SHE-HULK: ATTORNEY AT LAW SERIES REVIEW

After a freak accident, attorney Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) is contaminated by her cousin’s blood which contains lethal levels of gamma radiation. Ordinarily, that would mean death, but when your genetic cousin is Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), the Incredible Hulk himself, that means you get Hulk powers, too. Unfortunately for Jen, balancing her personal life with a career in a male dominated profession is about to get exponentially more difficult once the world learns she has superpowers. While humor has always been a staple of the MCU, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is Marvel Studio’s first live action situation comedy. A very self-aware, very meta, legal sitcom, to be exact. Years before Deadpool hit the comic book stands, She-Hulk was smashing the fourth wall, and offering up a stream of in-jokes and metacommentary that skewered the superhero genre, the comic book industry, and fan expectations. Like her comic book counterpart, TV show Jen knows she’s a character in a TV show and often addresses the audience to critique toxic fanboys, the show’s writing, and Marvel’s own formulaic approach to blockbuster story-telling. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has a stacked cast, fun MCU cameos, and an irreverent sense of meta-humor, but was that enough to successfully make the transition from page to screen? Our crack legal team Harmoni, Beau, Sarah Jane, and Marco overrule any objections from online trolls, and deliver their final arguments for why you should give this sweet and silly show a fair trial.

VENUS MOVIE REVIEW

Directed by Jaume Balagueró (one of the directing team of the fantastic Rec series) Venus may take its inspiration from H.P. Lovecraft, but Wright and Chris likened it to Dario Argento’s Three Mothers trilogy. As in, this is the The Mother of All Tears film we wish we had gotten. Lucia is a go-go dancer on the run from some very bad guys who she’s stolen a bag full of drugs from. She’s run to her sister Rocio, who she’s not on very good terms with, and Rocio’s daughter Alba. They live in a very old apartment building scheduled soon for demolition. And that’s not even close to the worst thing about the building. Vengeful mobsters are one thing, supernatural forces of evil that are targeting you for possession are quite another thing. Join your critics as they praise the horrors of Venus.

BIRDEMIC 3: SEA EAGLE MOVIE REVIEW

We’ve told you about many of the best of the fest movies from this year at Fantastic Fest. Now get ready for the worst one. Although, I guess that’s the point. As you can hear from Chris and Wright in their review, your results may vary as to whether this is pure pleasure or an abomination that should be burned. If you’ve seen the original Birdemic (and I’m sorry) this is more of the same, really. It’s not good on the level of…well, every possible level. Just listen to the review if you enjoy hearing Chris in deep pain.

THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN MOVIE REVIEW

Writer/director Martin McDonagh has reunited with Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, the two stars of his wonderful and criminally underseen In Bruges, for this new pitch-black comedy set in a small town during the Irish Civil War. Farrell and Gleeson have been drinking buddies for ages but when one day Gleeson up and decides he just doesn’t want to be friends with Farrell anymore, chaos erupts. He doesn’t really have a specific reason or anything Farrell did, he’s just ultimately tired of banality. Farrell doesn’t take this well and Gleeson’s response to Farrell’s pleading is…extreme. Listen to Wright and Alan take on this highly anticipated film that we were lucky enough to get at Fantastic Fest this year.

HOLY SPIDER MOVIE REVIEW

Wright and Chris return for one last round of (very late) Fantastic Fest reviews, but we had to get these final ones out to you. First up is Holy Spider, based on the true story of an Iranian serial killer who targeted sex workers. The film created a fictional female journalist in Rahimi (Zar Amir Ebrahimi who won Best Actress in Cannes this year for her performance). Even though this prolific killer seems sloppy in their work, the police seem largely uninterested in catching them. This is because, of course, this is Iran and a good portion of the populace looks at a serial killer who only kills prostitutes as not a bad thing. The film is absolutely chilling to watch, and not so much in a horror movie way but in a ‘yes, there are a lot of people who really think this’ way. Check out our review.

AMSTERDAM MOVIE REVIEW

Based (loosely, very loosely) on the Business Plot of 1933, David O. Russell’s Amsterdam follows three old friends who come back together through complicated plot devices to clear the names of two of them for a murder they didn’t commit, and figure out who killed someone and why. That’s the most basic way to describe this very not basic movie. Burt (Christian Bale) is a doctor injured from WWI who upon his return learned that the upper crust of medical society has no real interest in treating returning indigent soldiers so he forms his own barely legal practice to help them. Harold (John David Washington) is also a veteran who became close with Burt during the war and now is a lawyer. Valerie (Margot Robbie) was a nurse they met and became instant besties with overseas. The three absconded to Amsterdam to live a life of fun and art until Burt’s responsibilities led him to break the ‘pact’ and return home. Many years later Burt and Harold find themselves taking a case brought by the daughter of their old beloved General who believes he did not die recently of natural causes but was murdered. When she ends up killed right in front of them and the murderer loudly points the finger at them, they end up on the run and trying to figure out what the hell is going on. This leads to them reconnecting with Valerie in an unexpected way and the trio is on the hunt for the killer or killers while trying to avoid prosecution themselves. All this leads to a giant conspiracy (the part actually based on reality, look it up as it will sound awfully familiar), wacky hijinks, and a lot of familiar actors and actresses. Chris, Ben, and Frank certainly don’t get the hate this movie has engendered in some, but aren’t going to overpraise it either. Listen to their review.

