GREAT EXPECTATIONS SERIES REVIEW

The 1988 film Scrooged is about a TV executive putting on a live TV broadcast of the classic novel, A Christmas Carol. In the beginning rehearsals for this production, the aforementioned executive is confronted by a censor who tells him that the dancer costumes are indecent. In his defense, he replies, “I want to see her nipples!” “But this is a Christmas show!” “Well, Charles Dickens woulda wanted to see her nipples then.” It is this sort of mentality that seems to have been carried into the joint FX – BBC miniseries of another of Charles Dickens’ classics, Great Expectations. Executive produced in part by Tom Hardy and Ridley Scott, Fionn Whitehead stars as Pip, a poor Englishman who dreams of the money to create a better life for himself, and the disillusioning journey that follows once that money is thrust into his grasp. Said journey which involves opium pipes, BDSM, and hiding bodies, apparently. I must have missed that chapter. INFLUENCER MOVIE REVIEW

So let’s get it out of the way; being an influencer is a double edged sword when it comes to making a living. On one hand, you’re paid by viewers and advertisers to basically be a proxy for the audience, living the life we all would enjoy if we had a disposable income and no real responsibilities. A lot of times in horror, influencers are used as easy fodder for whatever lurks in the shadows, because the other end of that sword is all this exposure makes you an easy target for all sorts of things. Online hate, trolls, and maybe the occasional psychopath who just wants to gain your trust and leave you for dead on a deserted island in the Thailand. The latter happens in the new Shudder release, Influencer. It’s not horrific or overly grotesque, but it is a good mind fuck, a nice thriller that has a lot more to say than “influencers are stupid.” Join Jordan, Lewayne, and Chad, as they convince Ryan that he’s not as big of a dick bag as the “Ryan” in this movie.

He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

SUCCESSION SEASON 4 REVIEW

Last season on Succession, big bad CO of Waystar RoyCo Logan Roy (Brian Cox) reins supreme and has laid the smack down on his children. If you come after the king, you better be prepared to ravage the land, salt the earth, and drag the bodies of your enemies behind a chariot Achilles-style. Now with the final season of the series, Logan makes moves to secure his legacy and establish himself as the best billionaire media mogul of all time before his time runs out. Colin Roy (Alan Ruck) abandons the bachelor life and plans his wedding in hopes that his siblings and father can set aside their feud to celebrate the happiest day of his life with him. Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) is torn between securing his birthright and sabotaging his father’s empire with underhanded dealings with tech billionaire and all around hottie Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård). Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook) is playing for Matsson’s team on the down-low like a boss, being told her seat in power there is guaranteed, but the systemic misogyny and power structures of the sexist corporate world continue to trip up her ambitions. Roman Roy (Kieran Culkin), finally feeling the respect from daddy dearest, attempts to leave the carefree mischievous time bomb life behind and step into the wingtips of a winner, but can a zebra change his stripes and delete his NSFW texts in time for a merger? Also the dynamic duo of Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) and Greg (Nicholas Braun) get up to some election night shenanigans involving wasabi and La Croix. Bradly holds a very important business meeting with lots of numbers and graphs with Sarah Jane, and Drew. They discuss the overall stock of Succession, how it could impact serious HBO (or, well, MAX) dramas in the future, and how sometimes you gotta watch terrible people be the worst in order to feel like a great human being.

THE BOOGEYMAN MOVIE REVIEW

So, there are a LOT of movies and shorts that have gone by the title “The Boogeyman” or at least have “Boogeyman” in the title. It’s gotta be one of the dumbest sounding words for one of the most ubiquitous descriptors of the thing that hides in the night, in the closet, or under the bed. But THIS new film is an adaptation of the Stephen King story originally published all the way back in 1973. And guess what: it’s not what one would call a terribly accurate adaptation, but that story is often credited as one of King’s scariest, so here we go. Sophie Thatcher is the older daughter Sadie to psychologist Will Harper (Chris Messina). The family is not doing great recovering from the recent sudden death of the mom. When a terrified man shows up to Will’s home office asking for help, as he believes his children were all killed by a mysterious light-hating creature, Will goes to call for help, believing the man to be deeply unstable and perhaps responsible for his own children’s deaths. Before you know it, guy is dead in the house and the creature stalking him has latched onto Will’s family. Sadie, of course, leads the charge of figuring out what this thing is and how to stop it before it can take her little sister. Chris leads the charge with Alan and Wright of figuring out why they just didn’t call this Lights Out 2.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE MOVIE REVIEW

I’m going to start by telling you something that the studios really dropped the ball on making extremely clear about Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse: it’s part one of two and ends on a huge cliffhanger. Now you can just enjoy this sequel to Into The Spider-Verse as it deserves to be enjoyed without that ARGH moment at the end. The story follows Miles and Gwen, reuniting again in Miles’ universe, only Gwen really isn’t supposed to be canoodling with him. She’s joined up with a cross-universal Spider-people organization that protects the integrity of the universes they’re all from, led by a gruff Spider-Man 2099, Miguel O’Hara (Oscar Isaac). And for reasons…they don’t want Miles getting involved. Naturally, he’s going to anyway, so lots of universe-hopping, tons of new spider-variations, and pure delight follows. And not just for the Spidey-fans out there, but anyone who loves truly experimental and ballsy animation, because this film takes what the first one did with it, and takes its foot off the brakes entirely. Chris, Alan, Ben, and Spider-Mike talk rather excitedly about this one, as pretty much anyone who has seen it is doing right now.

