon Squad’ and ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny’, which starred Donnie Yen and Michelle Yeoh. He has produced documentaries about Bruce Lee, as well as a book entitled ‘Bruce Lee and I’. Bey’s recent publications include the two-volume ‘36 Chambers of Kung Fu Cinema’.

Ross O’Brien (A Better Yesterday)

Ross O’Brien writes about technology and economics in Asia from a fishing village on Hong Kong’s Lantau Island. Most evenings he stares out at the South China Sea, fretting about what the salt air is doing to his comic books and Del Rey paperbacks. He has no film credits to speak of, unless you count the voice-overs he did for Vidal Sassoon shampoo commercials when he was hard up in Singapore in the 1990s.

EUPHORIA SEASON 3 REVIEW

Oh the places you’ll go! is a lovely book by Dr. Seuss about how the future is a hopeful vast landscape of opportunities. When it comes to season three of Euphoria, those places are limited to a dead marriage, prison, or even the grave. A few years after high school, Rue’s (Zendaya) debts catch up with her and she’s being pulled in between two drug lords and the DEA. Nate (Jacob Elordi) and Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) are betrothed and want the most lavish expensive wedding they can imagine. To pay for this, Nate borrows money from gangsters, and Cassie humiliates herself on the internet at the behest of sexual deviants. Neither communicate this to the other. Jules (Hunter Schafer) is a sex worker whose number one client keeps her living a luxurious life that she can never leave.
