THE UNHOLY TRINITY MOVIE REVIEW

Death looms over a town with a sketchy past drowned in whiskey from high noon to midnight saloon time with ladies of the evening. A stranger appears by the name of Henry Broadway (Brandon Lessard) who has local family ties…and he’s out for vengeance against the man who wronged his Pa. The Irish Sheriff Gabriel Dove (Pierce Brosnan) explains to him that the man he’s look’n fer is long dead and has no history of wronging a soul. St. Christopher (Samuel L. Jackson) may be the key for Henry in unlocking a buried past and bringing honour back to the Broadway name. The Unholy Trinity is playing in theaters across the nation and coming soon to digital. Bradly, Kate, & Jordan drift in and out of cowboy speak while discussing the carrying star power of Pierce Brosnan and Samuel L Jackson. They discuss the great cowboy actors of the past from Costner to Duvall, and play white and black hats about all the bullseyes and big misses in this newest western that you’ll have to mosey on down to the moving picture house to witness.

Kate is a certified horror fiend and Horse Girl™. Her name isn’t short for anything. A native Austinite, she graduated with a BFA in Film Production from the University of Colorado Boulder then returned to the Lone Star State to make her home amid the cinephiles of the Alamo Drafthouse and the Austin Film Society. In her spare time, you can find her either down at the barn with her noble steed Jazz, watching as many movies as possible (often at work), cuddling with her pair of black cats and writing horror scripts, or nursing a beer in any available body of water… or doing Duolingo, where she’s currently on a 1000+ day streak.

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. BEST WISHES TO ALL MOVIE REVIEW

When you’re a kid you don’t really notice the routines of your parents until you leave the house and take a peek through the kitchen window. On the outside looking in you might notice some things overlooked by the wide eyes of your innocent childhood. Father stressed about work. Mother’s anxiety over the well prepared meal. Maybe even a ritual akin to the occult. Adapted from their short film, writer director Yûta Shimotsu presents Best Wishes to All. Training to be a nurse in the big city of Tokyo, the unnamed protagonist (Kotone Furukawa) returns to the countryside to visit her grandparents’ home. As a child, the miso soup dinners with her grandparents are a precious memory, although the activities of the house at night was the stuff of nightmares. Best Wishes to All is an unsettling, claustrophobic thriller about what a person is willing to take from another in order to secure their future and stoke the fires of their own happiness. Bradly, Drew, and Lewayne call upon the powers of the ancient critics to remain as vague as possible, implementing the awkward silence, astute reference, and nuanced quotations of film makers past in discussing the first step of a possible future J-horror classic.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

28 YEARS LATER MOVIE REVIEW

With 28 Days Later‘s explosive success, Danny Boyle’s Oscar win with Slumdog Millionaire, and Alex Garland’s own film career, it’s not entirely surprising to see these filmmakers go back to the zombie well. 28 Years Later is the third film in the horror franchise and you guessed it, takes 28 years after the Rage Virus ravaged all of England. This story focuses on a community located on the secluded Holy Island, Lindisfarne, and introduces us to family who’s experiencing some troubles. Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is the confident and somewhat brash father to Spike (Alfie Williams) who takes his son on his first “hunt” on the mainland. As they navigate the dangerous terrain still infested with the infected, you witness Jamie push Spike to his limits as he tries to kill as many infected as possible, but comes up short when the situation becomes dire. As they barely make it back to the island, Jamie regales the community of Spike’s success, but in turn pushes Spike further away with his lies of their time on the mainland. Spike takes comfort in his mother, Isla (Jodie Comer), but her situation is much worse as she’s constantly confused, tired, and very sick. With no one else in his corner and a lead on a doctor on the mainland, Spike takes his mother to find said doctor to hopefully cure her of their illness. The film’s tone is quite different from the previous films where they focused more on the idea of survival in this cruel new world, 28 Years Later has a more character driven approach where the infected become more window dressing. The film certainly can be divisive; it’s not trying to recreate the previous two films, but some characters have questionable motivations and there are uneven tonal shifts. Nathan Flynn is the resident goofball of One of Us. Net, often found overly caffeinated, slightly stoned, and ready to unleash the hottest takes imaginable. As the resident Letterboxd Lunatic, his movie opinions are as bold as his love for Top Gun: Maverick — a film he considers less of a movie and more of a religion. When he’s not passionately defending his latest cinematic obsession, Nathan manages a comedy club in downtown Austin, where he’s somehow avoided being heckled… so far. Around here, he’s usually the punching bag, but hey, someone’s gotta do it.

