MAESTRO MOVIE REVIEW

Bradley Cooper is back behind and in front of the lens with his 2nd feature film with Maestro. Maestro tells the story of conductor/composer Leonard Bernstein’s rise as one of the most prominent conductors in the world while it chronicles his lifelong relationship with actress Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein. The film beautifully showcases how Cooper’s talent has grown since A Star is Born through his camera work, editing, and his use of Bernstein’s music to carry the film through wondrous moments and tragedy. Yet, the main draw is Carey Mulligan’s performance as Felicia. Mulligan and Cooper’s chemistry pulls the audience in as much as Bernstein’s commanding pieces. As Bernstein juggles his relationship between Felicia and his closeted affairs, the film portrays a complicated marriage between the two, but with grace and talent. Wright, Spider-Mike, Nathan, and Alan discuss how the film moved them and may be one of the best films of 2023.

A recent transplant to Austin originally hailing from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Midwest, Nathan Flynn has been a movie super freak since he saw “An American Werewolf in London” way too young and grew up worshipping the James Bond franchise and all things related to Cold War-era spycraft. When he’s not watching movies and being a constant defender of the Tron franchise, he can be found practicing his second biggest love: cooking (having been a chef for 10+ years) and hitting his head up against a desk to write screenplays that nobody reads. Michael Riojas (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal small ville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. LORD OF MISRULE MOVIE REVIEW

William Brent Bell (The Devil Inside and The Boy) has a new film out called Lord of Misrule. The plot follows Rebecca Holland, Henry Holland, and their daughter Grace. They’re transplants in a small town where everything seems to be going fine… That is until Grace is abducted during a local folk festival, and Rebecca seems to be the only one who cares. The townsfolk are sympathetic but something is off. Rebecca is relentless in trying to find the answers behind her daughter’s disappearance, but what she finds is way more than she expected. Unless you’re like Lewayne, Matt, and Chad… who could smell the ending before it was even served. Does it make it a bad movie? Tune in to find out.

Matt Foster is a stand up comic, podcaster, and movie critic currently living in the greater Salt Lake City area. His lifelong love of genre film began early, when he realized they freaked out his mom. He performs (epidemics permitting) regularly on Dungeons and Comedy, a DND live play with standup comedians, and is the slightly less mustache-y half of the Nighthawks Podcast, a cinema-centric discussion cohosted by Trevor T. Trujillo.

SILENT NIGHT MOVIE REVIEW

It’s hard to believe but it’s been 20 years since Hong Kong action maestro John Woo directed a Hollywood film. While Woo retains his taste for melodrama, his latest bullet ballet trades in his usual operatic flair for a grittier, more grounded approach to violence. Shot in Mexico City on a modest budget, Silent Night is a back-to-basics genre exercise but with a high concept twist: the movie has zero spoken dialogue. It’s a gimmick to be sure, but Woo seems to relish the challenge of telling a story primarily through visuals, performance, and action. One fateful Christmas Day, Brian (Joel Kinnaman) and his family are caught in the crossfire between two rival gangs. A stray bullet kills Brian’s nine year old son, while another bullet permanently destroys Brian’s larynx. Months go by and the police still haven’t made an arrest. Unable to speak, or to process his grief and rage, Brian decides to take the law into his own hands. On the first anniversary of his son’s death, Brian will avenge his son by single-handedly taking down the drug cartel responsible. It’s a good thing he gave himself until Christmas because it’s going to take some time for Brian to acquire the skills and gear he needs to become a one-man army. He later studied film in Pittsburgh. He has since written several unproduced screenplays and TV pilots. GODZILLA MINUS ONE MOVIE REVIEW

Godzilla has been known to overshadow his co-stars (figuratively and literally) but Godzilla Minus One deliberately centers its story around its human characters. During the final months of WW2, a kamikaze pilot named Koichi (Ryunosuke Kamiki), abandons his suicide mission by flying back to base for bogus repairs. No sooner is his cowardice exposed, when Godzilla shows up, destroying the base and killing everyone except Koichi and one other witness. Wracked with shame and survivor’s guilt, Koichi returns to bombed-out Tokyo to discover his home in ruins and his parents dead. Things change for the disgraced pilot when he forms a found family with Noriko (Minami Hamabe), a homeless young woman, and Akiko, an orphaned baby that Noriko pulled out of the rubble. Koichi soon finds work on a minesweeping vessel only to encounter an even bigger, more powerful Godzilla. Once too scared to die for his country, Koichi must now find the courage to die for the people he loves. Surprising audiences and critics alike, Godzilla Minus One has garnered rave reviews and broken North American box office records. Those accomplishments are more impressive when you consider that writer/director/VFX supervisor Takashi Yamazaki delivered a blockbuster for a fraction of what a Hollywood tentpole costs. Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

MAY DECEMBER MOVIE REVIEW

Director Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven, Velvet Goldmine) has finally taken the plunge into streaming services, with the silver screen replaced by the black mirror as Netflix presents May December. Elizabeth (Natalie Portman) is a famous procedural actor on a long running CSI-like show who’s just been cast in a scandalous true crime story similar to our own reality’s Mary K Letourneau. Gracie (Julianne Moore) as a young wife with kids of her own, preyed upon and had sexual relations with Joe Yoo, a junior high school kid. Gracie goes to prison, of course, and has Joe’s baby behind bars. Upon her release they started a family and over twenty years later Jo and Gracie are living with their now three children. Enter Elizabeth, who will be shadowing Gracie and asking questions of her friends, family, and enemies in order to prepare for the role of a lifetime. Bradly reminisces on the case the film was actually based on while Sarah Jane contemplates the staying power of this and other Todd Haynes films. Nate also joins the team to implore all of you to see this film on the biggest screen possible instead of using the small and convenient cell phone on the bus.

LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY SERIES REVIEW

In the 1950’s there was a post-war boom full of North Korean war vets, denim jeans, form fitting skirts, and the upcoming civil rights movements that would echo into our current age. Elizabeth Zot (Brie Larson) is a single mother and celebrity chef on a famous television show “Supper at Six”. Every evening she entertains by presenting cooking as a science, while mothers and kids across the nation benefit, including her young daughter Medline Zot (Alice Halsey) and their dog Six Thirty (B.J. Novak). Elizabeth dreamed of conquering the human genome which would lead to the discovery of the origins of humanity, in her more youthful days as a scientist at Hastings with co-hort Calvin Evans (Lewis Pullman). How did a young scientist on the edge of a major breakthrough become a single mother and TV chef? In short, life happens. This is an Apple Plus series based on the debut novel Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. Bradly, Jordan, and Harmony cook up a tasty review full of sweet and salty takes. They discuss the highs and lows of the 50’s, the chemistry between the characters, Oscar winner Brie Larson as the lead, and the Civil rights sub-plot led by Aja Naomi King that perhaps should have been a series all it’s own.

Jordan Cobb (Screener Squad)

Born with a comic book in one hand, a camera in the other, and in front of the television as WrestleMania played out, Jordan Worth Cobb was thus birthed into this crazy world. A Digital Filmmaking major from the University of Central Arkansas, Jordan has done it all in film from directing, writing, editing, and producing in addition to skills involved in film and TV criticism, journalism, and years of podcasting experience. On any given day, her ADHD riddled brain bounces focus from film to pro wrestling to TV to superheroes to noir to video games to espionage and yes, even to sports. She played little league you know. Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 331: …FEATURING PAZUZU

Chris and Wright tremble in fear beneath their huge stack of films to review this week, which makes sense since we’ve got a lot of horror and thrillers in the mix. From a 2009 remake of a questionable horror classic, to a new 4k of the central reference point film for most folk horror. Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others). Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. He currently co-hosts with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright also guests and hosts reviews on Screener Squad and Highly Suspect Reviews as well as co-hosts Digital Noise with Chris Cox.

POOR THINGS MOVIE REVIEW

Greek writer/director Yorgos Lanthimos brings with him a certain level of prestige, as among his many awards he has Best Director/Picture for the 2018 The Favourite. But he also brings something else…some seriously weird stories. His latest, Poor Things, returns more to the form of his earlier work in that sense, but in a completely new way. Willem Dafoe is Dr. Godwin Baxter, a sort of mash-up between Dr Frankenstein and Dr Moreau. Horribly scarred, and a creator of horrific chimeric monsters, he nonetheless is respected by his colleagues and loved by his ‘daughter’, Bella Baxter (Emma Stone). But she’s not really his daughter and not really a regular human either. With the mind of a small child in the body of an adult woman, she stumbles through the world precociously but learning at a mad pace. When a cad of a lawyer (Mark Ruffalo) is taken with her and invites her to travel the world with him, and pretty much hump like rabbits everywhere they go, she goes off on an adventure. But this lawyer has no idea what he’s in for as Bella is a sponge and a lot of the conclusions she comes to aren’t really ‘society normal’. Chris, Mike MC, Marco, and Frank watch this psychedelic, horror, philosophical, sex comedy and at least one of them declares it the best film of the year. Check out their review.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

THE BOY AND THE HERON MOVIE REVIEW

In what seems likely to be master animator and storyteller Hayao Miyazaki’s final film (the man is 82), The Boy and the Heron returns to dark and surreal fantasy and I suspect long-time fans will be beside themselves happy about it. The story follows Mahito, a 12 year old boy whose mother is killed in a hospital fire during the Pacific War. A bit later, his father marries his wife’s younger sister Natsuko and he and Mahito relocate to her family estate in the countryside. Mahito isn’t thrilled, to say the least. He constantly misses his mom and his new stepmom is having a difficult first pregnancy. When one day, she disappears into the mysterious woods surrounding the estate, Mahito suspects it has something to do with a talking grey heron that has been bothering him and a strange, dilapidated tower building in the woods. Thus, he sets off to other realms entirely with an unreliable sorta-heron as his guide, to try and rescue his new mom. Chris, Ben, Spidermike, and MikeMc take on this newest entry in Studio Ghibli’s impressive list of films.

Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal small ville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. SCOTT PILGRIM TAKES OFF SERIES REVIEW

What’s up subspace travelers? If you don’t know who Scott Pilgrim is, stop reading this, pick up the comics and watch Edgar Wright’s movie… Are you finished? Did you get all the plot points? Great, now forget everything you just learned because Scott Pilgrim Takes Off has nothing to do with what you just ingested. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off takes a spin in the first act. Normally the story goes that Matthew Patel challenges Scott to a fight at a Sex-Bob-Bomb show, loses, and we never hear anything from Matthew again and Scott is set up to fight all of Ramona’s evil ex’s. This time however, Matthew beats Scott, apparently killing him. Which sends the whole universe into new territory. Ramona isn’t satisfied with that though, and instead goes on a journey to find Scott, knowing he’s still alive… somewhere. This series is easily bingeable and has the entire movie cast back for the voices. It may not have the same punch/kick the source material has, but it’s a unique spin on an already established world. Scott’s World is now Ramona’s. Join Eliot, Mike, and Chad as they talk about all the evil ex boyfriends they fought to a bloody death-match.
