FURIES MOVIE REVIEW

In Greek mythology, the Furies were a trio of very powerful and angry goddesses who punished men who did bad things, particularly to women. They were a force of justice, but also a force to be reckoned with. So, it is a well chosen title for the newest Netflix female driven revenge action flick directed by and starring Veronica Ngo (The Princess; The Guard). Bee (Dong Anh Quynh) is a young woman who has been living on the streets of Saigon since the brutal murder of her mother many years ago. One night, as she is being attacked by a group of men, she is rescued by Thanh (Toc Tien), who brings her into a small operation led by a mysterious woman who trains her trio of Furies to take revenge on a criminal gang who abuse, rape, and traffic females. The three lady warriors risk everything to challenge this corrupt empire. As a disclaimer right up front, this opens with a graphic assault, rape, and murder. Please be aware of that as you go into this movie. Mindy, Ben, and T.C. discuss the well crafted action, the less than well crafted script, and the sometimes difficult to swallow logic that will either win over an audience of action junkies or entirely turn off viewers looking for something slightly deeper than a playthrough of a very good looking video game.

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. They still give her money for being on HBO that one time, with her name in the credits spelled wrong. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. In the few seconds she gets to herself, Mindy bakes for charity, knits eccentric plushies, plays original RPG’s with her gamemaster husband, and spends time with her soulmate, Batman.

MALUM MOVIE REVIEW

Writer/Director Anthony DiBlasi has been making horror movies for a while now. One of them is called Last Shift, released in 2014. Well apparently he liked the idea so much, he essentially re-(made/booted) his own film. Which brings us to today’s film, Malum. It tells the story of a rookie cop’s first night on the job. Officer Loren takes a shift at a defunct station, about to close, that happened to be the station where her daddy cop, committed a murder/suicide. This is not a coincidence, and you can bet Officer Loren regrets her decision pretty quickly. The meat of the movie really doesn’t happen until midway through the 2nd act. It earns some genuine scares, but seems off balance. T.C., Lewayne, and Chad all have PTSD from the “flashlight scene.” ughhhhh…. Please hug them.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Chad Halvorsen (Screener Squad)

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. Chad is a frequent podcaster, most notably posing as a co-host for the podcast “The Film Illogical Society.”

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). THE MAGICIAN’S ELEPHANT MOVIE REVIEW

Do you have bored kids on a Friday afternoon and all the theatrical runs are being ruled by John Wick 4? No kid friendly films for as far as the eye can see? Fear not Moms and Dads, Netflix has got you covered. Based on the beloved children’s book by Kate DiCamillo, The Magician’s Elephant is a family film for all ages. An ensemble of character actor favourites such as Noah Jupe, Mandy Patinkin, Brian Tyree Henry, and Natasia Demetriou, bring life to a lifeless town picking up the pieces of broken hearts in the aftermath of war and despair. An orphan named Peter (Noah Jupe) at market one day decides to spend his one coin on a fortune teller instead of a fish dinner. The fortune teller (Natasia Demetriou) tells him his sister is alive and to find her he must follow the elephant. Unfortunately, no elephants are generally hanging around. As luck would have it, a failing magician (Benedict Wong) desperate to entertain the people of this sad sack town, accidentally conjures up an elephant out of thin air. The elephant is enslaved by the king who will gladly give up the elephant to anyone who can perform three impossible tasks. Bradly, Melina, and Frank are up to the impossible task of criticizing of this beloved classic and discuss whether or not the magic of the book was left behind when adapted straight to streaming content.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. ATTACK ON TITAN – THE FINAL SEASON – PT.3

What’s up with all the shaking cups of water and that ominous thundering sound? It’s not T-Rex on a stroll this time. It’s the long awaited highly anticipated Rumbling in Attack on Titan The Final Season Part 2 special Episode 1 penultimate special! Protagonist turned antagonist character turned wunderkind Eren Yeager has activated the Rumbling. Titans of massive size will slowly walk across the world stamping out all life except for that of Eren’s friends and family on the island of paradise. Mikasa, Armin, Hanje, Levi, and the remaining scouting corps from seasons long past must escape the global genocide and engage in one final gambit against Eren and the power of the founding titan. After 10 years, all the pieces will finally be moved into place. Bradly, Jena, Shak, and Dogget give their hearts to the ongoing anime series and discuss the horrors of the Rumbling, what characters they are still rooting for and what characters can be stomped on for all they care, and ponder if the decade long wait was well worth it. Attack on Titan the final season marches on.

As you can see, depending on when you met this Oakland, California native, you have experienced a completely different person, each time. After finally deciding on a 13+year career choice as a Videographer and Radio Personality, Jena balances her time between pursuing her Doctorate in Philosophy, providing insightful and funny critiques on films and Television, raising her daughter and dog in Ohio, and constantly fighting off the existential dread that is being a dope black woman in America in the 20th century.

