THE MUPPETS MAYHEM SERIES REVIEW

It’s time to play the music. It’s time to light the lights. It’s time to meet the rock band that debuted back in 1975 on a sketch comedy show called The Muppet Show. After the series finale of The Muppet Show back in 1981, Doctor Teeth and the Electric Mayhem went on tour and have never stopped rocking all around the world. Dr. Gerald Teeth Jr (Bill Barretta) the lead singer and keyboardist, Animal (Eric Jacobson) on the drums, Floyd Pepper (Matt Vogel) slap’n the bass while providing backup vocals, Janice (David Rudman) wailing on the guitar, Zoot (Dave Goelz) breathing fire into the brass belly of a saxophone, and Lips (Peter Linz) on the trumpet. Over 4 decades of playing together without a single album to show for it. Nora Singh (Lilly Singh) is a driven music exec who persuades the band to stop the party bus and put those notes to vinyl. She believes the band has a platinum record in them and for the record she’s not alone in her quest. Her social media influencer sister Hannah (Saara Chaudry) and number one super fan Moog (Tahj Mowry) will team up to spread the love, joy, laughter, and wisdom of The Muppets. Bradly gathers a choir of felt fanatics in Dogget, Tessa, and Rae, to compose a critical orchestra of thought provoking laughter. They’ll discuss whether or not yet another attempt at rebooting the Muppets is worth it, if the musical stylings of the almost half century old band can still inspire, and if cameos are even noticeable when going toe to toe with Muppets.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. Hey persons, it’s your favorite canine Dogget! As many of you know, I don’t identify as a critic as much as a classy shock jock. That being said, I do my best to give all of you a well-balanced review filled with my true opinions and hopefully a few laughs. Tessa Morrison (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Unstabletop Gamers)

Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. Wrote and contributed to website and magazine Strange Kids Club for five years reviewing films, video games, and Halloween candy. Co-hosted a Public Access show called Ladies of Fandom. Previously guested on podcasts Blood Over Texas, Threequel Club, Trash in the Can, Retro Movie Roundtable, and Nerds with Mics.

SANCTUARY MOVIE REVIEW

Christopher Abbott and Margaret Qualley star in the new film, Sanctuary, directed by Zachary Wigon following the director’s 2014 romantic drama The Heart Machine. Abbott plays Hal, the next young CEO getting ready to take over his late father’s hotel empire while Qualley plays Rebecca, Hal’s dominatrix who has been preparing him all along for his success and now that it’s here, isn’t ready to let him end the relationship. This isn’t the typical sub/dom story usually portrayed in cinema, but rather a fascinating two-hander that plays on social dynamics in the workplace and a commentary on the sub/dom culture. Wright, Frank, and Alan discuss everything from the film’s tone, acting, direction, and its final frame. Is Sanctuary a safe bet of a flick? Listen and play their game!

STAR WARS: VISIONS VOLUME 2 REVIEW

Star Wars is back with a second season of Visions, the Disney Plus 2021 animated short series that featured the visions of several animators across the globe. The nine animation studios put to task this time are El Guiri, Cartoon Saloon, Punkrobot, Aardman, Studio Mir, Studio La Cachette, 88 Pictures, D’Art Shtajio with Lucasfilm, and Triggerfish. You’ll see vagabond Sith lords duel their former masters and orphans promised freedom and power by the hands stained with the blood of their enemies. Watch sisters rebel against the shadows of an empire and not quite pod racing on Tatooine. Jedi in doubt battle against a sexy Sith with gorgeous anime hair and Imperial troopers take a load off and enjoy the premier dancing of spies. Force sensitive siblings cast aside the shackles of want for the needs of those without hope and a giant hole in the ground contains something much darker than a Sarlacc. Finally there’s an adorable little alien child with a voice that could inspire the heroes of tomorrow. Bradly, who is recognized by Dogget, Tessa, and Melina (but has not been given the rank of master) leads an Imperial march on behalf of the Mickey Mouse Club to praise the successes of this experiment and shame the failures of it. Together they discuss what shorts they would like to see continued, what stories should be cast to the side, and what merchandising would do gangbusters around Christmas time.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

MASTER GARDENER MOVIE REVIEW

Joel Edgerton plays Narvel Roth, the titular gardener of this new Paul Schrader directed film. He tends to the palatial estate of wealthy widow Mrs. Haverhill (Sigourney Weaver). But his very structured life is upended when she orders him to take her great-niece Maya (Quintessa Swindell) on as an apprentice. Narvel is a tightly closed book for good reason; his background is one of violence and disturbing behavior and when he finds himself wanting to open that book to protect Maya, things get complicated. This is another character driven piece from Schrader about one of his “God’s Lonely Men” as he puts it, that delivers in that regard, but leaves one wanting more on the plot side. Don’t get us wrong, Master Gardener is a good movie. The look, set decoration, casting, acting, etc… all of it is there. It’s just these fleshed out characters don’t have any motivation to move forward, the plot just does it for them. It’s not lazy or anything, it just feels empty at some parts, especially when you get to the 3rd act. That all being said, Master Gardener has great performances from Joel Edgerton, Sigourney Weaver, and Quintessa Swindell. They all shine and define the story. Need more convincing? Why don’t you sit back and kick it in the garden today with Jordan, Lewayne, Frank, and Chad. We’re more than gracious hosts.

