Matt Frank (Giganticast, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Matt Frank is known in both Japan and America as the “Kaiju King,” having been an artist for IDW’s Godzilla comics since 2011. His work can be found in Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters, Godzilla: History’s Greatest Monster, Godzilla: Legends, Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, and the critically praised Godzilla: Rage Across Time. Matt is also an accomplished Transformers artist, working extensively for both IDW and Fub Publications, as an interior artist and a character designer. Mars Attacks The Transformers and Spotlight: Trailcutter are among his most popular works, and he created four new Transformers characters, the Raptoricons, for the Official Collector’s Club in 2016. In the summer of 2017, Matt made an exclusive poster celebrating the American home video release of Shin Godzilla by Funimation, and is also a featured commentator on the blu-ray special features. He has also contributed covers for Go Go Power Rangers, My Little Pony, and Mars Attacks. Matt is a frequent contributor to both OneofUs.net, where he has his own podcast, The Giganticast, and he a frequent co-host on RageSelect.com’s Let’s Play videos.

Tessa Morrison (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Unstabletop Gamers)

Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. Wrote and contributed to website and magazine Strange Kids Club for five years reviewing films, video games, and Halloween candy. Co-hosted a Public Access show called Ladies of Fandom. Previously guested on podcasts Blood Over Texas, Threequel Club, Trash in the Can, Retro Movie Roundtable, and Nerds with Mics.

HOCUS POCUS 2 MOVIE REVIEW

It’s becoming more and more common these days for sequels to be produced decades after the classic original movie came out, and it’s also become common for those much-too-late continuations to be so-so to just plain bad. So, when Hocus Pocus 2 was announced as a Disney+ release just shy of three decades after the first, it was a safe bet that it would be lackluster. But we can all hope and dream it’ll land in the good camp with the very few sequels that have managed to recapture the magic, can’t we? Or we fans of the original could at least perform some dark magic in order to produce an actually great film. In this installment of what will likely be only the beginning of the HPU, twenty-nine years after the Sanderson sisters were resurrected and destroyed, teenagers Becca and Izzy are preparing to celebrate both Halloween and Becca’s sixteenth birthday. They turn down a party invitation from their estranged friend Cassie, who is more interested in her boyfriend (and bully), Mike. Becca and Izzy visit a magic shop (formerly the Sanderson cottage) run by Gilbert (Sam Richardson), who gifts Becca a certain black candle for her annual birthday ritual. Becca and Izzy light the candle and, as there is a full moon and the girls are both virgins, the candle resurrects the Sanderson sisters once again! From there, some familiar and new hijinks ensue. Harmoni, Kimberly, Dogget, and T.C. gather over the bubbling cauldron of critique to cast their thoughts about Hocus Pocus 2, and there isn’t a consensus here about this film (OR the original).

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. BLONDE MOVIE REVIEW

We are heading into award season and you know what that means… A sensationalized film about a woman of the people thrust into the spotlight with beauty grace and golden hair that charmed the masses, abused and struck down by the very institutions that built her stage and worshiped her ivory mask as the little girl lost behind the porcelain facade wept. But enough about Kristen Stewart playing Princess Diana. Blonde is the Netflix film based on the novel by Joyce Carol Oates about a woman named Norma Jean that would become the legendary actress Marilyn Monroe (Ana de Armas). Lil Norma Jeane (Lily Fisher) is shown a picture of her father on her birthday and she spends the rest of her life searching for that man in the picture in the face of every man she becomes intimately acquainted with, of which there is a large ensemble here played by top tier talent such as Xavier Samuel, Evan Williams, Bobby Cannavale, and Adrien Brody. From time to time the whims of reality are broken as Norma Jean converses with her inner child or unborn baby. Bradly, Frank, and Ben separate the facts from the fiction in the surrealist tale of stardom, question the director/writer Andrew Dominik’s intentions with the subject matter, and ask who’s your daddy to the audience.

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. MY BEST FRIEND’S EXORCISM MOVIE REVIEW

Let’s travel back to 1988… We’re at school, a Catholic one at that (shudders). Abby and Gretchen are two best friends, just trying to make it through High School. At a girls night near an abandoned cabin, Gretchen is possessed by a demon and the only person who gives a shit is Abby. The demon won’t go without a fight though, and uses Gretchen to help sow as much chaos as possible. My Best Friend’s Exorcism is soooo many things, and because of that, it never finds it’s true face. It’s supposed to be a comedy/horror, but sometimes it’s other things that don’t quite line up. Today, T.C., Lewayne, Ben, and Chad share their favorite pea soup recipes.

