RICK AND MORTY – SEASON 8 REVIEW

Since Rick and Morty debuted in 2013 (yes, it’s really been that long), it has grown from an absurd sci-fi comedy into a layered, multiverse-spanning saga full of emotional depth, dark humor, and some surprisingly tight continuity. Rick has evolved from a detached god-complex genius to a man haunted by his past, and Morty has gone from a naïve sidekick into a self-aware, emotionally driven young hero in his own right. With the collapse of the Central Finite Curve, Rick Prime, and Evil Morty’s major shakeups behind us, Season 8 begins in the aftermath — Rick’s long-standing quest for vengeance is now a fresh scar, not a lingering mystery. The Smith family is more autonomous than ever, and new threats emerge from the interdimensional wreckage. T.C. and Mike are slipping through the folds of space, time, and Beth’s walk-in closet to bring their take on Season 8.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. He has released two feature films, The Princess Knight and A Christmas Sunset. He thrives on collaboration and the thrill of sharing stories in all forms.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is an award-winning creative jack of all trades, and is pretty competent with most of them. He is a writer, director, animator, video editor, and motion graphics artist. He has tried his hand at nearly every form of artistic expression at least once. He was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania where he fell in love with film, writing and special effects at an early age. His obsession with film would lead him to being locally known as a “human IMDb” and being on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He would study film in Pittsburgh before taking his talents to Austin. Not letting something like Tourettes get in his way, he has produced a handful of animated short films that have won awards from film festivals all over the globe. He has also written several yet-to-be-produced screenplays and TV pilots, with some of them being recognized in screenwriting competitions. He has even created motion graphics and animations for several clients, from movie theaters to Twitch streamers. When not creating or watching films, he enjoys MST3K, classic video games and buying vinyl records. He loves dogs, dropping obscure pop culture trivia and watching travel videos. He currently resides in Austin Texas and can be followed on the Instamagrams at @ohheyitsmikejm. Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Deliberations of Doom)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar and theater management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).

Wright Sulek (The Other Boss, Trash in the Can, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox. As of 2024, Wright has now been inducted into the Austin Film Critics Association as well as co-owns the One of Us network with Chris Cox.

LITTLE AMELIE OR THE CHARACTER OF RAIN

Maciej Kur is back and he is once again covering the Annecy Animation Festival in France! Spidermike joins him to take a look at some of the wild new animated films from around the world coming out soon. Finally, a French movie from this very French festival of Annecy: the story of Amélie, a little girl who was born a vegetable and unable to develop. But when she turns the age of two and a half, miraculously she starts walking and forming full sentences. It’s easy for her to make this leap, as apparently she is God. The film tells the story from her point of view starting from her unfortunate birth circumstances. But making flowers grow, causing earthquakes and parting the sea takes the second stage to Amélie. With her Belgian parents and siblings moving to Japan, she befriends the house help and learns Japanese customs, as well some important life lessons on the way. And hey, if this story (based on the autobiographical book Amélie et la Métaphysique des Tubes) isn’t enough for you yet, holy cow! The visuals are like an art book come to life!

Maciej Kur is a Polish comic and film script writer, director and reviewer, and decidedly the biggest fan and most loyal supporter of Oneofus.net. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw with a master’s degree and the Academy of Film and Television. Co-creator of the comic book series Dollicious and Emilka Sza (with Magdalena Kania ) and Lil i Put, (with Piotr Bednarczyk ) and many others. Awarded in 2014 for a comic book in the spirit of Janusz Christa and awarded for “Złoty Puchar” in 2023. He wrote scripts for new comic books in the Polish cult series “Kayko and Kokosh”, as well as episodes of an animated series based on it (available on Netflix). He wrote for many other shows including “Kicia Kocia” (Kitty Kotty), “Pompik the Bison”, “Pucio”, “Hip-Hip and Hurra” and the upcoming animated movies “The Shrew of Destiny” and “Tytus, Romek and A’tomek”. The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal Smallville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. INTO THE MORTAL WORLD MOVIE REVIEW

