Screener Squad: Piggy

Piggy Movie Review

PIGGY MOVIE REVIEW

Sara is an overweight teen who works at the family butcher shop. One day she’s swimming at the local, public pool and 3 girls harass, bully, and assault her. They take her clothes and make her walk home half naked. Before she makes it back, she witnesses the three mean girls being kidnapped. Instead of letting the authorities know, Sara keeps a secret… but how long can she keep this up? Piggy is an unexpected welcome. This Spanish film doesn’t offer a lot of dialogue, but loads of character study. It’s a thriller, a coming of age film, and at times, is horrific. Come sit down with T.C., Ryan, and Chad, and let these 3 little piggies squeal in delight about this awesome film.

He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. Okay, well how about using the ability to loop back on your own life to recapture the magic of your chance meeting with the potential love of your life? Will romantic comedy hijinks ensue? Mindy, Melina, Ben, and T.C. have a chat about this new time loop rom-com from director Alex Lehmann. This Peacock original follows obsessive Manhattan-native Sheila (Kaley Cuoco) who discovers a time machine in a nail salon and uses it to continually relive one night in order to perfect elements of her titular meet cute and first date with Gary (Pete Davidson). As she does it all over again and again and again, she begins to question if she’ll ever be able to recreate the perfection of that first time. The Squad share their feelings on the unique spin on the Groundhog Day formula that is funny, dark, and touching, but ultimately about the peaks and valleys of relationships, love, and trauma.

Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. They still give her money for being on HBO that one time, with her name in the credits spelled wrong. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. In the few seconds she gets to herself, Mindy bakes for charity, knits eccentric plushies, plays original RPG’s with her gamemaster husband, and spends time with her soulmate, Batman.

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Mr. Harrigan's Phone Movie Review

MR. HARRIGAN’S PHONE MOVIE REVIEW

If you don’t know by now, October is the time for spooky things. “What’s spookier than burying a phone with your very old, very dead, mentor?” Ummm… Spiders… Running out of ice during a Halloween party… reminiscing about the time I lost my virginity to both Freddy and Jason… Huh, I guess a lot of things are scarier than Mr. Harrigan’s Phone. The first half of this movie is basically Jaeden Martell (Craig) reading literary classics to an aging Donald Sutherland (Mr. Harrigan). The performances are solid, but once Mr. Harrigan takes a dirt nap, the movie turns into a story that could be considered by the minority as “scary.” Netflix has a decent movie here, but because I was sold a horror movie, the movie makes a big miss. Rae, Neil, and Chad are here to tell you that you can skip the 2nd half of this movie… But if you’re not looking for a horror movie, you might enjoy the overall performances.

Neil Anderson (Screener Squad)

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

Highly Suspect Reviews: Halloween Ends

Halloween Ends Movie Review

HALLOWEEN ENDS MOVIE REVIEW

We really weren’t expecting when we went in to see the final chapter of David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy that it would end up spawning such a lengthy review. But that’s how Highly Suspect Reviews go sometimes. There was a surprising amount to discuss about this film including whether it’s the best or worst of the trilogy and trying to dodge around spoilers for the first half of the review. Of course, after an announcement, we go full hog spoiler, because, as you’ll see, you kinda have to. The story picks up four years after the last film. Laurie (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) have settled into a relatively normal life in town in a new non-survivalist-compound house while Laurie writes her memoirs. While Michael is whereabouts unknown, Laurie and Allyson have decided to move on with their lives. Meanwhile, a new character named Corey (Rohan Campbell) we see has become a town pariah after an unfortunate accident left a child dead that he was babysitting and everyone believes it was no accident. As Corey, Laurie, and Allyson’s paths cross, there’s a sympathy and an understanding between them. Unfortunately, Corey’s path also crosses with someone else and there’s an understanding there too. Chris, Wright, Alan, and Marco take a stab at Halloween Ends and find that it’s different enough that it requires a rethink of the entire trilogy.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). You can also check out Chris in his videocast, along with Martin Thomas and Danni Danger, that One Of Us does with our friends at Bell of Lost Souls: Crossover Event. He also regularly guests on the video game website Rage Select. Follow Chris on Twitter and Facebook and check out his Amazon Wish List.

The Greatest Beer Run Ever Movie Review

THE GREATEST BEER RUN EVER MOVIE REVIEW

There’s this fine center line that one can ride while drinking copious amounts of alcohol. It’s basically like purgatory for your sobriety. On one side, you’re not drunk enough. Which means you are still capable of making smart decisions. Go to the other side of the line, you’re a stumbling idiot singing Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It.” But if one can manage to walk that fine line, you split the realities of being drunk but still acute in critical thinking. This is where Chickie Donahue (Zac Efron) was when he decided to bring a beer to all his friends who were serving in Vietnam. This is 1967 America. Most people believed in crushing communism because it’s what they were told by their government. From Chickie’s point of view, we’re doing what’s right for the world, and our soldiers deserve a beer for everything they have sacrificed. Chickie hops on a civilian work ship and heads to Vietnam. He does find a lot of his friends, but over time, realizes that what we’re fighting for is all mixed up. Today T.C. Drew, and Chad all throw on Hawaiian shirts to make it look like we’re CIA. It’s hot in Vietnam.