Chad Halvorsen (Screener Squad)

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

FAST X MOVIE REVIEW

The crew revs up their reviewing engines to take on the tenth (well, eleventh if you count Hobbs & Shaw) installment in the Fast and the Furious franchise. This one is splitting the tenth film into three installments so get ready for cliffhangers. But it’s still well over two hours of the kind of car and action mayhem you’ve come to either enjoy or disparage, depending on what your feelings are about this franchise. This time, Dom finds himself being warned by his old enemy Cipher (Charlize Theron) that an unstoppable badass is coming after him with a thirst for revenge. Thanks to a re-edit of scenes from Fast Five in the beginning, we see that Hernan Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida) who they killed then, had a son named Dante (Jason Momoa) and was there the whole time. Now, he seeks not to just kill Dom but to make him suffer as he takes away from him the people who he loves (which is a steadily growing list of ‘family’). Everybody comes back for this WAY over the top ride and there are mixed feelings from Chris, Wright, Alan, Ben, and special guest Nathan about how much they feel it works (but Wright is insanely wrong). Push your pedal to the metal to check out their review, which is, like this film, kinda longer than usual, but they had a lot to talk about.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT? MOVIE REVIEW

Love, true love, is what brings us critics here today to talk about a movie about marriage. Marriage, that blessed arrangement, that dream within a dream. Director Shekhar Kapur and writer Jemima Khan present a romantic comedy that looks at the arrangement of marriage and asks What’s Love got to do with it. Zoe Stevenson (Lily James) is a single woman on the rise as a proclaimed documentarian film maker. Her childhood friend Kazim (Shazad Latif) feels it’s about time he settled down and takes a beautiful bride of his own. In doing so he will honour his Pakistani heritage and honour his Muslim faith. Kazim and his parents have set up an appointment with Mo the Matchmaker (Asim Chaudhry) to assist in the arrangement of marriage. Zoe, who is repulsed but intrigued by the process of assisted marriage, asks her friend Kazim to allow her to film it all in a documentary to which he reluctantly agrees. Throughout her artistic process she reflects on how love, commitment, romance, and happily ever after truly is in contrast with faith, culture, and parental pressures. Bradly, Melina, and Harmoni knit pick forget me nots and discuss Emma Thompson’s drunk mom cameo, throw out some relationship advice of their own, then discuss if the romance and the comedy gel in What’s Love got to do with it.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Harmoni Anderson (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Unstabletop Gaming)

Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Plus she can curse at us and not get fired….so bonus!

FOOL’S PARADISE MOVIE REVIEW

Charlie Day, from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fame, has finally made his directorial debut with Fool’s Paradise. We follow the mute Latte Pronto, also played by Day, who finds himself a part of the Hollywood machine as a dead ringer for a blowhard actor in the next big picture. He’s recruited by Ray Liotta’s character, The Producer, as initially the lead’s stand-in, but ultimately becomes the star of the big blockbuster. One thing leads to another and Pronto becomes the next Hollywood success with the spastic help of his publicist Lenny, played by Ken Jeong. There are ups and then downs for poor Pronto who ends up finding that the world will chew him up and spit him out as soon as it gets the chance. Wright, Spider-Mike, Lewayne, and TC discuss everything that worked and everything that didn’t and unlike the star of this film, they have a lot to say.

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal small ville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. He lives in Austin with his beloved Dachshund-Maltese and trusted sidekick, Dean. He can also be heard on RageSelect. He can be found on Twitter and Instagram.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

T.C. De Witt (Screener Squad)

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. He has released two feature films, The Princess Knight and A Christmas Sunset. He thrives on collaboration and the thrill of sharing stories in all forms.

Are you there, God? It’s me, OneofUs. I’m watching a movie today. I’m so scared, God. I’ve never had a film adaptation of the book Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret before. Suppose Judy Blume’s beloved masterpiece about adolescence and personal discovery is reduced down to just a film about getting periods and bras? Suppose the audience decides to ban the movie as it has the book (so many times) because of how it critically analyzes the need for religion? Please help Frank, Harmoni, and Melina give their honest and heartfelt review of this Abby Ryder Fortson and Rachel McAdams starring movie, God. Don’t let this film adaptation be too horrible. RABBIT HOLE SERIES REVIEW

Did you know that what you put on the internet can be accessed by anyone anytime anywhere? It’s not called the room wide web. It’s the World baby! Paramount + presents Cats vs Dogs creators Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s new show, Rabbit Hole. This corporate espionage thriller follows John Weir (Kiefer Sutherland) and his childhood best friend Valence (Jason Butler Harner) who work together at a consulting firm. After a successful day on the job and a one night stand with Hailey (Meta Golding) a gorgeous gal he picks up at the local bar, John awakens to find himself in the middle of a conspiracy and wanted for the murder of Edward Homm (Rob Yang). From his own work to his father’s before him, John’s past collides with his future involving a spiders web of data mining, algorithms, and a global conspiracy that could undermine and control the freedoms of every living person on the planet. It’s up to John, Hailey, Dad, and a team he can trust to take down a shadow group that may or may not exist at all. Bradly, Jordan, and Sarah Jane discuss their favourite players in the espionage ensemble, the serious subject of the loss of checks and balances mixed with a dash of angry british comedy, and close with a discussion on the relevance of a show about data being sold to the highest bidder in a post patriot act and social networking society.

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).