Maciej Kur is back and he is once again covering the Annecy Animation Festival in France! China has been in the CGI game for some time adapting folklore from their rich culture with a modern twist (see White Snake and its sequel The Green Snake) Into the Mortal world starts in the spirit realm where a young man, Jin Feng, is sent into our world to redeem his mother by capturing the 28 star spirits. Followed by his rival, Jin Feng crosses paths with Fanning, a trickster mortal girl seeking to ascend to the divine world to find her mother. After some initial bickering, the two team-up and set off on a quest to capture all the spirits and uncover some secrets from their past. Into the Mortal World is a quick-paste action adventure of true Chinese culture with some fun visuals (as well some very cool 2D portions), sadly brought down a little by some very predictable twists.

THE NAKED GUN MOVIE REVIEW

There’s a handful at best of good absurdist spoof comedies after the early reign of the Zucker/Abrahams films (Airplane, Airplane 2, Top Secret, The Naked Gun series). There’s a LOT of terrible ones. So, the relaunch of the beloved Naked Gun series without the involvement of the original team, and of course without the now departed Leslie Nielsen, had us wary. But Liam Neeson stepping into the shoes of Frank Drebin, or rather, his son, turned out to be genius casting. Frank is an old-school cop who doesn’t like to play by the rules. This gets him in trouble with his boss but his Police Squad team love him. When he is taken off the squad to work automotive collisions, he finds that his first case is actually connected to the bank robbery that got him demoted. With the help of Captain Ed Hocken Jr. (Paul Walter Hauser) and a crime novel writer whose brother was seemingly murdered (Pamela Anderson) he’ll eventually connect the dots to a tech genius Richard Cane (Danny Huston) who has Bond-villain level plans. Meanwhile, with a joke every five seconds or less, it’s either going to be hysterical or endless agony watching The Naked Gun. Fortunately for Chris, Wright, Marco, and Nathan, it was the former.

Nathan Flynn is the resident goofball of One of Us. Net, often found overly caffeinated, slightly stoned, and ready to unleash the hottest takes imaginable. As the resident Letterboxd Lunatic, his movie opinions are as bold as his love for Top Gun: Maverick — a film he considers less of a movie and more of a religion. When he’s not passionately defending his latest cinematic obsession, Nathan manages a comedy club in downtown Austin, where he’s somehow avoided being heckled… so far. Around here, he’s usually the punching bag, but hey, someone’s gotta do it.

POKER FACE SEASON 2 REVIEW

Rian Johnson and Natasha Lyonne are back with another season of Poker Face, their acclaimed murder-of-the-week mystery series. Charlie Cale (Lyonne) has an unusual talent, she’s a human bullshit detector who instantly knows whenever someone is lying. When her gift gets her into trouble with a Las Vegas crime family, she goes on the lam, moving from town to town, looking for work and a hiding place from the hitmen on her trail. Unfortunately for Charlie, people have a way of getting killed whenever she’s around, and given her freaky ability, she inevitably finds herself solving a new murder in a new town every week. Inspired by past shows such as The Fugitive and Columbo, Poker Face is a throwback to classic episodic television that’s built on a tried and true narrative template, anchored by a charismatic leading actor, and boasts more celebrity guest stars than a marathon of Hollywood Squares reruns. But is that enough to sustain the show’s momentum? Must the show change up its formula or should it lean harder into what made it work in the first place? To solve those mysteries, Jordan, Kim, and Marco hit the road, hit their vape pens, and hit the record button. Together, they’ll review the evidence, question the motives, and list their suspects for favorite (and least favorite) episodes of this new season.

Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BETTE & JOAN – EP 10 – SPECIAL GUEST STARS

“You don’t trust women very much, do you?”

