STAR TREK LOWER DECKS SEASON 4 REVIEW

Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the S.S. Cerritos. Exploring strange new worlds, making first contact with exciting new species and cultures. Boldly going where no one has gone before. Not the bridge crew mind you, the crew members who make sure the ship is functioning properly. Ensigns and rookie engineers make up the cast of Lower Decks. Season 4 opens up with ceremonies that have been a long time coming. Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells), and Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) are finally being promoted. Just in time too because out there in the vast reaches of space there is an unmarked ship that is indiscriminately destroying all ships it comes across. From Romulan Birds of Prey to Klingon Battle Cruisers, no ship is safe from this strange overpowered alien vessel. Arching mysteries aside, the crew has many episodic adventures including: Boimler leading his first away mission. Rutherford and Tendi in a sham relationship for the good of diplomacy. Beckett self reflecting upon her self destructive behavior, and a delightfully hilarious episode set in a cave all about adventures set in caves. Bradly, Harmony, and Jordan geek out over all easter eggs, references, and original characters this season, from marshmallow Moopsy to the Vulcan T’lyn (Gabrielle Ruiz) and Jordan gives us an educational monologue on trans representation through the power of the Undercut.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Armed with a vast knowledge of comics, films, and pop culture. Bradly traveled the world making friends and sharing takes. As a young man Bradly married the love of his life young and grew older every year with each new child brought into the brood. If trends continue, Scientists predict that .2% of Canada (where Bradly and family reside) will be populated by Bradly’s children by the year 2029. Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. PRISCILLA MOVIE REVIEW

You got your Elvis biopic recently with the Baz Luhrmann film. But that movie gave mere minutes of screentime to Elvis’s longtime companion and later wife, Priscilla. Now Sophia Coppola takes the helm on this A24 produced film, based on Priscilla Presley’s own biography. Priscilla (Cailee Spaeny) was but a school girl of 14 when she was scouted by a friend of Elvis’s to come to one of his house parties in Germany during his stint in the armed forces. And then, the grooming began. Although not married till many years later, and supposedly not terribly sexually active, although it depends on who you ask, she came to live with him in Graceland and become the proverbial bird in the gilded cage. Obviously there is a lot to be said about the inappropriateness of their relationship and all of it is implied in Coppola’s film, but the viewpoint is through young Priscilla’s eyes, as she eventually comes to realize that the fairy tale she became the princess in wasn’t so much a dream as a nightmare. Chris, Sarah Jane, and Nathan take a look at Priscilla.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. THE MARVELS MOVIE REVIEW

There’s a lot here to go through so keep up. Ahem. Captain Marvel is back from deep space where she tried to free the Kree from their AI intelligence but only made things much worse. Ms. Marvel is just chillin’ at home with her Captain Marvel fangirling and her family. Monica Rambeau (now all grown up and with light-based powers of her own but no superhero name) is working with Nick Fury on a space station investigating a weird jump-point anomaly near the moon. When Monica gets too close to the unstable jump point, something happens that causes the three women heroes to switch places physically (not like Freaky Friday) everytime one of them uses their powers. So, they have to team up together and learn to use this inconvenient effect to their benefit while trying to stop a vengeful Kree alien from ravaging a series of worlds for their natural resources to restore her home world. Got all that? Yeah, not us entirely either. Chris, Kim, and Nathan take on the latest MCU film and wish they liked it better.

Kimberly wants to live in a world filled with blue telephone boxes, speedsters, and ice dragons but through an ironic twist of fate, she’s stuck in this reality where these wondrous things only exist on page or film. Kim’s perpetual desire to consume sci-fi and fantasy media as a teen led her to the study of illustration/design at university to better understand its creation. Currently an Austin transplant, when she’s not wearing her critic hat you can find her pretending to like hiking, fielding questions about her hair or maybe even enjoying a local brew at the nearest dive bar.

Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH SEASON 2 REVIEW

Fun fact, this high seas adventure action comedy romance is in fact loosely based on the life of Stede Bonnet, the honest to goodness “Gentleman Pirate”. Set in 1717, the first season depicts the early days of Bonnet’s career (portrayed by the hilarious Rhys Darby) as a pirate after abandoning his family and his comfortable life as a member of the landed gentry of Barbados. Bonnet appears to have little or no aptitude for this role as the captain of the Revenge, with no experience beyond that of his privileged life. And yet, aboard his ship, the newly-minted Captain Bonnet and his dysfunctional crew survive against deadly threats both from naval warships and other dangerous pirates. During their misadventures, the crew of the Revenge cross paths with one of the most bloodthirsty pirates in history, Blackbeard, AKA Edward Teach (Taika Waititi). Ed and his crew, including First Mate Izzy Hands, join the Revenge and not only does comedy and chaos ensue, Ed and Bonnet fall in love. Season two picks up in the aftermath of the unfortunate breakup of the star-crossed captains. Blackbeard has returned to his legendary murderous ways while Stede rallies his crew and joins up with a cunning Pirate Queen (Ruibo Qian) to retake The Revenge and win back his lost love. Tessa, Harmoni, Chad, and T.C. set sail on the One Of Us sloop to sing the praises of this action-comedy-adventure-queer-romance.

Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. Wrote and contributed to website and magazine Strange Kids Club for five years reviewing films, video games, and Halloween candy. Co-hosted a Public Access show called Ladies of Fandom. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. BUTCHER’S CROSSING MOVIE REVIEW

Ah, the American frontier at the end of the 19th century. where men were men and rode horses into dusty sunsets over sweeping plains, ignoring their emotions and clearly suffering from deep traumas. America! Legends were made while history was written more often than not in blood and tears. And just as often, with lies and delusions. The myths and historical events and folklore of the American frontier have embedded themselves into United States culture so much so that the Old West, and the Western genre of media specifically, has become one of the defining periods of American national identity. Butcher’s Crossing, the novel written by John Williams, is considered by many to be among the first pioneers of a more “realistic” breed of western novel. The subject of the West had undergone a process of mindless stereotyping. Williams’ response to this stereotyping came in the form of Butcher’s Crossing, in which the harshness of life on the Western frontier is emphasized. The novel, and now the movie, features a mysterious frontiersman (Nic Cage) leading a group of men on a treacherous buffalo hunt. They soon find themselves in a fight for survival as the harsh elements start to test their resolve and sanity. Jordan, Chad, and T.C. gather around the One Of Us campfire to trade tales of survival. Well, surviving the viewing of this movie, at the very least. But does that mean they liked it or disliked it? That’s for you to discover.

Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. Chad is a frequent podcaster, most notably posing as a co-host for the podcast “The Film Illogical Society.”

THE MARSH KING’S DAUGHTER MOVIE REVIEW

Helena (Daisy Ridley) has an ordinary life. A loving husband, a beautiful daughter, a job that fills her days. Life is fine, until she realizes she was a fool to think she could ever leave her worst days behind her. Helena has a secret: she is the product of an abduction. Her mother was kidnapped as a teenager by her father, who came to be known as the Marsh King (Ben Mendelsohn). He kept them in a remote cabin in the marshlands of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. No electricity, no heat, no running water, not a single human beyond the three of them. T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He’s been a stage performer, playwright, stand-up comic, film and television actor, radio DJ, podcaster published author, recorded musician, and comic writer/illustrator. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

Mike J. McAllister (Screener Squad, Staff Writer, Head Video Editor)

Mike J. McAllister is a filmmaker, editor, writer and animator. He is also a film junkie, dog lover and Surge-aholic (Hi, Mike). He grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, where he earned the reputation as the “human IMDb” and was on a first-name basis with every video store clerk in town. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. He has also produced a number of short films, some of which have appeared in festivals across the country. He is a ninja with Final Cut Pro and is armed with a mind full of mostly useless pop-culture trivia. He also enjoys animation, MST3K, classic video games and being the “music geek” among his friends (which really just means he buys vinyl and listens to music that doesn’t come from an anime soundtrack). THE HOLDOVERS MOVIE REVIEW

Director Alexander Payne helms The Holdovers, set in the 70s at a snowy New England prep school during winter break. Paul (Paul Giamatti) is the teacher stuck with the job this season of watching over those poor students who don’t have a place to go over break and have to stay at the school. He’s not happy about it and neither are the students, as Paul is widely disliked and for good reason. He’s an intellectual snob who seems to take great pleasure in making others around him miserable with the one exception of the head chef at the school (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) who he feels a tenderness for since her son died in Vietnam recently. Eventually one rich kid’s parents give the rest of the kids the opportunity to go spend the the break on the slopes having fun, but one troubled youth, Angus (Dominic Sessa), can’t go. Slowly, a connection begins to form between the three ‘holdovers’ and some degree of healing ensues. Yes, it sounds like many other films you’ve seen before. However, Payne’s sensitive but funny handling of the material and the fantastic performances elevate it above most of the similar fare. Chris, Wright, Mike, and Nathan discuss The Holdovers here and how a film can be both excellent and not exactly anything new at the same time.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER REVIEW

Every Hallow’s eve the corporate ghouls and ghosts gather in the stream from hell to celebrate the return of Michael Flanagan to Netflix. Last year the master of horror gathered inspiration from one of the most diabolical existential hauntings that have plagued mankind’s existence, terminal illness. This year, Flanagan manifests the works of Edgar Allan Poe into our modern day with The Fall of the House of Usher. When the show begins, Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) and Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell) are the only surviving Ushers. Roderick’s children Frederick (Henry Thomas) Leo (Rahul Kohli) Tameraine (Samantha Sloyan) Morella (Crystal Balint) Perry (Sauriyan Sapkota) and Camille (Katie Siegel) have all had recently sudden and untimely ends that would at first glance appear to be freakish accidents and tragic suicides. The family fixer Arthur Pym (Mark Hamill) has linked a mysterious woman to each death to whom he has given the moniker Verna (Carla Gugino). Roderick in all his grief calls upon a man he once called friend, C. Auguste Dupin (Carl Lumbly) to reflect on his life and the decisions he and his sister Madeline made to survive as orphaned siblings and thrive as corporate billionaires. Mindy and Melina geek out over there shared knowledge of Poe and the many hidden and in your face easter eggs spread throughout the 8 episode tale, while Bradly praises the return of Flanagan’s favourite cast members. A nerdy geek, this award-winning actress joined One of Us figuring she’d put her summa cum laude BFA acting degree to good use…by judging other people’s acting.
