KILL MOVIE REVIEW

While there’s always lots of great action movies at Fantastic Fest, it’s not very often that one comes along that instantly soars to the category of ‘all timer’. The Indian action film Kill is one of those movies. The film follows two army commandos, Amrit (Lakshya) and his friend Viresh, who have boarded a train because Amrit’s long-time love is on it with her wealthy family and he has to find a way to keep her arranged marriage to another man from happening. Unfortunately for everyone, this train is also carrying 40 members of a bandit family who want to rob everyone and hold the wealthy family hostage. Of course, this will not stand. Amrit and Viresh are insane badasses and with the help of the action choreographer from Snowpiercer (who knows a thing or two already about shooting action on a train) mass bloodshed ensues. Chris and Wright (along with pretty much everyone in the theater with them) lost their damn minds over this film which they put up there with The Raid. Check out their review.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. INFESTATION: FANTASTIC FEST 2023 – MARTIN THOMAS REVIEWS

We pulled in our old friend and Chris’s old co-worker from Spill dot com, Martin Thomas, to give his perspective on this year’s Fantastic Fest, his first in a decade. Martin, Chris, and Wright talk about the films The Origin, Strange Darling, Cobweb, River, Fishmonger, The Last Video Store, and Divinity. As you might expect, they have a grand ol’ time.

SAW X MOVIE REVIEW

Horror franchises are weird. Even if most of the films in a series are terrible, once you’ve made it to three, your IP pretty much never dies. Such is definitely the case with the Saw series. Now at the tenth film in the series, the timeline moves back to a story that takes place between Saw and Saw 2. And there’s a good reason for that. Since John “Jigsaw” Kramer (Tobin Bell) has been decidedly dead since Saw III, the only way to have him become the primary character on screen again is by moving back in the timeline. In this story, John has already killed some folks in his elaborate ‘games’ but little of that is discussed for the entirety of the first act of the film. He’s a sympathetic figure who just when he’s accepted that his brain cancer is going to kill him, finds a miraculous group of doctors who may just have the cure. Spoiler: this film doesn’t change the canon. Eventually, we get back to people dying horribly in his traps, characters from later films showing up who we didn’t know had been working with John until the reveals happened, and lots of moral judgements. Chris, Wright, and Nathan got their eyeballs sucked into this film and they give you the goods on what has become the most favorably reviewed film in the series.

A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. THEY CLONED TYRONE MOVIE REVIEW

I don’t know if you are aware of this, but the United States has a history of oppressing those who are not white/anglo-saxons. I know, crazy to read in print but it’s true. Trail of Tears, the Tulsa Massacre, the Tuskegee experiments, Japanese internment camps during WWII, the list goes on forever. They Cloned Tyrone rolls with that theme and adds a twist of comedy/sci-fi to tell an awesome Nancy Drew story. They Cloned Tyrone follows a drug dealer named Fontaine. One night, he’s murdered by a rival drug dealer, and the next day he wakes up in his bed, unaware of what happened the previous night. As events start to unfold, Fontaine, along with a pimp and a prostitute, find that there’s a secret government organization that’s cloning certain citizens of the Glen, making sure it’s always kept “in its place.” Which means black people are being controlled to keep the status quo. It’s a trippy ride with an excellent cast that includes John Boyega, Jamie Foxx, Teyonah Parris, David Alan Grier, and Kiefer Sutherland. While this film is a blast, T.C., Kim, and Chad wonder why this wasn’t given a wider release. It’s a shame because it’s a really fun movie.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. He has released two feature films, The Princess Knight and A Christmas Sunset. He thrives on collaboration and the thrill of sharing stories in all forms.

