GRAN TURISMO MOVIE REVIEW

What gamer hasn’t had a fantasy that they got to live their games for real? Even you apocalyptic gamers; I see you imagining how fun the end of the world would be. And yet, these are just fantasies. But not for young Jann (Archie Madekwe) who was SO good at the exacting racing simulator game Gran Turismo that he was selected by Sony and Nissan along with a handful of other champions, to compete to become an actual pro racer. Yes, this actually happened. A few times. Not exactly how this new movie portrays it, of course. Director Neill Blomkamp brings the zoom to this admittedly adrenaline-packed film (when they’re in the cars anyway). David Harbor is the gruff old racer who becomes a surrogate father-figure to Jann as he trains him. Djimon Hounsou is Jann’s actual father who just can’t understand what he loves so much about playing the game. Orlando Bloom is…largely irrelevant. Chris, Marco, and Spider-Mike found this to be an overly trope-laden underdog sports story with some real groan-worthy moments, but some solid performances from Harbor and Hounsou and some racing cinematography that is about as good as anyone’s ever done it. Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. RED, WHITE & ROYAL BLUE MOVIE REVIEW

Romantic comedies tend to have a pretty pat formula. They epitomize lighthearted love stories filled with charming predictability. These films thrive on familiar tropes—meet-cutes, quirky protagonists, and inevitable misunderstandings that tear the lovers apart. There are comedic sidekicks or best friends who provide comic relief and sage advice. There is the “almost-kiss” and often a deceptive secret. A grand romantic gesture culminates in a joyous reunion. Iconic settings like coffee shops and bustling cities or a race through the airport create a cozy atmosphere. You’re sure to have witty banter, a formulaic journey of self-discovery, and a happily-ever-after finale. Yep, it’s a tried and true formula for a genre. And if you love lovely love films about love, rom-coms give you escapism, hope, and a comforting reminder that love conquers all. With Red, White, and Royal Blue, you can pretty much set your watch to the tropes. Based on the Casey McQuiston Novel of the same name, this story focuses on Alex Claremont-Diaz, the First Son of the president of the United States and his rivalry with the young prince, Henry. After causing a major uproar at the older Prince’s brother’s wedding, the two are forced to avoid a national incident by up-playing their non-existent friendship with a goodwill visit to the UK. Their rivalry soon turns into a forced friendship and then blossoms into something even more. The two try to keep their relationship a secret despite their highly public lives amid his mother’s re-election campaign as the first female President. Melina, Lewayne, and T.C. fill out their ballots for this film and decide whether or not it’ll be voted into the rom-com Hall of Fame.

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

BLUE BEETLE MOVIE REVIEW

DC has obviously been going through some changes of late with their filmed content and Blue Beetle may, or may not be, the first in the new DCU. Honestly, it’s really just a stand alone, which is probably for the best as it really lets what works about it shine: the Reyes family. Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) is a recent college grad who ends up in possession of an alien artifact in the shape of a blue scarab when the rebellious daughter of a powerful family (Bruna Marquezine) sends him off with it to keep it hidden. Unfortunately or fortunately for Jaime, the Scarab ‘chooses’ him and burrows into his flesh permanently giving him the power to create a suit of armor with multiple powerful abilities and a guiding AI voice. But the powerful family led by Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon) wants it back and doesn’t care who they have to hurt to get it, including Jamie’s family. And it’s in the family that Blue Beetle shines and in the film’s sincere immersion in latino culture. It’s not exactly reinventing the wheel when it comes to superhero movies, but the Reyes family gives it a lot of heart and laughs. Listen to Chris, Marco, Spider-Mike, and Nathan discuss.

STRAYS MOVIE REVIEW

Tired of rewatching Barbie and Oppenheimer for the 16th time? Well, you’re in luck! Strays is the new film directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) which tells the story of Reggie the dog, voiced by Will Ferrell. Reggie is a happy-go-lucky pup that loves his human played by Will Forte. Forte’s Doug is a terrible wreck of a human being whose life falls apart due to Reggie just trying to be a good boy. Enough is enough and Doug abandons Reggie in the big city where he’s saved by Bug (Jamie Foxx). As Bug teaches Reggie the way of the streets they befriend other lovable mutts, Hunter (Randall Park) and Maggie (Isla Fisher). Reggie is having the time of his life but then discovers that maybe Doug didn’t want him after all. Reggie and his pals band together on a wild and naughty adventure to seek vengeance on Doug. Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. DREAMIN’ WILD MOVIE REVIEW

