ONE PIECE SERIES REVIEW

King of the pirates Gold Roger (Michael Dorman) had fame and fortune beyond imagination. Before his execution he declared to all dreamers that his fortune was all there for the taking. You just have to find it first. A golden age of pirates has begun and sailors of all walks of life have set sail towards the grand line to claim Gold Roger’s fortune and become king of the pirates. Eiichiro Oda’s legendary ongoing manga OnePiece has been adapted into a Netflix live action series by Steven Maeda and Matt Owens. Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) , a carefree vagabond in a dingy, has made a promise to one day become king of the pirates. All he needs is a hardy crew and a map of the grand line. Roronoa Zoro (Mackenyu) has three swords and the ambition to be the greatest swordsman of all time. Nami (Emily Rudd) has a past, some secrets, and a love of cartography. Usopp (Jacob Romero Gibson) has tall tales of epic adventures but has never been on one of his own, but with his trusty slingshot his aim is as sharp as his tongue is silver. Lastly Sanji (Taz Skylar) is a chef with a nose for food and an eye for beautiful ladies. He wants to find an ancient legendary fish and cook the perfect meal. These strangers become friends, and then pirates, and face up against the swashbuckling wanted criminals of the sea. Amongst them are a circus themed pirate named Buggy (Jeff Ward), a fish man leading a revolution against land lubbers named Arlong (McKinney Belcher III) and they’ll also be chased by the law, specifically an old Navy Marine named Garp who knows Luffy more than most. Bradly, Dogget, and Matt break open the mead, eat some lemons, and discuss the success of anime adaptations, sing the praises of what the show accomplishes where other anime live action has failed, and together wonder what the OnePiece treasure could be.

BOTTOMS MOVIE REVIEW

From the writer and the director of the criminally underseen Shiva Baby comes this new high school raunchy comedy, Bottoms. PJ (Rachel Sennott) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri) are best friends, gay, and pretty much on the bottom rung of popularity at their school. And at their school, it is ALL about football. The big game is coming up against their long time rivals and all eyes are on the quarterback Jeff (Nicholas Galitzine) except for Josie who has eyes for his girlfriend Isabel (Havana Rose Liu) and PJ who is zeroing in on Isabel’s best friend Brittany (Kaia Gerber). But the two popular girls are way out of their league. So what are two unpopular lesbians to do? Make a female fight club. Ok, it makes sense when you watch the movie. Sort of. Bottoms is going for the surreal and black humor of something like Heathers and for Chris, Wright, and Beau, it comes close to being a cult classic but doesn’t quite go the distance. Tune for their reviews and weirdly timed allegories to the Great British Bake-Off.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). JUSTIFIED: CITY PRIMEVAL REVIEW

Thirteen years ago a neo-noir western crime thriller on F/X called Justified aired its series finale. Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) said goodbye to being justified in gunning down the no good scum of Kentucky. Now, streaming as a new mini-series on FX presented by Hulu, Justified: City Primeval has the US Marshall on a man hunt in the mean streets of Detroit. This new run is based on the novel City Primeval by Elmore Leonard. Raylan’s road trip to Florida with his daughter Willa (Vivian Olyphant) is cut short when duty calls. There’s a traffic collision, a murdered judge, a stubborn defence attorney, Armenian mobsters, and one itchy trigger fingered psychopath Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook). Everyone is after the dead judge’s little black book with a list of names tied to the corrupt rot enabling the city’s crime infestation. The bar owner Sweetie (Vondie Curtis-Hall) wants a chance at the fortune that passed him by. The defence attorney Carolyn (Aunjanue Ellis) wants to replace the corrupt judges with a black robe and gavel of her own, and Raylan wants to justifiably end Mansel’s killing spree before it puts his own family in Mansel’s crosshairs. Bradly, Matt, Dogget, and Jordan discuss their relationship with the Justified series and how they all feel about the revival series trend. They ponder the relationships between psychopaths and the badges that hunt them down, then pay respects to the many timeless voices of Keith David.

THE MONKEY KING MOVIE REVIEW

You may be familiar with the legend of the Monkey King from the ancient Chinese myth Journey to the West. The tale has been adapted into film, television, books, comics, and music hundreds of times. If you’re somehow not familiar, the story of the Monkey King is an epic adventure filled with supernatural feats, battles with Gods, mythical creatures, and profound lessons that have captivated audiences for centuries. The stories of the cheeky trickster are some of the most enduring and popular in Chinese culture. The newest adaptation comes from Netflix studios and producer Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle). In this iteration of the lore, we see Monkey’s (Jimmy O. Yang) origin and his quest for immortality, facing 100 demons, challenging the gods themselves, and developing a rivalry with the God of the weather, the Dragon King (Bowen Yang). He is accompanied in his journey by his loyal magical weapon, Stick and his assistant Lin (Jolie Hoang-Rappaport), who is a mere pebble in the universe, but also a young girl desperate to save her village. Mindy, Harmoni, Eliot, and T.C. sit down together to discuss this entry into the Journey to the West library, and one of the Squad who knows more about this legend than all of the others combined will tell you exactly how well this adapted the myth.

