The Offering Movie Review

INFESTATION FANTASTIC FEST 2022: THE OFFERING

Nick Blood plays Art, a young husband who is trying to make it work in commercial real estate but it’s not panning out. He returns reluctantly with his wife (Emily Wiseman) to his father’s home where Dad (Allan Corduner) works out of the basement as a mortician. Art’s intent is to ask his father to put up his house/business as collateral so he doesn’t lose his own shirt, but what he ends up with instead is the target of a powerful shape changing demon. What you get is a Blumhouse style ghost/demon horror movie but nestled deeply within Hasidic culture. Listen to Wright and Chris give their Fantastic Fest take on it.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). You can also check out Chris in his videocast, along with Martin Thomas and Danni Danger, that One Of Us does with our friends at Bell of Lost Souls: Crossover Event. He also regularly guests on the video game website Rage Select. Follow Chris on Twitter and Facebook and check out his Amazon Wish List.

His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox.

INFESTATION: FANTASTIC FEST 2022: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECTS

Wright and Chris take on their first film of this year’s Fantastic Fest, a road trip movie with a very uptight and mean-spirited gay dwarf and a free-spirited wacky sex worker. She convinces him to give him a ride to Canada so she can make it to the place and time she’s been ‘told’ that the aliens are coming to pick her up. Shenanigans ensue, as does eventually a weird bond between the two. Check out our Infestation bite-sized review of Unidentified Objects.

Highly Suspect Reviews: See How They Run

See How They Run Movie Review

SEE HOW THEY RUN MOVIE REVIEW

Between Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot adaptations and Rian Johnson’s Benoit Blanc movies, famed author Agatha Christie and Christie-inspired mysteries are enjoying something of a resurgence. You know the type of story I’m talking about: a prominent person is murdered, a star studded ensemble of suspects gather in a remote but luxurious location, while a brilliant detective methodically breaks down each of their alibis to determine whodunnit. It’s a shopworn template, but See How They Run tries to breath life into the genre with parodic humor and metatextual hijinks while mixing fact and fiction – many of the incidents and characters depicted are based on historical events and real people. As narrator Leo Köpernick (Adrien Brody) informs us, it’s 1953 and Agatha Christie’s West End stage play The Mousetrap has just concluded its 100th performance. Köpernick is an obnoxious Hollywood director hired to adapt the hit play into a movie. Needless to say, he has several notes about how to “improve” the story for the big screen. He’s also very much dead; having been murdered during the afterparty, and his corpse dumped on the stage for everyone to see. Enter the world weary Inspector Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) and his overly eager new assistant Constable Stalker (Saoirse Ronan). Together, they must figure out who killed the reviled filmmaker, and there are a lot of suspects who had motive to kill the loathsome Köpernick. Was it the pompous playwright, the glad-handing leading man, the adulterous producer, the flinty rightsholder, or any of the other members of the ensemble? Ben, Marco, and Frank accepted an invitation from Inspector Cox to meet in his sumptuous parlor where he interrogated them about their reactions to the film. All the suspects saw the film and know whodunnit but who liked it and who didn’t? Listen to find out!

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Ben Glasthal (Highly Suspect Review, Screener Squad, Breakfast Pub, Unstabletop Gamers, Video and Audio Editor)

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. For the rest of his free time, he can be found biking, drinking craft beer, being an amateur photographer, and playing video games by himself or on Twitch. He’s best found on Instagram or Twitter as @MovieReelBen.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and Eye on the prize and maybe even provide some comments of his own.

Marcos Lira (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Me? I come from the South, Out there, beyond the horizon by the big river. Out there where the bandits formed cities, and the gambling is legal. I got into movies like most nerds by watching Tarantino but fell in love with movies through Chinese Cinema for some reason. A few of my favorite things would probably be live music, new experiences, and belt-fed ammunition. You can catch this occasional podcaster, occasional other Marco and full-time human on any form of social media by typing jlmarcos62. Hit me up for music suggestions and bad jokes.

Danny Dogget (Screener Squad)

Hey persons, it’s your favorite canine Dogget! As many of you know, I don’t identify as a critic as much as a classy shock jock. That being said, I do my best to give all of you a well-balanced review filled with my true opinions and hopefully a few laughs. You can occasionally find me on other persons podcast like Mission Impodible (that’ll be 10 dollars Nathan). For the most part, you can find me doing reviews on Oneofus.net.

Ryan Aleck Hill (Screener Squad, Video and Audio editor)

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken. You can follow him on Twitter but you’ll probably regret it.

Pearl Movie Review

PEARL MOVIE REVIEW

After Ti West’s 70s slasher X came out in March of this year, everyone was really surprised to hear he and his star were returning a few months later for the prequel to the film, set decades earlier, and starring Mia Goth as a young version of her elderly matriarch from X. Honestly, we weren’t sure what to make of the decision, BUT it’s A24’s dime and they seem to know what they’re doing more often than not, so what the hell. In this film, Goth who plays Pearl, is a young woman living in the same farm house from X but with her disciplinarian mother and invalid father. They’re originally from Germany and Mom discourages interactions with town because WWI is going on and Germans aren’t exactly popular in America. But Pearl dreams of the return of her husband from the war, and of being discovered and becoming a big Hollywood star. Problem is, she doesn’t tend to take rejection well. Or things that potentially stand in the way of her getting what she wants. Or annoying farm animals.