Back in 1979, Don Senior (Beau Bridges) built a state of the art $100,000 recording studio for his two teenage sons Donnie (Noah Jupe) and Joe Emerson (Jack Dylan Grazer). The two brothers self recorded and self produced their first album “Dreamin’ Wild”. Don Sr. and Joe see the heart and soul of their unique sound beats in the heart of young Donnie and he’s ready to take on the fame and claim his fortune with a pick and six strings. Alas, the biggest of stages can be a cruel and cold place. Director/writer Bill Pohlad tells the story of this young duo rediscovered over 30 years later by Matt Sullivan (Chris Messina) who has a passion for restoring old underappreciated records. Adult Donnie (Casey Affleck) and Joe Emerson (Walton Goggins) are asked to get the band back together and gather an audience with the unique electric soulful sound by touring the state and playing the big gigs and venues they’ve always dreamed of. Joe is happy to step away from his woodworking career and have fun reconnecting with his brother while Donnie, who never gave up singing gigs and looking for his moment, isn’t certain he wants to dive back into his old work. With fellow musician and wife Nancy (Zooey Deschanel) Donnie will have to navigate his old life without holding on to his old baggage if he’s to discover what made that first album so special. Bradly, Frank, and Melina would put a record on and discuss the film but alas, none of them have invested in vinyl. They do however dig deep into their artistic hearts and get vulnerable about music, film, and family.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. You can hear him leading and listening to his favorite critics on the Screener Squad and Eye on the prize and maybe even provide some comments of his own.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

APORIA MOVIE REVIEW

When Marty McFly returned to his home at the end of Back to the Future, he found that his actions in the past had a ripple effect on the timeline. He still lived in his house, but it was nice now. His brother and sister were still there, but they had real jobs. Biff was a loser (and his dad’s slave?). And his parents were now cool and in love. Only he retained the memories of the timeline that once was. Was this okay, because it all worked out so well for Marty? What were the other unintended consequences of his meddling with time? Aporia presents that moral quandary in a much quieter and complex way. What if you could change the past by flicking a switch? What if that simple action would erase the person who ruined your life from existence? If it meant bringing a loved one back to your reality, regardless of the ripple on the world, would you kill someone with a press of a button? Sophie (Judy Greer), has struggled to manage grief, a full-time job, and parenting her devastated daughter Riley, but when a friend reveals a secret time-bending machine, Sophie is faced with an impossible choice. Jordan, Frank, Lewayne, and T.C. hop in the One Of Us Wayback Machine to discuss the complexities of paradoxical time travel, praise the quietude of this indie film, and decide where to aim their own time gun.

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox.

Eric is a multi-award show watching, sometimes comedian, sometimes writer that began life as a Muppet and 1930’s screwball comedy obsessed goon and continues to carry a torch for all things felt and funny. In the not-too-distant future, we’ve moved beyond our smartphones and laptops. We’ve got fully autonomous vehicles, created Oxygen Bars and park pods, and pretty much made the whole world artificial, but like super nice looking in an Apple product sorta way. We’ve automated everything, and amid this society madly in love with technology, tech giant Pegazus has created automation for birth. Their Womb Centers offer couples the opportunity to share their pregnancies via detachable artificial wombs or pods. So begins tech savvy Rachel (Clarke) and botanist Alvy’s (Ejiofor) wild ride to parenthood in this brave new world. Screener Squad Role Call! Melina, Jordan, and T.C. zip into their hermetically sealed Gizmonic Institute jumpsuits, take a hit of “natural” oxygen, and discuss the pros and cons of this movie’s concepts and execution, all under the watchful eye of the Operating System, which monitors their minds (la! la! la!).

Melina Eames (Screener Squad)

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). John Gholson is a writer and cartoonist with bylines at Movies.com, Moviefone, and Vice and illustration work for GQ and Fandango. As an actor, John can be seen in Zero Charisma, Hidden America With Jonah Ray, and The Suplex Duplex Complex. He writes and performs sketch comedy regularly at The New Movement Theater. John currently lives in Austin with his beloved comic book collection and a cat named after Peter Cushing.

KING ON SCREEN MOVIE REVIEW

When Stephen King released Carrie, his first novel, in 1974, the horror story initially received mixed reviews from critics. The novel’s unique blend of horror, psychological suspense, and coming-of-age themes garnered attention, but opinions were divided. Some critics praised King’s ability to capture the adolescent experience, create a sense of tension, and explore the darker aspects of human nature. Others, however, criticized the novel’s graphic and disturbing content, with some reviewers finding it excessive or sensationalized. And the most high profile of literary critics said this young writer had no future. But Carrie quickly gained a following and became a commercial success. Two years later, Brian De Palma brought the story to the big screen, and thus began the adaptations of King’s work. Now, nearly 50 years later, there have been more than 75 adaptations of his stories. King On Screen is a new documentary focusing on the works of the legendary author that have been adapted to film and television, from Carrie to IT to Pet Cemetery to The Dark Tower, The Green Mile, Misery, Stand By Me, Shawshank Redemption… The list goes on. But how does this documentary cover half a century of one man’s work? Frank, Ben, Lewayne, and T.C. are here to discuss their thoughts about this doc, and whether or not it succeeds in weaving a tale worthy of King himself.

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film.