HISTORY OF THE WORLD, PART II SERIES REVIEW

Better late than never…” some would say. It’s been over 40 years since History of the World, Part 1 graced the silver screen, so now it’s Hulu’s turn (along with Nick Kroll, Ike Barinholtz, Wanda Sykes, and Mel Brooks as Exec Producers) to put history in perspective. If you’re a fan of Mel’s sketch comedy, especially the way the first movie was presented, HOTWP2 picks on history. We do get some POC representation, but the focus is mostly on Western European affairs with a Jewish lens. That’s where Mel likes to play and he’s earned the right. The show takes a bit to get going, but it has a lot to offer. At least that’s what Jordan, Mindy, and Chad think. It has some flaws but overall, HOTWP2 is worth a roll in the hay.

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. Mindy Rast-Keenan (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. They still give her money for being on HBO that one time, with her name in the credits spelled wrong. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. In the few seconds she gets to herself, Mindy bakes for charity, knits eccentric plushies, plays original RPG’s with her gamemaster husband, and spends time with her soulmate, Batman.

JOHN WICK CHAPTER 4 MOVIE REVIEW

Well, Mr. Wick has himself in a helluva pickle. The high table of assassins has a huge bounty on him, spearheaded by the Marquis Vincent de Gramont (Bill Skarsgård) who has been given carte blanche to take down Wick however possible. Pretty much every assassin in the world (which, as near I can tell, is about half the population of the Earth) is on his tail and his allies are few and far between. With some advice from those allies, John puts together one last desperate plan for survival, using the archaic rules of the game against the table itself. But who cares about all of that? You want to know if the action delivers. Whoa boy. It seems like Stahelski saw the Raid movies, and said: challenge accepted. Chris, Wright, Drew, and Ben call out John Wick 4 for what it actually is and boy do they get excited doing it. Check out their review here.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. For the rest of his free time, he can be found biking, drinking craft beer, being an amateur photographer, and playing video games by himself or on Twitch. ANNE RICE’S MAYFAIR WITCHES SERIES REVIEW

The adaptations of Anne Rice continues in the AMC presentation of Mayfair Witches, the follow up to Interview with the Vampire in Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe. Rowan (Alexandra Daddario) is a neurosurgeon on bereavement after her adoptive mother passes away. In her grieving she will return to New Orleans in search of her biological mother who holds the figurative key to Rowan’s mysterious superpowers and the literal key to Rowans big-ass inherited New Orleans estate. An extravagance of wealth isn’t the only thing tied to the Mayfair name. Rowan also has a curse in the form of a suave supernatural servant named Lasher (Jack Huston) who’s been doing the Mayfair matriarchs bidding for over a century. The more things change however, the more they stay the same. A witch-watching group has kept their eyes on the Mayfairs and a special agent named Ciprien (Tongayi Chirisa) will team up with Rowan to help her discover the truth of her power before that power changes her. It’s a tale of murder, mystery, lore, and legacy in Anne Rice’s The Mayfair Witches. Bradly, Matt Foster, Kim, and Sarah brew a stew with eyes of newt and speculative discussion on how the witches fare after the vampire’s interview.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Matt Foster (Screener Squad)

Matt Foster is a stand up comic, podcaster, and movie critic currently living in the greater Salt Lake City area. His lifelong love of genre film began early, when he realized they freaked out his mom. He performs (epidemics permitting) regularly on Dungeons and Comedy, a DND live play with standup comedians, and is the slightly less mustache-y half of the Nighthawks Podcast, a cinema-centric discussion cohosted by Trevor T. Trujillo.

Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

Sarah Jane (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Sarah Jane was born and raised in Southern California but currently calls Austin, TX her home. She’s seen over 5,700 movies so far with zero plans on stopping. She has a penchant for all things exploitation, and she loves Godzilla with all her heart. Her favorite films are Deep Red, Le Samourai, and Miller’s Crossing. THE LAST OF US SERIES REVIEW

Neil Druckmann takes his blockbuster video game from the small screen to…the other part of the small screen. Pedro Pascal stars as Joel and Bella Ramsey stars as Ellie in a world ravaged by mutated cordyceps that turns anyone infected into a mindless zombie. The continental United States is a wasteland populated by the autocratic government agency FEDRA, the Fireflies–a group fighting FEDRA for better or worse, cannibals, escaped zoo animals, and people just trying to survive. Is this video game adaptation worth sticking with through to the end or would it be better to log off early? Listen to Matt, Wright, Kimberly, and Eliot to find out.