DEADSTREAM MOVIE REVIEW

The found footage genre is a rare treat when it’s done well. A lot of times, like any movie, there’s an overuse of tropes and easy to use plot enhancers, and sometimes creating drama when there is none. Not so with today’s film, Deadstream. Co-Written, Co-Directed, and Starring Joseph Winter, Deadstream follows Shawn Ruddy and his attempt to win back his online followers after a stunt went bad. Shawn has decided to spend the night in a haunted house, and plans to stream the entire thing. With a new sponsor on the line, Shawn is fighting for his financial survival… Which is moot by the time you get to the 2nd act, because guess what?! This house is definitely haunted, and now Shawn has to engage his fears/insecurities head-on. Deadstream is funny, corny, gory… basically all the descriptors for Evil Dead II. Go watch this film, the creators obviously spent a lot of time making this as cool as possible. Melina, Chad, Matt, and Lewayne all give their blessings for this movie, so I say again, watch Deadstream.

Hellraiser Movie Review

HELLRAISER MOVIE REVIEW

Not many film franchises get to eleven movies, and barely any that do manage to maintain a level of quality that will bring in any new fans who may discover the series with one of the latter installments. However, the horror genre is a forgiving one. Fans remain steadfast and diehard, even when the iconic creature or character of the series has nowhere else to go except space! But when that well finally does run dry, and the good faith of those fans fizzle out, there’s always the reboot. And here we are with Hellraiser 2022. Very much attempting to recapture the haunting creepiness of Clive Barker’s 1987 original, based on his novella, this movie once again centers around the Cenobites, including the primary antagonist Pinhead (dubbed so by the fans but officially named The Priest by Barker). The overall plot of any of these movies focuses on a puzzle box that opens a gateway to the Hell-like realm of the Cenobite lifeforms called the Lament Configuration. The Cenobites are an order of former-humans turned-monsters, who harvest human souls to torture in their sadistic experiments. Our main hero this time around is Riley (Odessa A’zion) who is a recovering addict. Her boyfriend ropes her into a robbery where they stumble upon the puzzle box. After naively solving the first configuration, Riley begins the downward spiral through the checklist of Hellraiser-isms. Tessa, Neil, and T.C. thrown on their leather gear and peel back the layers of this new film, and we learn that T.C. clearly has a kink.

Tessa Morrison (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Unstabletop Gamers)

Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. Wrote and contributed to website and magazine Strange Kids Club for five years reviewing films, video games, and Halloween candy. Co-hosted a Public Access show called Ladies of Fandom. Previously guested on podcasts Blood Over Texas, Threequel Club, Trash in the Can, Retro Movie Roundtable, and Nerds with Mics.

Screener Squad: Reservation Dogs Season 2

Reservation Dogs Season 2 Review

RESERVATION DOGS SEASON 2 REVIEW

Twas only a year ago that Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi graced the TV world with their FX series Reservation Dogs. Well before the first season completed its run, Reservation Dogs had already cemented itself as one of the most entertaining and original shows of 2021. Fans were elated when the series was promptly renewed for a second season and now…it’s finally here! Set primarily on a reservation in Oklahoma, Season 2 sees the return of the Reservation Dogs themselves: Bear, Willie Jack, Cheese, and Ellora Danen, four indigenous teens attempting to pilot life and impending adulthood in the wake their friend Daniel’s death. With Ellora now gone in pursuit of California, the once-inseparable group find their friendship at a major crossroads. Bear (D’Phaaoh Woon-A-Tai) in his confusion over Ellora’s abandonment, seeks advice from his goofball spiritual guide (Dallas Goldtooth) while Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis) attempts to undo a curse she believes is responsible for the group’s misfortune. Meanwhile, Cheese (Lane Factor) struggles to maintain his optimistic nature when he finds himself placed in a center for misplaced youth. These are just some of the challenges faced by the characters over the course of the season’s 10-episode run, with heart-wrenching and often hilarious results. Boasting a stellar supporting cast (Zahn McClarnon, Gary Farmer, Sarah Podemski, Wes Studi) Reservation Dogs continues to thrive as a witty and powerful character study, but does its sophomore season pack the emotional punch of the first? That’s what Brad, Elliot, Neil and Melina are here to discuss!

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and Eye on the prize and maybe even provide some comments of his own.

” width=Eliot Nelson (Screener Squad, Staff Writer)

Soaked in the soggy rains of Seattle, Eliot developed a love of sci-fi, movies, cartoons, heavy metal, and all of geekdom. Pursuing his passion for the written word, he got his BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He has since worked exclusively in the foodservice industry, like any liberal arts major worth their salt. Eliot wiles away the hours listening to movie reviews, writing his epic sci-fi novel, and consuming as much media as possible. His favorite movies include The Lord of the Rings, City of God, Dawn of the Dead, and Groundhog Day. When not rambling to himself about the ineptness of entertainment executives, Eliot posts infrequently on Twitter and squawks regularly on his podcast The Debasement Tapes.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)
