GOODBYE DON GLEES MOVIE REVIEW

Teen misfits Roma, Toto, and Drop call themselves the “Don Glees,” basically a term used for their adventures outside of the real world. They’re not popular, and are constantly bullied. Every year, there’s a fireworks display that they don’t get invited to, so they set off their own. This year, Drop convinces Roma to buy a drone to record the action. Roma doesn’t know shit about flying a drone, nor did he think of looking up a tutorial on DJI’s website, so of course he loses it. The next day, they find out there was a forest fire, and all the school bullies are blaming the Don Glees. So the 3 decide to head out to the forest to recover the lost drone, to find the SD card, hopefully to recover footage that will exonerate the teens. Goodbye Don Glees! is at heart, definitely a coming of age film… how good it does in achieving that moniker is highly debated. Today Dogget, Ben, and Bradly allow Chad to process his feelings and letting him know that it’s okay to cry… even though the sadness was telegraphed in the first 2 mins of the movie.

From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Danny Dogget (Screener Squad)

Hey persons, it’s your favorite canine Dogget! As many of you know, I don’t identify as a critic as much as a classy shock jock. That being said, I do my best to give all of you a well-balanced review filled with my true opinions and hopefully a few laughs. Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. For the rest of his free time, he can be found biking, drinking craft beer, being an amateur photographer, and playing video games by himself or on Twitch. WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS SEASON 4 REVIEW

Season 3 of What We Do In The Shadows ended with each of our favorite vampire roommates leaving home to embark on their own voyages of self discovery. Except for Colin Robinson. Who died. Again. Sort of? Season 4 wastes no time getting Staten Island’s wackiest undead residents back together under the same dilapidated roof for another round of bloody (and bloody ridiculous) hijinks: Nandor searches for the perfect bride with the help of a devious djinn, Guillermo strives for greater autonomy, and Nadja opens a nightclub for vampires, while Lazlo becomes a doting father to an orphaned child. Specifically, the child that crawled out of the abdominal cavity of Collin Robinson’s corpse at the end of Season 3. Hey, nobody said parenting would be easy, especially when your child is an energy vampire with the body of a surly toddler, the head of a fully grown man, and a penchant for belting out Broadway show tunes. Our fearless vampire hunters Spider-Mike, Tessa, Harmoni, and Marco held an emergency house meeting to discuss whether the series has raised the stakes for the characters, or should just die already.

But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. Tessa Morrison (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Unstabletop Gamers)

Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. Wrote and contributed to website and magazine Strange Kids Club for five years reviewing films, video games, and Halloween candy. Co-hosted a Public Access show called Ladies of Fandom. Previously guested on podcasts Blood Over Texas, Threequel Club, Trash in the Can, Retro Movie Roundtable, and Nerds with Mics.

Harmoni Anderson (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Unstabletop Gaming)

Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. HOUSE OF DARKNESS MOVIE REVIEW

When a review starts with a long, deep sigh from one of the Squad, you know you’re in for some harsh commentary. And that’s how Rose, Kimberly, Lewayne, and T.C. kick off their review for this new gothic horror mystery. After Hap (Justin Long) meets Mina (Kate Bosworth) at a bar, he offers to drive her home, which ends up being an impressive estate far from the city. Hap is just a regular dude looking to score, and he’s pretty sure he’s gonna make that happen with this his beautiful, mysterious date. She invites him in. She offers him a drink. She lights a fire. The mood is clearly being set, but she’s not making it easy on this average Joe. While getting acquainted, their flirtation goes from playful to sexy to downright strange. Doors creak and lights flicker, the electricity goes out, but that doesn’t stop Hap from his advances, even when unexpected occurrences offset his attempts at a physical connection. The guy just wants to get lucky, but this coy mistress is more interested in the game. But, does this movie hold any of the Squad’s interests? Well, as said, this review starts with a heavy sigh. So, at least one or more of the gang wasn’t having what this movie was offering.

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. THE GOOD BOSS MOVIE REVIEW

It has to be hard to be the boss… the head honcho… the big cheese. Whatever pet name you have for your superior at work, just know that they have a tough life. Making sure your employees are satisfied with their work/life balance, meeting deadlines with the warehouse, and even having to talk to an employee’s wife about her extramarital affair… it’s hard work. That’s why they make 30 times more than you do… You sucker. In The Good Boss, Javier Bardem is Blanco, the owner of Blacos Basculas, and just like the scales he sells, has to keep everything in balance or the whole operation ceases to be. Especially when a business committee is coming for an inspection of the plant, an award is on the line that Blanco has to have. What lengths is he willing to go to? A lot apparently, when you have a laid off worker protesting in front of your scale factory. Or another employee is constantly late. Or when you start courting the new intern… Blancos tries to keep his plate clean until he realizes it’s full of shit. Mindy, Brad, T.C., and Chad are here to argue the definition of “Dark Comedy.” Thanks for being here.