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. PIGGY MOVIE REVIEW

Sara is an overweight teen who works at the family butcher shop. One day she’s swimming at the local, public pool and 3 girls harass, bully, and assault her. They take her clothes and make her walk home half naked. Before she makes it back, she witnesses the three mean girls being kidnapped. Instead of letting the authorities know, Sara keeps a secret… but how long can she keep this up? Piggy is an unexpected welcome. This Spanish film doesn’t offer a lot of dialogue, but loads of character study. It’s a thriller, a coming of age film, and at times, is horrific. Come sit down with T.C., Ryan, and Chad, and let these 3 little piggies squeal in delight about this awesome film.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. Chad Halvorsen (Screener Squad)

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. MEET CUTE MOVIE REVIEW

What would you do if you could travel through time? Kill Hitler? That’s a classic, but then you might end up with a real Smitson. Who? Exactly. Okay, well how about using the ability to loop back on your own life to recapture the magic of your chance meeting with the potential love of your life? Will romantic comedy hijinks ensue? Mindy, Melina, Ben, and T.C. have a chat about this new time loop rom-com from director Alex Lehmann. This Peacock original follows obsessive Manhattan-native Sheila (Kaley Cuoco) who discovers a time machine in a nail salon and uses it to continually relive one night in order to perfect elements of her titular meet cute and first date with Gary (Pete Davidson). As she does it all over again and again and again, she begins to question if she’ll ever be able to recreate the perfection of that first time. The Squad share their feelings on the unique spin on the Groundhog Day formula that is funny, dark, and touching, but ultimately about the peaks and valleys of relationships, love, and trauma.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. He has released two feature films, The Princess Knight and A Christmas Sunset. He thrives on collaboration and the thrill of sharing stories in all forms.

Mindy Rast-Keenan (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. They still give her money for being on HBO that one time, with her name in the credits spelled wrong. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. In the few seconds she gets to herself, Mindy bakes for charity, knits eccentric plushies, plays original RPG’s with her gamemaster husband, and spends time with her soulmate, Batman.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Ben Glasthal (Highly Suspect Review, Screener Squad, Breakfast Pub, Unstabletop Gamers, Video and Audio Editor)

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. For the rest of his free time, he can be found biking, drinking craft beer, being an amateur photographer, and playing video games by himself or on Twitch. MR. HARRIGAN’S PHONE MOVIE REVIEW

If you don’t know by now, October is the time for spooky things. “What’s spookier than burying a phone with your very old, very dead, mentor?” Ummm… Spiders… Running out of ice during a Halloween party… reminiscing about the time I lost my virginity to both Freddy and Jason… Huh, I guess a lot of things are scarier than Mr. Harrigan’s Phone. The first half of this movie is basically Jaeden Martell (Craig) reading literary classics to an aging Donald Sutherland (Mr. Harrigan). The performances are solid, but once Mr. Harrigan takes a dirt nap, the movie turns into a story that could be considered by the minority as “scary.” Netflix has a decent movie here, but because I was sold a horror movie, the movie makes a big miss. Rae, Neil, and Chad are here to tell you that you can skip the 2nd half of this movie… But if you’re not looking for a horror movie, you might enjoy the overall performances.

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

HALLOWEEN ENDS MOVIE REVIEW

We really weren’t expecting when we went in to see the final chapter of David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy that it would end up spawning such a lengthy review. But that’s how Highly Suspect Reviews go sometimes. There was a surprising amount to discuss about this film including whether it’s the best or worst of the trilogy and trying to dodge around spoilers for the first half of the review. Of course, after an announcement, we go full hog spoiler, because, as you’ll see, you kinda have to. The story picks up four years after the last film. Laurie (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) have settled into a relatively normal life in town in a new non-survivalist-compound house while Laurie writes her memoirs. While Michael is whereabouts unknown, Laurie and Allyson have decided to move on with their lives. Meanwhile, a new character named Corey (Rohan Campbell) we see has become a town pariah after an unfortunate accident left a child dead that he was babysitting and everyone believes it was no accident. As Corey, Laurie, and Allyson’s paths cross, there’s a sympathy and an understanding between them. Unfortunately, Corey’s path also crosses with someone else and there’s an understanding there too. Chris, Wright, Alan, and Marco take a stab at Halloween Ends and find that it’s different enough that it requires a rethink of the entire trilogy.
