DEAD RINGERS SERIES REVIEW

Which statement makes you more uneasy? “My gynecologist called and they want me to come in” or “David Cronenberg is filming a new body horror character study”. What if I told you that those two statements are one and the same in the amazon Cronenberg remake mini series Dead Ringers. Elliot and Beverly Mantle (Both characters portrayed by Rachel Weisz) are twin gynecologists both with aspirations of opening and running their own birthing centre for women by women. In order to do so they need the money of wealthy pharmaceutical philanthropist Rebecca (Jennifer Ehle). They’ll have to wine, dine, and put up with her and her brood of apathetic vulture family members to make their dreams come true. It’s not all work and no play. Beverly has a fondness for a patient who also happens to be an on the rise actress Genevieve (Britne Oldford). Beverly, who is the more reserved and shy twin, asks Elliot to seduce Genevieve on her behalf which Eliot is happy to oblige. Genevieve is then pulled into the toxic codependency of the Mantle sisters. With career and romance on the line, which twin will reign supreme and have it all? Bradly, Jordan, Rae, and Eliot discuss their relationship with the original film, the success of this adaptation, and the necessity of Amazon’s wonderful use of trigger warnings.

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL.3 MOVIE REVIEW

The Guardians return, but it’s been awhile since their last caper (unless you count the Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special). Dynamics have changed in the group; they’re less constantly sniping at each other and more like best friends these days. They’ve made their home the makeshift planet of Knowhere (out of the head of a dead god). But Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) is not doing so good. Knowing Gamora (Zoe Saldaña) is out there somewhere but no longer is the same Gamora whom he had a relationship with, has been driving him to drink…a lot. But he is broken out of his downward spiral when a golden-skinned being (Will Poulter) crashes into their complacency and is narrowly run-off in defeat, but not before he causes serious damage to his target, Rocket (Sean Gunn and Bradley Cooper). Discovering that something about his creation involved a doohickey that will kill him if traditional methods are employed to save his life, the team must gather their resources to discover Rocket’s origin and defeat the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji) who is very protective of his IP…which is to say, Rocket. Along the way a very annoyed Gamora will have to work with them along with other old friends. Chris, Wright, and Marco give their reviews and refuse to admit whether or not they may have cried a little bit.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). SUZUME MOVIE REVIEW

Following up the international success of his 2019 films Weathering with You and the 2018 anime classic Your Name, writer/director Makoto Shinkai is bringing back the magic and beauty of Japan’s ancient culture with Suzume. The title is the name of an adventurous teenage girl brought up by her reserved and cautious aunt Tamaki. Suzume sees a giant worm from legend floating in the sky and being pursued by a mysterious boy named Souta. She follows the two to a door that seems to go nowhere. Souta explains that his family for generations has been “closers” and keep catastrophes at bay by closing doors that lead to the great beyond. When worms escape from the other side, they curl up into a big spiral above Japan and free fall to earth causing massive devastation, like the Tokyo-Yokohama earthquake of 1923. Suzume agrees to accompany Souta on his quest to close the doors but they hit a stumbling block when a talking cat named Daijin turns Souta into a three legged chair. Not allowing such a minor setback like losing his human form get in the way of his family duty and obligation, Souta chases the cat and continues his mission with Suzume in tow, who has a bit of a crush on the boy. Meanwhile, aunt Tamaki takes a road trip to find her missing niece and heal the wounds of the past. Bradly, Lewayne, Frank, and Melina discuss the gorgeously animated world, share some profound thoughts about Suzume’s journey, and remark on how relevant cats are on the internet.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

QUASI MOVIE REVIEW

Oh boy, Broken Lizard is back, emphasis on the “broken” with Hulu’s new movie Quasi, starring said comedy troupe. Depending on who you talk to, it’s literally the most disappointing film ever, or just average. It seems Broken Lizard is stuck in a time warp, where the comedy really hasn’t evolved with them. Jokes are overdone or very low hanging. Plus, this really has nothing to do with The Hunchback of Notre Dame but mixes a whole hell of a lot of French history, and not for the better. You know a movie is bad when they show the “outtakes” at the end and the only thing that’s remotely funny is an a horse taking a shit in the background. It’s really to watch hard everyone… Rae, Neil, and Chad just can’t figure out why this movie is what it is.