Ben Glasthal (Highly Suspect Review, Screener Squad, Breakfast Pub, Unstabletop Gamers, Video and Audio Editor)

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. For the rest of his free time, he can be found biking, drinking craft beer, being an amateur photographer, and playing video games by himself or on Twitch. DEEP COVER MOVIE REVIEW

The Screener Squad gathers in the One Of Us backroom to chat in secret about this comedic crime caper, Deep Cover. Kat Boyles (Bryce Dallas Howard) is a struggling improv teacher turned undercover asset for the London police. Recruited by Detective Sergeant Graham Billings (Sean Bean), Kat brings along two unlikely partners—an intense wannabe thespian (Orlando Bloom) and an awkward IT worker (Nick Mohammed)—to pose as criminals in a sting operation. But their improv skills lead them to better success than planned as they accidentally infiltrate a major criminal operation led by a boss named Fly (Paddy Considine). What starts as a minor assignment snowballs into full-on bloody slapstick as the trio becomes too convincing for their own good. T.C. The Mastermind, alongside Lewayne “The Pencil” and Melina “The Animal Wrangler” break down the film’s mix of sharp performances and improv-fueled chaos.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

DOGMA 25TH ANNIVERSARY MOVIE REVIEW

Jesus was beaten, bled, died for your sins and if ye so believe in him thou will be saved. Guilt, shame, and discipline are the blessings on the path to righteousness. These doctrines served the purpose of frightening kids and adults into attempting a life of virtue for years to come. The archaic and obtuse teachings, according to the media, are passe. In response, Cardinal Glick (George Carlin) would say “Christ didn’t come to earth to give us the willies, he came to help us out. He was a booster!” Then unveiling a new, everyday, friendly, neighborhood Jesus, The Buddy Christ. Exiled angels Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck) get word of this drastic change to Dogma on Earth and will seize the opportunity to return to heaven, unaware that if they succeed, all life that ever is or will be will cease in the twinkling of an eye. Bethany (Linda Fiorentino) is reluctantly assigned the task of stopping the two angels by Metatron (Alan Rickman) and she is accompanied by the two prophets Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith), the forgotten apostle named Rufus (Chris Rock), and a cinephile stripper muse named Serendipity (Salma Hayek). For 25 years, Kevin Smith’s religious satirical and philosophical masterpiece has entertained adolescents and adults of all kinds of belief and culture. Debuting at Cannes this year was this remastered version (that adds on some after-credit bonus features). Bradly, Mike, and Frank discuss their relationship with religion, 90s and early 2000 cinema, and the films of Kevin Smith to determine once and for all if Dogma is not only Smiths best but the best film about Us, God, and everything in between.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is an award-winning creative jack of all trades, and is pretty competent with most of them. He is a writer, director, animator, video editor, and motion graphics artist. He has tried his hand at nearly every form of artistic expression at least once. He was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania where he fell in love with film, writing and special effects at an early age. His obsession with film would lead him to being locally known as a “human IMDb” and being on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He would study film in Pittsburgh before taking his talents to Austin. Not letting something like Tourettes get in his way, he has produced a handful of animated short films that have won awards from film festivals all over the globe. He has also written several yet-to-be-produced screenplays and TV pilots, with some of them being recognized in screenwriting competitions. He has even created motion graphics and animations for several clients, from movie theaters to Twitch streamers. When not creating or watching films, he enjoys MST3K, classic video games and buying vinyl records. He loves dogs, dropping obscure pop culture trivia and watching travel videos. WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BETTE & JOAN? EPISODE 7 – “Della” and “Where Love Has Gone”

In our 7th episode, we go camping with Bette & Joan in a pair of projects that aimed for artful drama but quickly devolved into exercises in laugh-out-loud camp. While the two actresses couldn’t seem to escape the grande dame guignol horror label, both Davis & Crawford attempted to distance themselves by taking on films they would have done a decade or so before. Although both 1965’s Della, starring Joan Crawford, and 1964’s Where Love Has Gone, starring Bette Davis, aimed to tell stories about complicated mothers and daughters, both can’t help but come across as overly dramatic and dated at the time they were made. Host of the podcast Window Dressing, Madelaine Jane Aubel, joins me as we witness Bette & Joan sink their teeth into their parts.

MATERIALISTS MOVIE REVIEW

Take one professional matchmaker for the rich and superficial (Dakota Johnson), one ex-boyfriend with all the looks and personality but no money (Chris Evans), and one absurdly rich dude who is that rare one that doesn’t seem to be a total schmuck (Pedro Pascal), and you get the love triangle that makes up A24’s latest film Materialists. Marketed as a ‘romantic comedy’, one of the things Chris, Marco, Kate, and Wright DO agree on is that it’s definitely a romantic drama with only bits of humor. Johnson is a top-level matchmaker but her shizz gets shook when one of her clients is sexually assaulted by the date she set her up with. Meanwhile, she’s being pursued by Pascal who she keeps trying to convince that she’s not good enough for, since he is, by her words, completely perfect. But is he perfect for her? In the background and always there to be a friend, but who clearly wouldn’t mind a second chance, is Evans. He may not ever have much money, and on paper it makes no sense that he and Johnson should be together, but, well, you get the idea. Our thoughts ranged from ‘loved it’ to ‘a film as shallow as its unlikable protagonist’ but results do vary. We’ll be curious to see what you think, but listen to our review first before you make up your mind on Materialists.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar and theater management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).