RESIDENT ALIEN SEASON 2 SERIES REVIEW

Get ready for socially awkward conversations about human anatomy and overindulgence of over processed snack foods from the gas station. Harry the Alien is back in Resident Alien Season 2. Last season concluded with Harry (Alan Tudyk) locating his doomsday device and putting a stop to the end of the world. Moving forward, Harry will fully acclimate into the ways of the earthling society and protect the people he’s come to call his family. With his best friend Asta (Sara Tomko) and a coffeehouse table art book resembling the language of his home planet put together by the artist known as Goliath, Harry will uncover an alien invasion conspiracy that reaches decades into the past. And expect cameos from some sci-fi big stars like Linda Hamilton, Nathan Fillion, Terry O’Quinn and George Takei. It’s a dark comedy with high concept sci-fi that is out of this world. Bradly, Dogget, Jordan, and Neil dissect the big ideas intertwined with the secondary b and c stories, analyze the sophomore slump probability of the second season, and sleuth out who on the podcast may in fact be a visitor from beyond the stars.

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

CYBERPUNK EDGERUNNERS SERIES REVIEW

What’s up you f**king Chooms!? You’re here with Chad, Tessa, and Marcos and we’re dripping with 80’s/future aesthetic today with Cyberpunk Edgerunners, a new anime series streaming on Netflix. The show is based on the video game Cyberpunk which comes with a lot of baggage, depending on if you played the game or not, and if you did, were you day 1 or post-patch? Either way, Edgerunners follows David, a High School dropout who wants to make a name for himself after he comes across some tech that basically gives him The Flash-like powers. The anime is produced by Studio Trigger, and has some impressive scenes, while others feel stale and uninspired. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. Wrote and contributed to website and magazine Strange Kids Club for five years reviewing films, video games, and Halloween candy. Co-hosted a Public Access show called Ladies of Fandom. Me? I come from the South, Out there, beyond the horizon by the big river. Out there where the bandits formed cities, and the gambling is legal. I got into movies like most nerds by watching Tarantino but fell in love with movies through Chinese Cinema for some reason. A few of my favorite things would probably be live music, new experiences, and belt-fed ammunition. DRIFTING HOME MOVIE REVIEW

Acclaimed writer/director of animation Hiroyasu Ishida (Penguin Highway) presents the newest anime film from Netflix, Drifting Home. Little kid friends Kosuke and Natsumi’s have been drifting apart. In Junior High they have their own cliques but back in the day the two were inseparable. When they get the news that the old apartment complex considered haunted by the children is being demolished, the two are drawn back to rekindle that feeling of home one last time. Something supernatural happens like an anime do, and Kosuke, Natsumi, and accompanying friends are spirited away to the middle of the ocean on an apartment which is now a slowly dissolving ship. They’ll have to work through their issues in order to work together to get back home safe and sound. Bradly, Dogget, and Mindy discuss the beauty of the animation, question the overall themes and their presentation, and debate what can or can not have a spirit.

Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. They still give her money for being on HBO that one time, with her name in the credits spelled wrong. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. In the few seconds she gets to herself, Mindy bakes for charity, knits eccentric plushies, plays original RPG’s with her gamemaster husband, and spends time with her soulmate, Batman.

MONA LISA AND THE BLOOD MOON MOVIE REVIEW

Surrealist extraordinaire Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night) is back at her writing desk and comfy in her director’s chair bringing us her third feature film Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon. Mona Lisa Lee (Jeon Jong-seo) has busted out the the asylum using the powers of her mind. Like Carrie after a period, she’s done taking shit and is dishing out a little bit of that ultraviolence. On the streets of New Orleans she’ll meet many a shady but charismatic character, such as a drug dealer with a neon-lit car named Fuzz (Ed Skrein) and a stripper single mother looking for that huge payday named Bonnie (Kate Hudson) with policeman Harold (Craig Robinson) hot on her trail. Mona teams up with another social outcast in Charlie (Evan Whitten) the son of Bonnie, and they are two kindred spirits searching for freedom under the harvest moon of the bayou. Bradly, Tessa, Frank and Wright discuss the power of control told through the wide angle lens, Kate Hudson’s return with an impressive performance, and whether or not the film has an air of boredom or brilliance.

His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. SIDNEY MOVIE REVIEW

Apple+ presents a documentary on the man, the myth, the legend, Sidney Poitier. Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.