Welcome to another episode of What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan?, our ongoing journey through late-era Bette Davis & Joan Crawford. As we near the end of our exploration, I thought we’d pay tribute to the collection of guest appearances the two actresses made in their post-Baby Jane years. When good screen roles eluded them in the 60s and 70s, the ever-changing medium of television welcomed them with open arms. This gave Bette & Joan the ability to appear in some of the most popular shows of the era, including Perry Mason and The Virginian. These opportunities also allowed the two stars to take on a variety of characters, including businesswomen, vengeful widows, and even a jewel thief. Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. MONSTER ISLAND MOVIE REVIEW

Secluded island paradise? Yes please? Oh wait a sec, it’s in the middle of WWII and instead of a getaway you’re a marooned castaway, chained to an enemy soldier. Maybe not such a great vacation. What could be worse than that? How about a creature from the black lagoon? Monster Island (on Shudder) re-establishes that the enemy of your enemy is your friend, and common enemies make for good conflict resolution. Saito (Dean Fujioka) is a Japanese soldier on a ship full of prisoners of war and traitors to the cause. The ship wrecks and maroons him on an island, chained to a British soldier named Bronson (Callum Woodhouse). Former combatants become brothers in arms as the island unleashes its deadly secret upon them from the darkest parts of the jungle. Living to fight another day is the top priority. Bradly, Lewayne, and Kate bring out the 70’s nostalgia B-movie monster mash references to uplift the film, marvel at the physical performance in a practical suit by Alan Maxson as the mysterious creature, then to close it all off, a lecture on editing. Should there be more cuts to film then bodies in a creature feature? You decide!

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Kate Chambers (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Kate is a certified horror fiend and Horse Girl™. Her name isn’t short for anything. A native Austinite, she graduated with a BFA in Film Production from the University of Colorado Boulder then returned to the Lone Star State to make her home amid the cinephiles of the Alamo Drafthouse and the Austin Film Society. In her spare time, you can find her either down at the barn with her noble steed Jazz, watching as many movies as possible (often at work), cuddling with her pair of black cats and writing horror scripts, or nursing a beer in any available body of water… or doing Duolingo, where she’s currently on a 1000+ day streak.

LAZARUS SERIES REVIEW

Sometimes when the world has got you down you just wanna take the edge off. Doctor Skinner has created a drug called Hapna which has all the benefits of a pain killer without any of the detrimental benefits. Physical or mental pain? Hapna can take it all away, and it’s over the counter FDA approved. Everyone in the world is taking Hapna, but its creator Dr. Skinner mysteriously disappears only to resurface three years later and declare that everyone on Hapna will die in 30 days. From legendary anime creator Shin’ichirô Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo) this 13 episode Sci-Fi thriller puts the agency Lazarus up to the task of finding Dr. Skinner, creating an antibody, and saving the world. The leader of Lazarus, Hersch, is a former colleague of Doctor Skinner. Axel is the parkour houdini who can get out of any cage. Eleina is their hacker extraordinaire. Doug is the weapons and driving expert with extensive knowledge of several criminal syndicates. Christine is an ex spy with enough cool and swagger to infiltrate any situation. Leland is a young high school student smarter than the average yeet. Together they’ll discover each other’s pasts to inspire each other’s futures. Bradly, Kim, and Dogget come together from the love for Cowboy Bebop hoping to view another timeless tale of visually explosive anime and musical excellence. Does Shin’ichirô Watanabe’s modern anime live up to his legacy? Or will fans reject the future stories by clamouring for the past?

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. SAINT CLARE MOVIE REVIEW

You know what they say about walking home alone at night, especially if you are a promising young woman. Always have a buddy. What if a buddy would just get in the way of your calling; a calling by God to take down all the sexual deviants and pathetic men that don’t take no for an answer? List or no list, Clare’s on a mission to cleanse the school campus of sex trafficking cabals. Saint Clare follows Clare Bleecker (Bella Thorne) who has a childhood trauma she’s handling through a kind of exposure therapy…exposing bad guys by killing them! With her trusty, not really their sidekick, Mailman Bob (Frank Whaley), and her legal guardian grandmother, Gigi (Rebecca De Mornay), she’ll have to decide if putting herself at constant risk is worth eliminating the risk of others being put in danger. Especially now that Detective Rich Timmons (Ryan Phillippe) is hot on her trail. Bradly, Frank, and Lewayne dissect the genres mashed up in such a short period of time, the early feature films of Mitzi Peirone, and drop bread crumbs of knowledge regarding another young woman who was called by God and thrust into sainthood through acts of violence against an oppressive patriarch.