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal small ville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. WRATH OF BECKY MOVIE REVIEW

Becky was a 2020 revenge thriller that asked, “What would Rambo be like if he were a 13-year-old girl?” Lulu Wilson starred as the titular Becky, an angsty girl who has lost her mother to cancer and must defend her family against a group of escaped Neo Nazi convicts led by Kevin James. Sadly, this bloody flick came and went in the height of the pandemic and went largely unnoticed. But like any good revenge story, there’s always more vengeance to be had. 3 years later, we pick up with the eponymous lead in The Wrath of Becky, written and directed by Suzanne Coote and Matt Angel. After escaping the violent attack on her family, Becky, now 16, is on her own with dog Diego and living with a kind elderly woman named Elena. Becky just wants to be left alone, but in the meantime, she is perfecting her combat skills for the day she’s allowed to unleash her bloodlust once again. She is given that glorious opportunity when three members of the American terrorist incel organization the Proud Boys MAGA movement, lead by Darryl (Sean William Scott), cross paths with our wonderful psychopath and give her a damn good reason to go full-Becky once more. Neil, Lewayne, Chad, and T.C. offer up their thoughts on both Becky films and also cap off the review by fan casting the next comedian to play the bearded Neo Nazi leader in Becky’s next righteous killing spree.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Chad Halvorsen (Screener Squad)

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. Chad is a frequent podcaster, most notably posing as a co-host for the podcast “The Film Illogical Society.”

ROBOTS MOVIE REVIEW

In an almost Idiocracy “We’re doomed” not-too-distant future, the “big, beautiful” border wall has been completed, and 11 million people have been sent to the other side, leaving a massive non-complaining, non-raping workers hole to fill (the movie’s pointed satirical words, not ours). Tesla has advanced robotics technology to enable humanity to utilize lifelike androids as servants and manual laborers,. But before you go and assume, based on that setup, that this is some scathing and deserving mockery of a certain racist political party, it’s really just a rom-com. Affluent suburbanites Elaine (Shailene Woodley) and Charles (Jack Whitehall) use android doubles of themselves to avoid the time constraints of dating. But when their synthetic doubles realize that they are falling in love, the droids steal the identities of their self-absorbed owners and go on the run, forcing Elaine and Charles to team up and get their lives back. T.C. is joined by two Mikes from different manufacturers to discuss the romantic comedy tropes of this film and whether or not it leaned far enough into its premise.

He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). Michael Riojas (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal small ville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 322: THE EYE OF THE WRIGHTGER

Wright and Chris review some of the weirder home releases this week, from Batman as told by H.P. Lovecraft to a Hong Kong “Fighting on the Bus With My Brother”. From a Jeff Daniels movie that seems to have slid in from a parallel universe, to punching Wright four times in the face with some classics he should have seen by now. Oh, and a repeat review but of one both John and Wright liked, so what the hell.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). STILL: A MICHAEL J. FOX MOVIE REVIEW

Michael J. Fox was just a short kid from Canada with a dream of being an actor. When he turned 18, he drove to Hollywood and started chasing that dream, barely making ends meet until the stars aligned, and in 1982, he landed the career making role of Alex P. Keaton on the popular sitcom Family Ties. After winning the hearts of TV watchers, three years later, he became one of the most iconic film characters of all time by teaming up with Doc Brown, hopping in a Delorean, and traveling through time and into the hearts of millions in Back to the Future. Practically overnight, Michael became the biggest star in the world. And then, in 1991, at the age of 29, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, the progressive neurological disorder that he has become a champion for. But this isn’t a story about a man suffering. This is the story of what happens when an incurable optimist is forced to confront an incurable disease. As the documentary says: “The sad sack story is: Michael J. Fox gets this debilitating disease, and it crushes him. But to that, Michael says, “Yeah, that’s boring.” T.C., Melina, Neil, and Ryan discuss Fox’s inspiring story.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Neil Anderson (Screener Squad)

I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.

Ryan Aleck Hill (Screener Squad, Video and Audio editor)

Ryan is a Washington D.C. based filmmaker & video editor who loves watching and talking about movies more than just about anything. He currently works at a creative agency as a director of photography/video editor, and does freelance video editing for Anthony Fantano/TheNeedleDrop. He also has a YouTube channel (Downhill Media) where he works on a weirdo art explainer series called “Artsplained” with his partner Michelle. He was a part of the Spill.com community way back in the day, where he was cursed with an obsession for movies. In an effort to break the curse, he shows up on the Screener Squad podcast every once in a while and edits for One Of Us. Chris Cox claims that this is the only way it can be broken.