GHOSTED MOVIE REVIEW

If you only watched the first 30 minutes of this new romantic Apple+ film starring Ana De Armas and Chris Evans, you might think you’re watching a Lifetime movie. Evans plays Cole, an unlucky-in-love farmer and agricultural historian who has recently been dumped when he crosses paths with Sadie (De Armas), a girl from the big city trying to escape her hectic life. They meet at a farmer’s market and hit it off after a charming bit of flirt-fighting. They go for a coffee that turns into going for dinner that turns into walking the riverside and chatting about life and love, which ends with the sun rising as they reach Sadie’s front door. They kiss. She invites him in. They spend the night together, and Cole tells his family that he has in fact found “The One”. But then, she ghosts him, and he’s left wondering what went wrong. If you watched up to that point, you’d be able to use the same paint-by-numbers guide Lifetime uses to write all their romantic movies. Ah, but here’s the twist. This isn’t one of those lame movies. No, no, no. Sadie has a secret, and Cole soon uncovers it when he tracks her down to London and is kidnapped by a torturer who believes he has vital information. Sadie arrives and proceeds to beat the holy hell out of the men holding her stalker love interest hostage. Sadie is in fact CIA. With her ass kicking talents and his bumbling yet handsome tomfoolery, they team up to fight and flee their way on an international adventure to save the world, with bantering and explosions along the way. And with banter of their own, Bradly, Neil, Chad, and T.C. crack the code of the action adventure rom-com.

He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. KIDS VS ALIENS MOVIE REVIEW

With a title like this, you’d make assumptions. You’d assume there are kids in this movie. Correct. You’d guess there are aliens. Well, eventually. And by the look of it, you might assume an 80’s vibe. Yeah, that stylistic choice is certainly there, though it’s set in 2023. What you might not be able to tell is who this movie is aimed at. Who is the target audience? That’s exactly the question Lewayne, Bradly, Chad, and TC had while discussing this schlocky B-movie from the producer of the extraordinary Turbo Kid and the director of the wild ride of Hobo With A Shotgun. Does Kids vs. Aliens belong in the same league as those other two films? The Squad has thoughts about that. Searching for a place to host a Halloween party, teenagers Billy, Dallas, and Trish bully young friends Gary, Jack, and Miles while the kids film a homemade fantasy movie with Gary’s older sister Samantha in a barn. Billy only stops harassing the boys when he seemingly takes an interest in Sam, who becomes enamored with Billy, though it’s quite clear he’s got his eyes set on Sam and Gary’s mansion for his spooky teen rager. After the duo’s rich parents leave the siblings home alone to go on a trip, Billy shows up with his party and proceeds to trash the place. Oh, right, and aliens show up and start killing everyone with goo, fulfilling the promise made in the versus title.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and Eye on the prize and maybe even provide some comments of his own.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

BEEF SERIES REVIEW

BEEF is what you get when you can’t just let some petty shit go. You know what I’m talking about… that one time you were dissed in front of your paramour or when your boss (the one that hates your guts), yells at you in front of your peers. Sure, maybe replacing their shampoo with hair remover seems harmless… But when is revenge truly won, and in the end is it worth it? Well strap in kids, because Steven Yeun and Ali Wong are going to take this beef further than any of them ever imagined. And it’s not just their own lives that are being disrupted. Each and every time they think they’ve won, it opens another thread or lie that affects their loved ones. With performances that can only be described as “holy shit,” the entire cast serves a purpose beyond Danny (Yeun) and Amy’s (Wong) Beef. This story is sad, but the comedy in between the sadness is why you stay until the end. Join Sarah Jane, Kim, and Chad as they gush about one of 2023’s best shows.

STAR TREK: PICARD SEASON 3 REVIEW

After two uneven seasons, the third and final installment of Star Trek: Picard moves the story forward by going back to where it all began — Star Trek: The Next Generation — and everyone’s here! Well, everyone except Tasha and Dr. Pulaski and O’Brien and Guinan and Wesley (although those last two showed up in S2) but you get my point. This is the Trek equivalent of your favorite lineup of your favorite band getting back together for a farewell tour with some surprise musical guests showing up. Once again, Jean Luc Picard is trying to enjoy his retirement when he receives an encrypted distress call from his old friend, Dr. Beverly Crusher. Beverly and her son Jack (yes, Beverly had *another* son) are being hunted by a fearsome adversary for reasons unknown and Jean Luc is the only person she can trust. To save the Crushers, Jean Luc will have to get the band back together, but that’s easier said than done. Season 3 can’t just coast on nostalgia and good will. It also needs to tell a compelling story while acknowledging how these characters have changed in the decades since they last served aboard the Enterprise. If this is truly the last time we’ll ever see the TNG cast on screen, then this season has to be good. Was the mission successful or did the show get sucked into the black hole of lazy fan service?