He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. Having grown up in Nairobi, Kenya, and being very disappointed at the lack of riding elephants her cartoons had promised her, Mindy spends the majority of her time as a film, theater, and voice over actress in the Austin, Texas area. They still give her money for being on HBO that one time, with her name in the credits spelled wrong. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting. In the few seconds she gets to herself, Mindy bakes for charity, knits eccentric plushies, plays original RPG’s with her gamemaster husband, and spends time with her soulmate, Batman.

Harmoni Anderson (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Unstabletop Gaming)

Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Plus she can curse at us and not get fired….so bonus!

Eliot Nelson (Screener Squad, Staff Writer)

Soaked in the soggy rains of Seattle, Eliot developed a love of sci-fi, movies, cartoons, heavy metal, and all of geekdom. Pursuing his passion for the written word, he got his BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He has since worked exclusively in the foodservice industry, like any liberal arts major worth their salt. Eliot wiles away the hours listening to movie reviews, writing his epic sci-fi novel, and consuming as much media as possible. His favorite movies include The Lord of the Rings, City of God, Dawn of the Dead, and Groundhog Day. WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS SEASON 5 REVIEW

What We Do In The Shadows, everybody’s favorite sitcom about vampires living together on Staten Island, is back for another season of mockumentary-style hijinks. Last season ended with Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), the long suffering familiar being turned into a vampire by someone who is NOT his master, a big taboo in the vampire world. If his master Nandor (Kayvan Novak) finds out, he’ll have no choice but to kill the unfaithful familiar, and then himself. It doesn’t help matters that Guillermo’s new vampire powers are decidedly half-baked. Meanwhile, Lazlo (Matt Berry) offers to help Guillermo by experimenting on his DNA, Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) runs for public office, Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) tries to break a hex that’s been placed on her, and new roommate The Guide (Kristen Schaal)… well, she just wants the other vampires in the house to like her. There’s a lot going on this season, and it feels like it’s building towards something big for at least one of the characters, but did it measure up to previous installments? Michael Riojas (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal small ville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. He lives in Austin with his beloved Dachshund-Maltese and trusted sidekick, Dean. He can also be heard on RageSelect. He can be found on Twitter and Instagram.

Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

Matt Frank (Giganticast, Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Matt Frank is known in both Japan and America as the “Kaiju King,” having been an artist for IDW’s Godzilla comics since 2011. His work can be found in Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters, Godzilla: History’s Greatest Monster, Godzilla: Legends, Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, and the critically praised Godzilla: Rage Across Time. Matt is also an accomplished Transformers artist, working extensively for both IDW and Fub Publications, as an interior artist and a character designer. Mars Attacks The Transformers and Spotlight: Trailcutter are among his most popular works, and he created four new Transformers characters, the Raptoricons, for the Official Collector’s Club in 2016. In the summer of 2017, Matt made an exclusive poster celebrating the American home video release of Shin Godzilla by Funimation, and is also a featured commentator on the blu-ray special features. He has also contributed covers for Go Go Power Rangers, My Little Pony, and Mars Attacks. GOLDA MOVIE REVIEW

Golda Meir was the Israeli prime minister from 1969 to 1974. During her service she made life or death decisions that would label her as a bloodthirsty tyrant to some and the Iron Lady Israel doing what’s best for her country by others. The film about her is directed by Guy Nattiv and written by Nicholas Martin and stars Helen Mirren as Golda Meir. It recounts her time as prime minister during the Yom Kippur War. The 1973 armed conflict was fought from October 6th to the 25th in 1973, between Israel and a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria. The majority of combat between the two sides took place in the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights, both of which were occupied by Israel in 1967, with some fighting in African Egypt and northern Israel. Egypt’s initial objective in the war was to seize a foothold on the eastern bank of the Suez Canal and subsequently leverage these gains to negotiate the return of the rest of the Israeli occupied Sinai Peninsula. In the film, Golda explains to a commission the decisions she made during the conflict and we as an audience bear witness to the horrors of war. Bradly, Frank, TC, and Eliot share their unique perspectives on the war and dissect the critic’s perspective when it comes to a biopic through the limited lens of its protagonist. Then some outrageous claims are made about the stunning Helen Mirren herself and her acting choices while portraying Golda Meir.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. T.C. De Witt (Screener Squad)

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. BAD THINGS MOVIE REVIEW

Bad Things is a “Shinning” example of what not to do if you like the movie The Shining. Imagine a movie where Jack Torrence doesn’t get a character setup, we don’t find out about his abusive past, and we just show up at The Overlook Hotel. It’s not that compelling of a story then. Bad Things strives to be what its predecessor was, it just falls flat. We have 4 friends staying at a defunct, probably haunted, hotel. Because of the lack of character development, when shit starts to go down, it doesn’t affect the viewer. There are a few moments of genuine horror, only to be surrounded by more convoluted plot details. The actors are great, but again, the source material doesn’t do any of them justice. But since Jordan, Lewayne, and Chad had to sit through this slog, maybe you should too?

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.