SALOUM MOVIE REVIEW

Coming straight outta West Africa, Saloum starts with a coup d’etat, a drug lord, and 3 mercenaries tasked with with transporting said drug lord back to safety. By the 2nd act, shit flips on its head. Written and directed by Jean Luc Herbulot, Saloum is a horror/thriller that never relents. What should be an easy extraction for easy money, turns out to be a fight for survival, against an ancient entity and a pact that keeps the peace. Everything is constantly moving and evolving, with our 3 mercs in the middle of it. Matt, Lewayne, and Chad join us for today’s review. With references to many action movies, Saloum is an easy watch for such a good movie.

SURFACE SERIES REVIEW

Netflix may have it’s Knives Out but Apple TV steps up to the murder mystery streaming competition with an eight episode psychological thriller Surface from acclaimed writer/producer Veronica West (High Fidelity, Dexter: New Blood). Since Sophie’s (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) accident where she fell overboard on a ferry, every face is a blurry memory. Her husband James (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) just wants her to focus on feeling better and moving on. Her best friend Caroline (Ari Graynor) wants to be the rock she can lean on but isn’t sure they were all that close to begin with. Unsatisfied with the hand she’s been dealt, Sophie refuses to leave all her cards on the table. With her therapist Hannah (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) she’ll scratch the surface of her trauma to discover if she survived an accident, a suicide attempt, or an attempted murder! Bradly, Rae, and Neil polish up the magnifying glass and put on their Sherlock hats. Together they discuss the nuance of the mystery in the wake of Agatha Christie, sexy-time saucy scenes in a year of desert-dry hand holding, and ponder if the best kind of mystery asks us to solve the conflicts with in ourselves.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Neil Anderson (Screener Squad)

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

CLERKS III MOVIE REVIEW

Back in 1994, a young Kevin Smith made a black and white indie movie set in a convenience store. Inspired by his life, work experiences, friends, and customers, it became a huge hit — one of the most important independent films ever made — and, ostensibly one of the most frequently stolen rental video tapes ever, back when we had video stores and rental videotapes. Nearly 30 years later, after a progressive decline in the quality and mass appeal of Smith’s works, in the age of streaming video and legal weed, Smith has returned to that same convenience store in the most Kevin Smith way possible: making a (partially) black and white indie movie set in a convenience store, inspired by his life, work experiences, friends, and customers. TC, Marcos, Ryan, and Lewayne head out to the Quick Stop in New Jersey to hang out with Dante, Randal, Elias, Jay & Silent Bob, and a hell of a lot of, “Hey, it’s –” characters and cameos, as Kevin Smith takes us on one last trip down memory lane ) or until he taps his well of creativity again and has to come back here for Clerks 4 or Jay & Silent Bob Go Hawaiian). So, kick back, drink some beers, shmoke some weed, check out what the guys have to say, and see if you think this is going to be a fitting cap on Smith’s career or if it’s going to be just another one of his dick, weed, and meta reference laden films made for his very specific audience.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. He has released two feature films, The Princess Knight and A Christmas Sunset. He thrives on collaboration and the thrill of sharing stories in all forms.

Me? I come from the South, Out there, beyond the horizon by the big river. Out there where the bandits formed cities, and the gambling is legal. I got into movies like most nerds by watching Tarantino but fell in love with movies through Chinese Cinema for some reason. A few of my favorite things would probably be live music, new experiences, and belt-fed ammunition. Ryan Aleck Hill (Screener Squad, Video and Audio editor)

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

BURIAL MOVIE REVIEW

As the Russians advanced on Berlin, Adolf Hitler, hiding in his bunker, shot himself rather than face falling into Russian hands. History indicates he was cremated, and his ashes seized by the Russians, who moved them around, rather than leave them in a permanent space to allow for the creation of a memorial…Or, something like that. But, what if the Russians got there in the immediate aftermath of the suicide, and seized Hitler’s corpse? And tried to transport it back to Russia. And buried his coffin every night to keep werewolves from getting it. Except not *those kind* of werewolves… But, the Russians had Thor with them. But, not *that* Thor. And there was a dark wizard. But not really, it was just a guy who played one in some movies. Confused? Unsure if this is a supernatural horror movie? Or, a military horror movie? Or, a contemplation of the power of symbols and their use in war and peace? Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.
