WHEN EVIL LURKS MOVIE REVIEW

Two brothers Pedro and Jimmy live out in the countryside, scattered among a few other poor residents. But everyone is always somewhat on edge, waiting…for what? As it turns out, many years before there was a epidemic of demonic possessions in the cities (possibly tying this film into director Demian Rugna’s previous horror, Terrified) that pretty much wiped them out. Only the folks living on the outskirts at least somewhat believe in their safety. But when it turns out a local family is hiding a ‘rotten’, a member of their family that is possessed and so grotesquely overweight that they can’t really move anymore, they decide the best thing to do is to drive the thing 100s of miles away and dump it. Why not just kill it? This world has very specific demon rules and one of them seems to be that if you don’t kill these possessed folks in a very specific and arcane way that only a few are equipped to do, you just make the situation worse. Much worse. Before you know it, things get worse anyway and the two, and their extended families, find they may be facing the beginning of the end…of everything. Rugna makes Lucio Fulci-like horrors dripping with exquisitely designed gore sequences but with considerably better acting and scripts and is rapidly headed to the top of modern horror masters. Chris and Wright found When Evil Lurks to be the best horror film of Fantastic Fest 2023 and guess what…if you hurry up you might even be able to catch in a theater right now! Or very shortly on Shudder. Either way, do not miss this one if you are an aficionado of all things bloody.

RIDDLE OF FIRE MOVIE REVIEW

Three children are on a quest to solve the titular Riddle of Fire (actually just the password to their tv so they can play games on their pilfered hi-tech video game console). But one quest leads to the next, to the next, and really all they need is a specific kind of speckled egg to make a blueberry pie for their mother so she will unlock the tv. There will be terrible foes, like the gang family The Enchanted Blade who seem to have mind-control powers, and new allies like the youngest daughter of the crime family who just wants to make friends. Coded entirely as a fantasy adventure, Riddle of Fire is both delightful and hysterically cartoonish, with very young children who talk as if they were hard as nails. Chris and Wright adored this 16mm shot film and put it at the very top of their list for the best of Fantastic Fest 2023.

RESTORE POINT MOVIE REVIEW

In Prague in the year 2041, new tech allows people to upload their consciousness at regular intervals so in case they are killed, they can be resurrected with their memories up to that point intact. The catch is, if you don’t back up within 48 hours, you can’t legally be brought back. A young detective named Emma is after a terrorist group called “River of Life” who are killing people timed so they cannot be brought back to protest the ‘unnatural’ tech and wouldn’t you know it, powerful people are pulling coverups, things aren’t as they seem, and she has no idea who to trust. Chris and Wright thought this was a A+ sci-fi noir that needs to be seen by a LOT more people so they’re here to tell you about this Fantastic Fest treat.

THE CREATOR MOVIE REVIEW

From the director of Godzilla and Rogue One comes this new sci-fi film NOT based on a previous IP (at least not overtly), The Creator. In the future, the humanoid robots humanity have built have achieved total sentience, despite most of the world’s reluctance to accept their ‘humanity’. After a nuclear attack on LA by the robots, America is on the hunt and are closing in on the last resistance spots in New Asia, an area sympathetic to the robots. A former undercover operative, Joshua Taylor (John David Washington) after losing his wife (who was a human working with the robots) is talked into going back to enemy territory after he is shown evidence his wife might still be alive. The military wants him to find a secret weapon the robots are developing and destroy it, but when he discovers it is in the form of a robot child, and that maybe things aren’t as clear-cut as the Americans have advertised as to who is the aggressor here, he starts rethinking his allegiances. Chris and Wright dive into this Spielbergian tale, marvel how it was made for 80 million, and still kinda wish for more.

STRANGE PLANET SERIES REVIEW

In the archives of the ancient past of 2019, the ones and zeros driving the super information highway would often be implemented to spread joy on the daily. Images and captions would would work in unison to create what the inhabitants of Earth would call a webcomic. Nathan W. Pyle, the life giver of the comic known as Strange Planet has been given the honour by Apple TV Plus to adapt his creation with the assistance of Dan Harmon (Rick and Morty) and a vast assortment of voice actor comedians such as Tunde Adebimpe, Demi Adejuyigbe, Lor Tan Chinn, Danny Pudi, Hannah Einbinder, Shelby Young, and many others. The series follows an assortment of alien beings as they experience day to day life searching for ways to give that life meaning. Some ways might seem bizarre. From the irritations of flying machines, to the stress of tiny creature ownership, to raising offspring and respecting your own life givers. Bradly, TC, and Harmoni discuss the series’ quiet, hopeful, and hilarious first season and decide if the slice of life deserves a second season.

Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. T.C. De Witt (Screener Squad)

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. He’s provided content for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and several YouTube partners. His films have screened internationally, and his stageplays have been performed across the country. In the last ten years, he has directed 57 films, 23 episodes of his series The One Minute Rewatch, 300+ episodes of podcasts, and his multi-award-winning short film Screen: Righter screened at the Festival de Cannes in 2016. He has released two feature films, The Princess Knight and A Christmas Sunset. He thrives on collaboration and the thrill of sharing stories in all forms.

Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. THE EXORCIST: BELIEVER MOVIE REVIEW

David Gordon Green is back to reboot…remake…resequel another beloved horror franchise with The Exorcist: Believer. Leslie Odom Jr plays Victor in the follow up to the 1973 classic as he raises his daughter Angela, played by up-and-comer Lidya Jewett. One day after school Angela and her best friend Katherine, Olivia O’Neill, head into the woods to not be seen again for 3 days. When they’re discovered both families are relieved to have their daughters back, but something is off. Of course we’re talking about an Exorcist movie so naturally possessions and Pazuzus are involved. With the help of Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn) returning as her classic character, Victor and friends try to help their daughters find their way back to the light with some good ol’ fashioned exorcisms. Also Ann Dowd is in this so you know it’s going to be creepily good. Listen as Wright, Nathan, and Mike exorcise the demons and ponder if The Exorcist: Believer is a worthy follow up to the William Friedkin classic.

When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. FLORA AND SON MOVIE REVIEW

Once you have seen a John Carney film, the world changes and no matter what you’re going through you feel as if you can begin again. From On The Edge to Sing Street, John’s view of the world isn’t so much about what we see but how we listen to the music created from the lives of friends and family around us and how our own voices can contribute to the chaotic harmony of those beautifully enduring relationships. Flora and Son is brought to you by Apple Plus and is coming at ya hot off the red carpets of film festivals. The film is about a mother named Flora (Eve Hewson) who chances upon a discarded six string acoustic guitar and attempts to gift it to her son Max (Orén Kinlan). Max rejects the rather pathetic attempt at bonding and throws that Gitfiddle right back in her face. Flora ends up finding a zoom music teacher from LA named Jeff (Joseph Gordon Levitt), and discovering she has the itch to create something people can appreciate. In learning the chords and arranging works of art, Flora will also attempt to connect and arrange the harmony between mother and son that both parent and child so desperately need and deserve. Bradly, Melina, and Harmoni compose a ballad of critique and praise for Bono’s offspring, Eve Hewson, while also attempting to claim Joni Mitchell on behalf of their respective countries, then debate whether or not John Carney’s latest film live’s up to his beloved classics.

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Harmoni Anderson (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews, Unstabletop Gaming)

Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Plus she can curse at us and not get fired….so bonus!

KILL MOVIE REVIEW

While there’s always lots of great action movies at Fantastic Fest, it’s not very often that one comes along that instantly soars to the category of ‘all timer’. The Indian action film Kill is one of those movies. The film follows two army commandos, Amrit (Lakshya) and his friend Viresh, who have boarded a train because Amrit’s long-time love is on it with her wealthy family and he has to find a way to keep her arranged marriage to another man from happening. Unfortunately for everyone, this train is also carrying 40 members of a bandit family who want to rob everyone and hold the wealthy family hostage. Of course, this will not stand. Amrit and Viresh are insane badasses and with the help of the action choreographer from Snowpiercer (who knows a thing or two already about shooting action on a train) mass bloodshed ensues. Chris and Wright (along with pretty much everyone in the theater with them) lost their damn minds over this film which they put up there with The Raid. Check out their review.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. SAW X MOVIE REVIEW

Horror franchises are weird. Even if most of the films in a series are terrible, once you’ve made it to three, your IP pretty much never dies. Such is definitely the case with the Saw series. Now at the tenth film in the series, the timeline moves back to a story that takes place between Saw and Saw 2. And there’s a good reason for that. Since John “Jigsaw” Kramer (Tobin Bell) has been decidedly dead since Saw III, the only way to have him become the primary character on screen again is by moving back in the timeline. In this story, John has already killed some folks in his elaborate ‘games’ but little of that is discussed for the entirety of the first act of the film. He’s a sympathetic figure who just when he’s accepted that his brain cancer is going to kill him, finds a miraculous group of doctors who may just have the cure. Spoiler: this film doesn’t change the canon. Eventually, we get back to people dying horribly in his traps, characters from later films showing up who we didn’t know had been working with John until the reveals happened, and lots of moral judgements. Chris, Wright, and Nathan got their eyeballs sucked into this film and they give you the goods on what has become the most favorably reviewed film in the series.