Wright Sulek (The Other Boss, Trash in the Can, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox. As of 2024, Wright has now been inducted into the Austin Film Critics Association as well as co-owns the One of Us network with Chris Cox.

Kate is a certified horror fiend and Horse Girl™. Her name isn’t short for anything. A native Austinite, she graduated with a BFA in Film Production from the University of Colorado Boulder then returned to the Lone Star State to make her home amid the cinephiles of the Alamo Drafthouse and the Austin Film Society. PREDATOR: KILLER OF KILLERS REVIEW

After proving he understands the Predator franchise better than anyone else with 2022’s incredible Prey, Dan Trachtenberg returns with an animated anthology film of action, gore, thrills and kills. Told in three chapters, we get to see Predators battle a Viking warrior out for revenge against the warlord who slayed her father, a Japanese samurai who has spent his life preparing to face his brother, and a World War II fighter pilot mechanic who dreams of being up in the air. But while these men and women face the demons of their own making, they have one of the universe’s greatest hunters stalking them from the shadows and smoke. And Melina, Lewayne, and T.C. are here for it. Beautifully animated, Predator: Killer of Killers proves that there is not only still blood in this franchise’s veins, but there is a whole world – a whole universe – waiting to be explored. T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. THE LAST OF US SEASON 2 REVIEW

In December of 2022, The Last of us Part 2 was the undisputed game of the year, and fans and haters alike took to the internet to express their joy and disdain. On March 5, 2023 in the TV adaptation first season finale, Joel concluded the first game’s storyline by destroying the world in order to save his own. Now present day, the second season has concluded and fans of the show and the games can start the process of loving, hating, and healing once more, until Season 3. It’s been 5 years since Joel (Pedro Pascal) rescued Ellie from the Fireflies in Salt Lake city, looked her dead in the eyes, and lied to her face about what went down. Ellie and Joel are drifting apart, Joel is seeing the town therapist Gail (Catherine O’hara) while Ellie is throwing herself into patrols with Jesse (Young Mazino) and Dina (Isabel Merced). It’s a simple life full of community and routine in the compound that Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and Maria (Rutina Wesley) have cultivated. Five years and hundreds of miles away just isn’t enough time and distance from a past wrought with violence though. Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) knows what really went down in Salt Lake city, and with a militia on hand is set to track down Joel and bring him to justice with a side of vengeance. Bradly, Kate, and Lewayne are the one of us tackling The Last of Us Season 2 with none of us experts on the game and one completely diving into the dark. The three navigate a river of amazing performances, unsettling themes, and violence that could be too messed up to share with anyone else. Does Pedro Pascal maintain his hot dad status with the portrayal of Joel or are some choices impossible to forgive?

FEAR STREET: PROM QUEEN MOVIE REVIEW

You know what they say about successful trilogies with satisfying conclusions? They gotta make another one now. After the huge success of R. L. Stine’s Fear Street trilogy adaptation on Netflix in 2021, it was only a matter of time before Netflix tried again to adapt the greatest YA horror author of all time with Fear Street: Prom Queen. It’s the 80’s and all the teens are gearing up to go to prom. Lori Granger (India Fowler) is ready to step out of the shadow of her family’s dark history and into the lights from a disco ball to a brighter future; A future with some hot arm candy and the tiara of prom queen royalty adorning her brow. Mean girl Tiffany Falconer (Fina Strazza) who’s always had an irrational hatred for the Granger’s and their history is doing everything she can to make Lori feel small. What’s much worse is that a murderer in a red raincoat and a mask is on the loose killing prom queen candidates! Talk about a buzz kill. Bradly, Frank, and Mike praise the works of Stine and pan the horror prom nights of the past while discussing this whodunnit murder mystery with plenty of 80’s injected into it. Also in a rare occurrence, Bradly put down the editing scissors and left in a flub of words that resulted in complimenting a beloved member of the one us crew, but which of us is the one.. OF US?

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan?)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is an award-winning creative jack of all trades, and is pretty competent with most of them. He is a writer, director, animator, video editor, and motion graphics artist. He has tried his hand at nearly every form of artistic expression at least once. He was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania where he fell in love with film, writing and special effects at an early age. His obsession with film would lead him to being locally known as a “human IMDb” and being on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He would study film in Pittsburgh before taking his talents to Austin. Not letting something like Tourettes get in his way, he has produced a handful of animated short films that have won awards from film festivals all over the globe. He has also written several yet-to-be-produced screenplays and TV pilots, with some of them being recognized in screenwriting competitions. He has even created motion graphics and animations for several clients, from movie theaters to Twitch streamers. When not creating or watching films, he enjoys MST3K, classic video games and buying vinyl records. He loves dogs, dropping obscure pop culture trivia and watching travel videos.