Kimberly Brown (Highly Suspect Reviews)

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

FUTURAMA SEASON 11 REVIEW

Great Manifestation of original IP sensations! Futurama is back after ten years and just in time to give Hulu a shot in the arm in the streaming wars. All your favorite Futurama pals are back with plenty of tales of interest! Time has skipped and Fry (Billy West) binges like no man has ever binged before to catch up on all my circuits before the finale. Leela (Katey Sagal) takes a job offer from DOOP after the cancellation of Zapp Brannigan (Billy West). Kif (Maurice LaMarche) and Amy (Lauren Tom) return to Amphibios 9 to collect their offspring and step into the joyous and treacherous roles of working parents. Professor Farnsworth (Billy West) tries to prove that the universe is not in fact one of his many simulated universes. Hermes (Phil LaMarr) continues to count, file, and limbo as the Planet Express resident bureaucrat. Zoidberg (Billy West) and Bender (John DiMaggio) go on a time traveling christmas adventure to save Xmas from a murder machine robot Santa. Bradly, Mike the Editor, and Dogget enter the time slip and discuss how the characters have aged since their last cancellation, debate the season’s best and worst episodes, and geek out over voice actor extraordinaire, Billy West, who might just be an android that can be heard for another 3000 years to come.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). SPOOKTACULAR! MOVIE REVIEW

This new documentary Spooktacular! is perfect for Fantastic Fest as it concerns the rise and fall of the first Horror Theme Park (which is a bit of a semantic stretch, but ok). Spooky World started as just a haunted hayride that was putting in considerably more effort than most, and ended up expanding to a horror museum, a wax museum, multiple haunts, scaryoke, and more with big horror celebrities like Alice Cooper, Kane Hodder, and Tom Savini getting involved. Of course, you know what they say about ‘all good things’ and eventually its time ran out but its legacy is far-reaching and on display across the world every October. Listen to Chris and Wright wax nostalgic for haunts, discuss Spooky World, and wonder at the huge presence of Tiny Tim in this doc.

THE ALTMAN METHOD MOVIE REVIEW

Noa and Uri are a married couple living in Israel and things are starting to get tough. It looks like Uri is going to have to shut down his martial arts school as the students have stopped signing up and Noa isn’t getting the acting parts she used to. When one day Uri fends off an attack from a Palestinian woman who does cleaning in their apartment building, the press makes him into a hero and his school suddenly is booming with new students. All appears to be going right for them but Noa can tell something is off about this attack. Chris and Wright didn’t feel the same about this one but both agree that Maayan Weinstock who plays Noa is a real find and that The Altman Method has some interesting things to say. Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). THE UNCLE MOVIE REVIEW

It’s the 1980s in Yugoslavia and for this father, mother, and teenage(?) boy, Christmas day is very important. It’s when their Uncle comes to visit and spend the holiday with them. A big turkey dinner, presents, dancing, and singing will follow. So why does it all seem to hollow and forced? And why, the very next day, does the family wake up and prepare to do Christmas day with their Uncle all over again? Thus is the premise of the Croatian film The Uncle that Chris and Wright saw at Fantastic Fest. And this isn’t some sort of supernatural event of days repeating; something is going on with the Uncle that forces the family to do this ad nauseam. What power could he possibly hold over them and why do this? We won’t answer those questions in our Infestation review but we will tell you how good this film is.

WHAT YOU WISH FOR MOVIE REVIEW

It’s rare a Fantastic Fest goes by that we don’t get some extreme film that has food at the center of it. This year that award goes to What You Wish For. Nick Stahl plays Ryan, a talented chef but one with such a bad gambling problem that he’s on the run from murderous collectors. Showing up for presumably just a ‘friendly visit’ to an old culinary school chum in Latin America, he finds himself in a position to take his friend’s place as a chef to some very rich folks soon to visit the beautiful house he stays at. But Ryan has no idea what he’s actually in for and if it’s even possible to get out of what would be an impossible situation for, I’d hope, most people. Chris and Wright fully declare What You Wish For one of the best of the fest and hope you all get a chance to see it for yourselves soon, but in the meantime, check out their review.

THE ORIGIN MOVIE REVIEW

Horror directors are always in search of a new twist on the genre and it’s gotten to the point that we’ve come down to animatronic characters coming to life and angry sorority sloths as the offerings this year. But Fantastic Fest presents a new way of delivering the thrills with a fascinating trip to 45,000 years ago with The Origin. A group of stone-age nomads out of desperation have come across the sea to a mysterious and barren new land, hoping to find some food and a home. Unfortunately, they appear to have only discovered something which is picking them off one by one in the dark. Both gorgeously shot and very scary, The Origin hit all the right notes for Chris and Wright. Listen to their review!
