RENFIELD MOVIE REVIEW

It’s been a long few centuries for poor Renfield (Nicholas Hoult). Sure, being Count Dracula’s (Nicolas Cage) assistant comes with perks: eternal youth and super-powers (dependant on bug consumption). But Drac ain’t exactly a good boss. And finding the innocent to bring to Dracula as food is starting to wear on him. When he ends up in a toxic relationships encounter group (trailing a potential victim) he ends up realizing that his relationship with Dracula is about as toxic as you can get and he wants out. Meanwhile, a powerful gang controls the city and the police force but not Officer Quincy (Awkwafina) who wants to take them and their arrogant but pretty incompetent number one son (Ben Schwartz) down. When Renfield steps in to help the officer using his badass action hero powers, he sees that he doesn’t want to be the bad guy anymore, but the two have their work cut out for them. Chris, Tessa, Frank, and Marco felt a bit drained after watching this, but that’s not to say it is bloodless. Listen to their review.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. Tessa Morrison (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Unstabletop Gamers)

Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. Wrote and contributed to website and magazine Strange Kids Club for five years reviewing films, video games, and Halloween candy. Co-hosted a Public Access show called Ladies of Fandom. DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES MOVIE REVIEW

It’s a harsh winter even for Neverwinter. You find yourself in a stone prison along with your roommate, a grizzled barbarian woman. You’re brought into a council room made up of a two person prison review board. As you work to persuade the board to your release, a third board member, an Aarakocra, walks into the room. And there’s a flimsy glass window nearby. Make an opposed strength check. Thus begins the new comedic fantasy adventure Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Based on the granddaddy of all roleplaying games, the film follows an adventuring party of bard Edgin Darvis (Chris Pine), barbarian Holga Kilgore (Michelle Rodriguez), sorcerer Simon Aumar (Justice Smith), and druid Doric (Sophia Lillis) along with the NPC paladin, Xenk Yendar (Regé-Jean Page). Together they attempt to combat the schemes of rogue Forge Fitzwilliam (Hugh Grant) and the underlying BBEG, Sofina (Daisy Head) and the red wizards of Thay as they try to destroy the world. You know, a typical D&D campaign. Our own murder hobos, Mindy, Harmoni, and Kim, discuss whether this film rolls a nat 20 on its saving throw, or deserves to be the target of Power Word: Kill. So whether you’re a full blown Critter, Intrepid Hero, or only bought your first set of dice after watching Stranger Things, grab your d20, and meet us at the tavern. There’s a dice goblin who wants to give us a review.

Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. They still give her money for being on HBO that one time, with her name in the credits spelled wrong. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. In the few seconds she gets to herself, Mindy bakes for charity, knits eccentric plushies, plays original RPG’s with her gamemaster husband, and spends time with her soulmate, Batman.

Harmoni Anderson (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Unstabletop Gaming)

Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Plus she can curse at us and not get fired….so bonus!

Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

PAINT MOVIE REVIEW

What if Bob Ross wasn’t who you thought he was? What if he was embroiled in some sort of seedy scandal? That’s the thought that led writer/director Brett McAdams to create Paint, the new IFC film starring Owen Wilson as Carl Nargle, a Bob Ross analog. Carl has hosted Burlington, Vermont’s number one local cable access painting show for nearly three decades. His status as a superstar of public broadcasting is challenged when the struggling TV station hires Ambrosia (Ciara Renée) a new rock star artist who is less interested in calming landscapes and more into edgy ideas, like, say, a UFO gushing blood onto a tree stump. Carl soon finds his whole canvas tipped upside down as Ambrosia takes his time slot, his colleagues, and the affection of the masses. But, to be clear, this is still all meant to feel like Bob Ross, so none of this ever rises to anything insane. It’s always as gentle as a watercolor painting. Melina, Frank, Ryan, and T.C. sit down to chat about this literal arthouse film in low, dulcet tones. And while they could mostly agree on the pleasantness of this soft spoken film, they didn’t all agree on its overall quality. One may have even found it as dull and as uninspired as the motel art a famous nice man with a paint brush, canvas, and white guy fro used to paint with joy.

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE REVIEW

It’s been 30 years since the critical and commercial failure of the Super Mario Bros movie. And because of that absolute bomb, Nintendo has been very, very reluctant to license one of its properties for any sort of adaptation, film or otherwise. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto was finally convinced that a Mario movie could not only be done again but done well when he met with Universal Parks to create Super Nintendo World for the Universal Studios theme parks. Through that connection, he met the founder of Illumination, and a conversation for a Mario movie began. But even with Miyamoto’s positive outlook, when the voice cast was announced, the internet had a different feeling about the impending doom that would be this movie. There’s no way. NO WAY it’ll be good. How could it?! The Minions, people? Chris Pratt voicing Mario? NO WAY! And yet, after all the whinging and whining, after literal decades in development, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has arrived. And it’s already scored $377 million, the biggest global debut in history for an animated film! With numbers like that , does it really matter what the critics think? Well, if you still need convincing, Wright, Chad, Spider Mike, and TC are hopping into the warp pipe and lovingly drink the member berry juice to discuss the story of the two legendary Brooklyn plumbers, Mario and Luigi, who find themselves transported to a far off world where the looming evil of Bowser, King of the Koopas, threatens the lives of Princess Peach Toadstool and her Mushroom Kingdom.