Highly Suspect Reviews: Barbarian

Barbarian Movie Review

BARBARIAN MOVIE REVIEW

STOP! Our critics want you to know that you should stop reading anything at all about this film, and just go see it. Assuming you like really good horror movies. You can come back and listen to this really fun review with Chris, Wright, and Alan afterwards. Because although we start off completely and perhaps even over-cautiously non-spoiler, eventually we give a warning and dive into a full-spoiler review of this new film. The non-spoiler version of the plot is Georgina Campbell plays Tess, a woman who shows up to her Airbnb in Detroit on a dark and rainy night only to find out there’s already someone staying there. The door is answered by a sleepy Keith, played by the actor who automatically makes red flags go off in horror movies, Bill Skarsgård. It seems like a mistake was made by the company that rents it but no one is answering the phone so the two renters after much caution and unsurety by Tess decide to share the house for the night. And that’s as much as I can tell you without spoiling the delightful surprises this movie has in store for you. At least here. If you’ve already seen Barbarian, and you should, listen along with our review and see how much you agree or disagree with our take on it.

Screener Squad: The Woman King

The Woman King Movie Review

THE WOMAN KING MOVIE REVIEW

For a film that deals with Africa’s tragic legacy of colonization and slavery, The Woman King is a surprisingly fleet, action packed, crowd pleaser. It is the year 1820, and Nansica (Viola Davis) is the general of the Agojie, an elite force of warrior women who faithfully serve Ghezo, the King of Dahomey (John Boyega). In order to protect his people from rival tribes and slavery, the King has entered into an uneasy alliance with the Portuguese. This doesn’t sit well with Nansica who knows that once the Europeans have enslaved Dahomey’s neighbors, they will come for the Dahomey as well. Nansica must now defend her people from the raiding Oyo tribe, while trying to convince her King to reject the slave trade altogether. Into this difficult situation comes Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), a headstrong recruit who has been given to the Agojie for training and conditioning. Eventually, Nawi comes to the attention of General Nansica, who sees much of her former self in the rebellious young recruit. Our reviewers Harmoni, Michael, Kim, and Marco were all entertained by this action adventure film from director Gina Prince-Bythewood, even as it reminded us of the horrors and injustices of history.

Marco Noyola (Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Audio Editor)

By day, Marco is a mild-mannered office worker, but by night he is a mild-mannered movie watcher. He does other mild-mannered stuff too.

“You don’t need to follow me. You don’t need to follow anybody!”

Harmoni Anderson (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Unstabletop Gaming)

Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Plus she can curse at us and not get fired….so bonus!

” width=Michael Van Slyke (Screener Squad)

Michael is a second-generation Air Force brat born in Tucson, raised in San Antonio, and living in Austin since the mid ’80s. Since being introduced to Star Trek as a child by his mother Michael has had an obsessive love of all things sci-fi. He is a cartoonist, illustrator, costumer, leatherworker, amateur luthier, singer, aspiring voice actor, and a motion graphics artist. With all these interests and skills, he thinks the term “Renaissance Man” sounds better than “artsy guy with ADHD”. He lives with his lovely and nerdy wife Harmoni Anderson and their two cats. When not watching and discussing sci-fi and fantasy movies and TV he looks for new hobbies and skills to try. He also listens to Harmoni try and teach him things about K-pop band BTS. Like… all the things about BTS.

Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

Screener Squad: Confess, Fletch

Confess, Fletch Movie Review

CONFESS, FLETCH MOVIE REVIEW

For those of you who don’t know Fletch, let me give you a brief: Fletch is an investigative journalist (former in this movie) that has quick wit and big mouth. A lot of times that mouth gets him the information he seeks. Other times it gets him in more trouble. There were two Fletch movies in the 80’s, the titular character being played by Chevy Chase. Although the OG films can stand on their own behind Chase’s performance, this new reboot is so much better. Jon Hamm not only puts on the Fletch gloves, he stretches them out, forming to his version of the character. In Confess, Fletch, we find our hero in the middle of a murder investigation, with himself as the lead suspect. Meanwhile, he has to recover a bunch of stolen paintings for his client. So he takes it upon himself to solve the murder, and figure out who stole the paintings. Seems like those two situations are closely linked… Today Jordan, Mike, Lewayne, and Chad gush over this reboot (for once) and hope there’s many more to come in the future.

YOUR REVIEWERS

Chad Halvorsen (Screener Squad)

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. Chad is a frequent podcaster, most notably posing as a co-host for the podcast “The Film Illogical Society.”

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. For more of this eccentric nerd, you can follow her on Twitter here and read her original writings on Deepest Corners of My Notebook.

” width=Michael Riojas (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal small ville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. He lives in Austin with his beloved Dachshund-Maltese and trusted sidekick, Dean. He can also be heard on RageSelect. He can be found on Twitter and Instagram.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.