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. Michael Riojas (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal small ville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. AIR MOVIE REVIEW

While our whole crew came together in celebrating how fun Ben Affleck’s latest directing effort Air is as a movie, we fought pretty hard on whether or not it was a bit ‘ethically queasy’. You’ll have to listen to the review to get more on Alan, Chris, Ben, and Frank arguing over that. But the story concerns Matt Damon as Nike shoe executive Sonny Vaccaro. In 1984, they’re finishing dead last in basketball shoes, which is where the money apparently is/was. He makes a bold pitch to head of the company Phil Knight (Affleck): he suggests they put all their marketing money behind a single young up and coming player, Michael Jordan. Problem is, Jordan wants nothing to do with Nike, is openly an Adidas fan, and might be too expensive for their whole budget. Well, if you know anything about basketball shoes, you know what happens but Air tells its story in a highly entertaining fashion with a tight cast made up of Jason Bateman, Viola Davis, Chris Tucker, Chris Messina, Marlon Wayans, and more.

TETRIS MOVIE REVIEW

Lazy sunday, gonna pour myself a glass of red wine, crank up on the volume and blast Korobeiniki. What’s that? You say you’ve never heard that tune? What if I told you that not only have you heard that melody before but you could hum it in your sleep? Apple+ presents Tetris, the film that tells the creation and distribution of the timeless classic still going on strong to this day. Back in the 80’s at a gaming expo, a Dutch man living in Japan, Henk Rogers (Taron Egerton), purchases the rights to Tetris. Thus begins the first steps to obtaining the distribution rights to all of Tetris, with arcade, console, PC, and a top secret upcoming format known as handheld. That’s some fire-red information right there. Little to his knowledge, the Russian govt and KGB are locking the doors on distribution and promising a quick and easy vanishing to anyone who goes snooping around looking for Tetris. Alexey Pajitnov (Nikita Efremov) the creator of Tetris is torn between helping Henk flood the globe with 4 piece blocks or remaining alive behind the iron curtain. Bradly, Neal, Dogget, and Harmony put together their own let’s play and discuss their history with titular game and all things Nintendo. They even discuss a little Sega on the side. Is there room for a fun comedy about game development in a bureaucracy spy thriller? Save your quarters, this review is coming at you free of charge from one of us.

Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. STAR WARS – THE BAD BATCH S2 REVIEW

The Mandalorian may be a huge hit, but it’s not the best Disney Plus Star Wars show about Mandalorians who adopt a powerful child. That honor belongs to The Bad Batch, a spinoff of The Clone Wars animated series. Season 2 continues the story of Clone Force 99, an elite squad of troopers with beneficial genetic mutations, and their younger sister Omega, a rare female clone. For a show that’s supposedly aimed at a younger demographic, The Bad Batch packs a surprising amount of heavy themes, mature storylines, and darker moments in between the more lighthearted, adventure-of-the-week episodes. It’s the kind of show where your heroes don’t always win, bad things happen to good people, and not everyone makes it out alive. Listen to T.C., Doggett, and Marco give their review then stick around for the spoiler section where they discuss The Empire Strikes Back of Star Wars animation.

FURIES MOVIE REVIEW

In Greek mythology, the Furies were a trio of very powerful and angry goddesses who punished men who did bad things, particularly to women. They were a force of justice, but also a force to be reckoned with. So, it is a well chosen title for the newest Netflix female driven revenge action flick directed by and starring Veronica Ngo (The Princess; The Guard). Bee (Dong Anh Quynh) is a young woman who has been living on the streets of Saigon since the brutal murder of her mother many years ago. One night, as she is being attacked by a group of men, she is rescued by Thanh (Toc Tien), who brings her into a small operation led by a mysterious woman who trains her trio of Furies to take revenge on a criminal gang who abuse, rape, and traffic females. The three lady warriors risk everything to challenge this corrupt empire. As a disclaimer right up front, this opens with a graphic assault, rape, and murder. Please be aware of that as you go into this movie. Mindy, Ben, and T.C. discuss the well crafted action, the less than well crafted script, and the sometimes difficult to swallow logic that will either win over an audience of action junkies or entirely turn off viewers looking for something slightly deeper than a playthrough of a very good looking video game.
